lighted to welcome Virginia-based roots duet The Honey Dew-drops on Nov. 21. Laura Wortmanand Kagey Parrish blend newAmericana and traditional folk

music, creating inspired songsrooted in the experience of realpeople. Not to be pegged as justanother singer-songwriter cou-ple, they embed a sparse Ap-palachian clarity in every song achieving a sound that is tran-scendent.

With music that covers theground spanning hand-craftedfolk songs, Appalachian fiddletunes and a cappella spirituals, every song shines with energyand emotion through intimate

performances. With a handful ofacoustic instruments and tightlylayered harmonies, the duo fillsup a room with sound and feeling

that linger long after the show isover.

Township manager Scott Carew gavepreliminary numbers for the cost and timeframe of treatment options for the 1,2,3Trichloropropane (TCP) at the townshipcouncil meeting on Monday, Nov. 10. It is es-timated that the cost could be between $2million and $4 million, and it could be 12 to18 months to get the treatments set up.

All of these numbers are elementary

until we decide what direction we aregoing in, Carew said.

At the meeting, Mayor Chris Chiacchiosuggested the township put out a Requestfor Proposal for a consultant. Councilmembers Greg Newcomer, Phil Garwood

and Victoria Napolitano agreed this wouldbe a good option. Deputy Mayor Stacey Jor-dan was not at the meeting.

I think it would be good to look for aconsultant who is schooled in these typesof matters, with the educational back-ground and experience, who can come tomeetings and answer these questions. Imnot an expert in these things, so lets get anexpert in to look at it and discuss it andgive us a plan, Chiacchio said.

The consultant would be asked to evalu-

ate treatment options for eliminating thepresence of TCP from the townships watersupply. The township would go out to bidfor a contractor to eliminate the contami-nant after the consultants evaluation iscomplete.

Chiacchio also expressed his concernwith the time frame, saying he would liketo see something in place by April or May.

This decision was made as questionsfrom residents continued to come in aboutTCP and the towns water supply. SinceMoorestown closed two wells for furtherevaluations and concern over the TCPbeing found in the water since 2013, thepeople of Moorestown want answers.

The township has said the amount ofTCP in the water is not enough to cause

health problems unless a person drinks anexcessive amount of water over a long peri-od of time. However, the council chose toclose the wells as a precaution.

Cost to treat chemical compound in water supplyestimated between $2 million and $4 million

Township manager also says it could be 12 to 18 months to set up treatments

    please see NEXT, page 24

Sorry to say this so early, while 60-

degree days were here just a few

days ago, but, alas, the holiday

    season has arrived.

The good news is that means many

    good-hearted people and organizations

will be gathering food, clothing, toys,

money and other items for those lessfortunate.

At The Sun, we want to help make

your event or drive as successful as

possible. But to do that, we need your

    help.

Many retailers count on Black Fri-

day to help put their business in the

black for the year. If holiday sales are

strong, they have a good overall year. If

sales are soft, they struggle to get by.

The same theory can hold true for

nonprofits and other groups that de-

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through

the rest of the year. People, naturally,

are more giving during this time of the

year. So, in the coming weeks, youll

see bell-ringers, donation drives and a

lot of other efforts to help those in

    need.

We salute everyone who holds a

drive to help those in need. But we also

want to help make those efforts as

    grand and successful as possible.

To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know

what types of items you are trying to

collect, who will benefit from the drive,

and, most importantly, how people can

    get involved to help you.

Email is the best way to send us this

information, and youll find our newsemail address to the right.

Then, after we get your information,

well take it from there. Well get it into

the paper and let everyone in town

know what it is you are trying to ac-

complish and how they can be a part of

    it.

    Many families are still struggling

with the economy. There always are

people in need. Let us help you to help

them. Send us your event information

and lets make this a big donation year.

    in our opinion

Holiday helpersIts the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive

    The need is there

The need for donations this holiday periodis strong. Tell us about your fundraisingeffort or donation drive, and well telleveryone else.

The township applied for com-pensation through the statesSpill Compensation Fund, whichprovides financial assistance fortreatment and cleanup efforts, onJune 11. However, NJDEP deniedthe application because the initialsample was collected in May oflast year. Carew said they didntknow it was too late at the time.

A municipality has 12 monthsto apply for compensation fromthe time of initial discovery. The

township didnt apply for thefunding immediately becausethere was no immediate concernover an unregulated contaminantin the water.

Council is looking into variousways of funding with the NJDEP,though Chiacchio said he wastold the township could reapplyfor the funding at the start of nextyear.

Also, if the township finds thesource of the TCP in the watersupply, and there is someone re-sponsible, it could potentially get

compensation from them, accord-ing to Township Solicitor Antho-ny Drollas.

Information on the water qual-ity report and timeline, TCP andmore can be found on the town-ships websitewww.moorestown.nj.us.

In other news: Due to the recent burglaries

around Moorestown, Carew sug-gested a town hall meeting be setup to provide guidance to citizensof the town. Council agreed this

was a good idea. The township has been look-

ing into improvements for itswebsite as well as the planning, zoning and construction depart-ments website. For the planning, zoning and construction depart-ments, the internal staff has beenlooking at potential vendors fornew software to enable residents, businesses and contractors to

apply for permits online. The de-partments are hoping that withthe new software, the informa-tion will move the inspections

more quickly and the paperworkwill flow more easily. Also, oncein the system, residents, busi-nesses and contractors should beable to track their permits onlineand keep updated with the paper-work. As for the township web-site, a unanimous decision wasreached on a vendor by theTelecommunications and Tech-nology Committee.

Weve heard for a long time ofpeople having a hard time withour website, that its difficult to

Laurie Palko really has put alot of work into this event. It isimportant to recognize all ofthose groups and people who do-nated their services, said BradKenney, executive director of theCommunity House.

The event will culminate withthe lighting of a 20-foot Norwayspruce generously donated lastyear by Pete Palko in honor of hismother. The tree will once againbe decorated with beautiful lightsdonated by Moorestown Hard-ware, with the labor to hang thelights being donated by HyperionTree Service.

The tree lighting, which will bebroadcast live around 6:15 p.m. onChannel 3, will be followed by adrive-by visit from Santa on a firetruck. To learn more about theCommunity House, visitwww.ourcommunityhouse.com.

The next exciting holiday eventis the Cooks Tour on Dec. 3 from10 a.m. to 8 p.m., returning toMoorestown after a years hiatus.According to Rose McManusColeman, senior vice president ofthe Virtua Foundation, after 50years, the Virtua Memorial Auxil-iaries, which organize the CooksTour, needed to take a step back

and reevaluate how the tour wasrun and put together. With thehelp of many volunteers, the touris back.

We are thrilled that membersof the community stepped for-ward to take on the responsibili-ty, Coleman said. Were gratefulfor them doing this. It requires alot of work and does a lot ofgood.

This marks the 51st year of theCooks Tour and will feature four

    beautiful homes decorated for the

holiday season. This communityfundraiser will support renova-tions to the Oncology InfusionCenter at Virtua Memorial in Mt.Holly.

The Cooks Tour was started in1962 by the Curtis Auxiliary, anall-volunteer organization found-ed by a group of Moorestownwomen. It was named in honor ofDr. Howard M. Curtis, a pediatri-cian at what is now known as Vir-tua Memorial.

    Other than the gingerbread

cookies, seeing how differentfolks decorate their homes andhow people celebrate is one of myfavorite parts, Coleman said. Itis great to see people come out tohelp and experience thesehomes.

Tickets are available online atcookstour.ticketleap.com, at theCommunity House and at partici-pating Moorestown businesses.Tickets are limited so be sure toget them early. Interested volun-teers can contact Virtua Founda-tion at (856) 355-0830.

The Moorestown Lions Clubs54th Annual Holiday Parade onSaturday, Dec. 6 is the next eventin Moorestown that celebratesthe holiday season. On a goodweather day, the parade can getbetween 3,500 and 5,000 specta-tors. However, rain or shine, theevent shall go on.

Many of the people who cometo watch the parade were in itthemselves as children. It is a con-

tinuation thing to be able to seewhat their own children aredoing and what they did. The re-marks I get about the parade arevery positive. People really enjoyit. It is one of the few events thatbrings people together with noagenda other than to have a goodtime, said Peter R. Thorndike, parade chairman.

The parade, which begins atnoon at the corner of Chester andCentral avenues, will be led by the

    The Scot McGregor Bagpipes

Band and include performancesby string bands, the MoorestownHigh School Band and the LibertyBand. In addition, there will bethe town council, Boys Scoutsand Girls Scouts, marching unitsand floats in the parade. Thetheme of this year's parade isFrozen. Cash prizes will beawarded to the participants bestexemplifying the theme.

The parade begins at Centraland Chester avenues and travelsnorth to Main Street. It then trav-

els south on Main Street until itreaches Church Street and the re-viewing stand where it will pro-ceed south to Memorial Field.

Its a little bit of Americanathat still exists out there today,Thorndike said.

The Moorestown Mall will alsobe hosting a slew of holidayevents. There will be a HolidayDigital Contest to win $1,000 start-ing Nov. 21 through Dec. 12; acharity toy drive sponsored byMoorestown Mall and LourdesHealth System starting Friday,Nov. 21 through Dec. 24; the Salva-tion Army Red Kettle Drivestarting Nov. 28 through Dec. 24;and Military Shopping Day onDec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Letsnot forget Santa will be availablefor pictures and fun events, whichwill continue until Dec. 24.
