users difficult, especially in the current year, with very slow economic growth in 2014 in Italy (graph 3) resulting in a slowdown in imports from South Africa in 2015.

From the graphs it can be seen that the consistent weakening of the Yuan against the Euro (graph 4), and the measures introduced by the Chinese government to weaken the Yuan against the Dollar (graph 5), certainly assisted Chinese exporters of finished goods.

of volatility will arise from time to time, but I would like to encourage producers to look at the holistic picture and a longer term view.

The marketing initiatives of the industry have to be kept up and expanded and focus areas must be adjusted to ensure that the kid segment return to its rightful place in the market, with sustainable price levels to ensure both profitable production and sustainable usage of the fibre, keeping in mind that Mohair SA has only had its own dedicated marketing department for the past eight years.

The consumer of today has endless options, ranging from synthetics imitating the properties of natural fibres to a choice of speciality natural fibres. The onus is on us as an Industry to ensure the consumer is made aware of the fibre and its properties and is produced within an environment which is sustainable and will result in the consumer making mohair their fibre of choice.

products containing some percentage of mohair being consumed in the Chinese domestic market, with an increasing number of brands using smaller percentage of mohair in the luxury market.(not only in China)

Although the Chinese domestic market has huge potential, the European and American market is still the main destination for mohair products manufactured in China.Looking at the long term trends (graph 6) of real prices, in other words taking into

account the effect of producer price inflation, 2014 could be regarded as the best year ever, with prices in an upward trend from around 1994.

What must be kept in mind is that mohair is a niche speciality fibre and volumes produced globally are small in relation to other fibres like wool (0.2% of global wool production).

The slowdown in the Chinese Economy has created some degree of uncertainty in users’ minds, which resulted in orders being taken up later than usual. There is however no doubt that the market is in an overall healthy state.

DIE HUIDIGE STAND VAN DIE SA BOKHAARMARK is daar rede tot kommer?

Om enige produk se mark te verstaan moet ’n mens in die eerste plek gaan kyk na wie die verbruikers van hierdie mark is. Sybokhaar is in ’n baie unieke posisie in die sin dat dit ’n nis produk, binne-in ’n nis mark is. Die verbruiker vereenselwig sybokhaar as ‘n ‘elite’ produk en heg eerder waarde aan die feit dat die produk ‘n sybokhaarinhoud bevat en sal dus in die produk belê ongeag die persentasie sybokhaar inhoud van die produk. Verbruikers met ‘n buitengewone hoë inkomste verkies dit om produkte met ‘n hoër komposisie sybokhaar aan te skaf. Die vraag is dus uiteindelik hoe gesond hierdie mark nog is.

Die waarheid is dat ryk mense oor die algemeen ryk bly. Hulle beskerm hulle self baie beter teen die sikliese op-en-af tendense van die wêreld se ekonomie. Hierdie klas ryk mense is ook besig om teen ’n redelike konstante tempo toe te neem, veral in China.

China is ’n groot bekommernis van enige produsent van kommoditeite, aangesien die Chinese ekonomie besig is om deur ’n afkoel fase te gaan. Die vraag is egter of die Chinese ekonomie ’n beduiende uitwerking gaan hê op ons veselmarkte. Na my mening nie. Die e i n d v e r b r u i k e r van ons produk sit in Amerika en Europa. Daar is wel ’n groeiende Chinese mark, maar dit is nog ’n baie jong en onervare mark.

As ons gaan kyk na wat tans met SA bokhaar gebeur, is dit duidelik dat ons baie goed behandel word. Ongelukkig is daar vir verskeie redes baie

groot geraas gemaak van enkele bale wat baie hoë kleinbokkiehaar pryse deur enkele produsente behaal het. Uit die aard van die saak is dit lekker vir enige iemand om so goed betaal te word, maar die waarheid is dat dit slegs ‘n paar produsente is en dus nie ’n ware weerspieëling van die fundamentele mark aandui nie.

Hou ingedagte dat ongeveer 65% van ’n skeersel uit grootbokhaar bestaan, dit is dus baie maklik om totaal die verkeerde afleiding te maak deur na kleinbokkiehaar te kyk en te dink dat die mark besig is om te verswak.

Uit die grootbokhaar grafiek op bladsy 4 kan gesien word dat grootbok-haar nog steeds ’n stygende tendens toon, of dan op die minste nie terug gesak het nie. Kleinbokkiehaar het wel terug gesak, maar ook gemiddeld nie tot die mate wat produsente so bekommerd maak nie. Wat wel gebeur het, is dat daardie geweldige hoë uitspringer nie weer hierdie seisoen voorgekom het nie, maar die gemiddeld van die hele skeersel het slegs met 17% afgekom, wel as waar ’n groot verlaging maar definitief nie ’n ineenstorting nie.

Een van die interessante veranderende markneigings is dat die gaping tussen winter-en -somerskeersel al hoe kleiner

raak. Soos gesien kan word in die grafiek hieronder. Dit kan toegeskryf word na my mening in die genetiese verandering van die kudde wat al hoe fyner geraak het in die afgelope dekade. Of hierdie neiging ’n goeie of ’n slegte ding is sal die tyd nog moet leer.

Ten slotte:Die werk wat tans gedoen word om bokhaar te bemark in die res van die wêreld is na my mening besig om vrugte af te werp. Markte het ’n geneigdheid om op en af te gaan. Op die heel minste sal ek wil glo dat ons huidig in ’n stabiliseringsfase is na ‘n

beduidende opfase. Die mark is definitief nie besig om ineen te stort nie.

Die bal is in ons almal as rol spelers se hande om dit wat ons het te bewaar en uit te brei.

Two years before the implementation of South Africa’s democratically elected government in 1994, it was clear that the end of the old Agricultural Control Boards was in sight. There was fear that hard earned producer funds would be under threat and so proposals were put forward to find alternative vehicles and structures to protect these funds and service the industry.

Industry bodies that existed pre-democracy were the Mohair Board, the Mohair Growers Association and the Journal Committee. The members who served on the latter two bodies, served largely on a pro deo basis. Production stood at 6.7 million kilograms, produced by an estimated 3 thousand producers. Delays and legal wrangles ensued and by the time the proposed new structures of the Mohair Trust and Mohair South Africa (MSA) came into being in 1998, production was down to 5 million kilograms and we had lost some 500 producers.

In 1998 the funds became the

responsibility of the Mohair Trust, while the marketing, pools and administrative functions were MSA’s responsibility. The Mohair Growers Association and Journal Committee continued to function as before. All told there were 38 non-executive positions in our structures. We employed (8) permanent people to do the work, supporting an industry that produced 5 million kilograms of mohair.

By 2011 production had dropped to an all-time low of 2.23 million kilograms, produced by a dwindling number of fewer than 1000 producers. Great focus was placed on production promotion from the Mohair Grower’s side and MSA took some very bold and successful innovative marketing initiatives.

But our industry structures had remained unchanged. We had increased our permanent employees to 11 and still had 38 non-executives telling them what to do. Travelling costs had escalated and honorariums and day fees and meeting fees were the order of the day.

The pressure on the finite Trust

Fund resources was ever increasing. We were an industry in crisis and needed to do something drastic. The trustees volunteered to give up their honorariums and travelling fees were brought into line with averaged AA rates. The other industry bodies were asked to follow the example of the trustees. This brought about an immediate saving of some R600,000.00. This “saving” was allocated to the first of the producer focussed special projects.

A positive change had happened and thoughts became focussed on other measures which could be explored to bring about similar positive changes. The industry was top heavy, yet it needed a broad based representation. Too many executive functions were being performed by non-executive persons with vague reporting lines and clouded responsibility. The fiduciary responsibility lay primarily with the trustees; not just the preservation of the capital, but also in the effective application of the funds that were made available.

Some of the issues affecting the industry that needed to be addressed were:• A duplication of employee registers and submission of statutory returns• No common HR policy • No standardised remuneration structure • No long term strategic vision for the industry• No overall body to prioritise the spend of Industry monies• The need to preserve the tax exempt status of MSA.

For the first time the leaders of the various bodies started having regular meetings and discovered that they had very similar objectives. Many meetings followed. Many alternatives were discussed. Legal opinions were sought.

Today we believe we have taken the first important steps in making our industry structures more cost effective and relevant to present day conditions.

Day to day operational functions are now the responsibility of full time employees with measurable performance criteria who are able to express themselves more creatively in the execution of their duties. There are now 13 full-time employees. The number of non-executive positions will decrease to 25. Their role will be largely strategic and advisory. There will be no additional burden to our expenses.

In addition, our industry structures have started to reflect racial representation. We have black commercial farmers serving in the very top structures of our industry.

Is this the perfect model? We know it is not. The challenge facing our leaders of tomorrow will be to continually test and

measure the efficacy of our operations and strive to stay abreast of our rapidly changing world trading environment.

* The re-structuring has not affected the Ram breeders Society, SAMGA & the Empowerment Trust will continue to function as usual.

The 14th annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, took place on June 26, until June 28. It is one of the Eastern Cape’s most celebrated outdoor festivals. The Mohair tent was definately one of the big attractions with the largest offering of Mohair products under one roof in South Africa. Abafazi, Adele’s Mohair, African Expressions, Camdeboo Leisure, Elsa Barnard Mohair Carpets, Hinterveld, Jan-Paul Barnard, the Mohair Mill Shop & newcomer, Tulip Designs all formed part of the Mohair one-stop-shop. Young and old came to visit the popular Mohair marquee sporting a fun kiddie area where the littlees can keep busy while their parents shopped to their hearts’ delight. A few local celebrities as well as the some of the Mohair Industry family came to get their hands on some Mohair Products.

MOHAIR MOVESThe Mohair Marketing team had barely touched sides in the past three months since the 72nd Annual South African Mohair Growers’ Congress in June this year. From New York to China and

keeping it local too, this sneak preview highlights where Mohair South Africa has taken the Mohair Mark, enticing and exciting consumers, designers, decision makers and more in the world of the fibre industry...Mohair is making big moves! Keep an eye out more details about the marketing endeavours in the 2015/2016 Mohair Journal.

Spin Expo New York took place from Fri July 17 to Sat July 25, 2015 . Anlé Marais & Lindsay Humphreys from Mohair South Africa visited the United States of America to showcase the versatility of Mohair. “There is so much excitement for the Mohair Industry,” says Anlé. This expo presented us a platform to introduce Mohair to some of the most influencial decision makers in the world of fashion. The spin-off of these trade shows are invaluable to the fibre industry. Its all about educating and inspiring, and keeping it fresh.”

Mohair SA sponsored Mohair products as prizes to a variety of sporting events in the past few months including the Angora Mountain Bike Classic in Jansenville on the 5th of September 2015, the Sunshine Coast Trail Run which took place on the 6th of September 2015 and the Urban Run in Port Elizabeth on the 26 & 27th of September 2015.

The 26th session of SPINEXPO Shanghai, the leading trade fair for yarns and fibres, took place from 1-3 September 2015 in Shanghai, China.Anlé Marais and Honors Textile Design Bursary student, Siobhan Momberg represented MSA at the trade fair in partnership with Sam Liu from Hanscent.

The 2015 Port Elizabeth Algoa FM HOMEMAKERS Expo was held at The Boardwalk Exhibition Centre, Summerstrand on the 26 & 27 July 2015. The interactive Mohair wall which was on display at the expo won a silver award for the most innovative display. The objective behind this clever design was to feature the various uses Mohair as home furnishing and decor.

OctoberSAMGA & MSA joined forces and invited local Mohair designers & manufacturers to offer Mohair products at the Karoo-Lus Festival in Graaff-Reinet on 2-3 October 2015.Hinterveld, Tulip Designs, The Mohair Millshop, Adéle’s Mohair & Elsa Barnard Carpets exhibited at the festival.

PETER CAWOOD CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

It is that time of the year again. Time for the Angora Ram Breeders to bring their best genes to the sales. This year is however a big year for Peter Cawood from Cawoodholme Angoras, stud 187 as Pete will be celebrating his 50th year as an Angora Stud Breeder. This astute Angora farmer has been a registered Angora breeder since 1965 and

During 2014 the mohair market was distinguished by a number of world-record prices and dramatic price increases. To put this in perspective: the natural mohair fibre enjoys global popularity as a fashion textile. With South Africa and its ‘Cape Mohair’ acknowledged as the world leader in mohair

production on all levels, this led to the doubling-up of its market-price within two years! It was to be expected then that a price resistance by processors was in the offing – especially for the finer, quality part of the clip. During 2015 this has brought about a correction in the average price.

However, on this week’s auction in Port Elizabeth there was an about turn! For the first time in months the market realised an increase of some 3% - 4%. The demand for mohair has never waned. The market was just poised for these lower price levels to encourage doing business again.

The seasonal record price of R340.00/kg was paid for a 24micron, B-length bale of winter kid mohair – usually in short supply during winter. The seller was Theronnie van der Merwe of Murraysburg. The hair was scientifically identified in the CMW laboratory by way of the EGT (every goat tested) process. The two clips which were in close contest for the highest clip average were likewise EGT-classed. The clip of Van Hasselt Farming of Prince Albert - which was allocated the position of best clip worldwide in 2014 by the Japanese Miyuki Keori Company, achieved the second place at R230.93/kg,.

Met ’n onlangse deelname aan ’n suiwel kudde kompetisie in die Tsitsikamma, het ek verstom gestaan oor die produksie en kwaliteit teel-materiaal wat met tyd hier ontwikkel het.

Van skaars 10-15 liter produksie per dag tot produksies vanaf 22 tot 40 liter en meer. Alhoewel weidings bestuur krities is, het hierdie melkboere oor die laaste twintig jaar die meeste gemaak uit hulle genetika! Hulle melk as dit ware hulle genetika. Nie slegs produksie was hulle fokus nie maar ook langs lewendheid en eienskappe wat dit kan bevorder.

Om die maksimum van genetika te maak moet dit ontgin word. As die haar follikel van ’n Angora reeds tydens fetus stadium ontwikkel(dws dit beinvloed die dier se toekomstige lewens produksie) waarom wag produsente dat bokke aborteer of bokkies vrek voordat hulle aandag gee aan die voeding?

Hoekom doen soveel telers moeite om geneties meerderwaar-dige bokke te teel, veldram klubs te stig en te ondersteun, as die kwaliteit diere wat aangekoop word, se potensiaal nie ontgin word nie?

Dit alles weet ek moet binne ’n balans van ekonomie en prestasie gebeur. Gee konserwatiewe tree en begin by die produserende diere. Hierdie diere gee altyd u geld terug. Energie en verbyvloei proteine is nou hoog in aanvraag. Moenie wag vir reën nie, selfs al val broodnodige water bly die bogenoemde voedingstowwe in aanvrag by die ooi en lam.

Conical Fluke (Paramphistomum ) although rare, has been reported in Angora goats and can occur on irrigated pastures where water is sourced from dams and rivers and where goats drink and graze around open water sources. The flukes appear light red, pear-shaped, 5 to 13mm long and 2 to 5mm wide. The flukes are often found incidentally on post mortem in the rumen with immature forms in the small intestine.Dr Snyman (Grootfontein) confirmed cases in 2-4 tooth Angoras that had been on veld and then irrigated pastures where the water was from the Fish River and Orange River schemes

Clinical signs:Immature flukes attached to the wall of the small intestine cause inflammation. Digestion and absorption are impaired causing diarrhoea. Appetite is depressed and goats lose weight and become weak. Bleeding may occur which over time may cause anaemia. This may result in ‘swelsiekte’ and goats may die.

Post Mortem findings:Immature flukes found in abomasum and proximal duodenum. These are just visible and look like the size of sugar granules. Sub-cutaneous fluid accumulates , especially ventral neck, head, body and legs as well as between muscles.Fluid is found in the abomen and thorax and lungs.

Life cycle of the conical fluke:The adults can live for years in the goat.Eggs pass in faeces and the miracidium hatches in 12 to 17 days and swims free in water before penetrating a snail. Cercariae which develop and mature in the snails, are shed, and encyst as metacercariae on vegetation. Total development in snails requires about 34 days. The metacercariae may live on pasture for about three months. Goats are infected by ingesting cysts on grass. Digestion releases metacercariae in the intestine where they attach and mature for 6 to 8 weeks before migrating forward to the rumen.

DiagnosisEggs in faeces indicate presence of adult rumen flukes.Post mortem

Treatment and Control: Avoid open water sources. Snails live on wet pasture, which can be drained or fenced off. Adult goats develop good acquired immunity. Fence off infected ‘vleie’ dams or canals .Copper sulphate in water.

Die proef wat die SASKV gedurende April/Mei 2015 met bioworx NEMAPRO* (Probiotika) op Angorabokke op aangeplante weiding gedoen het, het die volgende bewys:

’n Probiotika is ’n mikro-organisme (bakterie) wat die gasheer (bok) se gesond-heid positief beïnvloed. Die huid van ’n rondewurm het ’n dun, buigbare buitenste bedekking wat hoofsaaklik bestaan uit proteine. Die ensieme (protease) wat vervaardig word deur die probiotika in bioworx NEMAPRO veroorsaak skade aan die huid met afskilfering van die buitenste lae wat kan aanleiding gee tot die afsterwe van die rondewurm. Sien figuur hieronder:

Dit beteken dat slegs die rondewurmlarwe wat die dier die afgelope 2 tot 3 dae besmet het in die dier se spysverteringstelsel teenwoordig behoort te wees.

MOHAIR EMPOWERMENT TRUST CEMENTS IT’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL MARKETING COUNCIL

The successful launch of the new strategy of the Mohair Empowerment Trust to develop emerging farmers into large scale commercial Mohair producers, has created a great deal of interest in the agricultural developmental sector.The National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) visited the Brakfontein & Weltevrede Farms in Somerset East on 28th September 2015 to get insights into these projects. The most prominent feedback from the visitors was that the enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of the partners of these two projects was a very positive indication that these endeavors are on the road to success.*Full details of the visit will be published in the 2015/16 Mohair Journal.
