Some stalwarts of the angora and mohair industry from the past who put in so much effort into either bringing in genetics, showing or the administration side of things here in WA all came together with present day breeders to chat about the past and present, and to partake of a most enjoyable BBQ lunch. The angora & mohair industry body, which is now known as Mohair Australia Ltd, saw its beginnings here in WA in the 1960’s. The number of angoras being run here at present has dwindled, from the high interest period of the 1980s’ to 2000. There is still a keen band of breeders who run them throughout the state. It has been remarkable to see the difference in the confirmation of the angora goat and the mohair they carry from those past years to the present day. We have certainly come along way with the animals we run today and much of that success has to go to past breeders, their initiatives in bringing in the new genetics from Texas and South Africa and the breeding and selection done by all since. NSW Division of Mohair Australia Ltd

Australian Angora Buck Field Trial and Sale

The general concept of a Buck Performance Trial and Sale was adopted by the NSW Division at its meeting on the 19th April, 2008. The trial will be run at the ALAMO CUDAL Stud at CUDAL NSW from 1st August to the 1st February 2009. The NSW Division will invite all Mohair Australia stud breeders to complete an "Expression of Interest" application to take part in this Trial. Depending on the number of replies, studs will be invited to enter teams of 3, 12 month old bucks which will be delivered to Cudal on the 1-3rd August, bare shorn (or to be shorn on arrival). Animals will be vaccinated with 6 in 1 and JD, weighed, tagged, drenched and inspected for footrot. The animals will be placed on grazing oats and be offered oat grain for a limited period to limit transport shock and facilitate settling in. Animals will be run together on "pasture" for 6 months and weighed monthly to ensure continued weight gain. The object of the exercise is to demonstrate paddock performance of the bucks and to sell the animals at the end of the trial. The trial is not a competition but will be a demonstration of performance and a sale of animals produced under uniform conditions and without elaborate preparation. On the 31st January animals will be penned for inspection. In the afternoon they will be shorn and the fleeces weighed, tested using a Fleecscan/Laserscan machine (note; mid side samples will be taken 2 weeks before this to provide continuity of tests), classed and valued using test results. Weight indexes for each trait (body wt, fleece weight, staple length, fibre diameter, CV and value, as well as a South African Fineness Indexes), will be calculated. A catalogue prepared from pedigree and performance information for an auction sale on the 1st February. Animals and fleeces will be displayed for the sale. Here is a program which can do the calculations. indexer (see web site) While breeders will have the opportunity to remove one (1) inferior animal from the sale (if this occurs), all data will be published. Breeders will have the right to purchase their own animals should they feel that a particular animal warrants keeping. The NSW Division will charge a fee of 5% on all sales but sales will be treated as between vendor and purchaser as with the NATS 2008 sale. The fleeces will become the property of Cudal Mohair Stud by way of recovery of cost of running the Trial and will be sold through National Mohair Pool. National Mohair Pool will cover the cost of Fleecescan and so will be a co-sponsor of this Trial with Alamo Cudal. Unsold animals will be sold to an abattoir and breeders will be paid an average price per head less a 5% fee from the NSW Division. Breeders would be able to retain their unsold animals if removed on the Sale day. The NSW Division will appoint a management committee headed by Doug Stapleton and Steve Roots (NSW Division Secretary) from the participating stud breeders, and this committee will have control of all decisions relating to the management and sale of animals. The NSW Division is enthusiastic about this trial and urges all breeders to consider an entry. It should be noted that the trial is limited to 20 teams of 3 animals. On-going information on this trial will appear on the www.alamocudal.com.au web site and my offer to provide an opening bid of $2000 for one of the top SA Fineness Index animals, stands. Doug Stapleton Trial and Sale Coordinator, NSW Division.

 Report on the 08‐1 Pool

National’s first 2008 pool comprised 29,538kg offered at auction on May 16 and 1400kg of contract‐grown long wig mohair.  This pool was characterised by larger clips of stronger mohair due possibly to the dry but generally favourable grow‐ing conditions, and growers are to be commended for some excellent quality consignments. National’s policy of testing grower lots allowed the identification of a considerable amount of mohair with fibre diameters above what the visual appearance suggested. This resulted in remarkably superior Young Goat (YG)and Fine Fine Hair (FFH) lines as well as a larger than usual offering of strong adult mohair.     Despite the high quality offering, the auction sale saw a lack of support by all buyers and, on adult and outsort lines, a reticence to come to the prices reached at the previous week’s Australian sale. Once again, NMP was forced to pass in a number of  lots during the course of the auction, and negotiate with buyers at its conclusion. Although we were ultimately successful in achieving a 100% clearance, prices generally demonstrated the effect of a small num‐ber of buyers with limited orders.   Fine Kid mohair reached a high of $29.50/kg and prices for fibre under 32 microns were acceptable in historical terms. Adult fibre failed to reach levels of the previous 12 months.  The one‐off, long mohair order (for adult fibre over  16cm in length) was supplied at a contract price of $15/kg, a considerable premium over the normal adult fibre price. This order was a small but significant specialised form of production which has been shown to be possible and rewarding.   Quotations. $A/kg greasy ‐ Average = $8.40/kg greasy AFKID and BFKID 29.50. AKID 20.00, BKID 19.00, CKID 18.50. ASKID 12.00, BSKID 11.00, AYG 9.20, SBYG 9.20, BYG 9.20 & 9.10, CYG 8.00. SOGFH 15.00, AFFH and BFFH 6.00, AFFHK and BFFHK 4.90, AFH 5.60, BFH 5.20, CFFH 5.50 ABH 4.70, FHKK 4.25, COT 5.60, LSTN 3.05, HSTN 3.00, FHV 3.05 and KIDV 17.10.  The next sale will be held on the 14th November with pools closing in early October. Growers are urged to deliver their fibre as soon as possible to help reduce the work load of pool staff in the last weeks before the sale.

LAND TRANSPORT STANDARDS PUBLIC CONSULTATION REMINDER

The deadline for public comments on the draft Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for the Land Transport of Livestock (the Standards) is 27 May 2008.Dr Kevin de Witte, coordinator of the Standards, said that he is aware that many stakeholders are in the process of preparing their submissions and are on track to meet the deadline.

“We are seeking comments from anyone who may be affected by the Standards, as well as interested members of the public. In particular, we want to know how well people believe:

• the Standards specify requirements for protecting the welfare of livestock while being transported on land • the associated Regulatory Impact Statement demonstrates the need for the Standards and the costs and benefits.”

“Interested parties can either write their own submissions or complete a survey that targets different sections of the Standards and RIS.” he said “Submissions take time though. The Standards and RIS are lengthy documents and they take time to read and absorb in preparation for providing feedback.” “Anyone wishing to comment on the Standards still has time and we encourage them to do so.” said Dr de Witte.

Full details about the draft Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for the Land Transport of Livestock (the Standards), including the RIS and the online survey, are available at: www.animalwelfarestandards.net.au. Animal Health Australia has been leading the project to develop the draft Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for the Land Transport of Livestock on behalf of the Primary Industries Standing Committee. The project has been funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to address a key objective of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd A2008 Sale held 9th May 2008

A2008 Market Comment A total offering for the season of 65,091Kgs (includes auction and private sales). As a result of improved seasonal conditions and breeding influence, mohair on average was stronger across the board than previous seasons. This is a fact that has been observed industry wide. The stronger average micron and high Australian Dollar impacted on prices, especially above 31/32 micron. In spite of the stronger microns, finer kid types attracted very active competition. The top priced lot in the sale was a grower lot offered on behalf of Nugong Pastoral Company of Victoria (D & M Nicholls). Lot 55 (AFKID) achieved 3200c/kg. This was a very attractive, high yielding Lot of mohair exhibiting very good style and low VM content. Pooled fine kid lines made from 2000 to 2900 c/kg. Good kid types ranged from 1415 to 1985 c/kg. In the good YG lines, BYG averages 1029 c/kg whilst the AYG remains unsold. If this line can find a buyer at a reasonable price, it will be sold in the near future. Fine Fine Hair types ranged from 615 to 665 c/kg whilst good fine hair made from 630 to 635 c/kg. The season average for all types for A2008 was 903 c/kg. Craig Clancy, Technical Officer

International Year of Natural Fibres (2009) Noting that the diverse range of natural fibres produced in many countries provides an important source of income for farmers, and can thus play an

important role in improving food security, eradicating poverty, and contributing to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the Assembly, 20 December 2006, decided to proclaim 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibres (resolution 61/189). It invited the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to facilitate the observance of the Year, in collaboration with Governments, regional, international and non-governmental organizations, the private sector and relevant United Nations bodies. The Assembly encouraged all Governments, the United Nations system and all other actors to take advantage of the Year to increase awareness of the importance of these natural products. It called upon Governments and relevant regional and international organizations, and invited non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to make voluntary contributions and lend other forms of support to the Year.

East Central Region Victoria Meeting held 4th May 2008. Members were treated to a DVD from Meat and Livestock Australia n Bar-bers Pole worm and a new test under development, then they watched a video from June Liddy on their stud enterprise at Horsham and a third video of the clip from ABC’s Landline program which was filmed on Margaret Nicholl’s farm at Swifts Creek. The enjoyed an informative speaker in Nicole Care from Ridley Agriproducts makers of “Barastock” who spoke on Goat Nutrition, including vitamins, minerals, supplementary feeding and common problems. The meeting was hosted by Kate Ryan and students from Elisabeth Murdoch College and all were thanked for their help in the organisation of the day. This region is planning a bus trip to the Canberra region, visiting top studs and popular tourist spots on the June long weekend—cost if approx $500 per person and interested participants should contact Wilma Smart on 03 5942 7735 ASAP.

2009 AUSTRALASIAN SHOW AND SALE ON THE MOVE The 2009 Australasian Show and Sale is moving to the Horsham Showgrounds. The Maydale Pavilion at the showgrounds will be an excellent facility to host the event. This facility will provide a much bigger shed which has a concrete floor. No more contending with dust blowing with the hot summer wind. An added advantage will be fully equipped shearing facility. There are three shearing stands, raised shearing boards and pens behind the stands. We will be able to cater for an increased appraisal class, making shearing and fleece handling much easier. Fleece display will be much improved by the availability of specific fleece display stands. The increased size of the shed will allow more room for trade displays. We now have the capability of catering for all those who wish to display their goods in a dust free spacious environment. Now is the time to start thinking about the trip to Horsham for the 2009 Australasian. There will be all the room you need for that special show team.

CAPE MOHAIR SALES STH AFRICA

Fifth Summer Sale of 2008 -13th May 2008 Today’s mohair sale will be remembered for the huge price variation in specifically the young goat-group of mohair, based on fineness. the stronger young goats lost all the positive momentum what was build on the previous sale. The adult- and kid mohair market was fairly stable if you take in consideration that the Rand/$ exchange rate worked against the sale with more than 3%. The price of kid mohair increased 2.4% and a sale clearance of 98%; young goat hair decreased with 2.1% and a sale clearance of 84% and adult mohair decreased with 3.9% and a sale clearance of 100%. Not even spinal damage could keep producer Kimberley Barrett from Narriah Pastoral Co in Weethalle, away from the AMMO Ltd mohair auction on 9th May. Kimberley injured her back just over a week prior to the sale in a fall at home and despite an operation to insert a pin in her neck, she wanted to come along and observe the auction.—That’s dedication! Right : Kimberley inspects bales shown traditionally for the sale.
