South Australia – by Lynne Carter At a recent meeting of the South Australian Division of Mohair Australia Ltd committee which was held at Lynne & Don Carter’s home, our group enjoyed a hot roast lunch followed by a tour of the animals of the Lynndon Grove Stud during a pleasant sunny afternoon . The group browsed the young 9-10 month old buck kids on the farm, catching sight of many of the outstanding young potential sires for next year’s Stud Show and Sale . Greg Petersen & Judy Eustice inspect many of the young boys’ fleeces and commented on the softness and the growth rates of the young sires. Final selection has not as yet taken place but will by October 2006 . We as a group do spend some time in discussing the influence of genetics on the industry and the industry as a whole, but as

Australian Mohair Marketing Organisation Ltd Sale Report B2006 Auction Sale held 16 June 2006 at Narrandera NSW 48,556kgs Sold 100% clearance Sale average $13.10/kg.

The B2006 sale saw AMMO offer 48,556 kgs by auction & private treaty, achieving a 100% to-tal clearance. The sale was characterised by low dem,and which forced prices back some-what on our previous March sale. Adult prices remain firm however at prices above $10/kg and the overall sale average of $13.10/kg was down only $1.97 on our previous sale Demand at the finer end of the market was down and buyers were blaming the fall and then rise of the Australian dollar, low demand internationally, the end of the financial year and the European summer season and holidays. It was however, pleasing to see a 100% clearance once again in a depressed market.

The Cassillis event held to launch the MLA’s “Going Into Goats – Profitable producers’ best practice guide”, also heralded the start of an ongoing support program for potential and existing goat producers. MLA has established partnerships with state-based organisations and service providers to run field days and forums throughout Australia following the launch. The future for goat production is exciting! The Western Australian launch is scheduled to be held on 16th August at Jeff and Juliana Neve’s property, “Koorana” at Walkaway near Geraldton. Jeff and Juliana run 1000 plus angoras as well as raise milk fed lambs and 400 rangeland boer cross does, to supply the domestic capretto market. The day, commencing at 10am, will feature speakers on such topics as ‘MLA and goats‘, ‘The importance of product integrity‘, local goat production success stories and animal husbandry principles, as well as an insight into the export market for Australia Goat Meat. It is important for angora and mohair producers to realise that they are part of a larger industry whose focus on goats as a species, is reflected in the advice contained in the Best Practice Manual. Much of the information provided is generic and therefore applies to all goat breeds to enable this manual to be suitable for use by all types of goat producers. The Going into Goats Manual has been developed with the assistance of leading goat producers across Australia. These people have willingly shared their knowledge in an effort to help other producers grow their businesses. It has been created with the intent of supplying information for all existing and potential goat producers irrespective of productive capacity or geographic location. The two distinct systems referred to in the document are ‘extensive’ and ‘intensive’ management systems. Case studies are a feature of the manual. Topics covered in the manual include - Property Planning – Why run goats, and what you will need to establish how to start an enterprise. Financial Analysis – Although not Angora specific this section provides scenarios to help new producers incorporate goats into their existing enterprises and gives advice on what outlays may be needed and what returns may be expected. It is anticipated that by producing the manual in a loose leaf format, more up to date information may be able to be added to this and other sections as it comes to hand. Industry Obligations – Relevant laws, regulations and obligations to ensure animal welfare, health and quality assurance as well as biosecurity. Infrastructure – How to best contain and handle goats with minimal fuss and outlay Goat Selection – Looks at potential goat business scenarios and how you might best consider the specifics of your chosen markets. Husbandry – Explains the principles for effective goat breeding and weaning. Nutrition – Information on nutritional requirements for all stock classes and how to go about delivering those needs effectively in good and bad times for maximum performance. Marketing – A guide to potential markets for your goats and how to access them and more valuable advice. Copies of the manual are available from Meat and Livestock Australia or by calling 1800 675 717. The manual is priced at $60.00 for MLA members and $120.00 for non-members. To become a member of Meat and Livestock Australia visit the website or also phone the above number.

Hands-on training meets industry demand Australian Agricultural College Corporation (AACC) has unveiled its new direction for 2007 with a course restructure aimed at producing multi-skilled graduates for stronger rural communities. AACC director Malcolm McKay said the new course structure represents a step forward in the provi-sion of flexible and relevant agricultural training. “We have forged strong links with industry groups

and rural communities,” he said. “This relationship will help us produce graduates who are more job-ready than ever before.” Under the course restructure, students start their studies with a Certificate II in Rural Operations. Graduates of the Certificate II courses can then go straight to work with useable skills or go onto further training. Mr McKay said the new course structure was developed in response to a growing demand for more multi-skilled graduates with the basic knowledge to operate a farm as well as perform specific tasks. “We’re really listening to what students, and rural employers and industries need,” he said. “When you’re working in the agricul-tural and rural industry, you face a wide range of challenges that test you everyday. You can’t just run to the nearest servo when the tractor or ute stops, and you can’t just call a tradesman when the gate doesn’t close. You need a wide range of basic farm skills to effec-tively handle these situations.” Mr McKay said the outcome of the course restructure will be greater resources being allocated to areas of specialisation and a higher level of quality training. National leads the way again – core testing grower lines

National Mohair Pool pioneered the use of measurement technology in classing and marketing Australian mohair. Processors, buyers and both Australian brokers now accept the efficacy of measurement, and its use is universal. Now it’s time for another innovation! Growers’ quality lines over 30kg will be core tested and classed on test. The micron and CV for each line will be reported back to the grower. The benefits:

• The creation of more uniform lines on specification, favoured by processors. • Growers will be able to check their visual classing against test results. • Growers will be able to assess the results of their breeding program after every

shearing, and modify their directions if required.

WATCH FOR ANIMAL POISONING Two articles by Mick Doak Independent Livestock Services W.A. Over the many years we have been involved in the livestock industries we have continually received phone calls querying the sudden death, or symptoms in animals which eventually lead to death. Although it is difficult and foolish to give a diagnosis over the phone (and may I add I only have experience and no diplomas to do so) you try to help where ever you can in this situation which is stressful for both animals and their owners. The normal approach taken is to go through a ‘hit list’ of questions starting with “What are they eating and drink-ing?” or “Has their feed or grazing been changed in any way?” As what an animal eats is a major reason for most deaths which occur, especially in goats. A sudden change in feed can cause Pulpy Kidney, or grain or plant poi-soning. Many of the imported weeds and some of our native shrubs are toxic to our farmed domesticated animals when ingested. Drinking water can become contaminated by certain algae, dead carcasses or chemicals which find their way into water sources. The common crow for example, has a habit of dropping its food and other interesting items into troughs. This can include parts of dead animals and birds, baits and poison containers. Cleaning out troughs on a regular basis is a must and you may come up with some interesting items in the process. As you continue to go through your list of suspect killers you can look at worms and ask have the animals been drenched, especially after rains in warm conditions, as Barbers Pole worms are a major problem and can have dramatic effect on seemingly healthy animals in a short period of time. If the animals are nearing the end of their gestation period and have had a sudden change in feed or been shorn or transported, then Pregnancy Toxemia may be the reason for their sudden painful death. There have been reports of the odd animal dying in a paddock and the blame has been leveled to the animal treading onto a snake and been bitten. When a number of previously healthy animals show similar signs at the same time and the more common rea-sons have been eliminated as above then poisoning can be suspected. The sudden onset of illness soon after feeding, medication, spraying (by neighbours, contractors or yourself) or after a change to a new pasture points to poison as the illness. To determine the cause of poisoning look at what happened just before the outbreak. Search the area for clues. Did it only happen to one mob? Did you use any procedures which differed to your nor-mal practice? If you are unable to come up with an answer you may wish to contact your local veterinarian who may suggest a post mortem or another form of analysis which could be helpful to solve and stop future problems. Unfortunately the hard facts of life are that if you are an animal owner, you will lose some along the way but you should continue to aim to lose as few as possible be taking all possible precautions and being aware of the cause and effects as outlined above.

DROUGHT FEEDING BREEDERS Hopefully by the time this article goes to press we may have had some good news when it comes to rain. Most of the agricultural areas in WA and other parts of the country are experiencing one of the worst years on record when it comes to opening rains. The lack of rain and the cold weather being experienced is a major challenge to breeders of all agricultural animals especially as there now also seems to be a lack of supplementary feed and hay in many areas. Most grazing has deteriorated to an extent that animals are starting to lose condition and this is not a good thing, especially for pregnant females that are trying to not only keep themselves going but also to keep the unborn baby inside them growing as well. The best way is to start feeding animals before they lose too much condition, as once they are too light in condi-tion it is hard to build them up again, but you don’t want to waste precious feed, so feeding a little is better than nothing. A trail of lupins or other grains two or three times a week will keep them going. Goats in particular do best with some roughage which can be in the form of hay, straw or scrub. To assess the body condition of goats and sheep place your hand on the part of the backbone just behind the last large ribs. If the backbone is sharp to touch then the animal is in poor condition and needs feeding, while if the backbone is harder to feel and you can feel some soft tissue between the short ribs, then the animal is in better condition. There is a pamphlet available from the Agricultural Department of WA with excellent diagrams which will be of a benefit if you have not done this before on your Goats and Sheep. If your animals are in poor condition and we do get some wet and cold weather, then you may have a potential disaster on your hands. Cold wet weather and windy conditions are not the best environment for poor conditioned animals and new born lambs and kids. If you have a patch of bush they will seek shelter and losses could be re-duced. It is recommended that you place your animals in their different size and age groups, trying to keep the young and unmated does in different mobs to the pregnant females. Likewise some growers drift the females that have not had their babies away from the ones that have had theirs. This can be a tricky exercise as once animals are used to supplementary feeding they will come from miles when they see or hear a vehicle, and may leave their new born baby behind. We are at present witnessing what normally happens when things start to get dry and serious, growers unload their unwanted animals and unfortunately as most areas are in the same predicament the prices have started to fluctuate as supply increases and demand dwindles.
