Application fro R.L. Ogden for permi sion to erect a perpendicular sign on the footpath, in front of No. 11/13 Erskineville Rd., Newtown. It was Resolved on the recommendation of the Works' Committee, that the application be "Received~, and refused, as · the sign in question woul.d be an encro~chment on the footpath.

Application fro J. ~eating for permission to retain a sign erected without Ceuncil's permission, in front of his Dancing Salon, Newtown Bridge, and also to retain a sign erected on premises, Bo. 633/5 Kipg st., near th~ st. Peters' Rail~ Bridge. It was Resolved on the recommendatio~ of the WorkS' Committee, that the letter be "Received", tentative permission be granted to retain the sign in front of the Dancing Salon, Newtown Bridge, and the applicant be notified to raise the Cross- sign over the footpath to the regulation height, also permissi n be granted to retain the sign &n the st. The Secretary of the Local Government Assn., of N.s.w., forwarded a summary of the business transacted at the recent Conference held at Armidale. It was Resolved that the Summar.y be "Received", and laid upon the table. ·

Letter from the Erskineville Council, aSking co-operation in an effort to have the Erskineville Park vested entirely .in the Erskineville Council, for its management and control. Alderman Dunshea moved that the letter be "Received", and co-operation, as desired, be granted, as the dual control of Parka in considered unsatisfactory, and that a letter expressi~ this Council's views,be forwarded to the Honorable E.A. Buttenshaw, K.L.A., :W.nister for Lands. Secondea, by .tuderman Fleming, and carried.

Letter from the M. Water s. & D. Board, furnishing information regarding the renewal of water mains within.this area, and the restora tion of roads and paths. In connec~ion wl~h this matt9~ a letter was receiv• d from the Lane Cove Council, asking co-operation in a request to th& Government ~ o mit the oo~ditionJ "That the restoration of roads and paths is to be carl'iea out by the Board as Relief Work", from any future Grants to the Board. It was Resolved on the recommendation of the Works' Committee, that tqe letter from the Water Board be "Received", and a coy,y of.thia Council's Engineers' Report on the whole matter be forwarded to the President of the M.Water s. & D. Boardt also to this Council's Representatives on the Board, (Aldermen Galloway & Harris}, with a request that the restoration of roads and paths within this area, be carried out by local men, under the control and supervision of this Council's Engineer; The materials, together with experienced Leading Handa ~o be supplied by this Council, so as to ensure the proper construction and supervision of the work of each gang, and a fair charge tor such control, supervision, and materials to be debited to the Board's Unemployment delief Funds. Collyer, Secretary of the Newtown State Electorate Council, A.L.P., together with a Petition si~ed by 24 Residents of Newtown, asking the Mayor to convene a Public Meeting to protest a~ainat basic wage cuts, Endowment, Child Welfare, old age and Invalid pensions reductions. After the consideration of each item, Alderman 'Pawley moved that the Works' Committee's Report be "Received~, and adopted, and all recommendations contained therein be carried into effect. Seconded by Alderman Newnham, and carried.

The Engineer submitted his Repqrt of works completed or in progress during the past fortnight, which was ~Received"• . The Health Inspector submitted his Report, as contained on folios 3/4 of the Health Inspectors' 'Report Book. Alderman Dunn moved that the Report be "Received", and the applications mentioned in paragraph 2, be granted. Seconded by Ald. Ryan, and carried.

Alderman Newnh moved; · "That a letter be forwarded to the Karrickville Council, askin! if that Council will oin in cs.r.rving out the necessary repairs to Juliett st., and Harrow Road, (boundary Roads}, Seconded by Alderman Delve, and carried~ . Alderman Ryan moved; - "That the Member of Parliament tor this Municipality, be requested to arrange for a Deputation from this Council to the Minister for Transport, to ask that the surtaoe drainage trom King St., (State Highway No.1) between the Newtown and ~t. Peters' Railway Bridges, be treated as.a matter of urgenoy, and carried out at once. Seconded by Alderman Fleming, an~ carried.

It was then Resolved that His Worship the M~vor,.(Alderma.n F.B. Roberts, J.P.), the Deputy ayor, (Aldeman R.S. Goddard, J.P.), and Alderman Ryan, represent this Counci1 at the Deputation, together with any other Member of the Council, who can make it convenient to .attend. ,

Letter from the Under Secretary, Department of Local Government, explaining the conditi under which application m9\r be made for a portion of the sum of :£200,000, Which is to be made available for distribution amongst Shire and Municipal Counci for URemployment Relief 'orks. After a general discussion, Alderman Delv~ moved that the letter be wReceived", and application be made, per favor of F.M.Burke,M.L.A., to the Hon. Joseph Jackson, 'inister for Local Government, to at once receive a Deputation from this Council to ask t hat a Grant of :£5,000 be made for the relief of unempioyroent within this area; such Gr ant to be expended under present award rates and conditions on approved works, and local labour to be employed, as this Council having spent over :£4,000 of its own funds on unemployment relief this yearl, finds it is unable to apply for a portion of :£200,000 now available, on the conditions mentioned in the Circular letter from the Under/ Secretary for Local Government. Seconded by Alderman Pawley, and carried.

A Petition was received from 440 Residents of the M'unidipality of Newtown, asking that step s be taken to at once have the work of improving the stormwater drainage from King St ., (State H1ghway No.1), between the Newtown and St. Peters' Railway Bridges, ~arried out , as during the recent heavy rains, the surface drainage caused great inconvenience and discomfort to vhe Residents within this area. Alderman Fleming moved that the Petition be "Received", and F.H.Burke, M.L.A., be requested to bring the Petition under the notice of the Honorable U.F.Bruxn~r,M.L.~ Minister for Transport, and ask that the natter of drainage be treated as a most urgent ·one, as this Council's contributions to t he Main Roads Board, showed a substantial balance in favour of the Newtown Council, and the Plans prepared by our Engineer,were approved some time since., and all is in readiness for the work, whidh would give employment to local unemployed, to commence at once. Seconded by Alderman Ryan, and carried. ·

Alderman Ryan drew attention to a prosecution which had been made by the Marrickville Council against a l:ilk Vertdor f or selling adulterated milk recently, he understood that the same man was deliver ing milk within this area. The Health Inspector explained that this matter was ent irely under the jurisdiction of the Milk Bo whose attention would be called to th~ matter.
