Each Member of the Council having received a copy of the Minutes of the previous Meeting it was resolved, "That the Minutes as circulated, be taken as read and confirmed, and signed as a true record of the Mee ting held on 18th March, 1941."

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen it was resolved by the .!embers rising in silence that letters expressing this Council's sympathy be forwarded to the ~life and family of the Late Alderman W. Maundrell, and also to Petersham Council of which he was a Member, and to the Relatives of the Late William Clayton •

REPORTS.

The Engineer submitted his report of works completed or in progress during the past fortnight which was received and adopted.

The Chief Health Inspector submitted his report as contained on folio 295 of the Health Inspector's Report Book. Resolved, "That the Chief Health Inspector's Report be received and adopted with the alteration to paragraph No . 3, recommend­ing the distance for keeping poultry to be fixed at not l ess than 30.feet, and the Council now in accordance with Section 278 - 303 of the Local Government Act, and Ordinance 39 Clause 21, hereby resolves that fowls shall not be kept nearer than a distance of 30 feet from any dwelling, house or school or any premises used for manufacture, preparation, sale or storage of food within the Municipality of Newtown; and it was also resolved,x that in accordance with a Certificate issued by the Chief Health Inspector in pursuance of the power vested in him by Section 58 of the Public Health Act 1902-1937 certifying that house No . 87 Union Street , Newtown, is unfit for human habitation or occupation and recommending that the Council by an order in writing declare the said premises unfit for human habitation or occupation, and d±recting that it should not be inhabited or occupied by any person after the expiration of 30 days from date of notice unless the alterations and repairs specified in the Chief Health Inspector's Certificate are carried into effect to the satisfaction of the Local Authority, this Council now declares that house No. 87 Union Stree~,Newtown, is unfit for human habitation or occupation and shall not after the expiration of 30 days from date of notice be inhabited or occupied unless the repairs specified in the Chief Health Inspector's Certificate are first carried into effect to the satisfaction of the Local Authority.

Alderman Greenup submitted a verbal report in connection with the Conference held at the Erskineville Council Chambers,in connection with rehousing and it was resolved, "That the report be received, and Aldermen Greenup and Solomon (Deputy Mayor) thanked for representing this Council."

QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE.

Alderman Greenup asked if a record of the services of the Aldermen could be made by having a photo of the whole of the Aldermen for the present term, and His Worship the Mayor, (Mr. Alderman I.E. Ryan, J.P.) intimated that in accordance with the usual custom of past Mayors, he would make a presentation to the Council of a photo of the whole of the Aldermen, and it was resolved, that the Mayor 's kind offer be accepted with thanks.

Alderman Dunshea drew attention to the scandalous condition of Hollis Park on Sundays due to football and cricket being played there, and it was resolved that the Police be again informed of this matter, and asked to take drastic action to preserve the amenities of the Park.

Alderman Dunshea drew attention to the fact that he had noticed in the paper that the Minister for Local Government was introducing legislation to enable Councils to properly control disused brick pits.

Moved by Alderman Mrs Swift, Seconded by Alderman Mrs Fowler, "That the Minister for Railways be written to asking that 2nd Class sleeping berths be placed on the Railways in this State, especially on the lines whe re long distances are travelled." Carried.

Alderman Collyer asked if Darley Street reconstruction was completely finished, and drew attention to the dust nuisance from gravel. The Engineer replied that it was

• not completely finished, that a certain amount of dust re qu ired attention and he would attend to the matter.

It was resolve d , that the Council now go into Committee of the Whole to consider certain matters.

1. That the letter from the Minister for Works & Local Government re Gladstone Lane be received.

2 . That the letter from W. Callaghan in connection with his gang knocking off one hour before time on New Year's Eve, be received, and he be informed the Council has finished with the mat ter, and any further action is a matter for himself and the men concerned .

Resolved , "That the report of the Committee of the Whole be received and adopted ."

Moved by Mrs Alderman Fowler, Seconded by Alderman Delve, "That the attention of the Federal Government be drawn to the fact that Soldiers' wives are unable to obtain houses for renting purposes from Estate Agents." Carried •

Alderman Beaufils drew attention to the footpath in Enmore Road between Metropolitan Road and Simmons Street. The l~yor referred the matter to the Engineer for report.

Upon resuming i n Council it was reported that various matters had been considered in Committee , and t he follow i ng recommendations are made:-

1 . (a) That the appl i ca tion f or pe rmission to erect bachelor flats at No. 71 Wellington Street , be refuse d owing t o the lack of side space in accordance with the Local Gover nment Act.

(b) That the application f or permission to gla ss in verandah at 41 Edgeware Road be referre d to the Wor ks , Building & Par ks Commit tee.

(c) That the appl i cat i on for a brick fence wall for Robert Wall & Sons, Fulham Street, be approve d.

2 . That the t enders of E.A. Kni ght for £15 plus £2 for cost of cards for Kingston Ward; ' l . E. Trevor for £20 plus £3- 0- 0 for cost of cards for O'Connell Ward; J.C. Hanney for £25 plus £4- 0- 0 for cost of cards for Enmore Ward; and J. W. Strange for £20 plus £3- 0- 0 fo r cost of cards for Camden Ward, for the collection and compilation of the Rol l s of Elect ors f or 1941, be accepted.

3 . That the tender J f t he Newtown Copying Service (Miss R. Quigley) for the typing and duplicat i ng of the Rolls of Electors for the year 1941, at 5/5d. per sheet on a basis of 254 sheets , be ac cepted.

Resolved , "That the report of the Committee of the Whole be received and adopted."

His Worship the Mayor, (Mr. Alderman I.E. Ryan, J.P.) and Alderman Solomon (Deputy Mayor), Beaufils, Elvy, Dunshee, Greenup, Collyer, Fleming, Mrs. Swift and Mrs. Fowler (8.30 p.m.)

Each Member of the Council having received a copy of the Minutes of the previous Meeting, it w~s resolved, "That the Minutes as circulated, be taken as read and confirmed, and signed as a true record of the Meeting held on the 15th April, 1941".

SYMPATHY.

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen it was resolved by the Members rising in silence that letters expressing this Council's sympathy be forwarded to rela tives of the late W. Sargeant of 60 Lennox Street, Newtovm and Mr. O.J. Matthews, Managing Director of Matthews, Thompson Ltd.

From the Commonwealth Treasurer intimating that under the Commonwealth Security Regulations the maximum amount which may be spent, without the Federal Treasurer's consent, upon any building has been decreased to £3,000. and the limit which may be incurred upon hotels is £1,000. Resolved "the information be received and noted."

The Engineer submitted his report of works completed or in progress during the past fortnight, which was received and adopted.

The Acting Chief Health Inspector submitted his report as contained on folio 297 of the Health Inspector's Report Book. Resolved "That the Acting Chief Health Inspector's Report be received and adopted and all recommendations contained therein be carried into effect."

~UESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE.

Alderman Fleming drew attention to the fact that the Kingston Branch of the official A.L.?. desire to hire the No.2 Hall each alternate Thursday for their meetings and it was resolved "that the contract for the Year 1941 be renewed at the price of 5/- per night."

FLEMING R1 Alderman Fleming moved that a letter of appreciation be forwarded to Mr. Burton of LETTER TO MR . 66 Regent Street, who went out of his way to convey a message to the Engineer of a BURTON RE DRA N dangerous subsidence of a drain at Bishopgate Street, seconded by Alderman Elvy. IN BISH PGATE ST .Carried.

8641 Alderman Collyer asked if any adjustment was to be made to the closing time of the play grounds now that the Winter months are approaching. His Worship the Mayor promised to investigate the matter.

There being no further business the meeting terminated at 8.45 p.m.
