An apology was received and accepted from Alderman Goddard and Alderman Beaufils was absent in accordance with leave granted on 29th February 1944 .

Each member of the Council having received a copy of the minutes of the previous meeting, it was resolved that the minutes as circulated be taken as read and confirmed and signed as a true record of the ordinary meeting held on 23rd May 1944.

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the Member rising in silence that letters of sympathy be forwarded to Mr. Jackson, 111 Albemarle Street on the loss of his wife; Alderman Goddard on the loss of his brother; Mrs. Morevan, 14 ·vatkin Street on the tragic death of her son; to the family of the late Mrs. supple of 9 Phill i o straet · and ~xs . rr . Cregan, 24 rv:arian Street on the loss of her son, 0. J. Cregan.

From the Ministry of Munitions (per favour Mr . T. SheehanM.H.R.) forwarding information of method to be employed in assisting local plumbers to secure the release of iron for roofing and piping for drainage purposes. Resolved: nTHAT the letter be received and the suggestions contained therein be observed."

From .. :inister for the Army (per favour Mr . T. Sheehan M.H .R.) in regard to the mode of transport used by officers attached to canteen in Salisbury Road. Received.

From Rev. s.-.i . i:O:cKibbin drawing attention to the danger occasioned by the swiftly moving traffic along :::::rskineville Road . Resolved: "THAT the letter be received and the com-plaint be referred to the Newtown Police , and the writer be informed the council is co-operating .

From the Premier of New South Nales (per favour Mr. F. M. Burke and Mrs . L . Fowler M.L .A.) regarding the Boyd Sinclair case. Resolved: "THAT the letters be received and Mr. Burke and r.:rs. Fov ler be thanked for their attention and a further request be made to the Premier to hear a deputation from the Council in connection with the case.

From Dept. of Public Health covering the analysis of 20 samples of milk (all correct). Received .

From the ~:inister for Transport {per favour Mr . F.M. Burke) regarding the provision of special trams for soldiers proceeding to the L. & T. Depot, Marrickville, and advising that it is not prJposed to re-introduce a tram service terminating at Enmore . Received.

From People's Conference notifying a meeting on Culture in the Nar and the Peace, to be held on 3) th June and lst and 2nd July, inviting the council to nominate five delegates. Moved by Alderman Fleming , seconded by .lderman Greenup : "THAT the letter be received and the Council send as many delegates as possible." An amendment was moved by Ald erman Newnham, seconded by .nlderman Brannan: "THAT the letter be received." The voting being in favour of the amendment it was submitted as the substantive motion and declared carried.

From :.~inister for Labour & National Service {per favour Mr. T. Sheehan M.H.R.) regarding the method of transfer used in shifting people from one position to another, and advising that Councils were not to be permitted to build up their staffs beyond a basic figure determined in May 1943, and forwarding information regarding Mess rs. Keon and Peirce. Resolved: "THA the letter be received."

From Returned Sailors, Soldiers & Airmen's Imperial League of Australia, Newtown & Districts Sub- Branch asking Council's support in a drive for the Anzac House Appeal, and the Mayor to

· J.J convene a public meeting. Resolved: "THAT the letter be rece ived and the counc il co-operate and the Mayor call a public meeting as requested.

At this stage His Worship the Mayor in a verbal minute extended congratulations and a welcome to the newly elected member of the New South Nales state Parliament, Alderman Mrs. Lilian Fowler, which was supported by the other Aldermen and carried by acclamation . The Minute was then conveyed to l\1rs. Fowler by His worship the Mayor, to which Mrs. Fowler suitably responded thanking the Members for their kind words, and assuring them that at all times she would do her best for the people of Newtown .

REPORTS:

His Worship the Mayor (Alderman P .J. Walters J.P.) as Chairman of the Finance and Building , Committee submitted a report of a meeting held on 20th June 1944 as contained in Folio

9/1944 of the Committee's report bo ) k and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted and all its recommendations carried into effect~

The Engineer submitted a report of works progress during the past two weeks, and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted.

The Ch ief Health Inspector submitted his report in accorda nce with Folios l and 2 of the Chief Health Inspector's report book , and it was resolved that the report be rece ived and considered seriatim. Upon Recommendation No .2 bein g submitted it was move d by Alderman Greenup, seconded by Alderman Smith: "THAT the recommendation be adopted with the addendum: "'F.t:IAT the Council purchase and have screened at four theatres in the district talking slides warning the people about the rat menace . " Carried. After further consideration it was resolved that the Chief Health Inspector's report a s amended be adopted and its recommend­ations carried into effect.

ORDERS OF THE DAY :

1. Under this headin g Alderman D. Cochrane , Mayor of Marrickville, representing the sub­Committee of the proposed Sydney and Suburban Housing county council was given permission to address the Council for ten minutes in connection with the proposed Gounty council. At the conclusion of his talk Alderman Cochrane answered questions asked by the vari ous Aldermen, after which a vote of thanks was moved and a ccorded him for attending and supplying the i nfonnat ion to the Council. It was then resolved: "THAT this council appoint two delegates to attend the next meeting of the proposed Housing county counc il, and His worship the Mayor (Alderman P .J. Walters J.P.) and Alderman F . A. Newnham LL.B . were elected as Council's dele gates.

~DESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE:

Moved by Alderman Solomon, seconded by Alderman (Mrs.) Fowler M. L . A.: "THAT a letter under the Common Seal of the council be p resented to l\11' . Frank Burke, ex-M . L. A. for the district, for the services rendered to Newtown during his 27 years as the Memb er representing Newtown in the New South Nales State Parliament." Carried.

Alderman Greenup asked -(a) If the Mayor could give him any information regarding the clearing of Camperdown

cemetery, and if the cemetery had not been cleared would the May or make represen­tations to have it cleaned up;

(b) If the Works Committee would inspect Hollis Park with a view to having it levelled off.

rAlderman Smit h asked if he could be informed what the obligation of a r esident is in connec-tion with the placing of a garbage tin for the garbage collect or. The Chief Health Inspe ctor replied that t he occupier was obliged to keep the tin within 6 feet of the gate where the collector calls.

Alderman Fleming asked (a) That the works committee consider the matter of concreting the footpath in
