Each member of the Council having received a copy of the minutes of t h e pr evious meetings, it was resolved that the minutes as circulated be taken as read and confirmed and s i gned as a true record of the ordinary meeting held on , 7th December 1943 ~ and the Speci al Itee t ing held on 7th December 1943. His ",forship the Mayor submitted a brief verba l report intimating that a supply of vegetables

had been made available by the Commonwealth Food Authorities in the week precedin..; Christmas

and he had accepted same and had them delivered as far as p ossible over the vvho l e of the

Municipality but in view of the inroads on the time of the Council's employees, no further

gifts had been accepted. Resolved : "THAT the report be r eceived and ad opted. "

The Mayor asked the Chief 'darden whether he desired to bring f orward the matte r of ap~ointing

a Deputy Chief Warden in place of the late Deputy Chief ·.farden. The Chief /arden intimated

that he would be glad to nominate 1~r. P .C. Rudge of Enmore ::toad , Newtown, f or the position.

Moved by Alderman Solomon , seconded by 11.lderman Bugler: " 'i'W.T the Council forward the

name of Mr. P.C. Rudge to the Minister for N.E.S. as its nominee for the position of Deputy

Chief 1!larden ." Carried. In connection with the appointment, His 1:Torship the L:ayor

explained that provision was being made for the N. E . S . personnel to use t he room where the

Gas Company now collects its accounts instead of the Mayor ' s Room and the general of f ice, as

at present was the practice.

J- Alderman Smith asked if the Works Cormnittee would inspect the Carillon Avenue Aid Post in

lconnection with the borers attacking the timber. The Town Clerk replied that the Chief

Warden had already submitted this matter to the N.E . S. Department.

Alderman Greenup asked if any action had been taken to secure the compliance with the Council's

. requisition on 2 Church Street and asked that arrangements be made for the Building Inspector

to see that this matter is carried out and a report be submitted to the next meeting of the

Council.

.Alderman Bugler asked if the Aldermen could be supplied with a list of the men employed by the

· Council and the duties upon which they were engaged. The Town Clerk replied that he would

endeavour to have this for next meeting .

Alderman (Mrs . ) Fowler drew attention to the way t hat Mr. Hilton, Chief Ganger, had carried

on while we were without the services of an engineer and moved that the Council forward him

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the member rising in silence that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to the relatives of the late Mrs . E ._.: . Byrnes , a very old and respected resident of Newtown for many years.

REPORTS:

His Worship the Mayor (Alderman P . J . Wal te r s J . P.) as Chairman of the works , Build ing and Parks Committee submitted a r eport of a meet i ng hel d on 6th January 1944 as contained in Fol i o 1/1944 of the Committee's Report Book and it was res ol ved that t he report be received an d considered seriatim. In connection wi th Recommendation No . 1 the Engineer submitted a report advising t he estimated cost at £11. Resol ved: "THAT the recommendation a nd r eport be adopted." On Recommendation No.2 being submitted it was moved by Alderman (Mrs.) Fowler, seconded by Alderman Goddard : " THAT the matter be l eft in the hands of the Mayor , Town Clerk and Engineer to complete as soon as possible." An amendment was moved by Alderman Bugler, seconded by Alderman Fleming: " THAT t he firs t port ion of the recommendation regarding the non-installation of lavatories be deleted and t hat the council proceed to instal suitable lavatory accommodation." Amendment lost, Motion f or adoption carried . upon Recommendation No.6 being submitted for adoption an amendment was moved by Alderman Fleming, seconded by Alderman Smith: "THAT the footpath be broken up and renewed." Amendment lost , Motion for adoption carried. The Engineer submitted a r eport i n connection wit h Recommendation No . ? advising that the cost to construct the wall in concrete would be £195/ or brick £145 . Moved by Al derman Fleming , seconded by Alderma n So~omon: "THAT the repor t be received and it be referred to the Works Committee to approach the P .D.F. Company t o enquir e whether they would be prepared to meet half the expense of constructing t he wall." An amendment was moved by Alderman Newnham, seconded by Alderman Brannan: "THAT the report be received and that the wall be completed in concrete." The voting being i n f avour of the amendment , it was submitted as the substantive motion and de clared carrie d. Aft er fu r ther consideration it was resolved that the Works Committee's report as a whole as amended and al te r ed be adopted and the recommendations carried into effect.

The Engineer submitted his report of Works Progress during t he past t wo weeks and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted.

The Chief Health Inspect or submitted a report as conta ined i n Folio 3?9 of the Chief Health Inspector's report hook, and it was resolved that t he report be r ecei ved and adopte d.

ORDERS OF THE DAY:

JT l. The Town Clerk submitted a report in connection with the point of order taken at the last meeting and advised that the Mayor was correct in ruling out of order the amendment to the Finance Committee's Report as a motion already stood on t he council ' s books in conne ction with gratuities, which had not been rescinded and with which the pr oposed amendment was in conflict . Received. •

2. The Town Clerk reported that Mr. E. Robins, who retires under t he provisions of the superannuation Act on the 27th January 1944, has int imate d that he does not wish to continue in the council's service. Resolved: "THAT the r epor t be r eceived and the council accede to Mr. Robins' request to be allowed to retire f rom i ts servi ce .

It was resolved: "TF..AT the application for permission to rebuild wash-house at 59 Enmore Road be deferred pending the submission of further plans."

{UESTIONS ~ITHOUT NOTICE:

Alderman Solomon drew attention to the fact that the clock at the Newtown Post Office had ~ been stopped for a week and asked that action be taken to have it fixed.

Alderman Goddard drew attention to the pat h at the corner of Pine and Wilson Streets requir­ing attention.

Alderman Smith drew attention to a sinkage in Australia Street near chevell's Galvanising .: :Narks and the en trance to Beynon and Beynon's store in Australia Street.

Alderman Fleming moved : "THAT Australia Street paths at the east side from Lennox street to Federation Road, on the west side from Albemarle Street to Federation Road be inspected. The Mayor asked t hat this be referred to the Works Committee.

submitted to coun~il as soon as possible.

Alderman Brannan asked that the matter of re-sheeting wells street be referred to the works Committee.

Alderman Brannan drew attention to the mosquito nuisance in the Camden Ward and asked that the co-operation of the adjoining councils be sought in an endeavour to eradicate the nuisance.

Alderman (Mrs.) Fowler asked that the Engineer inspect and report on George Street.

At this stage His Worship the Mayor extended a welcome to Alderman R.W. Murden and congrat-ulated him on his recent election to the Petersham Council. Alderman MUrden suitably responded and thanked the Mayor forhis kind words.

COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE :

It was resolved that the Council do now go into Committee of the Whole to consider certain matters. Upon resuming in Council it was reported that while in committee the council had considered the Engineer's report in connection with the repairs to No.5 truck and also pointing out a list of tools required for the motor mechanic, and recommends that the report be received and the Engineer be authorised to obtain the tools set out on his report.
