Bronze for TeamBCin Air Pistol event

In ane v e n tw h e r econcentra-tion andcompletefocus canmake allthe differ-e n c e ,Team BCair pistoltarget shooters Brian Ng of Langley andDakota O’Donovan of Merritt aimedtheir way to the podium with a bronzemedal finish in the Canada WinterGames team event on Tuesday.

The bronze medal marked the greatestaccomplishment to date for both athletes;Ng and O’Donovan have only been com-peting in the sport for about a year-and-a-half. They met at a training event andhaven’t spent too much time together butrelied on their confident approach andtrusted in each other’s abilities.

“I am so happy to have competedwith a partner who can shoot likeDakota,” said Ng. “He did great.”

Ng is one of the younger competitorsin the Canada Winter Games. At just 12years of age, the Langley athlete was re-markably calm during the competition –which he credits as one of the keys to theteam’s success in the event.

“I felt very relaxed, like I was unstop-pable and nothing could bring medown,” said Ng. “I thought we mighteven get the gold but the bronze is great.”

The two-person team event requireseach athlete to hit set targets with the airpistol. They are unable to watch eachother’s results during the competition sowhile Ng knew he was shooting well, hehad no idea how his partner was doing.Once both athletes finish their rounds, theirscores are combined for a final ranking.

“We really had no idea how eachother were doing,” explained O’Dono-van. “I started out a little rough becauseI was so excited that I started to rush.That can be really hard to manage. Forme, I need to disconnect from my emo-tions and have complete focus.”

The initial rankings had Ng and O’-Donovan sitting in fourth place, just outof medal contention but after a miscalcu-lation was corrected, the duo watched asthey moved up into third.

“I was so excited when I found out wegot third,” said O’Donovan. “I’ve neverexperienced something this big beforeand I have to say it was really becauseBrian did extremely well.

Ng and O’Donovan will continuetheir quest for medals on Thursday whenthey compete in the individual event.
