"No question our forest industry hasgone through some lean years, but clear-ly we've turned the corner and arepoised for an exciting 2011," said Forests,Mines and Lands Minister Pat Bell.

The relative value of BC forest prod-ucts sent to China & Japan in Septembercracked the 40% mark for the first time, and was almost on par with those export-ed to the US. The ministry has workedhard to lessen our reliance on the marketsouth of the border, and that plan seems

to be paying off now with the US housingmarket in a prolonged slump.

In September, 40.2% of the exportvalue of BC forest products went toChina & Japan, compared to 42.5%going to the US. Year to date, the USaccounts for 47.5% of BC's total forestproducts export value compared to33.8% for China & Japan. (As a compar-ison, in 2005 the American share ofexport value was over 67%, with Chinaand Japan at just 17%. Bell is expectingover 2.5 billion board feet of lumber will

be shipped to China this year, anincrease of more than 300% from just 2years ago. This is great news for fami-lies and communities who rely on arobust forest industry, he says.

Cache Creeklandfill expansionBESI, which owns Wastech Services

Ltd. (the operator of the Cache CreekLandfill), proposes a phased expansionof the landfill that would total 42hectares. The project has been grantedan Environmental Assessment Certif.from the province. The Extensionwould provide an additional 12.6 mil-lion tonnes of disposal capacity andincrease the lifespan of the landfill byabout 25 years (or more, as recyclingefforts continue to increase).

TNRD is seeking public comment onthe proposed expansion of the CacheCreek landfill, until March 15, 2011, atwww.commentsforbesi.com

The landfill, open since 1989, pro-

vides disposal services for the westernTNRD including Ashcroft, Cache Creek,Clinton, Lytton and Logan Lake. Refusefrom TNRD transfer stations located at the Bonaparte Indian Band, Clinton, 70 MileHouse, Logan Lake, Spences Bridge, Lytton, Loon Lake and Savona is sent to thelandfill for disposal. Waste from the Lower Mainland is also sent to the landfill.
