Nicola Chiefs walkaway from BC bio-solids panel review

The BC govt & Nicola Valley First Na-tions signed the Collaborative EngagementProtocol in September of 2015 — an agree-ment to facilitate government oversightand participation in a scientific review ofbiosolids in the Nicola Valley region.

The parties have met many times overthe last 6 months, negotiating the terms &membership of the scientific review, buthave not been able to come to agreement.

The most recent government proposal— announced last week — made FirstNations' participation negligible, rele-gated to the status of observers.

The Lower Nicola Band issued a pressrelease that states: “The review they pro-posed was to be conducted by a smallgroup of hand-picked agrologists and bi-ologists — groups whose professionalbodies are, to a large extent, controlled bythe government. Agrologists too, are heav-ily dependent on work provided by thebiosolids industry, and therefore in conflictof interest for such an inquiry. We there-fore could not assent to this ‘final offer.’

We believe that much of the real inde-pendent science around sewer sludgepoints vigorously towards invoking theprecautionary principle. The recentlypublished Scientists' Open Letter on theDangers of Biosolids made this particularlyclear. With this in mind, we would like tofocus on green, sustainable alternatives toland application - methods of dealingwith the ‘waste’ issue that does not en-danger the health of the land or jeopard-ize the health of future generations.

We therefore stand by our moratorium— enacted almost a year ago today — asa way to ensure the continued health ofour people and our territorial lands.”

On Monday, the Nicola Chiefs of metwith the Minister of Aboriginal Relationsand Reconciliation, the Honourable JohnRustad, who says for now the governmentwill move ahead with the independent re-view, but will leave the door open shouldthe Nicola Valley Chiefs reconsider.
