What's changed that Merritt needs toaddress food security? According to Jill

Starrs, dietitian with the Food SecurityTask Group, higher costs for housing andfood, the economic downturn, climatechange, and the way our global food isgrown, sold and transported are a fewfactors contributing to food insecurity.

But things can change and Merritt isprimed for it! Great food programs existin town — Footprints Harvest OrganicProduce Delivery Service, the Farmers’Market, and Merritt Moms & Families.Emergency food programs include theNV & Dist. Food Bank and the SoupBowl at St. Michael’s Anglican Church.But food security is a continuum, at oneend the emergency food programs andalong the way there are programs to helpindividuals & communities improvetheir skills: community gardens,kitchens, school garden programs whereparticipants not only meet the need forfood but learn valuable lifelong skills.

The recently-launched Plant a Rowprogram is an example of this 'capacity

 building stage' in the continuum. At theother end of the continuum is FoodPolicy, which can guide changes in com-munities.
