Introducing 2009: A Season of Sunshine

An in-depth Look at the Body Systems

Page 2: MANAGER EXTRA Feb2009

Many years ago, Nature’s Sunshine began teaching people about health using a body-systems approach. That is, the human body is a group of interconnected systems—circulatory, digestive, immune, nervous, etc.—and each plays a critical role in health and life. Often though, one or more systems require extra help and nutrition. NSP products are categorized by the body systems that they support. As you refer to a product, you’ll discover key body systems that product supports. If a customer has concerns with a particular area of health, you can draw upon a grouping of products that have been formulated especially for that system. We created the Health Analyzer tool (see sample in this magazine) to help customers determine which (if any) body systems need extra nutritional support. Simply have your customer read through the list of health concerns on the left. If any of these concerns are valid, he/she should check all of the boxes in that row. Then add up all of the checked boxes in the columns. Flip the paper over to get the “analysis.” This indicates which body systems could use some extra support.

The Digestive System—Your Foundation for Health Food takes an incredible journey through the human body, and the key to successful and necessary digestion lies in the enzymes. Digestive enzymes are catalysts to a process where food is broken down into tiny particles that can either be used by the body for energy and restoration or eliminated. This system is powerful, yet delicate. Digestion starts in the mouth where enzymes in saliva start breaking down starches. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid and pepsin break down proteins. In the small intestine, various enzymes act on carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The pancreas contributes enzymes while the liver and gallbladder add bile to emulsify fats.

DID YOU KNOW?• Food should not be in your digestive system for more than 24 hours.• As we age, our bodies produce less hydrochloric acid.• About 90 percent of the absorption of nutrients occurs when food is in the small intestine.

Food Enzymes Digestive enzymes break down food into smaller particles that can be utilized for energy or for building blocks. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain active enzymes that help in this process. For instance, pineapple contains bromelain, which helps in the digestion of protein. Pineapple is commonly served at Brazilian barbecues to aid in the digestion of meats.

Food Enzymes is especially beneficial for digesting meats and proteins, but it also helps in the breakdown of starches and fats. It contains betaine hydrochloride, bile salts, bromelain, lipase, alpha-amylase, pancreatin, papain and pepsin.

Proactazyme Plus®

Proactazyme Plus blends amylase, glucoamylase, lipase, cellulase, invertase, malt diastase, alpha galactosidase and peptidase. It helps the body digest all types of food—sugars, vegetable fibers, long-chain starches, fats and proteins. All of the enzymes are plant-sourced, meaning it is vegetarian-friendly.

The Intestinal System—Keep Things Moving Your small intestine is responsible for pulling most of the nutrients from the food and beverages you consume and breaking down your food further into molecules that can be either utilized or eliminated. Any material left after traveling through this 20+ foot-long intestine passes into the colon or lower bowel, where water is removed from waste as the body prepares to eliminate it. Waste should not sit in the colon for long periods of time, as sensitive tissues there may reabsorb it.

CleanStart® Constipation or a sluggish bowel can often be the result of a low-fiber diet. A sedentary lifestyle, dehydration and lack of exercise may also contribute. CleanStart is one of our top-selling bowel cleanse products. It encourages healthy elimination and helps to detoxify the colon. CleanStart contains a drink mix and a capsule packet. The drink mix contains fiber from psyllium hulls (to push waste through), a small amount of bentonite clay (known for its ability to pull toxins along on their way to removal), aloe vera juice (to tone and strengthen the bowel tissue), chlorophyll (for cleansing and freshening purposes) plus other helpful ingredients and natural flavoring. Each capsule packet contains:• 2 capsules of LBS II®—nine herbs that promote intestinal health and help encourage proper

elimination.• 1 capsule of Enviro-Detox, a special blend of herbs and pepsin that help the body in its natural

detoxification processes.

Bifidophilus Flora Force®

Your gut is like a battleground with an ongoing war between the friendly bacteria and the not-so-friendly. The unfriendly yeasts and other invaders want a nice, warm place to propagate, and your intestinal tract provides a home with a great supply of food. The friendly flora—probiotics—keep the bad guys in check and balance out the war. They also help break down food and promote immunity. Adding to your friendly flora population benefits your intestinal system and your immune system! Bifidophilus Flora Force contains 4 billion friendly microorganisms per capsule of four beneficial strains of bacteria—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, L. casei and L. rhamnosus. Plus it contains special fiber that feeds the friendly flora, to get them off to a good start.

get in Tune with Your Immune Systemby Jody Taylor

We are surrounded by billions of bacteria and viruses. Luckily, the human body is blessed with a highly effective defense force we call the immune system. The cells of the immune system work together with different proteins to seek out and destroy anything foreign or dangerous that enters the body. It takes some time for immune cells to be activated, but once they’re operating at full strength, there are very few hostile organisms that stand a chance. Immune cells are white blood cells produced in huge quantities within the bone marrow. T-cells, B-cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages represent a few. Each performs a specific function. Some seek out and devour invading organisms, others destroy infected or mutated cells, and still others have the ability to release proteins called antibodies that mark intruders for destruction by other cells. Nature’s Sunshine offers a range of supplements formulated to help bolster immunity.

Immune Stimulator Immune Stimulator is a blend of well-researched natural ingredients known to support and boost the immune system. These include beta-glucans, arabinogalactan, colostrum, reishi and maitake mushrooms and cordyceps, which work synergistically to strengthen your body as a whole. With a strong and healthy immune system, you can enjoy a better quality of life.

Nature’s Noni®

Polynesian cultures have used the juice of the Morinda citrifolia fruit for centuries. It’s rich in phytonutrients, which nourish the body’s cells, organs and tissues. It’s also a great source of antioxidants, which fight free radical damage and protect the integrity of the body’s cells. These powerful ingredients work together to strengthen the immune system and keep you feeling great year-round.

The respiratory System Works Hard So You Can Breathe Easyby Jody Taylor

The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen, which in turn, delivers that oxygen to all parts of the body. Breathing happens with the help of the mouth, nose, throat, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm. Oxygen enters the respiratory system when we inhale. The oxygen then travels to the trachea, which is a tube that enters the chest cavity. There the trachea splits into two smaller tubes called the bronchi. These lead directly into the lungs, where they divide again into many smaller tubes connected to tiny, spongy, air-filled sacs called alveoli, which are surrounded by capillaries. The inhaled oxygen passes into the alveoli and then diffuses through the capillaries into the blood, making it oxygen-rich. Meanwhile, waste-rich blood releases its carbon dioxide into the alveoli. It follows the same path out of the lungs as we exhale. Inhaling and exhaling is facilitated by the muscles of the diaphragm. When they contract, oxygen is pulled into the lungs. When they relax, carbon dioxide is pumped out. Several factors can compromise the respiratory system, including cigarette smoke, pollution and seasonal allergens. NSP offers several products to help combat these inhaled irritants and keep this vital system healthy.

ALJ®

ALJ, our key product for the respiratory system, provides year-round support for lung and nasal passages by helping to nutritionally support the body in neutralizing allergens, and encouraging gentle cleansing of the respiratory tract. This formula includes boneset herb, fennel and fenugreek seeds, horseradish root extract and mullein leaf extract—ingredients known for promoting respiratory health.

HistaBlock®

HistaBlock is perfect for individuals with respiratory needs, especially those brought on by seasonal changes or airborne triggers. A powerful combination of stinging nettle, quercetin, bromelain and immature orange peel (which contains synephrine), HistaBlock supports the respiratory system during times of stress and helps maintain the health of mucous membranes and nasal passage tissues.

The Circulatory System’s Here to Pump You Upby Jody Taylor

On average, the body has about 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood continually traveling through it in a “loop” formed by the heart, lungs and nearly 60,000 miles of blood vessels. The circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body and picks up waste and toxins that need to be eliminated. This system has three phases. The first phase is pulmonary circulation, which is the movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again. Waste-rich blood is pumped through the heart to the lungs, where the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen happens. Following this exchange, the pumping action of the heart forces the fresh, oxygen-rich blood back out on its journey through the body. The second phase is coronary circulation, which is the movement of blood through the tissues of the heart itself. This circulation provides the hard-working heart organ with the oxygen and nutrients that it needs to survive. The third phase is systemic circulation, which supplies nourishment to all of the body’s tissues. Oxygen-rich blood enters the capillaries, where oxygen and nutrients are released and waste products are collected. The waste-rich blood then flows into the veins to be circulated back to the heart, where pulmonary circulation begins again. NSP offers several key products to help this intricate system stay balanced.

Super Omega-3 EPA®

Research shows that consuming omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA found in fish oil, may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Each Super Omega-3 softgel contains 380 mg EPA and 190 mg DHA, plus natural lemon oil to minimize the aftertaste of fish. Omega-3 fatty acids may also help maintain blood pressure levels already within the normal range as well as benefit the structural system and the skin.

mega-Chel®

Mega-Chel provides the body with a powerhouse of nutritional support for the circulatory system—including generous amounts of needed vitamins, essential minerals, amino acids, glandular substances and herbs known to support healthy circulation. Mega-Chel also contains CoQ-10, ginkgo, hawthorn and other nutrients that work together to help maintain arteries, veins and capillaries.

The Urinary System—The Body’s Filterby Jody Taylor

The major organs of the urinary system are the kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organs that filter substances from the blood and produce waste in the form of urine. Urine flows from the kidneys through two long, thin tubes called ureters, which transport it to the bladder. The bladder is a muscular vessel designed to expand and contract as needed to hold urine until it can be excreted. The bladder is connected to the urethra, which ultimately leads to an opening out of the body. The kidneys spend every minute of the day filtering out impurities. Blood enters the kidneys, which are composed of about 2 million microscopic filters called nephrons. Nephrons eliminate extra minerals, electrolyles and waste materials from the blood. In addition to their vital role in ridding the body of waste, kidneys play an important regulatory role. They: • Maintain water balance, keeping the water in tissues at a constant level. • Control calcium levels in the blood to maintain healthy bones. • Aid in regulating the acid-base balance of blood and body fluids. • Control salt levels, helping to regulate blood pressure. • Maintain a proper balance of sodium and potassium in body

fluids. • Stimulate the body to make red blood cells, the key component

of healthy blood. We cannot survive without properly functioning kidneys, so it’s important to take care of this built-in filtering system. NSP offers several supplements that provide this system with needed nutrients so it can perform its delicate chemical balancing act.

Urinary maintenance This key product for the urinary system supports blood vessels and promotes urine flow. It may also help sanitize the urinary tract and boost the immune system. This herbal formula incorporates the benefits of asparagus stem, dandelion leaf, parsley leaves, cornsilk, watermelon seed, dong quai root, horsetail stems and strobilus, hydrangea root, uva ursi leaves, eleuthero root and schizandra fruit.

Cranberry & Buchu Concentrate Buchu herb has been used for centuries as a means of nourishing the urinary tract. Similarly, cranberry juice has been used to promote a healthy biological environment, especially in the lining of the urinary tract. Working together, the ingredients in this herbal concentrate are an indispensable combination for women concerned with maintaining balance in this delicate body system.

The Nervous System—Communication’s Command Controlby Courtney Hammond

The nervous system is incredibly complex. It is composed of the central nervous system—the brain and spinal cord—and the peripheral nervous system—the nerves and wiring that branch out from the spinal cord to all parts of the body. The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system work together to relay messages back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. Because the brain is the key to this complicated network, the nervous system is central to everything from movement to sensory awareness and memory.

Nutri-Calm®

Let Nutri-Calm help you deal with the occasional stress and complexities of daily living. With generous amounts of the Daily Value of vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C, niacin and pantothenic acid, plus beneficial measures of valerian, hops and other soothing botanicals, Nutri-Calm supports your nervous system, allowing you to meet stress head-on.

4803-3 Nutri-Calm (60) $12.75 12.75 $14.70 $19.15

The nervous system contains about one billion nerve cells.

At three pounds, the average human brain makes up just 2 percent of the body’s total weight, but it uses 20 percent of the body’s energy. And a heavier brain is not necessarily a smarter brain. Albert Einstein’s brain was a mere 2.71 lbs.

The Structural System— The Body’s Frameworkby Courtney Hammond

The structural system gives the body its form and the ability to move. It is made up of bones, connective tissue and muscles. Calcium phosphate makes up both the solid outer edge of the bone and the spongy material inside the bone. And while bones stop growing in size during the mid teens to early 20s, the growing process goes on as bones continually rebuild themselves. Connective tissues make up the joints, which are designed to permit movement between bones that must meet, but not touch. They bind the bones together while cushioning and lubricating the joint. While bones and joints provide the framework, muscles create the movement by converting chemical energy from food into physical energy. There are more than 650 muscles in the body.

EverFlex®

EverFlex is a proprietary formula that offers the benefits of glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, MSM and devil’s claw herb in one convenient tablet. Together, these nutrients protect and lubricate joints and help increase shock absorption through cartilage regeneration.

Skeletal Strength®

As we age, bone support and maintenance become a priority. Skeletal Strength was designed to help maintain a strong skeletal system. In addition to providing calcium and magnesium, Skeletal Strength also includes important vitamins and minerals required for proper assimilation, plus six synergistic herbs.

The glandular System—Hormones’ Headquartersby Courtney Hammond

The glandular system helps regulate many important processes in the body, including mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function and reproductive processes. The glandular system is made up of two types of glands: exocrine and endocrine. Exocrine glands excrete substances through ducts and generally release them outside the body (such as with tear ducts, sweat glands and salivary glands). Endocrine glands produce and release hormones directly into the bloodstream where they can be taken to other parts of the body for specific use. A healthy glandular system regulates itself, monitoring the level of hormones in the blood and adjusting accordingly.

mAJOr gLANDS OF THE ENDOCrINE SYSTEm•Pituitary: the pituitary gland is considered the master gland because

it produces hormones that control several other endocrine glands, including the thyroid, adrenals and reproductive glands.

•Hypothalamus: the hypothalamus is the link between the nervous and glandular systems. Nerve cells in the hypothalamus help control the hormone secretions of the pituitary, which regulates the thyroid, adrenals and reproductive glands.

•Thyroid: the hormones produced by the thyroid determine the rate that cells burn food to produce energy.

•Parathyroid: the parathyroid produces hormones that regulate the amount of calcium in the blood so that the nervous and structural systems work properly.

•Adrenal glands: the adrenal hormones have a wide range of functions, including regulating the salt/water balance in the body and the body’s stressresponse;andinfluencingmetabolism, theimmunesystemandsexual development.

•Pineal: the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which influences the body’s sleep patterns.

•Pancreas: this organ secretes hormones vital to maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

•Reproductive glands (ovaries and testes): these glands secrete the sex hormones responsible for sexual development and reproduction.

When Dale and David Scott were presented as Managers of the year at the 2008 National Convention, Dale was speechless for one of the first times in her life. Their selection as Managers of the Year wasn’t surprising to everyone who knows the Scotts as loving and giving people, willing and ready to help anyone who needs their help at any hour of the day or night. The Scotts found Nature’s Sunshine 29 years ago. At the time, David was looking to support his heart health, and friends suggested that he try herbs. After initial hesitation, he began an herbal program and found the answers he was seeking. NSP products also helped Dale while experiencing

a health crisis of her own. After months of illness, she found herself needing emergency surgery. Because of some complications, her surgery was postponed. During that time, she met with Bonnie Clayton—who would become her upline manager—and began an herbal program. Dale’s life was forever changed from that day forward. After overcoming their health crises, the Scotts started studying up on natural products and holistic health practices. They started slowly, buying $50 worth of products and teaching Herbal Hour meetings. At the time, they lived in the country, and it was difficult for clients to see them during normal business hours. So they eventually moved their business to town. As business and inventory grew, they moved two more times. In 2007, the Scotts bought a business complex where they located their herb shop along with Shape It Up Tone & Tan, a health club with women’s circuit training. Through Shape It Up, the Scotts have been able to meet and help a new market of people interested in improving their health. The year 2008 was a landmark one for the Scotts thanks in part to the Unstoppable Challenge. “At first, I didn’t think I had time for the Unstoppable Challenge,” says Dale. However, when a few of her Managers wanted to get involved, she decided that she could best support them by joining the challenge too. “I didn’t think I had time. Boy, was I wrong. Now, we are unstoppable.” The Unstoppable Challenge gave the Scotts the opportunity to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses as well as

their purpose and passion. Dale says, “One of the most important lessons I learned from the Unstoppable Challenge was to realize and define my purpose. My purpose is to share hope, health, happiness and wealth with everyone the Lord puts in my path.” To those getting started with NSP or hitting a lull in their business, Dale advises, “Have faith in good and bad times. Remember you have something to offer. If business is slow,

think of it as your opportunity to learn.” That’s great advice from 2008’s Managers of the Year.
