Thirtieth Sunday of

Ordinary Time Oct. 28, 2018

Reading I: Jeremiah 31:7-9 Responsorial Psalm: 126:1-2,2-3,4-5,6 Reading II: Hebrews 5:1-6 Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

Theme: “The blind man replied, Master, I want to see.

Jesus told him, Go your way; your faith has saved you” (Gospel). Bartimaeus, a blind man and left to beg all his life because of his condition asked the Lord to restore his sight. His faith guided and saved him. As the Lord passing his way, he could not be silent anymore. His persistence and determination paid off, the Lord heard him. He received his sight and became a disciple.

If it is a miracle to be restored of sight, then it is a mega-miracle to have a sight from birth. We do not usually appreciate what we receive until we lose it. Being grateful to God is the proper response for everything we receive from him. Let us trust God completely and not allow darkness to rule us. “From my point of view, God is the light that illuminates the darkness, even if it does not dissolve it, and a spark of divine light is within each of us” (Pope Francis). Let our faith in God remain strong.

In the today’s gospel, Jesus tells Bartimaeus to take courage. When others seem not to care and understand your situation, you need take courage and be hopeful. God is not far. Bartimaeus overcame the obstacle of rebuke and insensitivity. “The darker the night, the brighter the stars, and the deeper the grief, the closer is God” (Fyodor Dostoevsky).

Let us pray: Lord, we may see your light always. When in darkness of sin, illumine our minds and hearts with your love and mercy. Like the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we always obey your will, Amen.

Welcome back to the ACTS Men Retreatants. God indeed is good, all the time. With your faith strengthened, may you live it daily in the ministries of His Church.

I received a communication from the Archdiocese of San Antonio Diaconate Office regarding Deacon Larry Lindsey’s new assignment effective November 15, 2018. Deacon Joe Avila from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish (downtown) will be transferred to Holy Name. A letter from the Archbishop will be published in the bulletin next week. We thank and will miss Deacon Larry and wife Nancy. Let us welcome Deacon Joe Avila and continue to pray for their new mission.

Lectura I: Jeremías 31: 7-9 Salmo responsorial: 126: 1-2,2-3,4-5,6 Lectura II: Hebreos 5: 1-6 Evangelio: Marcos 10: 46-52

Oremos: Señor, podemos ver tu luz siempre.

Pastoral Reflection By Lorraine Pruski, Pastoral Council Member

Jesus, who is the son of God, can sympathize with our sinfulness because He has been tested in all the ways we have, but He has not sinned.

In the Gospel Acclamation taken from Mark 10:45 is a very important passage, "The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many". Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. God wants us to be Servant Leaders who serve first, not Leader Servants where power comes first.

There are many things that may be in the way of our total love of Jesus Christ. Whether it be our work, play, possessions, hobbies, good times or whatever. When Jesus was leaving Jericho on the way to Jerusalem, He had his twelve apostles and a crowd of other people with him. There was a blind man named Bartimaeus who was sitting on the roadside begging. He knew Jesus was passing by and he was determined to be healed by Jesus so he tried to make his way through the crowd. The people told him to stay where he was and just accept his condition. He was so determined to be healed by Jesus he refused to listen to the crowd. Jesus knew Bartimaeus was there from the beginning and called for him to come to him. Jesus asked what he could do for him and Bartimaeus told him he wanted to be able to see. Jesus healed him because of his great faith. Bartimaeus left all of his things behind and followed Jesus. How wonderful to have a faith such as this.

Bartimaeus did not let things keep him from getting to Jesus to be healed.

All Saints Day “From the first centuries after Christ, Christians who died a martyr’s death were considered saints, who live in God’s presence forever. Every year, on the anniversary of the martyrs’ deaths, Christians would visit their tombs and celebrate the Eucharist. This practice grew throughout the centuries to include remembering other outstanding Chris-tians on the days they died. Soon the entire calendar was filled with memorials of the saints. In the ninth century, Pope Gregory IV designated November 1 as the day to remember all the saints living in God’s presence. “ For ideas on how to celebrate at home with your family please visit the website below: https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/saints/saints-activities/resource-collections/all-saints-day
