First Sunday of Lent February 18, 2018

Reading I: Genesis 9:8-15 Responsorial Psalm 25:4-5,6-7,8-9 Reading II: 1 Peter 3:18-22 Gospel: Mark 1:12-15

Theme: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel" (Gospel).

Every Lenten season, we reflect on the temptations of Jesus. Satan should his true color and his ways and styles have not changed. If you notice, his strategies are still employed today. To some degree we see them blatantly displayed and successfully executed in our others’ lives as well as in ourselves. Today’s gospel mentions Jesus’ temptations and how He successfully overcame them. In Matthew and Luke’s gospels we get the details.

Take a look at the first temptation of Jesus. It is on food. Satan requested Jesus to turn stones into bread. After a long day without food, Jesus was hungry and that would be the most necessary thing to do, eat. Yet Jesus resisted it, and reminded Satan the basic spiritual fact of man as not living alone on bread but on every word that comes from God. The true bread is God and His primacy in our lives is irreplaceable and definite. Anyone or anything that dissuades or persuades us from the truth that God is above all is simply diabolical. The second temptation is when Jesus was led to the parapet of the temple. This is the temptation of glory and self- adulation, and praise to oneself. When the world tells us that unless you are on top of the world, you are not successful. Success in this way comes with a price, and most of the time ultimately our souls. Satan has a lot of success on this one. God is ultimately our destiny and that constitute a real success and happiness. Apart from God, there is only death. The third temptation is when Jesus is shown all the kingdoms in their grand splendor and Satan promised that they all be his if only He worships Satan. Jesus put his foot down and authoritatively said, “For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” This is the temptation to power that corrupts the soul and person. God alone is be worshipped and no one else. Satan left and will try his luck on others or in an opportune time. Forty days are days of finding our way to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Fight Satan and his ways by following the ways of Jesus, they are proven to work. Let us pray: Lord, guide us always and strengthen us to fight the temptations of Satan. Give us the grace to say your words against the enemy and preserve our souls in your love and mercy. Amen

Tema: "Este es el momento de la realización. El reino de Dios está cerca. Arrepiéntete, y cree en el evangelio "(Evangelio).

Cada temporada de Cuaresma, reflexionamos sobre las tentaciones de Jesús. Satanás debería su verdadero color y sus formas y estilos no han cambiado. Si nota, sus estrategias todavía se emplean hoy. Hasta cierto punto, los vemos exhibidos abiertamente y ejecutados con éxito tanto en la vida de nuestros otros como en nosotros mismos. El evangelio de hoy menciona las tentaciones de Jesús y cómo las venció exitosamente. En los evangelios de Mateo y Lucas obtenemos los detalles.

Echa un vistazo a la primera tentación de Jesús. Está en la comida. Satanás le pidió a Jesús que convirtiera las piedras en pan. Jesús se puso de pie y dijo con autoridad: "Porque escrito está: 'Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele a él solo.'" Esta es la tentación del poder que corrompe el alma y la persona. Sólo Dios es adorado y nadie más. Satanás se fue y probará su suerte con otros o en un momento oportuno. Cuarenta días son días de encontrar nuestro camino hacia Dios a través de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. Lucha contra Satanás y sus caminos siguiendo los caminos de Jesús, se prueba que funcionan.

Recemos: Señor, guíanos siempre y fortalécenos para luchar contra las tentaciones de Satanás. Danos la gracia de decir tus palabras en contra del enemigo y preservar nuestras almas en tu amor y misericordia. Amén.

Pastoral Reflection

I invited the Holy Spirit and reflected for this weekend’s readings and the message that touched my heart is: Transformation.

We are all called into a deeper relationship with God and Jesus is the perfect example for us to follow. After the Spirit descended upon Jesus, he went into the desert and faced temptations. He placed God’s Spirit as master over the flesh leaving nothing to distract him from his Father’s will.

I will follow Jesus into the desert and face my temptations (the works of the flesh) for sin keeps me separated from the love of my Father. The Holy Spirit convicts me, revealing my sinful ways, to repent and asking for forgiveness. It is through the sacrament of confession that I experience the mercy and the love of the father I cry out “Abba”. I will continue to pray to be transformed into a true image of Jesus Christ for in John 14:6 it reads, Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

I will end with the Pope Francis ‘prayer to Mary the un-doer of knots.’

Through your grace, your intercession, and your example, deliver us from all evil. Our Lady, and untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and error, may we find Him in all things. May we have our Hearts placed in Him, and may serve Him always in our brothers and sisters. Amen _______________________________________________________________________________________

Almsgiving, meaning to give those who are in need

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS

FOR LENT 2018

“Almsgiving sets us free from greed and helps us to regard our neighbour as a brother or sister. What I possess is never mine alone. How I would like almsgiving to become a genuine style of life for each of us! How I would like us, as Christians, to follow the example of the Apostles and see in the sharing of our possessions a tangible witness of the communion that is ours in the Church! For this reason, I echo Saint Paul’s exhortation to the Corinthians to take up a collection for the community of Jerusalem as something from which they themselves would benefit (cf. 2 Cor 8:10). This is all the more fitting during the Lenten season, when many groups take up collections to assist Churches and peoples in need. Yet I would also hope that, even in our daily encounters with those who beg for our assistance, we would see such requests as coming from God himself. When we give alms, we share in God’s providential care for each of his children. If through me God helps someone today, will he not tomorrow provide for my own needs? For no one is more generous than God.”

We would like to encourage the children and families of CCD classes to practice Almsgiving this lent. Starting February 25 – March 25 the CCD classes will collect

nonperishable food items for our Outreach Ministry. We encourage all students to participate.

Adult Confirmation

Adult Confirmation Classes have begun. This is the last week to register. Classes are on Fridays at 7pm in the Religious Ed. Conference room. This class is for adults at least 18 years of age and have already received Baptism and First Holy Communion. If you have any questions or are interested in registering please call the parish office Monday—Friday 9am—5pm closed for lunch 12pm –1pm, (210) 333-5020.

Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts, and his biddings – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibly for the preparation of Confirmands (CCC 1309).

To receive Confirmation one must be a state of grace. One should receive the sacrament of Penance in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit. More intense prayer should prepare one to receive the strength and graces of the Holy Spirit with docility and readiness to act (CCC 1310).
