The Epiphany of the Lord

January 7, 2018 Reading I: Isaiah 60:1-6 Responsorial Psalm 72:1-2,7-8,10-11,12-13 Reading II: Ephesians 3:2-3a,5-6 Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Theme: “They prostrated themselves and did him

homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Gospel).

“We have come from the east to worship the

king” (Matthew 2:2). The feast of Epiphany originated in the East, where it was primarily a commemoration of the Lord’s baptism. This was the first of his “epiphanies,” or manifestations. Further epiphanies, such as the miracle at Cana, came later. When this festival spread to the West, it assimilated some of the associations of the Western Christmas and became primarily a commemoration of the visit of the Magi (Reginald Fuller).

The angel sang their praises, the shepherds

came to adore, and the three kings from the east brought their gifts to pay their homage. Herod was curious and insecure. His inquiry was a veiled jealousy and hostility towards the newborn King. The child is the Savior of the world and the King of kings.

Wisely, the three kings refused to enter into the

plot of Herod rather they changed their route on their way back home. They used the GPS (God’s Positioning Star) and made their way home safe for the baby Jesus and for themselves. Herod must had been upset and disappointed for it did not go his way.

God’s epiphanies are many and one of the

definitive and concrete is the birth of Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son. Jesus’ incarnation is the concrete expression of God’s love to us all sinners. Salvation comes from Him only as He is both the messenger and message of God. In the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist, we receive Him and partake of His Divine Nature and Being. We truly become God’s children and family because we are one with Him. Sin has no place in the hearts and lives of those who are united with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us pray, Lord may we come to adore you

always and partake of your body and blood in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. May your epiphany be a celebration of joy and love. Continue to guide us in our journey here on earth so we may reach you with our gifts of charity and service to others. Amen.

La Epifanía del Señor 7 de enero de 2018

Lectura I: Isaías 60: 1-6 Salmo responsorial 72: 1-2,7-8,10-11,12-13 Lectura II: Efesios 3: 2-3a, 5-6 Evangelio: Mateo 2: 1-12 Tema: "Se postraron y le hicieron homenaje.
