The 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) January 28, 2018

Reading I: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Responsorial Psalm 95:1-2,6-7,7-9 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 Theme: “In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do w i t h u s , J e s u s o f

Nazareth” (Gospel)? Often, we see lives that are disturbed and ruined. People cry out for help and some desperately because their lives have turned into a burden if not a terrible story of agony after agony. We can look for answers from what we can understand yet will never provide us the adequate and satisfying solution to such basic yet repetitive cycle of suffering. Not being cynical, but a profound understanding of the schemes of powers beyond what humans can handle and comprehend. In the gospel today, we actually read the encounter of Jesus with a man possessed by an unclean spirit (Satan). Satan became in plural form, or legions because like a chameleon he can appear in many forms and colors. He is a master deceiver and his goal remains the same, and that is to lose our trust in God. St. Paul recognizes this battle when he says, “finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:10-15). In the first reading, Moses reminded his people to be attentive God and to His messengers. Identifying God and His voice through the prophet is essential to obeying and following Hm. By identifying God, we know who is not and who are the pretenders, and therefore clear about His will and love. Here are the three ways to know God and His ways and avoid Satan’s deception. 1. Your prayer life is constant. The content and substance of your prayer is praise and honor to Him. 2. You are not ambivalent on God’s ways and command. It means that you can identify morally and spiritually what is God’s command and what is the temptation of the Devil. In doubt, you consult the Holy Spirit. 3. You are at peace because you trust God and your faith in Him is strong. Let us pray: Make me strong in my faith and trust in you. Free me from the deception and temptation of the enemy. Amen.

Pastoral Reflection By Sal Segura, Pastoral Council

Hello my fellow Holy Name family, I hope many blessings have been falling upon you and your families. I hope you have enjoyed todays readings and found something meaningful that relates to you. What I got from to-day’s readings and Gospel is Gods divine authority how he is so powerful and loving. How he commands every-thing of our earthly world and everything in the spiritual world, to me he demonstrates his glorious mercy to-wards us. If he will cleanse a possessed man and show him his love, he will surly protect and show mercy and for-giveness towards all his children. Because if we remain faithful to him he will also remain faithful, no matter what obstacles are placed before us he will continue to guide us in our journey towards heaven. Thank you again for allowing me to be apart of todays reflection. ______________________________________________________________________________________

Adult Confirmation

Registration for Adult Confirmation is available now. Adult Confirmation Classes begin Friday February 16th at 7pm in the Religious Ed. Conference room. This class is for adults at least 18 years of age and have already re-ceived Baptism and First Holy Communion. If you have any questions or are interested in registering please call the parish office Monday—Friday 9am—5pm closed for lunch 12pm –1pm, (210) 333-5020. Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts, and his biddings – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish commu-nity. The latter bears special responsibly for the preparation of Confirmands (CCC 1309). To receive Confirmation one must be a state of grace. One should receive the sacrament of Penance in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit. More intense prayer should prepare one to receive the strength and graces of the Holy Spirit with docility and readiness to act (CCC 1310).

Parish Mission Statement: To unite our Parish family to grow in faith, love, and charity as we become active stewards in our church and community.

Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller celebrates mass with School Children

Our Church was graced by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller on Friday, January 19th, at the 8:30 a.m. mass to celebrate the children of Holy Name School. The pews were filled with school children, teachers and parishioners and the Children’s Choir, who provided the music, was magnificent. One specific song really stood out. It was “Malo, Malo, Thanks be to God” in which the words, thank you, were sung in 17 languages. The Archbishop told the children, “We are very proud of you. You are important to us.” During his homily, he addressed the children directly with his message that when God touches your heart you can do great things. Trust in the Lord; don’t be afraid; don’t be angry; choose God and let the Holy Spirit shine in your hearts.
