The Solemnity of the Ascension

May 13, 2018 Reading I: Acts 1:1-11 Responsorial Psalm 47:2-3,6-7,8-9 Reading II: Ephesians 1:17-23 or 4:1-13 Gospel: John 16:15-20 Theme: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon

you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Gospel). In the sight of many, Jesus ascended to heaven. The account is very powerful to dispel all doubts on the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection of Jesus builds our faith and that such faith is founded on real and true event of the life of Jesus Christ. Or as the Acts of the Apostles say, “He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3). Doubts, skepticism, cynicism or simply unbelief is fueled more by inability to reconcile suffering with God who is good. Or to some, it is the will to be free from God himself who they think is prohibitive of individual liberty. The Ascension of our Lord points to where we are going and the time when the Lord will come again (parousia). In the meantime, we are commissioned to proclaim the message of Christ to all the ends of the earth. We are tasked to spread the good news and not to stand idle looking at the sky. We are given the work to baptize and teach the truth of God. We are given the power to battle the enemy with the power and presence of God. Though ascended, His abiding presence is in the Holy Spirit. We are not abandoned; rather we are strengthened and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Simply put, the Ascension of the Lord tells us that there is a place other than where we are. There is heaven and the Church is on a march towards it. In and by the Holy Spirit, the life, presence, and power of God is with us who believe and trust in His love. Our temptation is to lose faith in Him and go for it ourselves. Ironically, it is done in the name of freedom that we can doom ourselves. Death and true death is when we are separated from God. Hope is alive for those who can see beyond what they only can. Let us pray: “Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy, Amen” (St. Augustine).

DAVID PEDRAZA, PARISH COUNCIL MEMBER

The remaining apostles and about one hundred and twenty others stool around Peter. He had an announcement to make. It concerned the replacement of their former companion, Judas, the “guide to those who arrested Jesus”, the one who Jesus refers to as the “son of destruction” in the gospel today. From our modern perspective, it seems that Peter proceeded much like the chair of a meeting. He quoted the “by-laws”: “The replacement must be one who had been with them for the baptism of John to the day that Jesus was taken from us.” Two men were nominated for the position; Joseph, called Barsabbas, or Justus, and Matthias. They drew lots and Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. Joseph, the man not chosen to be one of the twelve, was nevertheless, a truly blessed person. He had been with Jesus and the apostles during Jesus’ entire public life. It is possible that he felt some dis-appointment when he was not chosen. All of us share with him some instance when we feel a sense of loss when we are not selected for a position, or rejected for membership in an organization. When we put these situations in perspective, as Joseph must have done, we see the obvious blessings that God continues to shower upon us. We may even see more clearly what our true mission in life is. All is never lost; as the psalm for today reminds us, “…Forget not his benefits.” Parts of the second reading (1 Jn 4:11-16) often recur in Christian hymns, on banners, and in Christian discourse in general. This short passage ends in a rational, eloquent summary: “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.” Whether sung, quoted, or contemplated each day in prayer, the message is complex, yet direct. Love, and remain in the presence of the Lord. This is a joyful and gentle reminder. How can we keep from living this message? Imagine the upturned face of Jesus as he prays the one long prayer to the Father that makes up the entire gospel for this Sunday. This moment in Jesus’ life reflects not only his love for the Father, but also his oneness with him. Jesus also prays that we will be one with him. We are no longer of, or belonging to the world; we remain in it, now protected by God from the evil one. Jesus prayed, “As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.” We are consecrated by Jesus in the truth. Spread the message that God and his truth is love, and whoever remains in love, remains in God. We have been give not only a sense of belonging with God, but also a mission to be in the world to spread his word. We do have a mission for him, with him and in him.

This is the first of many communications in our bulletin for the upcoming On the Way - ¡Andale! Capital Campaign. This is an exciting time for our parish and parishes throughout the archdiocese. This campaign will have a tremendous impact on the needs of our parish while also enabling our vibrant and growing archdiocese to address the bright future of the Church in South Central Texas. Over the last few months, with the help of lay leadership at Holy Name Parish and the archdiocese, we have identified our most pressing needs as a parish. We have chosen to build a new multi-purpose building to house the Outreach Ministry, Ministry Meeting Rooms, and the CYO with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign. The campaign will be led by Father Martin and chaired by Joe Lopez & David Torres. Together, we have recruited a team of volunteers to assist with this important effort and to help prepare our campaign communication materials. We will be officially kicking off the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign at Masses on July 14 & 15. Please see the enclosed Capital Campaign Preview/Frequently Asked Questions brochure in today’s bulletin for more information and stay tuned for additional bulletin updates leading up to the kickoff!

1. The Holy Name Parish needs a few good men and women to count our offerings. If you have 3 hours a month of your time to donate, enjoy good company and fellowship and like to handle money the Finance Council can use your help. Assuring weekly offerings are accounted for properly is a necessary and rewarding Ministry for our Parish. If you would like to consider serving on a counting team please contact Gary Mulhollen 210-722-8811. We can use your help. 2. The Holy Name Parish needs the following for all masses; Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, Lectors, Gift Shop Volunteers, Hospitality Ministry or open up a Ministry. Let the Holy Spirit guide you and say Yes! Please sign up in the church foyer. Father Martin will train volunteers. 3. The Holy Name Capital Campaign needs you. Please consider volunteering in the 2018-2021 Capital Campaign. We need volunteers to help Promote, Explain & Follow up on all parishioner campaign pledges. Sign up sheets are in the foyer. Thank you. From its humble beginnings as a mission of St Margaret Mary Church in 1957 to its dedication as a stand-alone parish on June 29, 1961, Holy Name Parish has been serving the southeast side of San Antonio for over 60 years. From a small eight-room school in 1961, Holy Name School has overcome challenges over the years and now enrolls over 250 students, Pre-K through 8th grade. With the closing of St Margaret Mary Catholic school in 2017, Holy Name School became the only Catholic elementary and middle School serving southeast San Antonio. In service to the surrounding community, Holy Name Parish provides a CYO Program for the area youth, food and financial assistance outreach program for community residents as well as an Activity Center that serves other community needs. With “vision” from 11 pastors and a faithful community, Holy Name has been spreading God’s Word and spiritually guiding and educating children and families. In addition, we recently dedicated Our Lady of Guadalupe Grotto as an additional area of prayer and looking forward, have plans to construct a multi-use building. We hope to continue and realize some of these visions through the On the Way-Andale! Capital Campaign.

Our condolences and prayers to the families of our parishioners who died recently: Ruben Tovar Maureene Carraway Erma Cardenas Joe Rios Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual shine upon them, Amen.

“The word FIAT itself is from the Latin, literally meaning "Be it done;" it is the 'yes'' of Mary at the Annunciation - "Be it done unto me according to Thy word." When that humble surrender was made the Holy Spirit filled Mary with Divine Life. So it is with us, as we imitate Mary's humility, we too become totally open to God's plan for our life. Jesus was born of that surrender, and the world is saved by it. As we participate in his life everyday we learn to hold Mary and the Holy Spirit close to our hearts. This is the secret of Pentecost.”
