H.O.G. 1066 News
A t last. The riding season is here and as you will have
seen, the season is packed with rides both here and abroad with many events and parties (even a
ride in a glider!). Hope you are still not trying to dodge Dougie (Membership Officer) because you
know that he will eventually get you! You will also know that Bealy and the Road Crew sat down several months ago to work out the rides for this year and despite having a really full calendar we still find ourselves finding time to squeeze in more requests for us to attend events. Typical of those requests that we don’t want to turn down, even if they come to us late in the day, are ones such as leading the Brighton Marathon and taking part in the Eastbourne Carnival. Both very high profile events, thousands of people on route and a chance for us to promote Harley-Davidson and 1066 Chapter. We will also receive a number of requests for us to es-cort weddings and Prom nights. These events are al-ways good fun and I know a lot of you like to take part. This year Andy Leany from the Road Crew is co-ordinating these rides, so if you have anyone approach you regarding such rides, please speak with Andy. We always use these events to raise money for our Chapter charity, so many people benefit from us having fun. Talking of charities...........Thank you to everyone who put forward suggestions for the Chapter Charity for this year. This is always a very difficult decision for the Com-mittee to make every year because there are obviously many deserving causes. However, I am pleased to be able to tell you that with the fund raising plans we have for this year we will be able to support to two charities. The first will be Guide Dogs for the blind. With the amount we hope to be able to raise towards a Guide Dog we will actually be able to choose a name, which would be cool. (what are the chances of Harley?). We would hope that the new owner will live in the south east region and we, as a Chapter, will be able to have regular contact. There will also be opportunities for us to ride and meet other Guide Dogs and there owners which will make for some good pictures. The other Charity we have chosen is the Sara Lee Trust, based in Sussex. The trust provides complementary therapies, counselling and creative therapies for people living through cancer and other serious illnesses. The trust is fully endorsed by Macmillan Nurses and the local Primary Care Trust. It is always good to hear about how more members are wanting to get involved in the running of the club and I am very pleased to welcome the newly formed ‘Press-Gang’ who will be working closely with Hogtog (Editor). There role will be fully explained further on in the maga-zine. Please help them out when you can. I hope you are all getting along with the new web site and you will see changes to the weekly newsletter (Chapter Email). Both the web site and the newsletter are important ways for us to get information out to you, the members, at short notice. So, please take a regular
look and take the time to read the information as you could very well miss out on something. As I mentioned previously, Dougie will be chasing peo-ple up for their membership money and you will also find, probably not far behind him, Steve George, who will not actually be after any money, you will be pleased to hear, but your mileage of course. This is a massive task every year for Steve to collect details of nearly 200 rid-ers, so please help him out and get your starting mileage to him as soon as possible. You will recall that last year the Chapter won two awards clocking up over 600,000 miles between us. We better our figures every year so this year is going to take quite an effort to beat that. I am really sorry that the Kick Off ride was not able to go ahead because of the weather. On the previous day Bealy, Greeny and myself were scouring the internet trying to find a weather report that looked half decent but it was not to be. The fact that snow was forecast for the place we were due to stop and have lunch really put an end to it. As you might appreciate, because of the num-bers involved it not possible to just ring round and find another location at short notice and then check the route. I really felt for Greeny. He had been working on this for weeks and a few of the Road Crew and been out with him on recce’s right up until a couple of days before hand. I am hoping that we might be able to fit the ride and lunch into another day during the summer. However, as always, the Kick Off ‘House Party’ was a great success. The hotel made us all very welcome. My thanks to all those that arrived on Saturday morning to help Clare decorate the place. You may recall that the main raffle prize was a free bike service from Shaw Harley-Davidson. This was actually won by Harri Harri-son who just happens to live up in the Midlands, so, not just a short ride to the dealership. Harri decided that the prize could go to auction and the money go into our charity fund. Bids were received from several members and the highest one was made by Grinny (Paul Grinsell) who paid £200. many thanks Shaw H-D for the prize, to Harri and Grinny for their generosity. Talking of generosity, Steve Westall was sponsored by many Chapter members on Saturday night for his Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. This is a ride that Steve takes on every year and always gets a good response. He raised £365 on the evening alone. If you would like to sponsor Steve please give him a call on 07919 988384. Also, many of you will be aware that Roy and Sheila Swallow spent a lot of time putting together a couple of DVD’s of the USA trip. They have been selling them to members for the last few weeks and as a result handed to me £230 for our chosen charities. A big ‘Thank You’ to both of them. Great DVD put together by Clare promoting the rides for the coming year. Another great production. So, here we go then. Hold tight. Let’s hope for some de-cent weather.

I t’s raining, it’s pouring…. This has to stop! We can’t have a
repeat of last year. Think positive!
We have two new bikes coming to the dealership real soon!
The FXSB Breakout; this is a super-sleek Softail running with a 21” front wheel and the whopping great 24” on the rear. The power train is the huge 103” twin cam for some monster grunt! This is a slightly de-chromed version of the CVO Breakout that was launched last year, but it still has all of the ‘wow’ factor. Available in three colour options, Vivid Back, Big Blue Pearl and Ember Red Sunglo, prices start at £15,645. We should see these at Shaw’s at the end of April.
Also coming is the FXDBA Street Bob Special Edi-tion. As with the Breakout, this has the massive 1690, 103” twin cam motor, and has all the usual great styling of the regular Street Bob, but this will come in one funky colour scheme only, two-tone Big Blue Pearl and Vivid Black with red pinstriping and red wheels for that old school hot-rod look. The price for this is £11445, and we should already have it in the showroom as you read this. Both bikes come with ABS as standard.
We would like to congratulate the Chapter on win-ning the H.O.G. mileage programme for the Fourth year. Greatest number of miles (635,369) and greatest number of participants (181). Awesome guys! This really show how much you all love riding those Hawgs. Let’s see if we can make it five years!
It’s that time again when I will be packing my bags for a little trip to the annual HOT training, or as it used to be called, Primary Officer Training. This year it is being held in Milwaukee; very exciting, as we will be visiting the Harley-Davidson Museum and the Factory. As well as working very hard to ensure we are running our Chapter in the best way possible, we will at-tend several seminars covering many issues ranging from the Chapter/dealer relationship, to safety on ride-outs, and many other topics. It is essential that we keep up to date with changes that go on with H.O.G., but it’s also
such a great way to meet H.O.G. members from across the world, and share ideas and stories and maybe a few beers! Bealy, Melissa Tuttle, Steve George and Wolfie will be accompanying me.
Things are really hotting up in the Speed & Custom Divi-sion. Around 20 projects are currently in either the design stage or actually on the bench. Some of these bikes will be going to Australia, Lebanon, Italy and even Las Vegas!
Keep logged into our Facebook page to get all the latest pictures and updates.
We are also very busy in the Service Department, so if you need a service, MOT or some genuine accessories fitted, give us a call soon. We are offering a full pre-season valet as well, to get the Hawg looking all beautiful
for this year’s extra nice riding season.
Don’t be shy. Pop down to Shaw’s for a chat and a coffee, or grab a bur-ger from the world-famous Munch Box!
Take it easy.

H.O.G. 1066 News
N ow we’re shaking off
the cobwebs and back out on the road after a long, cold, wet, winter,
here are a few things that would be
good to consider.
In the last magazine I wrote about some simple pre-ride checks, but the most important component on the bike is the nut holding the handlebars!
So a few things to consider: After
checking the mirror, doing the appro-priate shoulder check (left or right, as necessary), and indicating, try to posi-tion the motorcycle on the road to get the “early view”.
For example, you are riding along a straight country B road, and a couple of hundred yards ahead you can see a parked vehicle on your side of the road. Instead of approaching the vehi-cle on the left of the centre of the road, consider mirror, shoulder check, indicator, so you can safely move over to see around the parked vehi-cle, looking to see if there is any ap-
proaching traffic or any other hazard.
If there is, simply move safely back into your original road position, rolling off the throttle. However, if the early view reveals a clear road ahead, and it is safe to do so, consider staying in your new road position, covering the brakes, giving as wide a berth as is sensible as you pass the parked vehi-cle, then moving smoothly back to your side of the road. With a bit of practice, this can often be achieved without rolling off the throttle.
John Pedder
H ere we are then. The
start of another season, and what an action-packed riding season we
have planned. Apart from the fact that Him upstairs is
sleeping in and forgotten to sort out the weather. The Spring Equinox has passed and it seems we are still in deepest winter with snow forecast for southern England, and the frozen north under loads of the white stuff. As they say: ‘Things can only get bet-ter.’
The new website will have all the rides listed, so get onto it and put the dates that interest you in the diary. If
you are looking to go on an away-trip that involves booking accommodation and or venue tickets, may I suggest you register your interest sooner rather than later. Due to the demand for these trips you may well find that rally tickets sell out or accommoda-tion is limited. Don’t wait for the full ride details, as events like rallies do sell quickly.
The new roadies (Barney, Nick, Micko and Gus) have been out on their training sessions and are looking for-ward to leading their first rides. No really, that hollowed-eyed look is just an illusion and they really are happy……. Please do support them on their virginal ride outs.
We continue to receive requests for charity, wedding and proms events
and I would like to thank Andy Leaney for taking on the task of coordinating this. We raise a lot of money for our chosen charities this way, so again, your continued support is most appre-ciated. It never ceases to amaze me the numbers that will turn out to see our pride and joys.
Maz and I would also like to thank you all for your concern and support while I was ill earlier this year. I am now fully recovered and will have no lasting effects. Due to the nature of the illness I had a full testing pro-gramme and it appears I don’t have malaria either!
So all being well, I hope to see you out on the road sometime soon.
Bealy
W ith a bit of luck
you’re sitting there reading this and smiling at your fond Kick
-Off-House-Party memories. Or
you’re looking through the great photos Tracey has taken and put onto the website. But as I write, my lounge floor is strewn with crème eggs, boxes of beer and bat-tery operated hamsters - bring it on!!!
What’s next? I hear you shout…
...LILLE PARTY WEEKEND…1st, 2
nd
June!!!
Rev up your entente cordiale and get ready for some serious fun! Lille Europe Chapter (our twins) are com-ing to visit, and we’ve got a great weekend lined up – rides, lunch, a HUGE party on the Saturday night - it’s gonna be merveilleux!!!
Lille Chapter are staying at the Boship Farm hotel and that’s where
the Saturday night party’s gonna be. It’s also where the mass ride-out will start on the Sunday morning. The Boship Farm hotel bedrooms have all been reserved for our Lille Chapter guests so please don’t try to book in there. Good news though - if you want to stay overnight for free, a mere stagger from the entertainment, you can camp on site. Please book your pitch with me. Or if you’d like a hotel nearby, you’ve either got the Travelodge at Hellingly (over the road) or when that’s full, the Premier Inn at Polegate roundabout. The Pre-mier Inn is just under 4 miles away. NB If you stay at the Premier Inn you can leave your bike at the Boship overnight if you want and get a taxi. And you can come back and have breakfast at the Boship with everyone else on Sunday morning if you like.
If you’re not staying overnight after the party then why not come and breakfast with everyone before the ride-out? Buy your Boship breakfast tickets from me (tickets in advance
only).
Lille party tickets are on sale now!!!
Lille Sunday breakfast tickets are on sale now!!!
Finally from me for now, those of you who read the website may have spot-ted something - the 1066 Christmas bash is gonna be at Pelham House hotel in Lewes on 14
th December.
Why am I mentioning this so early? Because the 1066 Christmas bash always sells out and this year there are only 30 rooms available at the venue. So if you’d like to stay over-night please ring and book your room soon. The room rate we’ve got is £95 B&B. You’ll need to quote your 1066 membership number when you book.
OK, I’ll let you get back to browsing Tracey’s excellent Kick-Off photos now. Here’s wishing you a brilliant riding season – have fun and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!?!@!!

Y ou will have
seen the 2013 – 2014 Membership card by now
and I hope it meets with your
ap- proval, even if you weren’t on the USA 2012 trip. The diorama is of Monument Valley, taken on my phone. Somehow, it doesn’t look real, more like a com-puter generated graphic, and I can envisage the Road Runner tearing along the track in the picture. Beep beep. It is a very special place, and easily exceeded all expectations, even if it was surprisingly cold.
A very rare event has just taken place, one that happens only every 9 or 10 years. No, it’s not that I’ve just bought a round, or that I didn’t eat much at the last Chapter meeting, but the arrival of my new Harley:- a fully loaded 110
th
Anni-
versary Road King.
It’s been repainted silver (with the standard black) so it will be differ-ent from all other Anniversary bikes. It carries the same registration num-ber as my old bike. Déjà-vu you could say.
It’s obviously exciting to get a shiny new toy, and I may even clean it once or twice until the excitement wears off. First impressions are that it is big and heavy, and quiet on stan-dard pipes, with good brakes and excellent mirrors. It feels very planted, and the gearbox is less clunky than the bikes we had in the US. It doesn’t pink either! Hoorah for
high octane UK petrol. Love the slide-on covers on the front crash bars. They really help to keep the muck and rain off your legs and the bike.
Everyone at Shaw’s, and at Image Design have done a great job, and I’m very pleased. I wanted a King Tour Pack for when we go touring, but Lin has discovered that it swal-lows both helmets, and wants it left on, so I’ve shot myself in the foot a bit. That armchair on the back just looks too comfy!
There is an element of sadness too. My Superglide has been a really ex-cellent all rounder, and I will be very sad when it goes. A Dyna, which is relatively light and manageable makes a great alternative to the big tourers. With throw-over panniers, and a large bag on the rack, you can carry
plenty of stuff, and take it all off when you arrive. There’s loads of room on them for two-up riding,
they’re com-fortable, and
maybe, they have the best power-to-weight ratio in the
range, apart from the V-Rods.
I hope the new bike, which has got a provisional name, serves me as well as the trusty Superglide did, over the coming years .
Finally, new members to welcome are Jules Wegner, Malcolm and Mandy Duffield, Pierre Burel, David King, David Oliver, Tim and Sharon Burton, and John Beechey, not to mention Steve Willis and Lester from Shaw’s, who are going to try and ride with us more this year.
We look forward to seeing you all out and about.

I hope you like the new-look
magazine. This issue has been an exciting one to produce as there have been so many changes. And I am not referring to the cosmetic changes alone.
As you may have heard, the Chapter now has some roving reporters which will predominantly be reviewing Chap-ter events which have hitherto not been covered suitably. On page 7, you will see their photos and introductions. Please help them, help us, cover the many events we host over the year. Indeed, this issue has Sally’s first re-port on the Kick-Off “House Party”.
We have started our new feature fo-cusing on your bikes in this issue. First up is ‘Medic’ Clive’s ‘AVATAR’ which looks simply stunning in the flesh - so to speak. Please send in photos and some background information to have your bike featured in your Chapter magazine.
Back by popular demand, we also have the member profile section. If you want to be featured here, please contact Ann (she is usually at the 6 Bells meet-ing). In addition, the Committee page has made a return but now features the Road Crew.
In 2012, we won the Chapter Chal-lenge for the highest Chapter Mileage for an incredible 4th consecutive year. The other Chapters now have us in their sights, so we need to make sure that every mile counts. Please contact Steve George (contact details are on page 11) to find out how you can be part of our history - and it won’t cost you an extra penny! If we all sign up, we should win the Greatest Number of Participants as well!
As usual, this magazine could not have been brought to you without the help of some special people: namely, Anne Hutchinson, the awesome proof-reader; Ann Almeida, the intrepid mem-ber-profile compiler; Tracey Pascoe, the incredible Chapter photographer. Not forgetting my wife (aka The Editor-in-Chief), Caroline who sits patiently for many weeks whilst this magazine is put together and casts an eagle-eye over it before it is sent to the printer. So, please direct any complaints directly to her - good luck!

1066 ‘Medic’ takes first Golf Masters title
M arch 17th saw the staging of the
first 1066 Spring Slicers Golf Masters Challenge. This took place at the fabulous Seaford Head Golf Course which has a great mix of holes and layout to make it interest-ing and a challenge for even the most accomplished players.
This was the first Spring meeting following on from a number of historic Autumn ones that take place outside of the riding sea-son.
As the golf games have be-come a regular feature and part of the 1066 social calen-dar, it has been decided to spice it up a bit by producing a trophy to compete for. From here on in then, it has been decided to make our Autumn meeting a friendly and social team game of Texas Scramble, and the Spring meeting the slightly more competitive individual game.
So, on a moist and breezy day play-
ing under Staple-ford Rules, Clive ‘the Medic’ Butler ran out as the winner on the day scoring 42 points; he was followed closely by Bob Eagle on 41 points, and in third place was Tim
Emsley on 40 points. Precious little room for complacency here
Clive. In the side competi-tions, the
longest drive went to
Nigel Bridle and nearest-
the-pin went to Bob Eagle.
The next Au-tumn Hookers
meeting will take place in late Sep-
tember / early Oc-tober and we’ll be
very keen to see more of you in-
volved. It is open to the regular members
and our newcomers to the Chapter, and will be
widely promoted via the newsletter, so keep your
eyes peeled for that.

Trig & Carolyn
I f you have read Director Skelly’s profile page on the Chapter website, you will know that he started riding “(legally)” on a Vespa scooter. Well, like
Skelly, I also had a Vespa scooter. It was 1968 and I had it for about a year. But after coming off about six times (twice on black ice in one journey), I de-cided on another form of transport and passed my driving test for a car.
I never even considered a motorbike until during a trip to Australia. We had arranged a trip around Uluru (Ayers Rock) as pillions on a couple of Softails. Amazing! It came as no surprise when we were discussing a hobby for our retirement years (which started this year) that a Harley-Davidson was the perfect solution. My wife, Carolyn, thought that considering we had not been on 2 wheels for 45 years, it would be safer to be on 3 wheels, hence the trike.
When I purchased the bike from Shaw’s, for conversion, I was told about the Chapter and joined straight away.
e already been on a number of ride-outs and attended most Chapter meetings at the 6 Bells where we met some really nice people and have struck up many friendships.
Sally Marshall
M y name is Sally Marshall (the loud raffle lady at the Six Bells).
My partner Jason (Koop) Cooper and I have been members of 1066 Chapter since 2010. We bought the bike just before SofER and were lucky enough to get a couple of tickets. We didn’t have time to go to any meetings beforehand, so we just packed up what we could and took our chances. We must have looked like the Beverly Hill Billies with the amount of stuff we man-aged to fit on the bike, all wrapped in black sacks. We arrived, started setting up and while Koop was blowing up a couple of lilos, Kevin(K dog ) and Judy came over and offered us the use of a double airbed. After we were sorted, everyone - Lin and Dougie, Hogtog , Skelly, Tracy and so many more - came to say hello and to check we were OK. We had a fabulous weekend and left feeling that we hadn’t just joined a club, we had joined a family.
I’d like to say I’m quiet and retiring, but if I did, Hogtog would be laughing so much this would never get printed. I love meeting people, getting to know them and chatting. I’m hoping this will help me to write some interesting and
entertaining articles about the social side of 1066. I hope you will all help by sharing your stories with me of our parties and social functions.
So bye for now until I write my first article.
Steve “Spit” Pitt
I t seems everything comes in threes: my current bike is a Dyna StreetBob – my third Harley; 2013 is the third time Dougie has cornered me and ex-
tracted a Membership fee from my vice-like grip. What else? Oh yes! Hogtog presented me with one of three patches, issued to the 'Press-Gang'. The idea is that between us we will have a feature in the Chapter magazine about Chapter events - not strictly about ride-outs.
As mentioned above, this is the third year I have been a member of the Chap-ter, and I can only say what a great time I've had with some great people.
In the far distant past, I've owned several bikes including a Kawasaki Zephyr, Suzuki Bandit, Suzuki GSXR and a couple of other bikes I won't bore you with; and then I saw the light in the shape of a 883 Sportster. The rest is now a cloudy memory.
I live in sunny Hastings with my very lovely and understanding wife, Angela, and a cat called ‘Tigger’. But with our thirteen grand-children (no wonder I like rides out), there is never a dull moment! I'm a BT Openreach engineer, and I've worked here for 25 years. I may get used to it one day............

W e ar-rived at
The Windsor Hotel in Wor-thing, one of
several places that Clare had
investigated last July. We had taken over
the whole hotel which really gave a ’House Party’ feel to the place. With 75 people staying overnight, I was getting excited; ‘a little kid in a sweetshop’ comes to mind. We checked-in, and I have to say, I was very impressed with the staff and how helpful they were. We dumped our bags and after I’d done the usual womanly bit and checked that the loo etc. was spot-
less (it was), we made our way to the bar. Mind you, the room Des and Tracey won at
the Christmas Raffle made us all look like
the poor relations; it was fabulous and couldn't have been won by a nicer couple. We all knew that Bealy and the Road Crew had to make the difficult decision to cancel the ride-out due to safety con-cerns, and I
wanted to see if it had dampened
people’s spirits. It hadn't, and 1066 was its usual upbeat entity; everyone was doing the usual talking nineteen to the dozen and chilling. A quick look at the room where the party was to be
held, showed the work that Clare and The Events Crew had been doing since 10.30am. It was going be a good night.
Af- ter a quick
scrub and change of clothes, we were back down for our dinner, where the rest of the guests joined us bringing the total up to 150 people. People were
ready to party as only 1066 can. What a dinner! The food was fantastic. All around me were people rav-
ing about it: how much there was, how hot it was…. I didn't even have to ask for more spuds (it’s the Irish in me) because there was plenty of everything, and served so quickly that
there wasn't time for it to go cold.
So, once din-
ner was out of the way, what did Clare have planned for us?
Battling Bunnies! I have never seen anything so funny. First we had to
build them and then race them - well try to, as not all of them would behave. You could have been at the Grand National, there was such excitement from people who claim to be responsible adults. Table 5 not only won the race they also managed to pick up Best in Show. Well done table 5. There was also an excellent DVD of ride
-outs to watch. Clare was going all out to make sure we

ber.
The raffle followed; Julie and Tracey had done a great job selling the tick-ets, and thanks to Julie there were some great prizes. The big prize of the night was
the free service from
Shaw’s, that was won by Harri Harri-son, who promptly asked for it to be auctioned with proceeds going to the Chapter charity. When I asked why, he said, “Because of living in Birmingham, I don’t get to many meetings and don’t get to take part in the raf-fles, so this is my way of giving some-thing back.”
We had
the wonderful sounds of DJ Peter Philips to dance to, and we danced
like there was no tomorrow. Peter told me he loves playing for
1066. He thinks we are great people and so much fun. OK,
no swollen heads please. At the end of the night we
were treated to the sight of Koop trying to teach K-Dog how to
dance to ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘The ‘Macarena’. Who said bik-ers didn't have a feminine side?
In the room waiting for us was "The house Party Survival Kit " it contained some inter-esting items!! I could un-derstand the Res-
cue remedy and the Rennies(I was
grateful for a couple of them during the night) but I can't help won-
dering exactly what sort of games Clare
thought
we
were going to get up to in our rooms with chocolate eggs, clothes
pegs and cocktail
sticks. the mind boggles. I did hear a few sug-gestions for the pegs but Hogtog said I had to keep it clean. Only Clare knows the answer.
After what felt like five minutes sleep, it was breakfast time. I’m pleased to report I wasn't the only one feeling delicate, as most of us looked a bit rough around the edges - this made me feel so much better about my- self. Still, after - yet again - excel-lent food and ser-vice, people livened up. I can safely say that everyone had a brilliant time. Clare put hours of work in for our benefit and we reaped the bene-fits.
I'm going finish this with something Harri Harrison
said to me, because it sums up 1066 to a T. When asked
if he’d looked for a Chapter nearer him, he said, “Yes, but
NOTHING can live up to 1066."
Catch you all soon.

Newcomers’ Ride
Road Captain: Skelly
I would love to say the day broke with the sun shining and the birds singing, but it
didn’t. The sky was overcast and the birds were huddled together in a corner somewhere for warmth. A far cry from my first Newcomers’ Rides at 16 dur-ing the long hot summer of ’76, with a ragtag bunch of mates on assorted mopeds, where the only instruction was that a chin on the tank and bum on the pillion seat could see a dramatic increase in speed.
A progression of 400/4s, Bonnevilles, Beemers and Ducatis, with a Blackbird thrown in for good measure, finally saw me turn to Harley three years ago with a brand new Fatboy from Shaw Harley-Davidson.
I loved it, but it was very shiny and I didn’t need to com-mute on it, so it stayed mostly in the garage, with just oc-casional trips out. It can by now find its own way to almost every coffee shack in Sussex, Surrey and Kent when the sun is shining. My idea of a winter fix was to watch Wild Hogs (yet again).
But circumstances change and I love that feeling of family that Harley engenders. I get quite upset when another Harley rider fails to wave back. So I decided to join 1066 and actually use the bike.
Several layers of clothing later, and a 50 minute ride from Worthing through a cloud base that managed to cover the A27 on the Downs at Brigh- ton, and I pulled into the car park at Shaw’s wondering what to ex-pect.
I spotted a few orange fluorescent jackets by the Munch Box and strolled over. After the embarrass- ment of a couple of fumbled double handshakes, I spotted what every-one else was doing and soon got the hang of it. As more road crew arrived it was obvious this wasn’t just a group of people who happened to have bought the same make. It was a genuine group of friends, bearded bikers, giving out handshakes as well as hugs and kisses (mainly, but not entirely), to the ladies present.
Then a hand clapped my back, a double hand-shake, and Steve was asking if I had signed
up for the mileage challenge. A mum-bled response, and before I knew
it, we were standing by the bike checking details
such as the VIN num-ber ready for the start of
the Challenge. In three years, I had only managed
just under 2,500 miles. Hmmm, embarrassment back,
but only momentarily as Steve happily pointed out that H.O.G.
give badges for 1,000 and 5,000 miles in the season.
There were two newbies and a whole host of road marshals and captains, so feeling a bit apprehensive, we went with Skelly for our briefing. It made sense, but would I be able to find neutral in time to raise my left hand? Would I stall as I tried to pull out in front of the back markers?
The weather had dried up, as had the roads in part, and pretty soon we were lining up to leave Shaw’s with the two newbies at the back to ex-perience the drop-off before we had our turn. It was fantastic. As we pulled away, the feeling of Sunday runs to Boxhill on mopeds which I had as a kid, came flooding back. Within minutes there was an idiot grin on my face.
The drop-offs made sense and certainly gave a feeling of security. The pace was also a relief; too many times when out with a group, they have turned into a race, with everything pushed to the limit. Not today though, just rolling the bike through the bends, and listening to the wonderful sound of so many Harleys as throttles were opened on straight stretches, was magnifi- cent. I am sure as we en- tered Uckfield, I could hear Danny Bowes singing ‘I hear the sound of distant thunder’. I confess, I love the looks that kids (small and big) give as I ride past on my Harley, but it is a real spectacle as so many ride through a town. The idiot grin was back and I half-wished for one of the Glide rid-ers to blast out a suitable rock anthem.
All too soon the ride was over. Yes I managed my drop off; no I didn’t stall, and hopefully I have now found a group of new mates to ride with.
What did I learn? Harleys are fun in the wet as well as the sunshine; 1066 are a very welcoming bunch; if I convert to an open-face helmet, I will definitely be getting flies in my teeth on H.O.G. runs. And Steve, - I’m going for the 5,000.

C lare had an idea. And when Clare has an idea, you never know what is going to happen! Thinking
about the Lille visitors, she quite rightly thought it a tad embarrassing that so many of them spoke English, compared with the rather meagre grasp of French held by 1066 Chapter members. Knowing that I used to be a French teacher, she de-cided it would be a great idea if I were to offer French lessons (no, really! I do mean lessons in French) to any Chapter members who cared to learn. And so, messieurs dames, it came about that one Sat-urday morning in mid-February, about a dozen Chapter members gathered at the Six Bells, eager to become fluent French-speakers in time for the visit of our Lille Chapter friends in June. Well, it didn’t quite work out that way, but I have to say that after four pretty intensive sessions, the group has gained a fair old smattering of welcoming phrases. Their dedication has impressed me, and I do hope it will impress our visitors! We have now got plenty of time in which to forget eve-rything we learned, but it is the intention to have a cou-ple of revision sessions towards the end of May. So if you missed out the first time round, and would like to join us, do get in touch with me on [email protected] and I will add you to the mailing list. A bientôt tout le monde!

“Good Moaning!”
I n the immortal words of that famous linguist, Del Boy,"Ah mange tout, mange tout!”
Del Boy didn't have Anne though! Thanks to her hard work and patience I may be able to talk about more than little green vegetables to our friends from Lille.
Over the last few weeks, a group of us has been meet-ing at the Six Bells in Chiddingly to brush up our (in my case, schoolgirl) French, and now feel confident we will do 1066 Chapter proud in welcoming the Lille Chapter to England.
A huge merci beaucoup to Anne for giving up her Sat-urday mornings for us. It has been really useful and very enjoyable; and for me, a lovely way to get to know some of our members better.

B eing a new bike rider, 8 years to-date, my first ‘proper’ bike was my beloved 2003 100
th Anniversary
Edition ‘V’-Rod.
I have always loved this bike and never really thought I would change – how very wrong can one be...? The 2003 ‘V’-Rod was a great bike for me, but not so great for touring or pillions and, as one does, I was just
looking through the web at other Harleys and up pops ‘Avatar’.
I hadn’t seen the film, known of its existence, or anything about it, but the bike looked awesome.
Numerous phone calls and e-mails later and, hey presto, the Ultra Classic was on my drive.
The previous owner had put a lot of chrome on the bike and commissioned Sam Hubbard, Assistant Director of Birmingham Chapter, to ‘Avatar’ the bike.
Not long after the work was completed, the owner’s other half wanted to have their own Harley rather than be a pil-lion and they sold it for 2 Harleys.......
I think this bike is great to look at, lovely to ride and ideal for pillions – probably good for touring as well. I look for-ward to seeing you on the ride-outs and the ‘eyes’ will be looking at you!!

Ladies of Harley do
Bingo & Brown
O nly Clare, our fantastic Events Officer, could take what
passes for entertainment on a wet afternoon in the East Hoathly Home for the Bewildered, re-name it “Bingo and Brown”, and turn it into a side-splittingly fun evening for Ladies of Harley.
The evening began with eyes down for a few games of bingo – quite an education if you’ve never done this be-fore. Maz was obvi-ously an old hand at
this, and so with her elec-tronic number display, and our bingo dobbers, introduced us to the world of two fat ducks, Skelly’s eye, four corners, single line and full house.
The “Brown” bit was not, as some
may have imagined, brown ale, but some DVDs of Mrs Brown. Amaz-ingly, some of the la-dies had not been intro-
duced to the delights
of Mrs Brown and her boys,
while one or two oth-ers had not previously found her humour to their liking. However, by the end of the eve-ning, we were all ach-ing with the laughing, and I think Amazon may well see a flurry of orders from the 1066 area for DVDs of
Mrs Brown.
After
an excellent supper of
baked potato with various
fillings and salad, the bingo and Brown continued. Verne Heath should loan herself out to accompany people buying their lottery tickets, as the number of her wins became almost embarrass-ing for her. However, she was lucky not to win the prize of a pair of Mrs Brown’s bloomers
or Granddad’s long johns, as the winners of those items had to model them and, sadly, there may be pho-tos as a permanent reminder. Luck-ily, the winner of Mrs Brown’s wax-ing kit was not required to demon-strate, as there was no convenient under-the-stairs cupboard.
Many thanks to Clare for organising yet another excellent evening and to those who helped her. What stars!
