Barry Garten, Director

This past month our Assistant Di-rector did an out-standing job plan-ning and organiz-ing the Chapter Picnic at Douthat State Park. Mark couldn’t have picked a more beautiful day. Rick, Groundhog and Terry did a great job leading individual group riders through parts of Roanoke and Craig Counties ending up in Alleghany County. The food was great and as far as I could tell no one went home hungry. There was corn hole and horse shoes for entertainment and the real big surprise was young bear who made his presence known in the middle of the day. I hope everyone has had a chance to thank Mark for planning Chapter Picnic and Rick, Groundhog & Terry for leading a great ride and everyone having a great time. Another person whose efforts stand out is someone who planned and organized enter-tainment all year and that person is Bo Brown. Bo thank you for what you do, I would been there on July 20th but that is Barb & my anni-versary so I promise to be bowling the next time. Finally, I want to say a few words about every-one who volunteers in support the Chapter. I know first-hand how important volunteers are to an organization I live it every day. If it were not for the tens of thousands of volunteer hours each year the Mount Rogers NRA would be unable to provide the services the public demands. Without volunteers our Chapter could not exist so for everyone who volunteers their time we all owe you our deepest grati-tude. Thank you all for what you do!

From the Director: Assistant Director: Mark Anderson, Assistant Director

Well hello again! Seems like l just wrote one of these last week, but l guess that was for July and this is August. I guess that means that the year is real-ly starting to fly by, but there are still several good months for riding. Starting this month is a ride l wish Kathy and l could have cleared our schedule for, and that’s Owen Vogt’s ride to Elkins WV. For those of you that are going it should be a great time. Owen from me thanks for setting that all up for the group. The Member Appreciation Picnic at Douthat State Park from the comments l heard was a success, l was worried that the 90+ degree temps would make it very uncomfortable but with a little breeze and a lot of shade it turned out great. Thank you all for coming and for all you do for our chapter. I had worried a little about getting all the food set up and then we might have a big black Bear smell the food, come in and help himself. That didn’t happen quite like that, he came after we had eaten, l didn’t see him but many did and l don’t think he was too big. Still looking for members that want to join the team for the new decade 2020. A few have said they would like to stay on for the upcoming year. I want to thank Marian McConnell for continuing to do the Newsletter, Blake & Virginia Dingler continuing to fix our meals, Bo Brown for continuing to plan our activities, and Harry Freedy for continuing to take care of new memberships. Now is not the time to be bashful, let’s be thinking about nominations for the positions of Assistant Director, Treasurer and Secretary. Last but not least let’s not forget about the Rider training programs that we have available to us, take one and get registered for the drawing at the end of the season.

Historian: RVHOG History

Tom Owen, Historian

The August 1992 News-letter did not mention the extreme heat that we have been experiencing so we hope it was not quite as hot for them as it is now. Maybe we should start noting temperature extremes in the newsletter so future generations can appreciate our riding conditions. The picnics that had been held at Bruce Nobles’ and Moon Mullins’ were a big success. The night ride we have mentioned before was also a success and was now to be a regular monthly ride weather permitting. The night rides would leave Hardees on Orange Ave at 8:30 PM. You may remember that the first night ride had a total of 32 bikes go on the ride. Definitely a good turnout. Also remember the discussion held about reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at meetings that we dis-cussed recently? A vote would be held at the Sep-tember member to decide if reciting the Pledge of Allegiance would continue.

Information was already out on next year’s state rally which would held on July 23-25 1993 in Wil-liamsburg Va. Upcoming rides were to the West Virginia State Fair and a ride to Claytor Lake on August 15 which would start at East Main St. at the Amoco in Salem. The newsletter stated that the girls and guys would be taking different routes to the lake and would be meeting at the swimming area. On August 29th. you could take your pick of riding to Waynesboro Harley Davidson or Blue Ridge Cycle in Christiansburg. They were both having events to benefit MDA. Finally a couple of items listed for sale in the news-letter you probably have not thought about for a while. The first, listed as " teach your wife to ride" , was a 1985 Honda Rebel 250cc being sold by Ken Clark for $900 with only 3000 miles on it. The sec-ond was a set of Harley collector cards, series II, being sold by Leon Hopkins. The treasury continued to go in the wrong direction with a balance of $759.71. With that, I am history!

It's already the time of year to nominate an Assistant Director, Secretary and Treasurer. Think of who you want to nominate for 2020. Nominations for office will be taken at the August Chapter meeting and will be open for one week at the Dealership. Mem-bers may cast their vote at the October Chapter meeting by dropping their ballot into ballot box located in HOG Hall….ballots will be accepted at the October 1, 2019 Chapter meeting and will remain open until Saturday, October 5, 2019, to allow those Chapter members not able to attend the Chapter meeting to vote by contacting the Director by phone/ e-mail/text. Election results will be announced at the November Chapter meeting and printed in the December issue of the Chapter newsletter. Also a reminder that renewal forms won't be mailed out until December as they need to be signed and dated for the new year. They will be mailed closer to the end of December for January 2020.

Safety Officer: Dave “Groundhog” Courey, Safety Officer QUICK TIPS: MSF’s Guide to Group Riding Motorcycling can be a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group – whether with friends on a Sun-day morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally – is the epitome of the motorcycling experi-ence. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride: Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals. Assign a lead and sweep rider. Both should be experi-enced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should be aware of each rider's skill level before the ride and monitor the rid-ers during the ride. At least one rider in each group should carry a first-aid kit and full tool kit, and all riders should carry a cell phone, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles

so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. A single-file for-mation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed Periodically check the riders following using your rear view mirrors. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pres-sure to ride too fast to catch up. If you’re separated from the group, don’t pan-ic. Your group should have a pre-planned proce-dure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation war-rants. If a rider leaves during the ride, the rest of the group should re-form the staggered formation by criss-crossing into the next vacant position. Although it would seem more efficient for the column directly behind the missing rider to move up, we do not rec-ommend it because passing another rider within a lane can be risky. Be careful out there now, ya hear?

ERNIE LITTLEFIELD’S CRUISE IN BENEFIT

Ernie’s West End Cruise In, hosted by the West End Cruisers, was a big success. It was on a very hot and humid July 20th, and with RV-HOG members’ help (28 bikes!) raised $2,516 to benefit the Kiwanis Club “Centennial Playground Project”. There were great cars (and bikes, of course) to admire, food, fun, and (thank good-ness for) air conditioning inside Ernie’s amazing “man cave.”
