When something old com-bines successfully withsomething new, as in the
case of Asian Mix, the outcome isfresh and exciting. This brand neweatery is adding spice to theSafeway building on the corner ofPiikoi and Beretania streets, whileserving Japanese, Chinese andlocal recipes that have stood thetest of time.
Owner Daniel Leung and histeam of nine chefs bring more than
30 years of experience in the indus-try to their latest endeavor. Suchknowledge and skill has resulted inquick, affordable meals that main-tain their quality and freshness.
Since opening May 8, the cozylocal spot has garnered attentionfor its satisfying Japanese bentosand mixed plates, but Leung saysthere’s a whole menu of exception-al Chinese-inspired a la carte itemsto choose from as well. “One of ourstrongest points is actually our a lacarte items,” he says.
Shrimp with Chili Sauce($10.95) is one the friendly ownerrecommends right off the bat. Thisvelvety dish gets its hint of spicefrom a chili sauce that marries wellwith the slightly sweet tomatosauce that lusciously coats theshrimp. According to Leung, it’sgreat for takeout orders because itwill keep fresh for hours.
While you’re at it, try the a lacarte menu’s Kung Pao Chicken($7.95), which offers a spicy com-bination of chicken, bell peppers, dried chili pepper and peanutstossed in a flavorful, yet lightsauce. “We have a really good
house sauce,” explains Leung.“Every time you come in, you’regoing to have the same taste.” Boththe Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimpwith Chili Sauce have been in theowner’s repertoire for 20 years.
After sampling such freshChinese fare, you’ll want to share itat your next gathering. No prob-lem, since all of the restaurant’s ala carte items are available in partytray sizes for catering. You canshare the Regular ($22) tray among12 people or more, while the Large($32) is good for at least 20.
Before you go, be sure to trysome of Asian Mix’s Japanese andlocal fare as well. MisoyakiButterfish ($8.95) — the best-sell-ing bento — is based on a recipethat manager/chef Douglas Shiraihas been cooking up since 1984.“We filet it — we cut our own por-tions, and the miso sauce … is kindof a secret,” he says with a chuckle.Nothing accompanies the melt-in-your-mouth bento better than a sideof creamy Macaroni Potato Salad($1.75), made fresh daily.
So get into the mix for a freshburst of familiar flavors.

Stop by Dean’s Drive Innduring lunch, and you’llmost likely see a line going
out the door, which is a goodindication of what you canexpect at this popular Kaneoheeatery. And don’t worry, the linemoves fast, and the food is oh, soworth waiting for.
As a Windward residentmyself, I’ve been a fan fromwhen it first opened six yearsago. The tasty, local-style, gour-met plate lunches are recipes ofchef/owner Dean Mishima, whohas three decades of experiencein the restaurant business. Bornand raised in Kaneohe, Mishimagrew up eating a lot of the foodhe serves today.
It was always his dream to starthis own restaurant, so after 19years as executive chef for LibertyHouse, he decided to pursue it.(Now that I think about it, as a kidmy mom often took us to eat at theoriginal Gazebo at Liberty Housein Ala Moana Center and I remem-ber the food being really good.)
At Dean’s, Ahi Cakes ($9.45mini and $11.45 regular) andTeriyaki Beef Steak ($9.45 miniand $11.45 regular) are the mostpopular menu items. There also
is a combo of the two called Surf& Turf ($11.95). The ahi cake issurprisingly moist, and consistsof round onion, green onion, water chestnut and egg, and isdrizzled with a sweet aioli sauce. The teriyaki beef steak is nicelymarinated in a homemade terisauce, and then charbroiled, cutup into thick pieces and toppedwith a teri glaze. All regularplates include white or brownrice, and a choice of soup, tossedsalad or macaroni salad.
There also areburgers, sand-wiches, a vegetari-an menu, and dailyspecials often with avariety of fresh island fishdishes such as shutome, ono andahi belly. When you order, bewareof the display of cornbread anddesserts on the counter that are toohard to resist. Add a friendly staffto the mix, including Mishima’swife Doreen at the register, andyou’ll definitely be hooked.
From experience, it’s good tocall beforehand to make surethey’re open as the restaurantwill sometimes close for cateringevents. And if you can wait, stepin after 1:30 p.m. to skip out onthe lunch rush.

In Vietnam, many people enjoy abowl of pho for breakfast, slurp-ing the warm, satisfying soup
before beginning their day.Of course, pho is delicious any
time of day — lunchtime, dinner-time or even as an evening snack. But the one thing that may makenon-meat eaters hoof it right past apho shop is that it is typically madewith beef broth, so unless theeatery is willing to accommodate, you’re out of luck.
Enter Saigon Cuisine.“We want everybody to eat what
they like,” says Jennifer Tran, whoowns the restaurant with husbandTaylor. And when it comes to pho, customers have three options: beef, chicken or vegetable broth. “Justask for vegetarian only,” she adds.
And that’s no bum steer.Vegetable Pho ($6.95 medium,$7.50 large) is filled to the brimwith tofu, cabbage, carrots, cauli-flower, broccoli, white and greenonions all swimming in a healthyvegetable broth. “There’s no meatat all,” assures Tran, who also rec-ommends Saigon Cuisine’sLemongrass Tofu Vermicelli($7.50). The dish is comprised ofdry vermicelli along with tofu mar-inated in fragrant lemongrass andturnip, lending it an appetizing yel-low hue and mellow flavor. “It’s adelicious taste for vegetarians,”
Tran says. The tofu and noodlesare accompanied by lettuce, beansprouts and cucumber, along witha shoyu-based sauce.
So don’t follow the herd.Vegetarians may have to do someinvestigating (with a little helpfrom Dining Out) and make them-selves clear when ordering, but it’sworth it when you can just pho-getaboutit and enjoy your meal.

Who or what inspires you as achef/manager/owner?My inspiration comes from myparents. My father started up thebusiness and worked very hard tobuild the reputation of the bakeryand every baked item that left ourdoors. Till this day, my 80-year-old mother, Irene Yafuso, stillcomes to the bakery every morn-ing and helps us bake. Her dedi-cation and love for the bakery alsoinspires me to continue the legacythat she and my dad built.
What is your favorite dish on themenu? Why?My favorite pastry is hands downthe Butterhorn Danish (warmed upwith extra butter)! It’s super ono,but also very nostalgic for me.From kindergarten through mysenior year in high school, mymom used to prepare a Danish anda glass of orange juice for meevery morning before school.

Shiro’s Saimin Haven has givenwhat used to be a simple noodledish personality. Franz “Shiro”Matsuo or Mistah Saimin, who
died recently at age 93,glamorized saimin, mak-
ing it artful and person-alized. Shiro’s Saiminis consistent in its useof ingredients, mak-ing sure freshness iskey. Even withdozens of affordableand unique saiminoptions on the menu,
Shiro’s chefs reach outto customize various
dishes outside of saimin.Chef Warlie’s latest cre-
ation is Pineapple BraisedPork Belly. Priced at $8.80, it
comes with two scoops of rice and veg-etables.
“A lot of places have an Okinawan
pork. This is our version with aHawaiian twist with the pineapplebraise,” says Bryce Fujimoto, managerand grandson of Shiro Matsuo.
Shiro’s Saimin was built from theground up by Mistah Saimin whoalways had a desire to work for him-self. Although Shiro may be gone, hisdelightful and comical personality canbe seen throughout all three restau-rants (Waipahu, Waimalu and EwaBeach), from his poems on the walls tohis quirky messages within the menu. One warming poem Shiro created forhis guests reads, “The place with asong in its heart and dedicated to theproposition that the hard working peo-ple must be taken care of with invigor-ating, nourishing, soulsifying foodthat is not too skimpy, plenty tasty andgeared to the pocketbook.”
Well said, Mistah Saimin!

This week is a big week forInternational House Of PancakesRestaurant, which has four loca-
tions on Oahu — Pearl City, Kaneohe andtwo in Waikiki — and one on the BigIsland. Not only has the restaurant’sKuhio location recently reopened withdelightful new décor, but all of the loca-tions also are rolling out some menuchanges starting tomorrow.
But not to worry, pancake lovers. Thatcertainly doesn’t pose any risk to IHOP’salready incredibly varied and vastmenu that includes everything fromclassic, breakfast foods to hearty din-ners and decadent desserts. Rather, thenew menu simply makes one crucialchange that all customers are certainlygoing to love, no matter what kind offood you’re after: Prices are gettinglower. Yes, you did read that correctly.
“The menu stays the same, but theprices drop significantly,” says directorof operations Jason Aldaba.
A bold move in any economy — letalone this one — IHOP’s decision tolower its prices stems from a love for itscustomers.
“We just thought that a lot of people arelooking for value, and there is a lot ofchoices when dining out. So we looked atour menu pricing and decided that it’s timefor a change, so we lowered a lot of ourprices throughout the menu,” Aldaba says.
“We have a variety of everything. IHOPis a national staple when it comes tobreakfast,” Aldaba says. “But we offerway more other than breakfast …Anything you like would be on our menu.”
Some popular menu items include
Spinach and Mushroom Omelette($14.99) and Big Steak Omelette ($15.59),which includes tender strips of steak, hashbrowns, green peppers, onions, mush-rooms, tomatoes and Cheddar cheese withsalsa. Another customer favorite isChicken and Waffles ($8).
And if you’re going to IHOP, trying thepancakes are a necessity. Aldaba says thata popular option is Pick-A-PancakeCombo ($11.75), which gives you achoice among a wide array
of IHOP’s tasty pancakes, includingOriginal Buttermilk, Chocolate ChocolateChip and Double Blueberry.
If you’re looking for something otherthan breakfast food, IHOP has that cov-ered as well. One tasty option for lunch ordinner is Tuscan Chicken Griller
($11.99), which features grilled chickenwith melted Provolone cheese, oven-roasted tomatoes, lettuce and sun-driedtomato pesto.
Also coming up this week, in honorof Fourth of July, IHOP is offering aspecial Red, White and Blue Ultimate
Combo ($9.99), which includes hashbrowns, two eggs, two pieces of meat andtwo pancakes that are topped with straw-berries, whipped cream and blueberries.
“Normally every year we do the Red,White and Blue Ultimate Combo just forFourth of July to show our appreciation,”says Aldaba. And the combo — as well asany of IHOP’s other menu items — cer-tainly is something that the customers willappreciate.

The IHOP restaurants that you find here inthe Islands are a part of a larger chain thatfirst started in California more than 50
years ago. Local owners Sarah and Vince Espino brought IHOP to Hawaiiin 2006, when they opened the Kuhio location. With its wide variety ofbreakfast foods — including its famous, fluffy buttermilk pancakes —along with sandwiches, soups and more, IHOP’s popularity soon caughton. The owners expanded their restaurant to include five locationsthroughout the state.
Although IHOP is derived from a larger international chain, it featuresa lot of local flavors, too. IHOP strives to buy local as much as possible, and often uses local eggs and produce in its dishes.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the Kuhio location unveiled its renova-tions — brand new décor in the dining room. “The décor and everythingin the restaurant is different,” says director of operations Jason Aldaba.“The paint, the chairs, the carpet are all new.”
Customers will feel at ease in the comfortable, homelike dining expe-rience that IHOP has created. And starting July 9, there is a new reasonto bring your entire family to IHOP. Beginning that day, IHOP will kick offits Kids Eat Free promotion. “That will be in the afternoons,” Aldabaexplains, “but we might extend it as we move forward.”

Change is greeted atSekiya’s like processedcheese in Paris, and that’s
just the way its customers like it.Since 1935, generations of dinershave stopped by the Kaimukilandmark to dine on okazu, sushi, plate lunches and good oldAmerican hot dogs and ham-burgers. Manager Mary Kaui, who has been greeting customersfor 14 years, has seen parentsturn into grandparents and keikiinto parents of their own.
“I love the customers here. They know your name. Theyare really more like family thenjust customers,” she says.
Popular appetizers at Sekiya’s
are as different as the eclecticmix of customers who regularlycome from as far away asKaneohe and Waianae. CornedBeef Hash (95 cents per piece) isa traditional tasty hash that istempura fried.
Inari Sushi ($1.35), with moistvinegar rice, carrots and stringbeans, is a nice way to beginyour meal or to take with you tobe enjoyed later. Takeout is a bigdeal here. The Okazu deli boastssome 25 items, but as with allthings on the seven-page menu, customers have their favoritesfrom which they rarely vary. Infact, as we were chatting, a cus-tomer came, ordered and left
within a minute. It’s not that sur-prising, says Kaui.
“He comes in every day at thesame time and orders the samething. He doesn’t even have totell us what he wants. We get alot of people like that.”
Another option, whether gettingit on the go or dining with yourfriends and neighbors, is MakiSushi ($3.95), which is bigenough to be cut into eight heartyportions, or the Standard Bento($7.25). The bento is a tummy-sat-isfying mix of maki sushi, chowmein noodles, shoyu chicken, bar-becue beef, a hot dog, namasu andtsukemono.
Oh, and everything on themenu is made fresh just likegrandma would. It has to bebecause tutu has been eatinghere for years and wouldn’tstand for anything else.

Dear Hearts,In life people make mistakes.Nobody is perfect. How you deal or react to your foul ups is the key. If you own up to them, You are able to learn, adapt and grow as a person. Deny, make excuses or point fingers and you will remain the same.Don’t make yourself the victim or play the blame game. It’s so lame.

O n Feb. 3, Adega PortuguesaRestaurant & Bar —cele-brating both Portuguese
and Brazilian cuisine — opened itsdoors in the heart of Chinatown. Now, about six months later, theeatery is commemorating its half-year anniversary with a specialpromotion.
“On July 6 — the first Friday ofthe month — we’re going to giveaway 6,000 malasadas from 6 a.m.to 6 p.m.,” says restaurant ownerTrigo da Silva.
When da Silva first came to Oahu in2007, he noticed that there were fewPortuguese restaurants on the island. After meeting local Portuguese —who were just as enthusiastic abouttheir culture and heritage as he was —da Silva decided to open AdegaPortuguesa, in order to share thePortuguese culture with Hawaii.
“We’re just trying to show every-body our culture — our food, musicand dance,” he says.
Adega Portuguesa prides itself inproviding customers with authenticPortuguese cuisine bursting with flavor. Some of the eatery’s most popular dish-es include Arroz De Marisco ($17) — aseafood medley pan-simmered withpeppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, whitewine and rice — and Vinho D’alhos($19), pork loin marinated in vinegar-garlic sauce and served with fried pota-toes and sautéed mixed vegetables.Other restaurant specialties includeCarne de Porco Adega ($18) — a tradi-tional Portuguese dish comprising porkand clams with fried potatoes, cilantroand meat sauce — Caldo Verde ($5), or
Portuguese national soup composed ofpotatoes, onions, kale and chouriçosausage, as well as the traditionalPortuguese Bean Soup ($6).
Da Silva notes that the eatery isespecially popular for its Bacalhau(codfish).
“We have several varieties ofBacalhau dishes; one of the most pop-ular is our Bacalhau à Adega ($22) —a boneless fillet of codfish topped withonions, red peppers and garlic, and
served with roasted red potatoes andsautéed mixed vegetables,” he says.“We also have Bacalhau à Braz ($22),a Northern Portuguese dish consistingof codfish, crispy potato strips, scram-bled eggs, garlic onions and parsley.Another customer favorite is Bitoque($19), locally known as the LocoMoco, but we make it authentic with atraditional, Portuguese-style NewYork Strip steak (Angus), topped withbrown gravy and a fried egg.”
Adega’s Happy Hour Specials areavailable daily from 3 to 6 p.m.Available pupus include PortugueseSalsicha ($8), or Portuguese sausage;Popcorn Shrimp ($6); Chicharróns($4), or fried pork rinds; andPicadinho Vinho D’alhos ($8). Beerand other drinks are available for $3-$4.
Besides the Happy Hour Specials,da Silva points out that customers canpresent the restaurant’s coupon inDining Out to receive additional dis-counts. Customers can receive 15 per-cent off any menu entrée (couponmust be present), and seniors (ages 65and over) can receive a 15 percent dis-count on the entire menu.
The authentic Portuguese food isonly one component of the eatery. DaSilva teaches a Portuguese languageclass at the eatery every Monday from6 to 8 p.m. for those who want to learnto speak Portuguese. Live Portuguesemusic is performed during weekendsand dance classes are held onSundays. Live music includes Fado,Boso Nova, Samba and jazz.
“Once a month, I have Fado singerscome from the Mainland (to performhere),” notes da Silva. He encouragescustomers to “friend” AdegaPortuguesa on the eatery’s Facebookpage, in order to get updates regardinglive music and other restaurant news.
Adega Portuguesa is the busiestduring the weekends, da Silva says, and he emphasizes the need to makereservations.
“If you want to have dinner (here)on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, youmust call for reservations,” he states.
