Dragons

The dragons scales are as rough as the rocks on the moon.

A dragons spikes is like the point of a sword.

The dragons nostrils make smoke like a bee smoker.

The wings on a dragon feels like sandpaper.

The dragons teeth are so strong that it could chop a giant piece of wood.

On Saturday the Edendale Rippa Rugby team played as a cur-tain raiser at Eden Park. They competed in a World Rippa Rugby Tournament to celebrate ‘One Year To Go’ for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Edendale was representing Russia and we played against Marist Herne Bay which was Ireland. They boys played really well and as a team, we won the match 3 tries to 1. Well done boys, it was a memorable experience especially seeing yourself playing on the large screen at Eden Park. The team as follows: Matthew, Andre, David, Jonathan, Ayrton, Devron, Leroy, Max, Trevino, Otto, Rohit and Faith.

PM Levels / Running Records Students who are reading at PM Levels 1-21 (reading age 5-7.5 years) are assessed using a number of assessment tools includ-ing alphabet and basic sight word checks, running records and overall teacher judgments. The PM Benchmark Reading Assess-ment Kit is a tool used to take running records. Running records are used to assess individual student’s reading behaviours (Levels 1-12 every three weeks, Levels 12-21 twice a term). Running records enable teachers to score, and analyze a stu-dent's reading behaviors and comprehension. They provide evidence of what a student knows about: letter, sound, and word recognition and sentence structure (decoding); their use of skills and strategies to gain understanding of a text and their ability to retell the text in detail (comprehension). Comprehen-sion questions assess a student’s ability to recall specific infor-mation, to make connections between prior knowledge and the text, to explain, expand and justify ideas and to make infer-ences from the text. Running records help teachers assess a student's reading level and the development of independent reading strategies. Run-ning records provide teachers with information about the learn-ing needs of the reader so that informed decisions can be made about students’ progress and next steps for learning. A decod-ing score of 95-100% and comprehension levels of at least 80% indicate a student is ready to progress to the next reading level.

PROBE assessments Students who are reading at 7 years and higher are assessed using a variety of reading assessments. One of these is PROBE (Prose Reading Observation, Behaviour and Evaluation of Com-prehension). This assessment is done on an individual student basis with teachers at least once a term. Students are given text passages (fiction and/or non-fiction) to read aloud which are followed up by a range of questions. The reading aloud is commonly referred to as decoding and allows teachers to observe student reading behaviour in areas such as self-corrections, hesitations, insertions, omissions, ex-pression and fluency. The questions involve testing of student comprehension in literal (information stated in text), reorgani-sation (reconstructing information in text), vocabulary (determining the meaning of words or phrases that are used in the text), evaluation (using inference skills) and reaction (providing an opinion based on information in text). PROBE assessment results stated in reports are based on a reading age range in which students are reading instructionally. The comprehension percentage is the most significant criteria by which student instructional levels are determined. Decoding at 90-95% and comprehension should be at least 75-80% before students are considered for promotion to the next reading age level. PROBE is a tool that can be used for assessing reading ages to 15 years.

Upcoming event Term Four: Years 4-6 production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Watch out for one of the main events in Term Four. Years 4-6 have been working hard

in getting ‘The Wizard of Oz’ production underway. This is a play for all students and

families to see. There have been many students practising their lines, making props and

backdrops, learning their songs and discussing their ideas about the storyline. Tickets

and T-shirts will be available to buy at the start of Term Four. Each family will be

given an order form in Week One.

No photos or filming of any sort to be taken during the performances except for school

-approved personnel. This is for the benefit of audience members and students performing to ensure that there are no

unnecessary distractions. All audience members will need to be seated during the performances and there will only be a

limited number of tickets sold for each performance. Performances will be held on 9-11 November. The first perform-

ance will be a matinee and the other two will be in the evening. More details will be given at the start of Term Four.

What are PM levels, Running Records and PROBE assessments?

The Koru team went on a trip. We went to the bush walk. I saw some really cool

leaves. One looked like a tiger’s fur. We threw a Pooh stick. We threw it in the

river. The water was very muddy, that’s why it sank.

Then we went to the Honey Centre. He told us about bees and how many trips

they did. It was so hard to remember that I can’t remember it even now. Then we

went right next to a beehive then we went to the beach. My group made a great

castle. We made arched walls. We made five ditches and one trap. We had a lot of

fun but then the teacher said it’s time to go back to school.

On the way back my group got to sit in the front. Do you know why? On the way

there it stank in the back of the bus. When we got back to school the bell had

already gone. Now I have told you my story.
