What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality (AR) brings the real and virtual worlds closer together by adding graphics, sound –
even smells – to what we are experiencing in the physical world.
The intermediary device, owing to it’s portability and functionality, is invariably a “Smart” phone or
Tablet.

…Or maybe ultimately…Glasses?

But what about Education?
Is there a viable, pedagogical way of integrating these technologies into Education?

71% of 16-24 year olds in the UK now own a “Smart” phone (i.e. a device capable of processing
Augmented Reality):

Special Collections using Augmented Reality to Enhance Learning and Teaching (SCARLET):
Imagine a teacher and a group of students huddled around a Dante manuscript or early printed edition
in the Library. The SCARLET project aims to use AR (Augmented Reality) to simultaneously allow
students to experience the magic of original materials, whilst enhancing the learning experience by
‘surrounding’ the object with digitised content; images, texts, online learning resources and information
on related objects held in the Library and elsewhere.

NB: Works through JUNAIO App, available form Apple or Android Store

Landmap-AR Content: http://landmap.ac.uk/
The geospatial AR channel developed in conjunction with Landmap is now live. It allows the user to
visualise this data in a whole new way. Through a highly detailed feature rich map, users can switch
between different map layers and manipulate 3D models to bring the location to life.
Added functionality enables the user to:
• Freeze the tracking to take a snapshot of the layer
• Activate gestures to rotate, scale and move the layer
• Make the layer transparent to see how it fits on the printed base layer
• Displays information about different parts of the interface
To access the channel simply open Junaio and scan the map image or scan the QR code below. Follow
the instructions to uncover the content by holding your device over the satellite image. For maximum
functionality the content is best viewed on a tablet device although smartphones will still display the
models and key correctly. Trigger Image: http://teamscarlet.wordpress.com/2013/03/18/landmap-app-

CARE (Creating Augmented Reality in Education)-City University London
Case 1 – Clinical Skills Laboratory
Clinical skills are an essential component of healthcare education for trainee nurses; simulated practice
is used to orientate students to the clinical environment. This example looks at how relevant resources
can be overlaid over equipment, dummies and key areas within a clinical skills lab.
Case 2 – Public Health Walk/Locality Project
Student nurses are allocated to a placement in East London and it is important that they gain an
appreciation of the culture, history and social composition of the area they are working in. Walking
around an area can help identify health issues. Download the app and the trigger images

South Staffordshire College:
South Staffordshire College grabbed the technology and put it to use across their curriculum. The
bricklaying team at the college produced their own videos which have improved the number of trainees
cutting bricks right first time from around 40% to a staggering 90%. Think what this can save in terms of
cost on this course.

The future of AR in Education…
1- Is there a pedagogic rationale?
Do we let the tail wag the dog?
Remember when Second Life was the Future of Education?!
2- Multiple apps
3- Materials development
At present, development costs are expensive but a shared repository of materials is on Jisc’s radar

AR without Handheld accessories?
Using Kinect as an AR tool (Microsoft XBOX accessory):

Also..Google Glass will apparently use biotic instruction (e.g. “wink” to take a photo) - Look, no hands!
