    scenes. Christmas

is clearly upon us. And each

year it seems to come earlier

and earlier. This year, a New

    York City radio station was

    playing 24/7 Christmas music

    by the end of November.

    Those who shopped in malls

    were hearing the sounds of

    Christmas long before the

    meals were being made for

    Thanksgiving.

    What is Christmas? It

    must mean something more

    than just a consumer free-for-

all that engulfs our culture for

the last month of every year.

But how do we untangle that

which is the core of Christmas

    and that which has been

appended to it (such as Santa

    Claus and reindeer) as the

    years have progressed?

    Obviously, the best place

to turn to is the source.

    Two months ago, my

    youngest son Sam

    needed a new phone

    and our Verizon family plan

    could not accommodate

    another line. I really wanted

to put him on our plan, as we

have no limit on data or talk

time, as were the plans of 5 or

so years ago. Today, the major-

    ity of phone plans, regardless

of carrier, charge for data or

limit you and those that dont

    charge, reduce your speed

    when you exceed a certain

level of data each month. Sam

is 14 which means he, by gen-

eration, is a data hog and an

    unlimited data plan is essen-

tial to his psyche and my wal-

let too! What is a father to do?

Lo and behold, Sprint, introduced an unlimited data

    plan that would not slow

    down upon reaching a set

    usage level. Immediately, we

sped to our local Sprint Kiosk,

    to purchase a new Samsung

    Galaxy S-5 Android phone

    with unlimited data plan.The

phone cost over $600 and the

plan was $60 per month where

    they would finance the phone

with no interest at just $50 per

    month. Sam, remember, is 14

so an insurance plan is critical,

    adding another $11 to the

    monthly bill bringing the total

to just over $100 per month.

    Ok, we walk away with

the best phone on the market,

    unlimited data and a satisfac-

    tion guarantee, not happy, get

    your money back. Well not

exactly, as we found out.Service was fine except, near

    Wayne Hills High School, the

    phone doesnt work very well,

    exactly where Sam happens to

be 5 days a week. Though he

    doesnt use the phone every

day, we decided to give Sprint

    the opportunity to better the

    situation by explaining to

    them our dilemma. After 4

    weeks, we attempted to cancel

    the service, trying to port-

    over the phone to Verizon,

    who has excellent service at

    the high school. Sprint refused

to tell me anything about my

account unless I told them my

    account password or my child-

    hood best friend. I couldnt

    answer their questions, as I

    never supplied the informa-

tion to them since I was never

    asked the questions when we

    initially purchased the phone

and service. They refused tohelp me disconnect the

    phone. I asked for managers,

    supervisors and vice presidents

to speak to, explaining that I

    cannot possibly answer any

questions for which I had not

    previously given information.

I even visited the Sprint loca-

tion in Butler to cancel the

account and get a refund for

the phone. The clerk said I

had to return to Willow Brook

as each were third party retail-

    ers; not corporate owned

stores and they were the only

ones that could help us. I was

furious to say the least as this

    had consumed many hours of

    energy already.

So next I went to the

    Verizon store, after receiving a

    special chip by overnight

mail directly from Verizon cor-porate, to place in the phone

    so Verizon could communicate

with it. You see, up to this

point I was under the impres-

sion that a Samsung Galaxy S-

5 phone could use any service

provider, after all, it is the

    newest phone on the market

and available from a myriad of

retailers as well. Boy was I

    wrong! The Verizon store

    informed me that even with

    the chip installed, the phone

    would not operate properly or

    perhaps at all with Verizon,

    because this was a Sprint

    phone, unique and manufac-

    tured exclusively for them and

cannot be ported over to any-

one. Now, I had to go back to

the kiosk where I found out

    the salesman made-up the

    answers to the security ques-

    tions and password, neglecting

to tell me what they were.

    Further, after speaking with

    the Sprint tech people directly

    from the kiosk, the phone

could not be changed to any

other service provider and Icould not get a refund as I was

over the 14 day window of

    opportunity, even though the

reason for delay was to remedy

    the problem. Earlier, the

Sprint home office told me I

    couldnt port the phone unless

I paid the bill in full, (which

was the balance of the phone

purchase price) so I did, right

on the phone with my AMEX

card. So now, I have a paid for

    Sprint phone that cant be

    changed to Verizon, the

    Sprint service is deactivated

and I am unable to move it to

    Verizon or any other provider.

Sprint offered me $170 for the

phone I just paid $600 for and

Verizon will sell me a new one,

with a 2 year service contract

    commitment for only $290.

    This is my current dilemma;

Im sure there are thousands of

    people in a similar predica-

    ment. Sprint was dishonest

    from the beginning, signing

me up with a promise of satis-

    faction guaranteed, making

up the answers to securityquestions and passwords with-

    out my knowledge, not dis-

    closing that the phone was

unable to be ported to any-

one else, allowing me to can-

cel the service, but not the

    phone and failing to refund

my money stating that I took

too long now to bring it to

    their attention. They were dis-

honest not to reveal that the

    Sprint dealers are independ-

    ent contractors/retailers and

    not actually affiliated with the

    company and other Sprint

    locations have nothing to do

with each other. I feel duped

    and severely disappointed that

    this kiosk independent retailer

will not step-up and rise to the

    occasion and refund my

    money for the phone enabling

me to take my business else-

    where.

I am devoting my finan-cial column space today to let

    my readers know that the

    Sprint Satisfaction Guaran-

teed has a time limit of 14

    days (this was never initially

    discussed) and you should

    think twice before purchasing

    a phone and service from

    them. May my $600 expense,

be a lesson to you and a warn-

ing to them, not to treat the

    people in our community

    unfairly, as a bad reputation

    travels much faster than a

    good one. Basically everyone

needs a cell phone today and

    there are many choices in

    which to secure one. Please

    remember this true story when

    considering which cell compa-

    ny or retailer to use.

    Theres a lot of talk

    about social security

    these days. For many

    of us, social security payments

are a big part of retirement

    planning. Here are answers to

a few basic questions on social

    security.

    Q. When can I start drawing

    benefits?

    A. You can start to draw your

    standard benefit when you

    reach your full retirement age.

Thats at age 65 if you were

    born before 1938. Full retire-

    ment age increases progres-

sively to age 67 if you were

born in later years. But you

    can choose to receive a

    reduced benefit any time after

you reach age 62. The earlier

you start, the bigger the reduc-

tion. Or you can increase the

    size of your monthly payment

    by delaying drawing benefits

    beyond your retirement age.

    Q. Will my benefits be taxed?

    A. Whether youll have to pay

income tax on the social secu-

    rity benefits you receive

    depends on your other

    income. If your provisional

    income exceeds certain

thresholds, up to 50% of your

    social security benefits could

be subject to tax. This can go

up to 85% at higher income

levels. Generally, provisionalincome is your total income

    from all sources, including

    tax-exempt interest, plus one-

    half of your social security

    benefits.

    Q. What happens if I keep

    working while receiv ing

    social security?

    A. If youve reached full

    retirement age, you can keep

    working without reducing

    your benefits. But if youre

    drawing benefits in the years

    before full retirement age and

    still working, your benefits

    could be reduced. Generally,

youll lose $1 in benefits for

every $2 you earn above a cer-

    tain amount ($15,480 in

    2014). Different rules apply in

    the year you actually reach

your retirement age. In a few

    cases, continuing to work

    while youre drawing benefits

    can actually increase your

    later benefits.

    Q. How do I decide when to

    begin drawing benefits?

    A. Deciding when to start

    drawing benefits and when to

stop working is a very personal

    decision, but its critical for

    your retirement planning. We

    can supply the numbers and

explain the tax issues to help

It took me awhile to figure

    out that the new and

    improved Joe wasnt a

    winning persona. When I was

    around 23, I was a hotshot

    staff accountant at the Witco

    Chemical Corporation. My

aura at the time was that my

    poop didnt stink. Other peo-

    ples might have, but not

    mine.

    I decided to venture out

and look for a new job. A

    headhunter set up an inter-

view for me in a nearby town.

I dont remember the name of

    the company, but I sure

    remember the meeting.

    My interviewer was a

    young guy who immediately

    made me feel very confident

    and very comfortable. About

    half way through the inter-

view, I planted my feet firmly

on his desk. We talked about

    The Christmas Tree is a

    tradition that came

    from Europe and

    gained great popularity in the

United States, and the tradi-tional tree was often adorned

    with candles, stars, and food

such as cookies and candy to

    celebrate the season. It was

believed by some that the can-

    dles represented light, or the

birth of the Savior who would

be the Light of the World.

    Stars represented the light in

the sky that led the travelers to

the birthplace of the infantJesus. The treats were a way of

    giving thanks for having food

    throughout the year, and also

    served as gifts for children.

    So where does the candy

cane fit in as a symbol of

    Christmas? Back in the 1400s,

    priests in France developed an

    all-white stick of candy that

    was straight and not hooked.

As legend has it, a Frenchchoirmaster in the year 1670

bent one end of the straight

stick of candy into the shape of

the shepherds staff or crook, as

it was called. This crook then

    symbolized the shepherds in

    and around Bethlehem who

were the first to hear the good

    news. Red-and-white striped,

    peppermint-flavored candy

canes began to appear atChristmas time in the United

States during the early part of

    the 20th Century.

    Deciding to get a dog

    can be a life-altering

    moment. While the

decision carries with it a wealth

    of responsibility, a dog can

change a persons life for the

    better, providing loyalty and

    companionship for years to

    come.

Once the decision to get a

    dog has been made, prospective

    pet owners must choose a

    breed. Various factors play into

    this decision, including how

much space the dog will have at

    home, the grooming responsi-

bilities that come with a partic-

    ular breed and the typical

    demeanor of a given breed.

Because no two breeds or own-

ers are the same, some dog-

    owner combinations may make

for a better pairing than others.

    Descriptions of breed tem-

    perament can provide a win-

    dow into the general personali-

ty of certain dogs. But suchdescriptions are not set in

stone, as each dog is unique and

    may exhibit behaviors extraor-

dinary to its breed. Factors such

    as socialization and training

play key roles in how dogs will

react in situations, and the fol-

lowing are some dog breeds that

have a propensity to be easy-

    going and relatively easy to

    train.

    Golden retriever: Golden

    retrievers tend to be gregarious,

docile and a good fit for fami-

    lies. They are people-oriented,

    affectionate and loyal. Golden

    retrievers are moderately-sized

dogs that need exercise to pre-vent boredom (which can com-

    pel them to cause damage

    around the home). But golden

    retrievers are generally a good

    fit for first-time dog owners.

    Labrador retriever: A

    close cousin to the golden

    retriever, Labradors are another

    breed known for their good

    nature and willingness to be

    trained. Labs shed and can

grow large, so that is something

    apartment-dwellers must con-

    sider before bringing home a

    Lab.

    Standard poodle: Poodles

are an intelligent breed that are

easily trained. Poodles can behigh strung if not given ample

    exercise, so this is something

    prospective poodle owners

    need to consider.

    Cavalier King Charles

    spaniel: This is a well-propor-

tioned and smaller dog that is

    typically affectionate, happy

    Spider veins and varicose

    veins are different in ap-

    pearance but similar in

    their causes. With vari-

    cose veins, the valves lo-

    cated within the veins are

diseased and do not fully close to prevent

blood in the vein from flowing in the wrong

direction (called refluxing). This results in

bulging veins in the legs which are often blue

or purple in appearance. These varicoseveins can cause pain, numbness and fatigue

in the legs; and in more extreme cases can

    cause painful leg ulcers.

We refer to spider veins as smaller dis-

colored veins that have a spider web-like

appearance. These veins are generally not

    painful, and are treated cosmetically.

As we age, the risk of developing vari-

    cose veins increases. Approximately 30

50% of adults suffer from the underlying

condition, known as chronic venous insuffi-

    ciency, or CVI.

Approximately 80% of patients arewomen and only 20% are men.

Contributing factors that put a person at

risk of developing varicose veins include:

    Heredity

    Age

    Standing profession

    Being overweight or obese

    Hormonal issues

    What Causes Varicose and Spider

    Veins to Appear

    Non-functioning valves within a blood

vessel cause varicose veins. Veins return

blood back to the heart, but when a valve

does not function properly, it causes bloodto flow backwards into the vein. This is

called venous insufficiency and this back-

ward flow causes vein enlargement. Spider

veins can develop for the same reason, but

are further influenced by obesity, heredity,

    pregnancy and menopause.

    Signs of Vein Problems

The symptoms are similar for varicose

and spider veins, but are typically more se-

vere for varicose veins. Spider veins may

cause minor burning or itching at the site.

Varicose vein symptoms include leg aches

or cramps, a feeling of leg heaviness, burn-ing, throbbing or tingling. Skin ulcers, espe-

cially in the ankle area, are not uncommon

when varicose veins are particularly severe.

As the cost of livingcontinues to rise, hol-

    iday shopping also has

    become much more expensive

in recent years, and it can be

    easy for shoppers to overextend

    themselves financially come

the holiday season.According to a recent

    Gallup poll, the average

    American plans to spend

    around $790 per holiday sea-

    son, although many go above

    and beyond that amount.

Starting off the new year indebt is a recipe for stress, which

    can have negative repercus-

sions for the rest of the year.

    In addition to overspend-

    ing during the holiday season,

    many people stretch them-

    selves thin on Valentines Day,

    birthdays, and Mothers Day

and Fathers Day. One way to

    make shopping more manage-

    able is to establish spending

limits that dictate how mucheach family member can spend

on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact

    when approaching the subject

of gift limits. Discuss the topic

    with friends and family mem-

    bers with whom you usually

    exchange gifts long before the

holiday season. Agree on a rea-

sonable amount of money eachperson will spend on gifts. If

    necessary, ask everyone to write

down a figure and then deter-

    mine the average, using that

    figure as your spending limit.

    Establishing a spending

limit makes it easier for every

    family to afford their holiday

purchases. If there are six peo-

ple on your shopping list and

    youre spending $50 per person,

you know to allocate $300 forgifts. Saving and budgeting can

    be adjusted accordingly.

    When no such limit is

    established, you may go over-

    board to compensate, even if

you cannot afford to do so.

    Another way to save

money is to suggest giving the

    gift of experiences rather than

tangible and potentially costlygifts. For example, take a loved

one out for dinner or suggest

    going on vacation together to

make better use of your collec-

    tive funds. A well-timed

    extended family vacation in

lieu of gift exchanges may alle-

viate the stress of the holiday

season, much of which can be

    traced to holiday spending.Establishing a gift-giving

    strategy and budget for each

person to work with can make

    for a more peaceful holiday

season by freeing up time to

    spend with loved ones and

    placing the focus on family

    instead of shopping.

    22/28

    hundred years in the making,

    the focus of the celebration

    has very clear source material.

In the pages of scripture, we

see what the events of the first

    Christmas were and why we

    still celebrate that night thou-

    sands of years later.

Most of us are aware of

    the story of Christmas. The

    baby Jesus is born in

    Bethlehem to a young, newly

married Jewish couple -Joseph and Mary. But this is

no normal birth. Mary, a vir-

gin, is told by an angel that

the baby conceived in her is

    from the Holy Spirit

    (Matthew 1:20). This miracle

    happened to fulfill the

    prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, The

virgin will be with child and

will give birth to a son, and

    they will call him Immanuel.

The place of His birth is no

    coincidence either. The

    prophets were clear that the

    promised Messiah would be

    born in Bethlehem (Micah

5:2). Joseph and Mary, after a

trip to Egypt to escape the

anger of Herod, make their res-

idence in Nazareth by the Sea

of Galilee - again, a fulfillment

    of scripture (Isaiah 9:1-2).

So whats the big deal?Apart from the miracle of a

virgin having a son, what is so

    noteworthy to commemorate

    Christmas over two thousand

years later? This is where the

    scriptures come alive with

    verification for the joy that

    has been celebrated all these

    years.

    There is little debate

    over the humanity of Jesus.

Most would agree that at the

very least, He was the worlds

    greatest teacher. We see in

Him a lucidity of thought and

morality that is present in no

other person. As we look at

    Him in the Gospels

    (Matthew, Mark, Luke and

John) it is difficult not to walk

away with a deep sense that

He was not just a good man,

but a perfect human. But scripture does not

leave us there. It goes on to

describe Jesus as not only a

    perfect human, but also as

God. This is where we stum-

ble in our modern times, but

    scripture is clear. In

    Colossians 1:19, we read, For

God was pleased to have all

His fullness dwell in Jesus. In

    Colossians 2:9 God tells us

that In Jesus, all the fullness

of the Deity lives in bodily

form. Jesus was not just a

    fully perfect human, He was

fully perfect God. This is not

just the writings of His follow-

ers. Jesus claimed to be God

    (John 10:30) and asserted the

    attributes of God (Mark 2:5-

    12). Interestingly, this was

    foretold in the scriptures in

Isaiah 9:6. Note in this famil-iar verse that a child is born

    who will be called Mighty

    God and Everlasting Father.

    Both these terms are used

elsewhere in Isaiah as a refer-

    ence to God (Isaiah 10:20-21

and 64:8). So, in this verse we

    see God predicting through

    Isaiah that the Messiah would

    be both God and man.

    But again, we are left

    with the question, So what.

If we take the scriptures at

face value we can clearly see

that Jesus was both God and

    man. What is the celebration

all about? In order to under-

stand that, we must go back to

    Job.

    Job 9:33-35 says in refer-

    ence to his relationship with

    God, If only there were

someone to arbitrate betweenus, to lay his hand upon us

    both, someone to remove

Gods rod from me, so that His

    terror would frighten me no

more. Then I would speak up

without fear of Him, but as it

now stands with me, I can-

    not. Scripture teaches that

    our imperfections separate us

from a perfect God so that we

are all in Jobs dilemma - a

    desire to be in relationship

with God but with no basis for

    that relationship. That may

    seem appalling to many but

we are comforted that God is

    also appalled by our circum-

    stances. In Isaiah 59:16, God

says that He saw that there

was no one, He was appalled

that there was no one to inter-

vene; so His own arm worked

salvation for Him and Hisown righteousness sustained

    Him. God was not satisfied

in leaving us in a hopeless

    relationship. So He took on

    humanity in the person of

    Jesus. On that first Christmas

day in a manger, the desire of

    Job was finally realized. Jesus,

    who could represent humans

    (because He was fully human)

    and God (because He was

    fully God), was born to

    become the perfect mediator.

He lived the perfect life that

we cannot live and He took

    on the punishment that we

    deserved (we celebrate that

on Good Friday). It is through

    Jesus that we can receive

    righteousness (or a right

    standing) before God.

    How does that happen?

    The same way that Abraham

    received righteousness.

    Genesis 15:6 says that

    Abraham believed and it was

    credited to him as righteous-

    ness. There is nothing we

can do that causes God to owe

    us the righteousness from

Jesus. Instead, we have to trust

in Jesus - believe He is who

He said He is and that what

He did is sufficient to cover

    our imperfections. We are

then able to be in relationship

with God - and not just for

    today but for eternity.

    Thats good news!!

    Thats worth celebrating!!

    Thats what Christmas is real-

    ly all about!!

    Combine the eggs and

sugar in the bowl of an electric

    mixer fitted with a whisk

    attachment. Set the bowl over

a pan partially filled with sim-

    mering water. The water should

not touch the bowl. Using a

    whisk, beat the egg-sugar mix-

ture until it feels very warm to

the touch and all of the sugar

    has dissolved. Immediately

remove the bowl from the heatand transfer it to the electric

    mixer.

    Whip the egg-sugar mix-

ture on medium speed for 3 to 4

minutes until it triples in vol-

ume and is very thick and light

    colored. Add the vanilla and

whip 2 to 3 seconds longer to

    blend. Remove the bowl from

the mixer and gently fold in the

    flour-cocoa mixture.

    Place about 1 cups of

the batter in a separate bowl

and fold in the melted butter.

Do this gently, as you do not

    want to overwork the batter.

    Fold this into the remaining

    batter. Divide the batter evenly

    among the cupcake tins. Bake

in the center of the oven for 20

to 25 minutes, or until a tooth-

pick or knife inserted in the

    center of one cupcake comes

    out clean. Remove and cool

    completely on a rack.

    While the cupcakes are

    cooling, combine the heavy

    cream with the confectioners

sugar and the remaining 2tablespoons of cocoa, beat into

    soft peaks, and set aside.

    Remove the cupcakes

from the tin and place them on

    dessert plates. Spoon the

    whipped cream on top, divide

    plates and serve.

    Its Chanukah and in Israel

    and in many places around

    the world Jews are lighting

    candles in their window as

    night falls. Theyre adding a

little light to the world and

    reminding everyone of the mir-

    acles that happened to their

    ancestors so long ago.

    Over two thousand years

ago, the Jews of Israel were

    ruled by the Greek conquerors

    of Syria. Antiochus, the Greek

king, wanted all of his subjects

to live like Greeks so he made

    laws forbidding Jews to practice

their religion by forbidding thestudy of the Torah or keeping

    the mitzvot. The Jews revolted

and had a whole army fighting

    the Greeks. After many long

    years, the Jews finally threw

the Greek army out of the

    country. The first thing they

did as soon as they conquered

    Jerusalem was to rededicate the

    Temple (Chanukah means

    dedication.) When they

tried to light the menorah, all

they could find was enough oil

to last them for one day. To

    make more oil would have

taken at least a week eight

    days more likely. A miracle

happened and the little jar of

    oil burned for eight days.

    Ever since then, Jews

    have celebrated the victory

    over the Greeks during the

    holiday of Chanukah. On the

first night we light one candle,

on the second night we light

two candles, and so on. By theeighth night we have eight

    candles burning brightly,

reminding us of the eight days

that the oil burned in the

Temple and of the Jewish strug-

    gle against oppression.

    Pirsumei nisa or publi-

cizing the miracle is a very

    important custom on

    Chanukah. We light the can-

dles in a window or by a door

facing the street so that every-

one passing by will see them

    and remember the miracles

    that happened. The special

    menorah we use on Chanukah

    is called a chanukiah in

Hebrew. It has places for eight

candles and an extra place for

    the shamash the candle we

use to light all the other can-

    dles.

    Theres an old custom of

giving children gifts of coins on

    Chanukah. Sometimes the

    coins are real and sometimes

    they are made of chocolate

    (gelt.) Since the miracle of

    Chanukah happened through a

jar of oil, one way to remember

the miracle is to eat foods

cooked in oil duringChanukah. Latkes, or potato

pancakes fried to a crispy, gold-

    en brown are one popular

    Chanukah food. Sufganiyot

or jelly donuts are another as

they are also fried in oil.

    Dreidels are a favorite

    toy on Chanukah. They are

    four-sided tops with Hebrew

letters painted or carved on the

    sides. The letters nun, gimel,

heh, and shin stand for the

    Hebrew words: Nes gadol

    hayah sham (A great miracle

    happened there.) One way to

play dreidel is to spin it for

    money. Everyone puts a coin

or gelt in the pot, then they

spin the dreidel to see who

    wins: nun means nothing

you dont have to put in anoth-

er coin and you dont get any-

    thing; gimel means you get

    everything in the pot; heh

means you get half of what is in

the pot; and shin means youhave to put one into the pot.

In Israel, a dreidel is called a

    sevivon. The sevivon has a

peh instead of a shin on one

side, so that the letters stand

for Nes gadol hayah poh (A

    great miracle happened here.)

    Happy Chanukah!
