For many people these long, hot days of summer are thebest days of the year. Long, lazy days in the backyard, at thelake or down the shore.Unfortunately, summer also bringssome real dangers: Sun burn, poi-son ivy, and ticks that can ruindays, weeks and even months of
your summer. We cant eliminateall of those dangers but we do havesolutions for some of them.
POISON IVYIf youre allergic to poison ivy
(and 89% of all people are) thenyou know the misery of the itch-ing, swelling, and blistering thatgoes along with a poison ivy
attack. Poison ivy is a vicious weedthat grows all over our area.Poison Ivy contains Urushiol oil inits stems and on its leaves. TheUrushiol is what causes the allergicreaction. Once that oil gets onyour skin it usually takes 24 hours
for the bumps and itching to start.Poison ivy is not contagious oncethe rash breaks out, but if you havethe oil on your hands and touchsomeone else, or if your pet has theoil on her fur and you touch yourpet, the infection will spread. Theoil is so potent that even if you getit on your shoes, clothes, or gardentools, it can infect you for up to fiveyears when you touch those tools, clothes, or shoes again.
The best way to protect your-self from poison ivy is to know howto identify it and if it is growing onyour property, have it removed.Spraying an herbicide will stop itfrom growing but the Urushiol will
remain active in the dead stemsand leaves for years, leaving youprone to infection. Weed whack-ing will only chop it up and shootthe oil all over your lawn, shoes, and legs. The safest way to solvethe problem is to have a profes-
sional come in and remove it.Fortunately, in this area, PoisonIvy Gone (PoisonIvyGone.com -(888)-664-8966 / (888) - NO-IVY-
NOW) is a national leader in poi-son ivy removal. Based inOakland, NJ, Poison Ivy Goneserves our area and removes poisonivy by hand, digging it out beneathground level. They will come toyour property, identify the poisonivy, and try to determine where its
coming from. Then theyll explainthe best way to remove it, and howto prevent it from coming back.Because poison ivy is a weed thatdrops seeds frequently during the

C irca 1984: Back in theearly days of my busi-ness career I felt theitch to branch out on my own.The question was: Doing what?I decided it would be best if Itook my newly found computerskills and see if I could persuadeanyone to hire me for part-
time work (After all, I had afull time job).I decided to name the
company Pellegrino Manage-ment Systems. I loved thename and began to share myvision with co-workers.However, one day as I wassharing the name with awoman I worked with shesaid, Are you kidding? Iasked her why she would say
that and she responded,Take a look at the initials of your company. When I
looked, I realized it would prob-ably not be a good idea to havea company called PMS!
Purpose needs to beflushed out. Being able tobounce ideas and thoughts off some trusted friends can beinvaluable and save you a
whole bunch of headaches(and embarrassment!).Think about it...
Have you ever discov-ered what you thought yourpurpose was only to have itblown up in your face? What if you had a strong inner circle
to act as an advisory
board? Do you think thatwould have made a differ-ence?
Do you have an inner cir-cle that you can trust? If not, will you think about build-ing one?
Joe Pellegrino is an author, speaker, radio host and consultant for Not

Summer is a time for fun swimming, picnics, baseball games, andplaying with your dog in yourfreshly mowed lawn. The onlydownside to summer is theheat! For us humans its easyto keep a tall glass of lemon-ade around or crank the airconditioning up to keep uscool during these months.
But our pets dont oftenhave it so easy. It can be mis-erable for your dog to be stuckin the heat for long periods of time with no way to keepcool. While its obviouslypreferable to keep your bestfriend indoors when theweather gets hot, sometimesits not practical.
If you absolutely have tokeep your dog outside duringthese hot months, then thereare a few simple things you
can do to keep your dog safeand cool. You dont want toforget these tips; they areabsolutely essential.
First off, make sure yourdog has plenty of shade. Youcan build a simple pavilionout of scrap wood and a tarp if there is no other shade source.Shade can make a big differ-ence!
Also, make sure your doghas lots of cool water. Theymake great water bowls nowthat can be hooked up to ahose and that continuallyrefills the bowl when thewater level drops below a cer-tain point. Its great becauseyour dog will never run out of cool water!
Another super way tokeep your dog cool is to givehim access to a kiddie poolfilled with water, but this is
only for dogs that like thewater and are able to swim.Remember: safety first! Dontdo this if you have a small,
short-legged dog that coulddrown in the pool.
Finally, and one of thebest ways to keep your petcool during the summer, youcan get your dog a cooling dog
bed (also known as a dog cool-ing mat). This is a great way
to make sure your dog stayscomfortable in that blisteringsummer heat. And if you arelooking for a cheap dog bed, acooling dog bed or dog cool-ing mat usually does not costtoo much and works great. They require no electricity;they work by simply dispersingthe water inside the dog cool-ing mat when dogs lie down, providing a cool, dry place tosleep. Theyre made out of atough nylon material so thatclaws wont puncture whenthe dog walks across them.Cooling dog beds are a greatway to keep your favorite petfrom suffering in the hot sum-mer sun. These dog coolingmats are also great for dogsthat have just gotten backfrom playing outside or fromtaking a doggie walk.
Remember to always fol-
low these tips when your dogis outside in the summer. Inthe end, however, the bestway to keep your dog cool is tokeep it indoors when the heatis too much!

I was using the weed whacker in mybackyard, I knew there was a little poison ivy, but now my arms and legsare infected, why?
Unfortunately when you weed whack poison ivy, you are just spraying the oil all over your feet, legs, lawn, and Weed Whacker.

Q.TO USE
i|x The reason that people get arash from poison ivy is theUrushiol Oil that is in the plant.Unfortunately when you weed
whack poison ivy, you are just spraying theoil all over your feet, legs, lawn, and WeedWhacker. That oil will stay active on toolsand clothes for up to five years. The littlepieces of chopped up poison ivy laying onyour lawn contain Urushiol and can cause arash on anyone who touches them.
Next time you touch your weed whackeryoure probably going to get Urushiol onyour skin again, so be careful.
Weed whacking or even mowing poison ivydoes not kill it. The poison ivy will growback. The danger is, once youve cut theleaves off it becomes impossible to identify, making you more vulnerable to infection.Even spraying an herbicide will not protectyou from infection because the Urushiolstays active in the dead plant for years.
The best way to protect your family frompoison ivy is to have us remove it for you.
Our technicians will identify the poison ivyon your property, try to determine whereits coming from, and tell you the best wayto eliminate it and prevent it from returning. We remove poisonivy by hand becauseit is the safest, mosteffective way tocontrol and eliminatethe problem.

Moving is seldomeasy. But even afterall of the boxes
have been unpacked and thefurniture moved in, some of the difficulty of movingremains. Much of thatremaining struggle can betraced to adjusting to yournew environment.
Though many people set-tle into a new residence after ashort period of time, acclimat-ing yourself to a new commu-nity is a taller order, especiallyfor those without friends orfamily already entrenched inthe community. The following
are a handful of ways men andwomen who recently relocat-ed to a new community canacclimate themselves to theirnew surroundings.Join a local communityorganization. Local communi-ty organizations provide greatopportunities to meet newpeople and learn about a townor neighborhood. Parents mayfind such organizations moreaccessible, as associations thatfocus on local youngsters arequite common. Adults canjoin parental organizationssponsored by their childrensschool or volunteer with an
extracurricular organization, such as a local youth sportsprogram. These are great waysfor moms and dads to meet fel-low parents and begin formingnew friendships.
Singles or married cou-ples without children also cantake advantage of communityorganizations. Volunteer with
an environmental cleanupgroup or sign up to play in arecreational sports league withneighbors in your age group.Opportunities to assimilateinto your new communityabound, it just takes a littleeffort on your part to getinvolved.Make an effort to meet your
neighbors. The days of yorewhen everyone knew theirneighbors are largely a thingof the past, but that doesntmean you cant make an effortto meet the people who live
next door. Once you have set-tled in, knock on your nextdoor neighbors doors andintroduce yourself. If you real-ly want to go the extra mile,

host a casual backyard barbecue andinvite your neighbors and their fam-ilies. Such an affair can be a greatway to break the ice and you mightjust find your neighbors share similarinterests.Dont be a shut-in. Communitiesare often home to numerous tradi-tions, and many such traditions areaimed at increasing the sense of com-munity within a given town. Summercarnivals or winter holiday balls canmake for a fun way to assimilate intoa community and meet your neigh-bors. Leave the couch and your tele-vision behind to take advantage of such opportunities when they presentthemselves.Join a professional organization. Many professionals find the demands
of their careers are simply too greatto give them the amount of timethey need to fully assimilate intotheir new communities. In suchinstances, men and women mightwant to join their local professional
organization, which can help themmeet professional peers and makecontacts that can pay both profes-sional and personal dividends. If nosuch organization exists in your com-munity, consider starting one.
The difficulty of moving is oftenconsidered a burden on children. Butadults may struggle to acclimate to anew community as well. Making thatadjustment and learning to thrive inyour new community may requiresome creativity and a little extraeffort on your part, but it can be done.
