A ll delicatessens are the same. Don’t say that to Joe Fiore, owner of Bella Sara Italian Specialties of Pompton Lakes. Why? Because Joe is passionate about food, its presen- tation and his cus- tomers. Since estab- lishing his business in Pompton Lakes he has had one vision: to provide the local commu- nity with an old fashioned, out of this world Italian deli. By all accounts he has done that. As Joe reflected he gave a bit of insight into his roots saying, “It all goes back to my childhood, I use to help my grandma when she was cooking in the kitchen. I not only loved what she created but I grew pas- sionate about the process. Funny thing is even though I learned from my grandma’s kitchen the recipe for the sauce that we now make actu- ally came from my father! In fact all of my recipes are fam- ily recipes.” That means Joe, and his wife Luisa, make every- thing from scratch using nothing but fresh ingredients. The results? Incredible variations of roast beef, pork roast, fresh mozzarella, pasta salads, chicken and pork cutlets, stuffed peppers & egg- plant to name a few. If it’s not good enough to be on Joe’s table it won’t end up on yours! Need breakfast? His morn- ing menu includes pancakes, French toast, omelets and of course egg sandwiches. Add to that a delicious cup of coffee or espresso and you are ready to tackle another day. Does Bella Sara cater? You bet. Whether its wraps, sand- wich platters, soups, salads or specialties, Joe will take good care of you and ensure that you will be satisfied. In fact Joe has made it more of a science stat- ing, “It’s important to know the guests you are cooking for and explain to the host/hostess that sometimes it’s not about the food Proverbs 3:5,6 • God Bless America Recycled Paper from 30% Post Consumer Waste October 15, 2014 Zone 1,Vol. 12, No. 20 We are a Family, Friendly Publication Wayne continued on page 21 Bella Sara: A reminder that the old can be new! As a Retirement andEstate PlanningSpecialist, it is my

obligation to discuss differentportfolio risks with clientssuch as being too heavilyinvested in the equities mar-ket or the risks inherent inbonds when interest rates rise.Another common risk thatconcerns all of us is inflationand the erosion of our pur-chasing power. There are cur-rency and geo-political riskssuch as wars and disease like;ISIS and Ebola replacing theheadlines of a few years agothat read, “Persian Gulf andAIDS”. There is the risk of aliability lawsuit if someoneslips and falls on your proper-ty, or a mishap with your car, that may leave your retire-ment portfolio vulnerable to alawsuit. Sickness and the costof healthcare have the poten-tial to invade or wipe-out aportfolio if it is not properlyinsured.

Then there is the poten-tial for a long-term care stay, that in our area costs in excessof $120,000 annually andwhat about the cost of main-taining your home while youare a guest in that facility?

Home health care costs are nobargain either, with qualitynon-medical staff costingmore than $35.00 an hour.

Moreover there is therisk of out-living your money, did you ever think about that? This is referred to as longevi-ty risk. The longer you live, the more potent inflation be-comes, the larger your with-drawals must be just to main-tain your exact standard ofliving, not increase it; thiswill exacerbate the reductionof your portfolio. What hap-pens if you are still here andyour money isn’t? Thisthought leads me to a ques-tion. What annual rate ofreturn do you expect yourportfolio to consistently earnthroughout your retirementyears and what withdrawalrate do you believe you canmaintain simultaneouslyagainst it? Please factor-inincreasing that withdrawalrate by any inflation factoryou desire and now, will yourmoney last as long as you andyour spouse do?

These are extremelytough questions to ask andeven tougher to deal with formost financial advisors. Since

the markets were better per-forming thirty years ago whenplanning ahead for 2014, pres-ent day portfolio planningcannot effectively employ thethinking of 3 decades ago.Asset allocation and diversifi-cation are simply not enoughin this financial advisors opin-ion; not even close, I wouldadd. For my money I desire aguaranteed* scenario and theoverwhelming majority of myclients agree with me.

People like us want toknow what our lifetime mini-mum monthly check will beand how it may increasebeyond that figure, while, guaranteed* never to reduceor cease before both husbandand wife are gone. In otherwords, we will never exhaustour income! Positioned OUT,IN and ON the stock andbond markets, we will enjoythe rising tide of the collec-tive market’s positive impacton our portfolios and income, yet when the market’s recedeand the tide turns, our incomewill never be diminished.Every scenario is different dueto client choices of companiesand products; also there arecertain fees, expenses and

parameters within eachinvestment, which goes with-out saying. Prospectuses andproduct brochures should beread and understood beforeinvesting your hard-earnedmoney.

What is universal thoughis that even if the accounts arediminished to nothing from acombination of withdrawals, bad markets and personallongevity, if either you or yourwife is still living, the month-ly checks will never stop beingdeposited electronically intoyour checking account! I am

describing the benefits andattributes of Fixed Indexedand Variable Annuities withan optional living benefitrider and I am only scratchingthe surface in this brief col-umn space. Suffice it to say, annuities today are extremelyadvanced and enhancedwhen compared to annuitiesof both the 20th century andeven those issued just a fewyears ago.

If a portion of the portfo-lio income were directedtoward a properly owned lifeinsurance policy, coveringeither one or both of the par-

ents, upon the insureds demisethe tax-free death benefit mayreplace the entire portfolio orbe in addition to it for thebenefit of the children. Hereyou can have your cake andeat it too!

To learn more of how toguarantee* your retirementincome, I would like to per-sonally invite you to attendour free, no obligation work-shop series running October21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 1-3pmand 7-9pm at our corporateheadquarters in PomptonPlains or call me for an indi-

vidualized appointment. AtAPG we never charge a fee forour time and you don’t haveto make any financial com-mitments when meeting withme. Come over, we’ll talk andyou’ll gain a second opinionon your current financial planfor free!

Dr. Harold Katz, a den-tist out of BeverlyHills, claims that a

bitter powder found in darkchocolate, theobromine, canactually harden the enamel.

This would add protection toteeth against the possibleimpact of staining. Milk

chocolate, however, wouldnot have the same effectbased on its high content of

sugar which creates plaqueand bad breath.

Dr. Harold Katz alsostates that cheese, green tea,and strawberries have a bene-ficial impact when it comesto whitening teeth. Thefoods, just like dark choco-late, produce the best resultswhen consumed early in the

day before plaque builds uplater.

Strawberries can bemashed into a paste and bak-

ing soda to create a naturalwhitening solution. This, however, doesn’t work for allberries as some actually stainteeth. Malic acid in strawber-ries is the ingredient thatworks. Green tea helpsbecause it contains tanninsand polyphenols that stopbacteria and plaque fromadhering to tooth surfaces.

Some tax-cutting strate-gies make good finan-cial sense. Other tax

strategies are simply bad ideas, often because tax considera-tions are allowed to overridebasic economics.

Here’s one example ofthe tax tail wagging the eco-nomic dog. Let’s say that yourun an unincorporated con-sulting business. You wantsome additional tax write-off,so you decide to buy $10,000of office furniture that youdon’t really need. If you’re inthe 28% bracket and youdeduct the entire cost, thispurchase will trim your tax billby $2,800 (28% of $10,000).But even after the tax break, you’ll still be out of pocket$7,200 ($10,000 less $2,800)— and stuck with furniturethat you don’t really need.

There are other situa-tions in which people oftenfocus on tax considerations

and ignore the bigger finan-cial picture. For example:

Someone increases thesize of a home mortgage, sole-ly to get a larger tax deduc-tion for mortgage interest.

A homeowner hesitatesto pay off a mortgage, just tokeep the interest deduction.Someone turns down extraincome, because it mightpush them into a higher taxbracket.

An investor holds anappreciated asset indefinitely,

solely to avoid paying the cap-ital gains tax.

As a general rule, thebest tax strategies are thosethat generate a deduction andleave you in control of your

money. This is what happens, for example, with IRAs,401(k)s, and other retirementplans. Strategies that result intax deferral can also be desir-able, since you get to pay yourtax bill years from now in usu-ally cheaper, inflated dollars.

Tax-cutting strategies are

usually part of a bigger finan-cial picture. If you are plan-ning any tax-related transac-tions, we can help make surethat everything stays in focus.Give us a call for any assis-tance you need.

While Halloweencan be fun foradults and chil-

dren, pets might not look for-ward to October 31 as much asthe rest of the family. Whentrick-or-treating time arrivesand the doorbell gets its annu-al workout, pet parents shouldtake steps to ensure their dogs, cats and other companionanimals stay calm and don’tget too frightened or excited.

Halloween is full of deco-

rations, costumes andstrangers ringing your door-bell. While the excitementcan be thrilling for children, pets can easily grow scared.Animals generally becomecreatures of routine, and any-thing that takes them out oftheir comfort zones can be acause for agitation. Spookydecorations hung throughoutthe house and outdoors pres-ent new sights and smells. Thedoorbell ringing every few

minutes could put skittish petseven more on edge — espe-cially when they come face-to-face with hordes of cos-tumed trick-or-treaters.

Candy, chocolate in par-ticular, poses a large risk aswell. Even relatively smallamounts of chocolate can beharmful to cats and dogs. That’s because chocolate con-tains caffeine and theo-bromine, two different typesof stimulants that can wreakhavoc on an animal’s centralnervous system. Hard candiesmay be swallowed and be-come lodged in the throat ordigestive tract. Artificialsweeteners are harmful to ani-mals, too.

To help keep pets safe, itis best to consider the follow-ing tips for Halloween.1.Keep pets indoors for the

day. Animals that are fright-ened may run away or growdisoriented and get lost. Also, you never want your pet to bethe victim of a Halloweenprank. Sometimes black catsare stolen on Halloween. Dogsleft outside may be at risk forteasing and taunting, too.2.Don’t take dogs trick-or-treating. Although you mayhave a calm, well-mannereddog, the crowds in the neigh-borhood may excite man’sbest friend, whose behaviormight be difficult to predict. Also, other animals that getloose from homes when thedoors are opened may provokeyour dog. It’s enough to keepyour eyes on your children, never mind being mindful ofyour dog, too!3.Skip costumes for pets. Youmay think it’s a cute idea to

dress your pets in costumes, but there’s a good chance yourpet does not share your enthu-siasm. It may stress out theanimal, so avoid pet costumes.4.Be mindful of holiday deco-rations. Strings of lights, fakespider webs and other decora-tive items can be tripping haz-ards for pets, while electronicdevices could pose a safetyrisk. Avoid lit candles in thehome because cats or dogsmay knock them over.5.Keep pets secured in a bed-room or another quiet space.Your dog or cat may try to boltoutside every time you openthe door to trick-or-treaters.Instead, keep the animals in abedroom or laundry area. Notonly will they appreciate thequiet, but also they won’thave a chance to escape andget lost.

6.Store collected candy out ofreach. Pets are inquisitive, and they may be drawn to thesweet smell of candy andtreats. Candy wrappers andthe candy itself can be haz-ardous to pets. Therefore, store candy where pets cannotaccess it and be sure childrendiscard candy wrappers.

Are Varicose Veins a concern formen as well as women?

Most men are sur-prised to learnthat they can suf-fer from vein con-ditions that theythought only af-

fected women. Though most of thecosmetic conditions such as spiderveins, affect mostly women, othervenous conditions occur in menequally. As many as 15% of men ages40-79 suffer from venous disease, and more than 40% of men in theirseventies are affected by varicoseveins. They can lead to discol-oration, skin ulcers, and bleeding. Men with venous insufficiencyusually can be seen with bulgingveins in their lower legs. Somesymptoms may include: Itching, legpain, leg fatigue, swelling and heavi-ness, skin color changes and venousulcers. Remember...These are notCOSMETIC concerns like you thinkor have been told.

Options for Treatmentinclude: Sclerotherapy is used commonlyfor spider veins. The sclerosing liq-uid acts upon the lining of the vein

to cause it to seal shut, eliminatingthe vein completely.Microphlebectomy is a minimallyinvasive procedure in which a largesurface of varicose vein is removedthrough a series of miniature inci-sions that require no stitches. Endovenous laser treatment.Vascular Laser Therapy is a mini-mally-invasive procedure that canbe performed in the office in lessthan one hour. In this procedure, athin laser fiber is inserted into thediseased vein. The physician deliv-ers laser energy through the fiber, causing the vein to close. Endovenous Radiofrequencytreatment. EVRF is based onthermocoagulation. Thermocoagu-lation is the heating of the vein wallthrough radio frequency waveswhich makes the vein coagulate. The physician will insert a thincatheter, delivering a high fre-quency impulse through the devicemaking the vein coagulate, shrinkand disappear. There is virtually nopain, bruising, or scaring seen andnormal activities can be resumedwithin one day. These procedure options aredone on an outpatient basis in ourstate-of-the-art vein center.

As the leaves fall offthe trees and green-ery thins out for the

season, exposing branchesand undergrowth along theway, homeowners may betempted to prune their treesand shrubs. But while autumnpruning may seem like a goodidea, many gardening expertssay it is often best for home-owners to wait until winter orearly spring before pruning.

Although pruning doesthin out branches and tamespent blooms, which can beeyesores, pruning also stimu-lates new growth. Pruning inthe autumn, when plants arenaturally preparing to go dor-mant, can weaken the plantsconsiderably. This can com-promise their chances of sur-viving into the next growingseason.

Fall temperatures also

can be deceiving. While itmay be warm during the daywhen the sun is shining, tem-

peratures can quickly dropovernight. Pruning during thewarmth of day, when the sap

has risen in the plants, maydeplete energy from the plant. When the mercury drops at

night, the plant can suffer. If you must spend time in

the yard in the fall, tend tothe leaves and debris thathave already fallen to theground rather than focusingenergy on fall pruning. If youhave been diligent during thespring and summer, yourshrubs and other plants likelywon’t need pruning at thistime of year.

Wait until winter beforetaking out the shears. At thispoint, the woody parts ofmany plants are dormant andwill not be harmed or primedto grow by the pruning.Chances are you won’t prunetoo much as well, as chillytemperatures will keep youfrom spending too much timeoutdoors.

When it’s time to prune, consider these other pointers.Keep tools clean and in goodworking order. You risk injuryif your tools are dull and inpoor shape overall. Spendtime sharpening pruners andkeep manual tools oiled andclean. Debris can lodge itselfin clippers, making it moredifficult to open and shutthem. Wash and dry toolsafter use, especially when

dealing with diseased plants.Otherwise you risk spreadingdisease to healthy plants.

Cut back stems com-pletely. It’s usually a good ideato prune branches back to themain stem. Leaving a portionsticking out can catch on peo-ple or animals and produce agathering spot for bacteriaand insects. Take out thinner, smaller shoots first beforemoving on to any dead ordying branches.

Prune dry branches. Do

not prune when plants arewet. Pruning damp plantsencourage the growth ofmicrobes that can infiltratethe plant. This is not as signif-icant a problem in the winter, when microbes have alreadybeen killed.

Ask an expert. If you areunsure of how and when toprune particular plants, con-sult with an expert at a nurs-ery or wherever you buy yourplants.

Halloween is as muchabout candy as it isabout dressing up in

fun costumes and engaging inscare tactics.

Humans have loved theirsweets for centuries. Earlyhuman beings made candy outof honey by drying it andforming a taffy-like confec-tion, while many modernincarnations of candy involvedissolving sugar into water ormilk to form a syrup. Candy isthen made by varying thetemperature of the syrup andthe sugar concentration toachieve desired textures. Theword “candy” is derived fromthe Arabic “quandi,” meaning“made of sugar.”

Candy also often refers tochocolate bars and othertreats that people find sodelectable. Ancient Mayansand Aztecs were the first toexperiment with the cocoa

bean, the cornerstone ofchocolate confections, in the1500s. However, their choco-late drinks were bitter and notthe sweet delights we’ve cometo associate with chocolate. Itwasn’t until the 19th centurythat innovators began mixingcocoa with sugar to createchocolate bars. Joseph Fry iscredited with making the firstchocolate bar in 1847, usingbittersweet chocolate. Milkchocolate came later, in 1875,when it was introduced by

Henry Nestlé and DanielPeter. Milton Hershey beganproducing sweet chocolate in1894.

Hershey bars, Nestlé barsand many other original can-dies are still in productiontoday. Tootsie Rolls andCharleston Chews are otherclassic candies still produced.Good & Plenty debuted in1893, making it the oldestbranded candy in America.NECCO Company Waferswere officially branded in1901 and are another classictreat consumers can still findin the candy aisle of theirnearest grocery store.

Smarties is anothercandy that’s bound to show upin trick-or-treat bags thisHalloween. Smarties havebeen owned and operated bythe same family since 1949.The Ce De Candy Inc. factoryopened up in August 1949 in

Bloomfield, NJ, and produceda candy that would not meltin the heat. Smarties are afavorite all over NorthAmerica and elsewhere. When demand is too high forthe NJ factory, particularlyaround Halloween, Smartiesare also produced in aCanadian factory in Newmar-ket, Ontario. Smarties import-ed to the United States arestill called Smarties. However,Smarties sold in Canada areknown as “Rockets,” as anoth-er candy sold in Canadaalready bears the Smartiesname.

Halloween wouldn’t benearly as sweet without trovesof candy treasures. Childrenare urged to have their candysorted and inspected by par-ents prior to eating to avoidany dangers, such as foodallergies or tampering.

a large amount of money attheir disposal, people believethat celebrity musicians, actorsand sports figures are invinci-ble. Yet, just like regular peo-ple, celebrities are susceptibleto the same illnesses as privatecitizens.

Picture this…

Circa 1998. I had afriend who was underthe impression that

he was a good boss. Hebelieved he spoke in the right

tone and treated those underhim with respect. NOT!

In reality, he was the typeof guy that would barkrequests at his secretary. Forexample, when he asked herto get him a cup of coffee, he

thought he was being verypolite. But what came out ofhis mouth was simply a gruff,“COFFEE!”

Sometimes we don’t seeourselves as we really are. It’slike we are blinded by visions

of grandeur. Whether we areleading ourselves, our familiesor a group of people, this canhave a very negative and last-ing impact.

Think about it…

Have you ever lookeddeep into a mirror, past thereflection, to the inner you?Would you like to? Manywould say no to that question, but the truth is that if we havethe courage to face ourselvesso that we see what others see,

change can happen. Try this. Ask 2 or 3 peo-

ple who know you very well, and who you can trust to tellyou the truth, what yourstrengths and weaknesses areand how you are perceived byothers. If you have thecourage to do this and listenintently- without jumpingdown their throat- I think youmight come face to face with anew reflection. One that willput a smile on your face (aswell as the person getting youthe coffee!). Don’t have any-one you can trust? Well, that’ssomething else to think about.
