    The pink ribbon has

    been synonymous with

    breast cancer for years.

    Nowadays, people rarely think

twice when they see pink rib-

    bons, having grown accustomed

to the pink ribbon and what it

    symbolizes.Breast Cancer Awareness

    Month has been celebrated each

year since 1985, and many other

    breast cancer awareness initia-

    tives have been devised since

then. While the pink ribbon may

seem like its been in use for just

as long, it was actually established

    only about 20 years ago.

    Ribbons have long symbol-

    ized something important. For

decades, yellow ribbons havebeen used to alert others to sol-

diers at war or hostages that had-

nt yet come home. People often

tie yellow ribbons around trees at

home until their service men and

    women came home safely. During

    the height of HIV/AIDS activism

    and awareness, red ribbons were

    worn to symbolize support for

    those with the disease.

    Although the pink ribbon

    evolved because pink expresses

    femininity, calm, health, and

youth, the first breast cancer rib-

    bon was actually peach. Charlotte

    Haley is credited with devising

the first breast cancer ribbon in

1992. She was a breast cancer sur-

vivor and came from a family of

women who also fought the dis-

    ease. She created peach-colored

loops at home and then distrib-

uted the ribbons at her local gro-cery stores. Haley encouraged

people to wear the ribbons and

    contact legislators to demand

    more funding for breast cancer

    research. An attached note was

    distributed with the ribbons stat-

    ing, The National Cancer

    Institute annual budget is $1.8

billion, only 5 percent goes for

    cancer prevention. Help us wake

up our legislators and America by

wearing this ribbon. The same year Evelyn

    As a Retirement and

    Estate Planning

    Specialist, it is my

    obligation to discuss different

    portfolio risks with clients

    such as being too heavily

    invested in the equities mar-

ket or the risks inherent in

    bonds when interest rates rise.

    Another common risk that

concerns all of us is inflation

and the erosion of our pur-chasing power. There are cur-

    rency and geo-political risks

    such as wars and disease like;

    ISIS and Ebola replacing the

headlines of a few years ago

    that read, Persian Gulf and

AIDS. There is the risk of a

    liability lawsuit if someone

slips and falls on your proper-

ty, or a mishap with your car,

    that may leave your retire-

ment portfolio vulnerable to alawsuit. Sickness and the cost

    of healthcare have the poten-

tial to invade or wipe-out a

portfolio if it is not properly

    insured.

    Then there is the poten-

tial for a long-term care stay,

that in our area costs in excess

    of $120,000 annually and

what about the cost of main-

    taining your home while you

are a guest in that facility?

Home health care costs are no

    bargain either, with quality

    non-medical staff costing

    more than $35.00 an hour.

    Moreover there is the

    risk of out-living your money,

did you ever think about that?

This is referred to as longevi-

ty risk. The longer you live,

    the more potent inflation be-

    comes, the larger your with-

drawals must be just to main-tain your exact standard of

    living, not increase it; this

    will exacerbate the reduction

    of your portfolio. What hap-

pens if you are still here and

    your money isnt? This

thought leads me to a ques-

    tion. What annual rate of

    return do you expect your

    portfolio to consistently earn

    throughout your retirement

years and what withdrawalrate do you believe you can

    maintain simultaneously

    against it? Please factor-in

    increasing that withdrawal

    rate by any inflation factor

you desire and now, will your

money last as long as you and

    your spouse do?

    These are extremely

    tough questions to ask and

even tougher to deal with for

    most financial advisors. Since

    the markets were better per-

    forming thirty years ago when

    planning ahead for 2014, pres-

    ent day portfolio planning

    cannot effectively employ the

    thinking of 3 decades ago.

    Asset allocation and diversifi-

    cation are simply not enough

    in this financial advisors opin-

ion; not even close, I would

add. For my money I desire a

guaranteed* scenario and theoverwhelming majority of my

    clients agree with me.

    People like us want to

    know what our lifetime mini-

    mum monthly check will be

    and how it may increase

    beyond that figure, while,

    guaranteed* never to reduce

    or cease before both husband

and wife are gone. In other

    words, we will never exhaust

our income! Positioned OUT,IN and ON the stock and

    bond markets, we will enjoy

the rising tide of the collec-

    tive markets positive impact

    on our portfolios and income,

    yet when the markets recede

and the tide turns, our income

    will never be diminished.

    Every scenario is different due

    to client choices of companies

    and products; also there are

    certain fees, expenses and

    parameters within each

    investment, which goes with-

    out saying. Prospectuses and

    product brochures should be

    read and understood before

    investing your hard-earned

    money.What is universal though

is that even if the accounts are

    diminished to nothing from a

    combination of withdrawals,

    bad markets and personal

longevity, if either you or your

wife is still living, the month-

ly checks will never stop being

    deposited electronically into

    your checking account! I am

    describing the benefits and

    attributes of Fixed Indexed

    and Variable Annuities with

    an optional living benefit

rider and I am only scratching

the surface in this brief col-umn space. Suffice it to say,

    annuities today are extremely

    advanced and enhanced

    when compared to annuities

of both the 20th century and

even those issued just a few

    years ago.

If a portion of the portfo-

    lio income were directed

    toward a properly owned life

    insurance policy, covering

either one or both of the par-

    ents, upon the insureds demise

    the tax-free death benefit may

    replace the entire portfolio or

be in addition to it for the

    benefit of the children. Here

you can have your cake and

eat it too!To learn more of how to

    guarantee* your retirement

income, I would like to per-

    sonally invite you to attend

    tor Alexandra Penney teamed

up to produce a pink ribbon. It

    was distributed at makeup

    counters all across the coun-

try. The company collectedmore than 200,000 pink rib-

    bon petitions asking the U.S.

    government for increased

    funding for breast cancer

    research.

    Although Lauder and

    Haley reached people on dif-

    ferent levels, their goals were

the same: To educate the pub-

lic on the lack of funds allot-

    ted to breast cancer research.

Pink ribbons are nowseen all over and have become

    the uniting force for millions

    of women who are facing

    breast cancer or supporting

    someone with the disease. In

    1996, Nancy Nick created a

    blue-and-pink ribbon to sym-

    bolize male breast cancer rib-

bons in honor of her late

    father. The ribbons remind

    others that breast cancer can

affect men as well as women.Although you can see

    waves of pink every October

    for Breast Cancer Awareness

    Month, many people don

    their ribbons year-round.

    Great strides have been made

    with respect to breast cancer,

    but with about 225,000 new

cases popping up each year in

    the United States alone, there

is still work to be done.

    D

    r. Harold Katz, a den-

    tist out of Beverly

Hills, claims that abitter powder found in dark

    chocolate, theobromine, can

    actually harden the enamel.

    This would add protection to

    teeth against the

    possible impact of

    staining. Milk

    chocolate, however,

    would not have the

    same effect based on

    its high content of

    sugar which createsplaque and bad

    breath.

    Dr. Harold Katz

    also states that

    cheese, green tea,

    and strawberries

    have a beneficial

    impact when it

    comes to whitening

    teeth. The foods,

    just like dark choco-

    late, produce thebest results when

    consumed early in

    the day before plaque builds

    up later.

Strawberries can bemashed into a paste and bak-

ing soda to create a natural

    whitening solution. This,

    however, doesnt work for all

    berries as some actually stain

    teeth. Malic acid in strawber-

    ries is the ingredient that

    works. Green tea helps

because it contains tanninsand polyphenols that stop

    bacteria and plaque from

    adhering to tooth surfaces.

    Some tax-cutting strate-

    gies make good finan-

    cial sense. Other tax

    strategies are simply bad ideas,

    often because tax considera-

    tions are allowed to override

    basic economics.

    Heres one example of the

    tax tail wagging the economic

dog. Lets say that you run

    an unincorporated consulting

    business. You want some addi-

    tional tax write-off, so you

decide to buy $10,000 of office

    furniture that you dont really

need. If youre in the 28%

    bracket and you deduct the

    entire cost, this purchase will

trim your tax bill by $2,800

    (28% of $10,000). But even

after the tax break, youll still

    be out of pocket $7,200

    ($10,000 less $2,800) and

    stuck with furniture that you

    dont really need.

    There are other situations

in which people often focus on

    tax considerations and ignore

    the bigger financial picture. For

    example:

    Someone increases the

size of a home mortgage, solely

to get a larger tax deduction for

    mortgage interest.

    A homeowner hesitates to

pay off a mortgage, just to keep

    the interest deduction.

    Someone turns down extra

    income, because it might push

them into a higher tax bracket.

    An investor holds an

    appreciated asset indefinitely,

solely to avoid paying the capi-

    tal gains tax.

As a general rule, the best

    tax strategies are those that

    generate a deduction and leave

you in control of your money.

    This is what happens, for

    example, with IRAs, 401(k)s,

    and other retirement plans.

    Strategies that result in tax

    deferral can also be desirable,

since you get to pay your tax

bill years from now in usually

    cheaper, inflated dollars.

    Tax-cutting strategies are

usually part of a bigger financial

picture. If you are planning any

    tax-related transactions, we

can help make sure that every-

thing stays in focus. Give us a

call for any assistance you need.

    While Halloween

    can be fun for

    adults and chil-

dren, pets might not look for-

ward to October 31 as much as

the rest of the family. When

    trick-or-treating time arrives

and the doorbell gets its annu-

    al workout, pet parents should

take steps to ensure their dogs,

    cats and other companion

    animals stay calm and dont

    get too frightened or excited.

    Halloween is full of deco-

    rations, costumes and

    strangers ringing your door-

    bell. While the excitement

    can be thrilling for children,

    pets can easily grow scared.

    Animals generally become

    creatures of routine, and any-

thing that takes them out of

their comfort zones can be a

    cause for agitation. Spooky

    decorations hung throughout

    the house and outdoors pres-

ent new sights and smells. The

    doorbell ringing every few

    minutes could put skittish pets

    even more on edge espe-

    cially when they come face-

    to-face with hordes of cos-

    tumed trick-or-treaters.

    Candy, chocolate in par-

ticular, poses a large risk as

    well. Even relatively small

    amounts of chocolate can be

    harmful to cats and dogs.

    Thats because chocolate con-

    tains caffeine and theo-

    bromine, two different types

    of stimulants that can wreak

    havoc on an animals central

    nervous system. Hard candies

    may be swallowed and

    become lodged in the throat

    or digestive tract. Artificial

    sweeteners are harmful to ani-

    mals, too.

To help keep pets safe, it

is best to consider the follow-

    ing tips for Halloween.

    1.Keep pets indoors for the

    day. Animals that are fright-

ened may run away or grow

    disoriented and get lost. Also,

you never want your pet to be

    the victim of a Halloween

    prank. Sometimes black cats

    are stolen on Halloween. Dogs

left outside may be at risk for

    teasing and taunting, too.

    2.Dont take dogs trick-or-

    treating. Although you may

    have a calm, well-mannered

dog, the crowds in the neigh-

    borhood may excite mans

    best friend, whose behavior

    might be difficult to predict.

    Also, other animals that get

    loose from homes when the

    doors are opened may provoke

your dog. Its enough to keep

    your eyes on your children,

    never mind being mindful of

    your dog, too!

    3.Skip costumes for pets. You

may think its a cute idea to

    dress your pets in costumes,

but theres a good chance your

pet does not share your enthu-

siasm. It may stress out the

    animal, so avoid pet costumes.

    4.Be mindful of holiday deco-

    rations. Strings of lights, fake

    spider webs and other decora-

tive items can be tripping haz-

    ards for pets, while electronic

    devices could pose a safety

risk. Avoid lit candles in the

    home because cats or dogs

    may knock them over.

5.Keep pets secured in a bed-

    room or another quiet space.

Your dog or cat may try to

    bolt outside every time you

    open the door to trick-or-

    treaters. Instead, keep the

animals in a bedroom or laun-

dry area. Not only will they

    appreciate the quiet, but also

they wont have a chance to

    escape and get lost.

    6.Store collected candy out of

    reach. Pets are inquisitive,

and they may be drawn to the

    sweet smell of candy and

    treats. Candy wrappers and

the candy itself can be haz-

    ardous to pets. Therefore,

    store candy where pets cannot

access it and be sure children

    discard candy wrappers.

    Telecommuting has

    grown more and more

    common over the last

    decade. Thanks in large part

    to advancements in technolo-

gy that make it easier than

    ever before to connect

    remotely with coworkers,

    telecommuting is now some-

    thing more and more compa-

    nies are embracing.

    According to Global

    Workplace Analytics, a con-

    sulting and research firm that

    focus on emerging workplace

    strategies, the total telework

growth from 2011 to 2012, the

    most recent year for which

    statistics are available, was 3.8

    percent. But those figures

dont tell the entire story, as

    the rise of telecommuters

    increased considerably since

    2006, when the number of

    teleworkers grew by 26 per-

    cent over the year prior.

    Telecommuting can pay

    dividends for workers and

    businesses alike. Workers ben-

    efit from telecommuting in a

    variety of ways. Working par-

    ents find telecommuting dras-

tically cuts back on or even

    eliminates childcare costs,

    saving them thousands of dol-

    lars per year. Working from

    home also saves workers vehi-

    cles from the everyday wear

and tear of driving to and from

    work, potentially adding years

    to a vehicles life expectancy.

    Businesses also benefit

    from allowing employees to

    work remotely. Small busi-

    nesses may need less office

space if many of their employ-

    ees work from home, saving

    them substantial amounts of

    money in rent. In addition,

    businesses who allow workers

    to telecommute may not need

to spend as much on comput-

ers and other tools for their

    employees, as many telecom-

    muters use their own personal

    computers when working from

    home.

    While telecommuting

    can benefit employee and

    employer, the success of such

    an arrangement depends

    largely on the employees who

    will be working from home.

    Men and women who work

    from home often find they

    have more freedom at home

    than they did when working

in an office, and how they

handle that freedom will go a

    long way toward determining

    how successful they are at

    telecommuting. The follow-

ing are a handful of strategies

    telecommuters can employ to

    ensure their work-from-home

    experiment is a productive

    success.

    Stick to a schedule.

    Workers who still commute to

    work adhere to a schedule,

    and so should telecommuters.

    Sticking to a schedule will

    allow you to maintain the

    same level of productivity you

    aspired to when working in

the office, and a schedule will

    ensure your personal life does

    not encroach on your profes-

    sional life.

    Let others know your

    schedule. Though youre now

    working from home, your

    schedule likely has not

changed. You may be able to

sleep in a little later because

you no longer have to com-

    mute, but your workday is

    likely still eight hours. Once

    Most men are sur-

    prised to learn

    that they can suf-

    fer from vein con-

    ditions that theythought only af-

fected women. Though most of the

    cosmetic conditions such as spider

    veins, affect mostly women, other

    venous conditions occur in men

    equally.

As many as 15% of men ages

    40-79 suffer from venous disease,

and more than 40% of men in their

    seventies are affected by varicose

veins. They can lead to discol-

    oration, skin ulcers, and bleeding.

Men with venous insufficiencyusually can be seen with bulging

veins in their lower legs. Some

    symptoms may include: Itching, leg

pain, leg fatigue, swelling and heavi-

ness, skin color changes and venous

    ulcers.

    Remember...These are not

    COSMETIC concerns like you think

    or have been told.

    Options for Treatment

    include:

    Sclerotherapy is used commonly

for spider veins. The sclerosing liq-uid acts upon the lining of the vein

to cause it to seal shut, eliminating

the vein completely.Microphlebectomy is a minimally

invasive procedure in which a large

surface of varicose vein is removedthrough a series of miniature inci-

sions that require no stitches.Endovenous laser treatment.

Vascular Laser Therapy is a mini-

    mally-invasive procedure that can

be performed in the office in less

than one hour. In this procedure, a

thin laser fiber is inserted into the

    diseased vein. The physician deliv-

ers laser energy through the fiber,

    causing the vein to close.

    Endovenous Radiofrequency

treatment. EVRF is based onthermocoagulation. Thermocoagu-

lation is the heating of the vein wall

    through radio frequency waves

    which makes the vein coagulate.

The physician will insert a thin

    catheter, delivering a high fre-

    quency impulse through the device

    making the vein coagulate, shrink

and disappear. There is virtually no

pain, bruising, or scaring seen and

    normal activities can be resumed

    within one day.

    These procedure options are

done on an outpatient basis in ourstate-of-the-art vein center.

    you have established your

    schedule, let others in your

    household, whether its a

    spouse, your children or room-

mates, know when you will be

working on a daily basis. This

    reduces the likelihood that

    your housemates will distract

you or walk into your office

while youre on a video chat

    or conference call with col-

    leagues or clients.

    Ask for a work phone.

    Many companies who allow

    employees to telecommute

will provide a phone for such

    workers. This phone is linked

    to the same network workers

use in the office, and its a

    wholly separate line from your

    personal lines at home. Its

    important that telecommuters

    keep a separate phone solely

for work so their personal and

    professional messages do not

get mixed up, which can make

it more difficult for men and

    women to do their jobs.

    Use the technology at

    your disposal. One of the

    ways technology has made it

easier to work from home is

    by providing a number of

ways workers can stay in con-

    stant and instant contact

    with their coworkers. But

    such technology is only use-

    ful if telecommuters make it

    work for them. Video confer-

    encing allows telecommuters

    to conduct face-to-face

    meetings with coworkers,

    while instant messaging is a

valuable tool to stay in touch

    with coworkers who you

    work with directly. Use these

    programs to your advantage,

    and youll notice youre not

    only more productive but

also still able to maintain a

    personal connection with

    your coworkers.

    The scent of freshly

    baked bread can fill a

    home and instantly

    draw the interest of that

    homes inhabitants. Such is

    the case with the following

    recipe for Buttermilk

    Cornbread from Linda

    Collisters Quick Breads

    (Ryland, Peters & Small).

    Buttermilk Cornbread

    Serves 6 to 8

    1 cup fine yellow cornmeal,

    preferably stone-ground

    1 cup unbleached all-purpose

    flour

    1 teaspoons baking powder

    teaspoon baking soda

    teaspoon sea salt

    1 extra-large egg

    4 tablespoons melted butter

    3 tablespoons honey

    1 cup buttermilk

Preheat the oven to 400 F.

    Put the cornmeal, flour,

    baking powder, baking soda,

and salt in a large bowl, and

stir with a wooden spoon until

    thoroughly mixed.

    In a separate bowl, beat

the egg with the melted butter,

    honey and buttermilk. Stir into

the dry ingredients to make a

    thick, smooth batter. Transfer

the mixture to a 9x9 prepared

    pan and spread evenly.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes

    until golden and a toothpick

    inserted into the center comes

out clean. Turn out onto a

    bread board, cut into large

    squares and serve warm.

    Halloween is as much

about candy as it isabout dressing up in

    fun costumes and engaging in

    scare tactics.

    Humans have loved their

    sweets for centuries. Early

    human beings made candy out

of honey by drying it and

    forming a taffy-like confec-

    tion, while many modern

    incarnations of candy involve

    dissolving sugar into water or

milk to form a syrup. Candy isthen made by varying the

    temperature of the syrup and

    the sugar concentration to

    achieve desired textures. The

    word candy is derived from

    the Arabic quandi, meaning

    made of sugar.

    Candy also often refers to

    chocolate bars and other

    treats that people find so

    delectable. Ancient Mayans

and Aztecs were the first toexperiment with the cocoa

    bean, the cornerstone of

chocolate confections, in the1500s. However, their choco-

late drinks were bitter and not

    the sweet delights weve come

    to associate with chocolate. It

    wasnt until the 19th century

    that innovators began mixing

    cocoa with sugar to create

    chocolate bars. Joseph Fry is

    credited with making the first

    chocolate bar in 1847, using

    bittersweet chocolate. Milk

chocolate came later, in 1875,when it was introduced by

    Henry Nestl and Daniel

Peter. Milton Hershey beganproducing sweet chocolate in

    1894.

    Hershey bars, Nestl bars

    and many other original can-

    dies are still in production

    today. Tootsie Rolls and

    Charleston Chews are other

    classic candies still produced.

    Good & Plenty debuted in

    1893, making it the oldest

    branded candy in America.

NECCO Company Waferswere officially branded in

    1901 and are another classic

    treat consumers can still find

in the candy aisle of their

    nearest grocery store.

    Smarties is another

candy thats bound to show up

    in trick-or-treat bags this

    Halloween. Smarties have

    been owned and operated by

    the same family since 1949.

The Ce De Candy Inc. factoryopened up in August 1949 in

    Bloomfield, NJ, and produced

a candy that would not meltin the heat. Smarties are a

    favorite all over North

    America and elsewhere.

When demand is too high for

    the NJ factory, particularly

    around Halloween, Smarties

    are also produced in a

    Canadian factory in Newmar-

    ket, Ontario. Smarties import-

ed to the United States are

    still called Smarties. However,

Smarties sold in Canada areknown as Rockets, as anoth-

    er candy sold in Canada

    already bears the Smarties

    name.

    Halloween wouldnt be

    nearly as sweet without troves

    of candy treasures. Children

are urged to have their candy

    sorted and inspected by par-

ents prior to eating to avoid

    any dangers, such as food

    allergies or tampering.

As the leaves fall off thetrees and greenery

    thins out for the sea-

    son, exposing branches and

    undergrowth along the way,

    homeowners may be tempted

to prune their trees and shrubs. But while autumn pruning may

seem like a good idea, many

gardening experts say it is often

    best for homeowners to wait

    until winter or early spring

    before pruning.Although pruning does

    thin out branches and tame

    spent blooms, which can be

    eyesores, pruning also stimu-

    lates new growth. Pruning in

    the autumn, when plants are

    naturally preparing to go dor-

    mant, can weaken the plants

    considerably. This can compro-

    mise their chances of surviving

    into the next growing season.

Fall temperatures also canbe deceiving. While it may be

warm during the day when the

    sun is shining, temperatures

    can quickly drop overnight.

    Pruning during the warmth of

day, when the sap has risen in

    the plants, may deplete energy

from the plant. When the mer-

cury drops at night, the plant

    can suffer.

If you must spend time in

the yard in the fall, tend to theleaves and debris that have

already fallen to the groundrather than focusing energy on

fall pruning. If you have been

    diligent during the spring and

summer, your shrubs and otherplants likely wont need prun-

ing at this time of year.Wait until winter before

taking out the shears. At this

point, the woody parts of many

plants are dormant and will notbe harmed or primed to grow

by the pruning. Chances areyou wont prune too much as

    well, as chilly temperatures will

    keep you from spending too

    much time outdoors.

    When its time to prune,

    consider these other pointers.

Keep tools clean and in good

working order. You risk injury if

your tools are dull and in poor

    shape overall. Spend time

    sharpening pruners and keep

manual tools oiled and clean.Debris can lodge itself in clip-

pers, making it more difficult to

open and shut them. Wash and

    dry tools after use, especially

    when dealing with diseased

    plants. Otherwise you risk

    spreading disease to healthy

    plants.

    Cut back stems complete-

ly. Its usually a good idea to

    prune branches back to the

    main stem. Leaving a portion

Perhaps because theyare thrust into the

    spotlight so often and

have quite a large amount of

    money at their disposal, peo-

    ple believe that celebrity

    musicians, actors and sports

    figures are invincible. Yet,

just like regular people, celebrities are susceptible to

    the same illnesses as private

    citizens.

    Many well-known wo-

    26/28

    Picture this

    Circa 1998. I had a

    friend who was under

    the impression that

he was a good boss. He

believed he spoke in the right

    tone and treated those under

    him with respect. NOT!

In reality, he was the type

    of guy that would bark

    requests at his secretary. For

    example, when he asked her

to get him a cup of coffee, he

    thought he was being very

polite. But what came out of

his mouth was simply a gruff,

    COFFEE!

    Sometimes we dont see

ourselves as we really are. Its

like we are blinded by visions

    of grandeur. Whether we are

    leading ourselves, our families

or a group of people, this can

have a very negative and last-

    ing impact.

    Think about it

    Have you ever looked

deep into a mirror, past the

    reflection, to the inner you?

    Would you like to? Many

would say no to that question,

but the truth is that if we have

    the courage to face ourselves

so that we see what others see,

    change can happen.

Try this. Ask 2 or 3 peo-

ple who know you very well, and who you can trust to tell

    you the truth, what your

    strengths and weaknesses are

and how you are perceived by

    others. If you have the

courage to do this and listen

    intently- without jumping

down their throat- I think you

might come face to face with a

    new reflection. One that will

put a smile on your face (as

well as the person getting youthe coffee!). Dont have any-

one you can trust? Well, thats

    something else to think about.
