    Gym memberships are

    trite, expensive and

    often purchased with

    well-intended, but blind

    ambition. This leaves no one

to wonder why 85% of the

    population does not engage in

    a regular fitness routine.

    Something is not working.

    Why are people purchasing

    gym memberships, going hard

core for a few weeks and then

    dropping out, dejected and

    disappointed in themselves.

    Two words: accountability

    and community. Despite the

    ample selection of programs

    and classes at what has

    become a buffet selection of

    gyms, these two core things

    are lacking disabling folks

    from being successful in their

    fitness journey.

    This is what Dr. Glenn

Foss wants to offer to that

    85%. Tailored programs,

    human connection, and a

    community of encouragement

    with the introduction of

    Advanced Fitness & Wellness

    Center. Having been in the

    business of physical rehabili-

    tation and working with all

    levels of sport related injuries,

Dr. Foss felt there was never

    an adequate “step down” pro-

    gram for individuals following

    their physical rehabilitation.

    These individuals need guid-

    ance in subsequent exercise

    and activity to support the

    strengthening and condition-

    ing from their rehab program.

    But now with their newly

    built facility adjunct to

    Advanced Sports Medicine,

    It’s a great question isn’t it,

    but, the answer is even

better, at least I believe so

and I’ll tell you why. Folks,

I’m in my 54th year and there

    are more years behind me

than in front of me, especially

working and earning years;this means the closer I get to

    retirement, the more interest-

ed I become in my retirement

    portfolio and you should too.

Certainly, I do not mean cre-

    ating the retirement portfolio

    that you should have started

years ago, no, I mean prepar-

    ing to depend on one!

    When you hang-up your

hat for the last time at your

job, you will be dependent on

    the portfolio that you con-

    structed over the last three

    decades to provide for your

wife and yourself. In my case,

    hopefully there will be some

    Social Security left for my

wife and I, but, it will be of lit-

    tle consequence should it be

    curtailed or eliminated before

I even get the first check atmy age of 67. I have always

    poked fun at Social Security,

even since my very first pay-

check at 14 years of age. Back

then, Sy Weiner, the owner of

    Singer’s Department Store in

    Pompton Lakes, promised me

I was being paid $2.35 an

    hour, minimum wage at the

time. After school I would put

in my time emptying the trash

    bins, stocking shelves, vacu-

    uming the carpeting and dust-

    ing/mopping the floors. With

    great anticipation I tore open

    the envelope containing the

first paycheck and stub of my

    working life after working 10

hours that week. Much to my

surprise, the check was a lot

less than the $23.50 that waspromised to me, so this young

14 year old rushed into the

    owner’s office to inform him

    of a math calculation error.

Sy, informed me of the follow-

    ing: “Mark, those letters on

    the stub indicate withdrawals

    from your check before you

    receive the “net dollars”. First

is Fed-With, which is for fed-

eral income tax and there is

    another deduction for NJ

income tax too. Next is SUI

and that is for state unemploy-

    ment insurance and this one

called FICA is for your retire-

    ment,” he said firmly. “Every

    pay period, the government

takes out of your pay a portion

that goes into an account with

your name and number on it,

to be returned to you when

you are 65 years old, this iscalled Social Security!”

    Sy, bless his heart, didn’t

know or realize that in that

    one statement defining Social

    Security, he was doubly

    wrong! The first misnomer

was that my money was going

    into an account with my

name and number on it, when

actually it was being paid to

    current retirees who were col-

    lecting from the system. The

second error was that I was

    going to get my retirement

share at age 65. The govern-

    ment has now determined

    that my “FRA” full retirement

age is now 67 and there is no

guarantee of that at all! What

remains to be seen is if I ever

receive a Social Securitycheck at all! I believe that

    certain people will be ren-

    dered ineligible due to their

    individual financial success;

    meaning a new government

    instituted asset and means

    test, where a committee will

    be created to determine if

    your contribution to FICA

will be changed to a donation

instead, for the benefit of the

    “greater good.” That would be

    proof of the third paycheck

    misinformation espoused to

    me back in 1975. It wasn’t Sy’s

fault or any employer’s for that

    matter, how could they have

    known or predicted the

    future. But, the whole story

sounded a little fishy to me,

even then, so I did something

    about it.

I decided not to rely or

    depend on Social Security

even though I was forced to

contribute to it. Instead, I was

    determined to consider my

Social Security check, if I ever

got one, as gravy or icing on

the cake. I adopted the finan-

cial attitude, “If It Is to Be, It’s

    Up to Me!” And therefore

    determined that my retire-

    ment portfolio possess all of

    the answers in the Answer

    title of today’s column:

    Growth – Income – Liquidity

    – Tax-Advantages + Safety! I

    asked the question of myself

and answered it as it is writ-

    ten; my retirement portfolio

required all of these featureswhen creating it, adding to it,

    and eventually when with-

    drawing from it.

This leads me to a few

    questions. 1. Do you agree

with me? 2. Does your need

    for retirement funds and what

    they must accomplish when

    you hang-up your working hat

for the last time, require the

    same attributes as indicated

on this list? 3. Lastly, is your

    retirement portfolio invested

    properly with these require-

    ments included? 4. Not sure,

    need another opinion, don’t

    think so, not enough confi-

dence in the allocation or per-

    haps your current advisor or

    your own investing efforts? If

there is some doubt, even the

slightest degree, APG repre-sentatives, like myself, charge

no fees to see! No American

    Prosperity Group office will

charge you to take a look, give

you our opinion of your cur-

    rent financial situation, and

    determine your preparedness

    for the next market correc-

tion, crash or if we see any

    deficiencies in your alloca-

    tions. We might even con-

    gratulate you or your current

advisor for a job well done,

    but, you won’t know unless

you contact us for a no fee

and I encourage you to take

    Summer is a season with

    many activities taking

    place outdoors in the

    warm temperatures and long

    days. As people venture out-

    side to enjoy their favorite

    summer pastime, extremely

    high temperatures can affect

the body’s ability to keep cool.

    Persons over age 65 particu-

larly are at high risk for suffer-

    ing a heat-related illness.

    Thus it is especially important

for senior citizens to keep cool

in the summer heat. Here are

    some ways how:

    1. Seek an air-conditioned

    environment: If your home is

    not air conditioned, visit an

    air-conditioned shopping

    mall, movie theater or public

    library to cool off.

    2. Plan outdoor activities in

the morning when it is cooler:

    It is important to minimize

direct exposure to the sun as

    much as possible. Therefore, all

    outdoor activities should be

    planned for early mornings

when it is cooler and the sun is

less harsh. As much as possible,

    use the shaded areas under

    trees or covered porches.

    3. Take a cool shower, bath,

or sponge bath: Heat stroke is

    the most serious heat-related

    illness and occurs when the

    body becomes unable to con-

    trol its temperature. When

    the body’s temperature rises

too fast, the body loses its

ability to sweat and is unable

to cool down. The most relax-

ing way to cool down your

body’s temperature is to take a

nice long cool shower or bath.

    4. Stay hydrated: Seniors

    should avoid caffeine and

    alcoholic beverages as much

    as possible as they accelerate

    dehydration. Drinking plain

water is great, but may not be

adequate as the body also loses

    sodium and potassium salts

    through sweating. Popular

    sports drinks taste great and

are an effective way to replen-

ish the body’s loss of sodium.

    5. Dress appropriately:

    Everyone, especially seniors,

    should wear light colored,

    loose fitting, cool clothing

    (preferably cotton) and use

    head coverings like hats or

caps. As seniors’ skin is sensi-

tive they should use high SPF

    sun blocks (30+) and avoid

direct sun as much as possible

    by seeking out shaded spots.

    provides ongoing provisions

    of non-perishable food and

    other basic necessities for

    Wayne residents who are in

    need.

    The WIN food pantry

    supplies are critically low and

    since children will be home

for the summer and have no

    access to school lunch, dona-

    Looking to reduce your

    2015 income taxes?

    Consider these summer-

    time strategies.

    Take a credit for summer

day care. If you have one or

    more children under age 13,

    your costs of in-home child-

care, a day care facility, orsending the kids to day camp

may qualify for the Child and

    Dependent Care Tax Credit.

The costs must be incurred to

    enable you (and your spouse,

if you file jointly) to work or

look for work and you gener-

    ally must report some earned

    income. Payments to your

    spouse, your dependent, or

your child who is under age19 at the end of the year

    aren’t eligible. Overnight

    camps and summer school

    tutoring won’t qualify either.

    The credit can equal up

    to 35% of qualifying expens-

    es, depending on your

    income. Total expenses are

    limited to $3,000 for one

child and $6,000 for two or

    more.Combine business with

    pleasure. Add vacation days

to a summer business trip, and

    bring your family along. You

can deduct most of your own

    (but not your families’) unre-

    imbursed costs, such as airfare

and your share of meals and

    lodging during the business

    portion of your trip.

Put your kids to work. If you own a business, give your

    children a summer job. You

can deduct their wages, and if

    you’re a sole proprietor, you

    needn’t withhold social secu-

rity or Medicare taxes as long

as your kids are under 18.

They can even use their earn-

ings to set up an IRA.

    Clean out your garage

    and take a deduction. Donate

    your excess property to a

    qualifying charity and deduct

the fair market value. Be sure

to get a receipt and check the

    documentation rules for high-

    value items.

    summer tax-cutting ideas.

    Extreme heat can be

    unpleasant for anyone,

    and pets are no excep-

tion. While it’s easy for men

and women to detect if their

    bodies are responding nega-

    tively to heat, those warning

signs may not be so prevalent

in pets, who may suffer in

    silence as the mercury contin-

    ues to rise.

    Pet owners must pay spe-

cial attention to their pets on

    hot days, which the Humane

    Society of the United States

    notes can be both uncomfort-

able and dangerous for pets. In

an effort to help pet owners

    protect their pets from the

    summer heat, the HSUS offers

    the following tips topet owners

who want to keep their pets

    cool and safe this summer.

    Don’t leave pets in a

    parked car. The temperature

    inside a vehicle can quickly

    approach dangerous levels on

hot days, so pet owners should

    never leave theirpets in parked

cars, even if they leave the air

conditioning on and theengine running. The HSUS

notes that on an 85-degree day,

    temperatures inside cars with

    slightly cracked windows can

reach 102 degrees in as little as

    10 minutes. Rather than taking

pets with you on car trips, leave

them at home inside a comfort-

    ably air conditioned room

    where they won’t be vulnerable

    to rising temperatures.

    Change pet’s exercise reg-

    imen. Pet owners who make

sure their pets get daily exercise

    should change such routines

    when temperatures are on the

    rise. Midday walks or jogs

    should be switched to evenings

    or early mornings, when tem-

peratures tend to be at their

    most moderate. In addition, cut

back on the time spent exercis-

ing, as pets may have trouble

    breathing on hot days. When

taking your dog for a jog or a

run in the summertime, do so

    on the grass, avoiding asphalt,

as hot asphalt can do signifi-

cant damage to your pet’s paws.

    Be mindful of your breed.

    Dog owners should recognize

    that certain dogs can handle

    the heat better than others.

Short-nosed breeds have aharder time in extreme heat

    because their shorter airways

don’t allow as much time for

the air they breathe in to cool

as dogs with longer noses. In

    addition, the HSUS points out

    that dogs with white-colored

    ears are more susceptible to

    skin cancer than other dogs,

    making it imperative that own-

ers of such dogs reduce their

exposure to the sun on hot days

when the UV index is especial-

    ly dangerous.

    Let dogs inside.

    Doghouses might not be as

    prevalent as they once were,

but many owners still keep dog-houses in their backyards so

    their four-legged friends have a

place to relax outdoors on lazy

    afternoons. But doghouses can

be similar to parked cars on

    especially hot days, making ris-

    ing temperatures feel even hot-

ter. Let dogs hang out inside in

an air conditioned room on hot

days to reduce their risk of

    heatstroke.

Learn to recognize thesigns of heatstroke. Pets suf-

    fering from heatstroke will

    exhibit certain symptoms, and

pet owners who learn to rec-

    ognize those symptoms can do

    something about them before

    it’s too late. Heavy panting,

    glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat,

    difficulty breathing, excessive

    thirst, and lack of coordina-

tion are just a few potential

indicators that a pet is suffer-ing from heatstroke. Animals

that are very old, very young,

    overweight, and unaccus-

    tomed to prolonged exercise,

as well as those who have

    heart or respiratory condi-

    tions, are especially suscepti-

    ble to heatstroke. Learn more

    about pets and heatstroke at

    Extreme heat can be dan-

gerous to pets, who often suffer

    in silence when dealing with

the consequences of extremeheat. Pet owners who take cer-

    tain precautions and learn to

recognize signs of a pet strug-

gling with heat can better pro-

    tect their animals from suc-

    cumbing to rising tempera-

    tures.

Few home improve-ments can transform a

    home more than the

    installation of new siding.

    Replacing siding can be a

    costly venture, but the right

    siding will maintain its

appeal for years to come.Updated siding can

    improve home’s energy value

by enabling owners to save on

    heating and cooling costs. A

new design and color also can

    improve a home’s property

value and set it apartfrom neighboring properties.

    According to the Professional

    Builder’s Home Exteriors

    Survey, exterior design and

materials used are a top priori-

    ty for new home buyers.

Project costs depend onthe size of the home as well as

    which siding material home-

    owners choose. Considering

new siding is a major renova-

tion, it pays to get the job

    done right.

    Choose a qualified contractor

It is important for con-sumers to do their research

when it comes to siding mate-

    rials and contractors. A con-

    tractor who takes shortcuts or

    improperly installs the siding

    may void a manufacturer’s

    warranty. Always ask family

    members and friends for rec-

    ommendations before choos-

    ing a contractor, and check

out each prospective contrac-tor’s work for yourself.

    Interview more than one con-

    tractor and compare both

their costs and what they offer.

Ask plenty of questions of the

    contractors, and avoid those

    who try hard-sell methods.

    Questionable contractors may

try strategies like a promise of a

considerable discount if you“act now” or scare tactics that

your home is unsafe in its pres-

    ent condition.

    Be sure the contractor

    carries general liability insur-

ance as well as workers’ com-

    pensation insurance for their

subcontractors. Ask for alicense number as well and ver-

    ify its accuracy.

    Select a durable material

    Siding comes in all types

of materials - from wood to

plastic to fiber cement - but

vinyl is among the most popu-

lar due to cost and availability.Research how well particular

brands of siding stand up to

    conditions and which are the

least likely to crack, warp or

    discolor. Find this information

    from online reviews or through

    consumer advocacy groups.

Also remember, vinyl andother synthetic materials have

    improved and can now mimic

the look of many other materi-

als for a fraction of the cost.

    Calculate how much you need

    Before you price out sid-

    ing with contractors, estimate

how much you will need for

    your house. Consumer Reports

    suggests multiplying the height

times the width of each rectan-

gular section of your house infeet, going by what you can

    measure from the ground, to

    determine their areas. Multiply

    the approximate height and

width of gables and other trian-

    gular surfaces and divide each

total by two. Then add all the

totals. To allow for waste, don’t

    Recently, Porta’s Karate

    and Kobudo Academy

    of Pompton Lakes and

Wayne held a Black Belt test-

ing for its students. After the

    candidates successfully com-

    pleted an extensive black belt

    training program, a formal test

    using international standards

    was performed. Testing

    included knowledge of martial

    arts history and culture and

    concluded with each candi-

    date performing practical

    applications of martial arts

techniques in a variety of self-

    defense situations.

    After completion of test-

    ing, a promotion ceremony and

    celebration party for family and

    friends was held at Porta’s

    Academy headquarters at 306

    Wanaque Avenue, Pompton

    Lakes. The black belt awards

    were presented by Sensei John

Porta, a ninth degree black belt

    and senior United States repre-

    sentative for the Okinawan

    Goju-Ryu Shobukan Karate-

    Do organization of Okinawa,

     Japan. Receiving awards were

     Jared Egan, Sho-Dan-Ho, and

    Steve Vogt, Sho-dan (Ist

    degree).

     Jared Egan and Steve

    Vogt were also inducted into

    Porta’s Karate Academy’s

    national martial arts demon-

    stration team which is sched-

    uled to perform both locally

    and nationally throughout the

    coming year. For more informa-
