    Apetition to push the

    federal government toaddress Passaic River

    Basin flooding has passed the

    5,000 signature mark and con-

    tinues to gain support from

    local residents and people from

    around the country who

    acknowledge that severe flood-

ing of the Passaic River Basin

    deserves federal funding of a

    long-term solution.

    Assemblyman Scott T.

Rumana (40th District,Passaic, Bergen, Essex, and

    Morris) launched the on-line

    petition drive (www.floodpeti-

    tion.com) that encourages the

    federal government to priori-

tize the Passaic River Basin in

    New Jersey as a presidential

priority in the Fiscal Year 2013

    budget request to Congress

with the late AssemblymanAlex DeCroce. Assemblyman

    DeCroces widow Betty Lou

    was recently sworn-in as the

    Assemblywoman representing

    her late husbands former

    District, which encompasses

    areas affected by flooding. She

    has committed to continuing

    her husbands efforts to bring

    real solutions to thousands of

    residents and businesses within

the Passaic River Basin. The federal government

    needs to make solving the

    chronic flooding of the Passaic

    River Basin a priority, said

    Rumana, who acknowledges

    President Obamas inclusion of

$1 million in his FY 2013 budg-

    et. I applaud the administra-

    tion for making Passaic River

    Basin flood control a

Presidential priority. I amhopeful that this will result in

    an acceleration to achieve a

project that will once and for

    all solve our flooding prob-

lems. To that end, we need to

keep the pressure on the feder-

    al government.

    Plans are underway to cre-

ate a video to accompany an

email blast. If you have any

photos or video from the latestflood or would like more infor-

mation on the petition or to

    receive a paper petition, please

Waiting to walk Why isnt my child walking yet? By Gena Livingston PT

    What a thrilling time

    for parents watch-

    ing their baby tak-

    ing their first tentative steps.

Sure its cute when they beginto roll, sit up and crawl, but

    walking is different. The baby

is now able to venture out and

    explore their world. What an

    exciting and daunting time for

    new parents when the baby

    proofing must commence.

When a baby is late with a

milestone like walking it can be

difficult to tell whether it is ajustified concern or just a mat-

ter of time before they will start

    taking steps.

    Babies typically acquire

    motor skills in a predictable

sequence, but the timing of the

    attainment of those skills may

    vary widely. Many factors affect

the timing of first steps from

heredity to body size. Abouthalf of all babies are walking by

    their first birthday, but most

    pediatricians do not consider a

child to be a late walker until

    they are 15 months old.

    Walking later than 15 months

is not very uncommon; one in

    ten children takes their first

    steps between 15 and 18

months. Regardless of how oldyour baby is catching a problem

as early as possible offers the

    best chance for improvement.

    Listed below are several red

flags that may signal an early

    motor problem that can cause

    late walking:

Your baby does not have a

    large movement repertoire.

    Children that are not moving

and may just stay in a sitting

position, or may only roll to gettheir toys and are beyond the

age at which they should have

begun to crawl or pull up to

    stand, may have an underlying

    issue that should be addressed.

This type of child that is not

crawling or pulling up to stand

    probably wont be walking in

the near future and should be

evaluated by a professional. The baby appears to be

    lazy and uninterested in walk-

    ing. Babies are not lazy.

    Sometimes they may appear

    uninterested in one area of

    development when they are

    refining their skills in another.

For example, a baby who has

just had a big burst in language

    may be working on refining

    these skills leaving their motor

skills on the back burner. When the language improves

the toddler will most likely pay

    more attention to the motor

skills. On the other hand, a

child may appear to have a lack

of interest in walking, but the

    infant may be physically unable

to do so and may not have the

    necessary strength to perform.

    A child may require interven-

    tion to appropriately strength-

en the necessary muscles uti-lized for walking.

The baby is not only a late

    walker, but never crawled and

scooted on his bottom to get

    As introduced in the

    last issue of Life and

    Leisure, readers are

    encouraged to call, mail, fax

or email their financial ques-tions to me for a response, so

    everyone can benefit from the

    answers. Questions must

    include the name and contact

    information of the reader, yet

    may remain anonymous in the

    paper. This weeks first two

    questions are:

    Dear Mark: My husband

and I are 40 something with

two girls ages 3 and 5. We feel

like we are doing everythingright, contributing monthly to

    529s ($200 per child), auto-

    matically contributing to my

    husband's 401k and maxing

    out his company match. We

    refinanced our mortgage down

to 4%, which paid for itself in

7 months. We carry no credit

card debt, though we use them

    to pay for EVERYTHING we

can, but we pay them off each

month. Our only other debt isone car payment, our mort-

gage and a student loan pay-

    ment of $200/mos. Despite

being what we feel is finan-

    cially responsible (we can

    account for every dollar spent

in the past 10 years!) we are

    anxious about paying for col-

    lege, having enough for retire-

    ment and knowing the right

amount of life insurance weshould be carrying on each of

us. Any help in how we can

    work towards ensuring our

    financial future and that of

    our children's is secure would

    be appreciated. Carolyn E.

    Dear Carolyn: Thank

you for writing, what a pleas-

    ure to read your financial

report card; I grade you and

your husband an A. Not an

A+ though, because of the529 plans which, as Ive writ-

ten before, I do not like them

at all. In concept and theory

they sound good, 2 kids and

    the abhorrent future price of

college, the 529 plan created a

    vehicle to accumulate wealth

    for that purpose. The problem

is, the success you will enjoy

in the plan will hurt or hinder

    the availability for financial

aid packages available to youfor college when the girls

apply. 529 assets are part of

    the EFC, Expected Family

    Contribution. There is a bet-

    ter way that will accomplish

    the goal of accumulating capi-

tal for college and at the same

    time, maximize your aid eligi-

    bility, in other words, have

your cake and eat it to.

    Interestingly, the solution ties

into your second question, ample life insurance coverage

for you and your spouse. To

elaborate, I will need a bit

    more information. In this way

I can do some work for you

    and create some fascinating

    proposals and illustrations

    that will completely satisfy all

    of your requirements.

    The answer for Carolyn

lies in the proper life insur-ance for her and her husband.

    Interestingly, life insurance

cash values are not factored in

    the EFC formula; yet, their

cash value may be accessed for

    college tuition needs, tax-free,

    if removed from the policy

    properly. Further, the cash

    value accumulations may be

linked to a stock market index

like the S+P 500 where, by

formula, can only grow with-out the possibility of negative

    returns from crashes and cor-

    rections. Therefore, Carolyn

and her husband can use the

same money to provide for the

    proper life insurance protec-

    tion today, a supplemental

    tuition reimbursement plan in

    13 and 15 years respectively

    and ultimately a tax-advan-

    taged retirement plan at their

age 67, to complement theirSocial Security benefits all at

    M

    ediators have been

    around for a long

time, but recentlythey have increasingly taken up

    the burden of dispute resolu-

tion, in nearly every sector of

the law. It use to be that if you

wanted to get a divorce, you

hired a lawyer, and settled the

    complaint in the courtroom.

    After many long drawn out

    adversarial meetings, which

cost lots of time and money, the

    disputing parties usually came

to a conclusion on the steps ofthe courthouse on the day of

    the hearing.

    A mediator is a neutral

    third party observer who does

not take sides, but tries to help

both parties come to an agree-

ment before they call in the

    lawyers thus avoiding the

    courts, the emotional fallout,

    and especially the legal fees.

    Mediators are a diverse set

of individuals they may beteachers, psychotherapists,

    businessmen, retired judges and

    yes even lawyers. They all

    bring their expertise to the

negotiation table. The cost ofmediation services vary from

mediator to mediator, but if you

talked to a person who went

    through a mediated divorce,

they will tell you that it is

    cheaper and quicker than going

    through legal proceedings.

    All adversarial proceed-

    ings have negative outcomes.

They create stress; they leaveone or both parties feeling

bruised or battered. If there are

    children involved, they create

    difficult situations that affect

the children in a negative way

both at home or in school, and

    E

    rgonomics is the study of

    the relationship between

    people and their work-

    place. Its fundamental purpose

is to improve the work environ-

ment in order to reduce unnec-

essary stress and strain on the

    human body. Ergonomics has

now come to include not only

    the workplace, but any envi-

ronment where one may do a

task or activity: the home, the

    workshop, driving the car, and

    so on. Whatever environment

one is in, being aware of body

    positioning and continually

    seeking to improve the design

    of the environment to mini-

mize stress and strain on the

body will help to ensure a

    healthy spine.

    The following are some

    key points to remember when

    learning to "think ergonomi-

    cally":

    Whenever possible, posi-

tion your environment toreduce strain on your body

    rather than straining your body

    to accommodate the environ-

ment. For example, if you work

at a desk, do not place heavy

    objects that you regularly use

(like heavy files or books) in

the drawer on the side of the

desk. In order to get them you

are forced to bend and twist at

    the same time, a motion

    responsible for many back dis-

    orders. To avoid chronic neck

    and upper back problems, posi-

    tion computer and T.V. moni-

tors so that, when sitting nor-mally, you are not forced to

    look down. Monitor and adjust

    your environment to ensure

    your body positioning and

    motions are balanced.

    Be "posturally aware" at

all times. Posture is vital to

    spinal well-being and health in

    general. Think optimum, bal-

anced posture as it relates to

    everything you do. Question

    how you can improve your

    work or leisure environment so

    that optimum posture can be

    best maintained. For example,

    does your environment allow

    you to "think tall"?

    Design your environment

so that your three basic spinal

    curves are maintained as close

    to normal as possible. While

you are sitting or standing, doesyour environment force you to

    slouch, rounding your mid-

    Old age happens. Our

    dogs are no excep-

    tion. As our dogs

    become senior citizens, their

    physical and mental capabili-

    ties change and their needs

    change too. Being aware of

    these changes and knowing

what to expect will help your

    pets golden years be happy

    and comfortable.

    Some common changes

that you may expect to see in

your senior dog are: loss of

    hearing or vision, decreased

    activity and/or weight gain,

changes in skin or fur, dental

    disease, more sensitive stom-

    ach, lumps and bumps, or

    even dementia. These

    changes dont happen at the

same time for all dogs because

    in general, smaller breeds live

    longer than larger dogs. A

good rule of thumb is that, on

average, a dog is considered a

senior at 7 years of age.

    Senior dogs may act dif-

    ferently and may require dif-

ferent care but age is not a dis-

    ease. These dogs arent lost

    causes and minimal effort can

add years to their lives. The

main focus should be on pre-

    vention. Whenever possible,

it is better and less costly to

    prevent a problem from occur-

ring, rather than wait for a

    problem to develop. Detecting

    diseases in their early stages

    greatly improves the out-

    come. Advancements in vet-

    erinary medicine have kept

    our pets alive longer, healthier

and happier. If there is a prob-

    lem with your dog, don't

    assume its just because he/she

is old, and nothing can be

    done. With the appropriate

    treatment, which can be sim-

    ple and non-invasive, many

    conditions can improve.

    Geriatric care for your

    dog and prevention begins

with routine visits to your vet-

    erinarian. Most pets visit

    their veterinarian once a year

    but it is recommended that

senior pets be seen every 6

    months. Mainly because dogs

    age approximately seven times

faster than us and early detec-

tion of problems is key. Your

    veterinarian may do the fol-

    lowing to assess and maintain

a healthy senior dog: take a

    thorough medical history not-

    ing changes in behavior and

    physical abilities, a complete

    physical examination, early

    detection blood work and uri-

    nalysis, aspiration of any new

    lumps or bumps, x-rays, glau-

    coma checks and blood pres-

    sure checks.

    Based on the veterinari-

    ans findings, treatment

options and care can be dis-

    cussed. One of the most

    important aspects is nutri-

tion. In general, a high quali-

    ty senior food is recommended

once your dog reaches 7 years

of age but there may be very

    individual nutritional needs.

The best food to feed depends

    on the specific problems or

    nutritional requirements of

    the individual animal. For

    instance, obesity is a very

    common problem of older ani-

    mals and will shorten their

    lifespan. A lower calo-

    rie/higher fiber diet

    would be recommend-

    ed for these dogs.

    Other diets would be

    advised for dogs with

    GI disorders, kidney or

    liver disease, arthritis,

    skin problems, etc.

    Home care is also essen-

    tial. Close observation of any

    changes in mobility, drinking,

    eating, etc should be noted

    and reported to your veteri-

    narian early. Potential prob-

    lems may also be uncovered

by getting your hands on your

    pet to inspect them periodi-

    cally.

    Feed a good quality dog

    food that is appropriate for

    your dog's specific needs. Do

not allow your pet to gain

    excessive weight which is very

    common when your senior

    dogs metabolism slows down

    and they dont exercise as

    much. It can make them

    more prone to arthritis, heart

    disease and diabetes. Follow

    your veterinarian's recom-

    mendations as to exercise,

    nutrition and any medications

    that may be needed.

    Our senior dogs may not

be able to do what they used

to but with a little prevention

    and early detection they can

still live a happy, fulfilling life

    and still be wonderful com-

    panions to us.

If you're kept awake at night

    by someone who snores,

    you're not alone. Its esti-

    mated that 70 million

    Americans snore; and, it

    becomes more common as we

age by age 60, more than

    half of adults snore.

    The log-sawing vibrations

are often the result of air trying

    to move through narrowed or

    floppy, soft passages in the

    mouth, throat and nose. Other

times, the air is obstructed by

    anatomical abnormalities, such

    as over-sized tonsils or uvula

    that punching-bag like thing

that hangs in the back of the

    throat.

    Ramtin Kassir, M.D., an

ear, nose and throat doctor and

    Chairman of the Department

    of Otolaryngology at St.

    Josephs Wayne Hospital in

Wayne, NJ, says lots of patients

come into his office at the urg-

    ing of their partners. They

    report being "kicked out" of

    their bedrooms for their loud

    snoring.

    Many men don't even

    realize they're doing it, Kassir

says. And, yes, men are twice as

    likely as women to snore.

    "The reason men are

    affected more than women is

    likely due to fat distribution.

When men gain weight, it is

usually in the neck, upper torso

    and abdomen," he says. "On

    the other hand, women usually

gain weight in the hips and

    thighs.

Fat in the neck area can

    constrict airway passages and

    lead to increased snoring. And,

as we age, the soft tissue inside

the mouth and palate can sag,

    just as wrinkles develop with

    aging skin.

    HOME REMEDIES

    Weight Loss and Sleep

    Position

Weight loss is one of the

    most important elements in the

    treatment of sleep apnea.

Sleeping on your side and ele-

vating the head with an extra

    pillow "may help prevent col-

lapsing in the back of the

    throat," says Kassir.

    Avoiding Alcohol

    Alcohol and sedatives can

relax the palate of your mouth

    and decrease the opening in

the throat, which leads to snor-

    ing.

    "I tell people to avoid

alcohol for the three to four

hours before going to bed," says

    Kassir.

    the same time! Thank you

    Carolyn for your question,

    additional information is

already on its way to you.

    Our next question comes

from Bruce M, a high school

    teacher in Wayne:

    Dear Mark: Why would a

    person ever have a Variable

    Annuity inside a 403(b)? As

    someone who deals in annu-

ities I am hoping you will have

    an interesting take on this

    issue. Thanks, Bruce

    Dear Bruce: Your ques-

tion is an excellent one and

    interesting at the same time,

    the 403(b) industry was

    devoted exclusively to vari-

    able annuities in the begin-

    ning of their introduction to

    the investment community for

    those people looking for equi-

    ties (stocks or stock mutual

    fund like alternatives). The

    biggest difference with a vari-

able annuity is the death ben-

    efit feature that protected the

    value from market losses at

    the death of the annuitant.

Another name for a 403(b) is

    a tax-sheltered annuity or

    TSA. TSAs are available to

    teachers as well as hospital

    workers and not for profit

    organizations as their retire-

    ment plan of preference and

    all annuity types are available

as a TSA to include tradition-

    al fixed, fixed indexed and

    variable annuities.

    Bruce, I believe your

    underlying question is: Is their

value in rolling over or trans-

    ferring an employer sponsored

    403(b) into an IRA variable

    annuity where they both pro-

    vide income tax-deferral any-

    way?

    The answer is absolutely

yes! In addition to a death

benefit VAs also offer a liv-

    ing benefit rider (LBR). This

    feature, unavailable in most

    TSA versions, would provide

    immediate upgrades and

    incentives for the partici-

    pant. With different nuances

    from each issuing carrier and

    product, its important to

check the fine print to secure

the best benefits in line with

    the purchasers individual

    goals and objectives. The

    over-the-counter deconges-

    tants or breathing strips that

adhere to your nose could help.

"There can be a narrowing or a

    collapse in your nose, and

    [breathing strips] can keep that

area open, but if you have a

    septal deviation or nasal polyps,

they need to be addressed, says

    Kassir.

    When Snoring Turns

    Dangerous

    Sometimes, snoring can

be a sign of sleep apnea, a

    potentially serious disorder in

    which breathing repeatedly

stops and starts. Sleep apnea is

    more common in overweight

    people, though normal weight

    people can also develop it.

    For someone who is

    already prone to sleep apnea,

    weight gain can increase the

risk, says Kassir. Fat "pads" can

constrict the airway and lead to

snoring, or in cases of sleep

    apnea, a complete collapse of

    the airway.

    Obstructive sleep apnea

    increases the chances of stroke,

    heart attack, and high blood

    pressure. A few studies have

    also found an association

    between snoring and higher

    rates of cardio-vascular risk fac-

    tors including high-blood pres-

    sure.

    "The important thing is to

do a take home sleep study to

find out if you have sleep apnea

    in addition to just snoring,

    says Kassir.

    When Is Surgery

    Recommended?

    Doctor Kassir recom-

    mends surgery when anatomi-

    cal problems are causing exces-

    sive snoring.

    The Nose

    For example, some people

    have a deviated septum, which

is when the thin wall that sep-

arates the right and left side of

your nose is displaced to one

    side. When a deviated septum

is severe, it can block one side

of your nose and reduce airflow.

    ENTs also perform surger-

ies on people who have over-

    sized "turbinates," or bumps on

    the inside the nose.

    "These bumps or shelves

help warm and clean the air"

says Kassir, "but if they're big or

    become enlarged they can

    crowd the nasal cavity."

    The surgery shaves the

bone in the nose down to a

    normal size. After the surgery,

    the reduced turbinate ridges

open up space so air can move

    through unobstructed.

    The Mouth And Throat

    The New Pillar Procedure

    involves the placement of three

    tiny woven implants, which are

    helps to reduce or prevent

blockages of the airway - effec-

    tively treating sleep apnea and

    substantially reducing the

severity of snoring in most indi-

    viduals.

in Passaic County, a team of

    dedicated volunteers represent-

    ing several area congregations

of various faiths have formed a

    nonprofit organization serving

    homeless children and their

    families in Passaic County.

    This organization, Family

    Promise of Passaic County

(FPPC), is an Affiliate of the

    national organization Family

    Promise, based in Summit, NJ.

    Currently, Family Promise has

171 Affiliates in 41. The mis-

    sion of Family Promise of

    Passaic County is to provide

    temporary shelter, meals, and

    support, utilizing existing com-

    munity resources, local faith

    based communities and volun-

    teers. Family Promise is dedi-

    cated to keeping families

    together, unlike other programs

    for the homeless. PREAKNESS

    REFORMED HAS SIGNED

ON TO BE PART OF THIS

    WORTHY CAUSE. Vol-

    unteers and additional congre-

    gational support is greatly need-

ed as Family Promise of Passaic

    County moves closer towards

    its goal of serving homeless

families. To meet this need, pre-

    senters will outline how Family

    Toys that encourage

    physical fitness are a

    great way to keep your

    children fit, active and hav-

    ing fun all year-round.

    Therefore, giving the right

    activity-gift will not only

ensure your kids have fun, but

    will also stay healthy without

    even realizing it.

    What is an activity-toy?

    One of the most popular

    activity gifts is the ride-on-

    toy. Aside from being fun,

    ride-on-toys offer many addi-

    tional benefits, such as devel-

oping a sense of balance and

    coordination, and make a big

    contribution to a child's over-

    all physical fitness. This year,

take a look at the PlasmaCar

    by Plasmart Inc. It's a

    mechanical marvel that can

be driven on any flat surface,

    indoors and outdoors, and is

    powered solely by kid-power.

    This attractive vehicle is a

fun way for kids to ride

    around the neighborhood,

keep their bodies fit, and have

fun at the same time. It

    requires no batteries or fuel,

    just the occasional cookie or

    two for the driver.

    What makes a good

    outdoor gift?

    Outdoor toys need to be

well made. Not only do they

need to stand-up to rough and

    tumble kid treatment, they

need to be able to survive all

    types of weather. Outdoor

    toys should also have rounded

    corners to help prevent

scrapes and cuts that go hand-

    in-hand with outdoor fun.

    Makers of the PlasmaCar say

    it's highly durable and can

handle a load of up to 100 kg

(220 lbs) on a smooth, flat

surface, and 55 kg (120 lbs)

on a rough, flat surface. Not

only will it handle the daily

abuse at the hands of your

    children, it's so durable that

parents can have fun riding it,

    too. The colour is highly

appealing to kids -- and with

    its rounded curves, seat and

    steering wheel, this design

    will help reduce summer

    bumps and bruises.

    It's the season for spring

    cleaning, and homeowners

no doubt have a slew of

projects on tap in the weeks to

    come. Clothes will be sorted

    and donated and unnecessary

    items thrown in the trash.

    Sometimes, however, there's

little time for a thorough clean-

ing, so a quick tidying up is

    done when guests are coming

to visit. There are many ways

to tackle the clutter and get a

home presentable in no time at

all. When you're short on time,

consider these ways to give liv-

    ing spaces the appearance of

    cleanliness.

    Kitchen

    Assess the kitchen sink and

    move all the dishes awaiting

    washing into the dishwasher.

Wipe down the inside of the

    sink with a disinfecting wipe

    or a clean sponge.

    Wipe down the countertops

quickly with a wipe or sponge.

Wet a paper towel or rag and

attack any errant spots on the

    stove and floor, which will

    become sticky and attract

    more dirt.

Fold or hang dish towels in a

    way that camouflages any

    stains.

Place a small pan of water on

    the stove with some nutmeg

and cinnamon and bring to a

    simmer. This will disguise any

    smells lingering from last

    night's dinner.

    Take down magnets and notes

    stuck to the refrigerator and

temporarily place them in a zip-

    per-seal bag.

If I could tell you how to

    build a home with practi-

    cally no more money than

    a conventional heating and

    cooling system, and youd

    have no heating or cooling

bills, would you do it? If I

could then tell you how to

    eliminate your electric bills

also and end up with a net

zero home, would you do it?I would hope so, because

this is all possible now, and

you really dont have any out

    of pocket costs because its

part of the cost of the house.

    A Geothermal Heating

    and Cooling system works off

    the constant 54o temperature

    of the earth. With heat

pumps that take heat out of

the house in the summer and

bring it into the house in thewinter, you have an air distri-

bution system that is the most

    comfortable of any heating or

cooling system there is. If dry

    heat bothers you with asthma,

    bronchitis or allergies, geot-

    hermal will reduce those

    symptoms and youll be much

    more comfortable.

    So heres how it can

    work. Contracting for a geot-

hermal system with Solar &More will give you the oppor-

tunity to save 30% on your

    system and your homes insu-

    lation and ductwork. How do

we do this? We design and

    include the homes air han-

    dling and ductwork into the

    Geothermal system. We then

    provide the spray-in foam

    insulation as part of the

    Geothermal system also. This

does two things; it increasesthe insulation from the

    homes envelope (the insu-

lated living area of the house)

and reduces the size of the

    Geothermal system because of

    this extra insulation. Spray in

    insulation is much more effi-

    cient than standard mat insu-

    lations provided with most

    homes.

    Whats all this mean?

Basically, you get aGeothermal system for the

    same amount as a traditional

    heating and cooling system.

And, you get a much tighter

    home with fewer drafts and

    the most comfortable heat

    and cooling system you can

    buy!

    So now youve finished

    building the house and youre

    in. What happens next?

    Youve reduced your heating

and cooling bills by up to

    70%! You also cover about

70% of your domestic hotwater bills with this geother-

mal system as we install a

    desuperheater that transfers

heat from the heat pumps to a

    hot water heater. What could

    be better!

    Tell your architect to be

    sure he considers a

    Geothermal system. If he

    doesnt, weve got an architect

who will design this for you

and it wont cost you any more

    than a traditional design. If

hes really good, hell also give

you a south facing roof forsome solar panels. This could

    eliminate the remaining por-

tion of your electric bill to

    give you that net zero

    homeno electric, no heat-

    ing and no cooling costsfor

the life of your home. Thats

    energy efficiency!

Call it a sign of the

    times or just plain

    good luck for those of

us yearning to swap fast food

    fare for some tasty home

    cooking. Potluck gatherings

are back and one of this year's

    hottest trends in entertaining.

    Although these communal

"luck of the pot" meals (where

    everyone brings their favorite

dish) hearken back to the late19th century, they found their

    footing in the mid-1950's

    when it seemed like every

    mom in the neighborhood

    was filling casserole dishes for

    church socials and family get-

    togethers.

    "There are three primary

    reasons driving the return of

    potluck -- our schedules, the

    economy and childhood

    memories," says Chef Jeff

    Gillis, www.Celebrating

Home.com. "We live suchfast-paced lives that divvying

    up the cooking makes home

    entertaining more realistic

than putting all of the burden

    on the hostess. Making one

    dish instead of several also

    helps stretch the budget --

    something we're all looking to

do these days. And, let's face

it -- after years of dashing

    through the drive-thru,

wouldn't you like to sit downto some home-cooked food,

even if it's only once a week?"

    Got potluck fever but

not a clue what to do? Here

are four tips that'll make your

    next gathering both tasty and

    stylish, plus, a family-fave

    recipe that'll put your home

on the map as potluck heaven.

    Potluck's back -- let's eat!By Carla Jordan

A slow cooker (like Celebrating Home's Venetian Home Spice Bean

Bean Pot Beef StewThis twist on an

    American favoriteyields a hearty,

flavorful entree thattakes less prep time
