Objectives

• After this presentation you will be able to:– explain the role of the instructional designer– identify some of the models used by instructional

designers– write performance objectives

Agenda

Part 1 – The role of the instructional designer

Part 2 – Models

Part 3 – Writing performance objectives

So...What do you do?

I’m an instructional designer

Wikipedia Says...

“...the practice of maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction and other learning experiences.”

Citation needed

Rothewell & Kazanas Say...

“It is associated with the broader concept of analyzing human performance problems systematically, identifying root causes of those problems, considering various solutions to address the root causes , and implementing the solution in ways designed to minimize the unintended consequences of corrective action.”

Well...

The Logical

We use the whole brain to help people do their jobs better by creating learning experiences that are engaging and practical with enlightening results.

There’s Really 3 Parts

Context(dynamic

So Needs Analysis Seems Important• Asking the right questions (of the right people)• Describe the problem• Address perceptions• Identify causes• Observe the situation• Understand the organizational goals• Test assumptions• Identify problems to be solved by the writing of

performance objectives

Writing Performance ObjectivesVerb Performance Criterion Condition

Use a verb at the beginning of your performance objective

Answer the question “what will the learner know or be able to do”

Describe how well the learner should know or be able to do the performance – make sure its measurable

Begin with “given” or “when” and describe the conditions that must be exist for the learner to perform

For Example

Upon completion of the course you should be able to write an effective performance objective based on the model, given that the situation is fictional.

Now You Try

Upon completion of the course the learner will be able to...
