    LAND AT LAST: Helderbergs fa

    mous adventurer Riaan Manser

    and his girlfriend Vasti Geldenhuys

left the Moroccan coast on 31 De

cember in a seven metre rowing

    boat, starting their journey to

    Manhattan, New York. Now, after

    a gruelling 10 765 km of rowing

and 133 days at sea, the couple

    have finally reached their destina

tion. They rowed their way into

history on Friday 20 June by be

ing the first two people in the

world to row from Africa to New

York with no assistance. When the

    couple return home the DistrictMail

will hopefully catch up with the

    couple for an exclusive interview.

    )With regards to the recent

    Lwandle evictions, to all those

who find the whole saga inhu

mane, take a back seat and take

    into consideration the ratepayers

living right next door to these ille

gal dwellers. Would you be as

    sympathetic if your property val

ues were threatened or you had

to put upwith the noise andawful

    smells?

I dont think so. Blackheath didnt

    want them, well neither does

    Strand.

    ) Helderberg Hospital is quick

when it comes to security and

very slow in terms of medical

    help.

On 17 June my sister was at

tacked, she lost a lot of bloodand

her blood pressure was low. She

was weak and upon arriving at

    the hospital, security informed us

    about a change over.

    We eventually ended up going

    to Mediclinic Vergelegen so that

    she could be stabilised.We went

back to the hospital later, where

we had to be rude before we re

ceived any assistance. This is not

the way a health care facility

    should operate.

    )What is wrong with Somerset

    West courts? Armed robbers are

    given bail whilst investigations

    are still happening. House

    breakers are not convicted. We

    need the law.

    Animalsareas important tousas children

To the various vets in the Helder-

    berg:

    Our animals are as important

to us as our children. When they

are ill and suffering, we expect to

find medical help from our local

vets. We are driven by love and

fear to find relief for these small

creatures that bring us so much

    unconditional love.

    On Saturday evening my sis-

    ters dog was having convul-

sions and she phoned five vets

after hours numbers, but to no

    avail.

She then rushed her dog to

the SPCA in Bellville, but un-

fortunately due to the delay in

trying to find a local vet to as-

sist her, her dog passed away.

    This week, a close friends

    catwaswailing in excruciating

    pain. She contacted her local

Strand vet, but was told they

are all on lunch. She then

    phoned thevet inAltenaRoadand

the one in Gordons Bay, but was

met with the same pathetic re-

    sponse. Eventually, the SPCA in

    Gordons Bay informed her that

she could bring her cat to them

and they gave her cat immediate

    attention, but unfortunately the

cat had to be put down.

This is not an anomaly as I have

been told of many similar inci-

dents and I have also experienced

    the same type of unavailability

when my own dogs eye was

    rippedout.Whydoesaveterinary

clinic not have doctors on stand

    byduring lunchhours.Evenbusi-

nesses have staff on a rotation ba-

sis during lunch hours, or during

    the evenings?

    They claim they are available,

but in times of dire need they are

    all MIA (missing in action).

Two small lives were lost this

    week and the result trauma

and tears , which have now

    turned to anger, could have

    been avoided.

All praise and thanks goes to

the SPCA for their unfailing de-

    termination to assist when the

    others were having lunch or

    just not answering their

    phones.

    STRAND

Its time fora revolution toprotect our town

    Whats happened to our beautiful

    Helderberg?Why is there somuch

    crime all of a sudden?

This year alone has had more

    known incidents than any other

    year, ranging from shoot-outs,

    murders and armed robberies to

    plain theft not being committed

    by the stereotypical crooked Ni-

gerians. Heres the cold, hard fact:

Our own people are starting to

    commit crimes.

    Its becoming easier and easier

for us, as residents of the once glo-

    rious and peaceful Helderberg, to

point fingers and raise your opin-

    ionabouteveryevent thathashap-

    pened.

Its time to shut up, stop moan-

ing, and start doing something to

    prevent these issues fromhappen-

    ing again!

For too long have we (and note

    that it includes myself) been

    ridingonthebackof themetaphor-

ical horse and just looking away,

    minding our own business when

    something happens.

Its timewe take action and take

back our town, which once was a

    thriving community. Stop looking

away, and start facing the facts

its going to happen to you soon.

Will you be prepared to defend

    yourself,andwillyourneighbours

    or someonewalking past you, stop

and help you, knowing that you

would have done the same for

    them?

    Crime isnt justmurder, theft or

assault. Its much more than that.

Whos going to clean up yourmess

if you leave your trash on the

    beach?Whatsyourreactiongoing

tobe if youwant to enjoy thebeach

    and it looks disgusting?

For this reason, I want to thank

    eachandeveryinitiativelaunched

by those in our community, for

making a difference; not for per-

sonal gain, but for the sake ofmak-

    ing other peoples lives easier.

I would like to thank our neigh-

    bourhood watches, the groups of

    people that voluntarily clean up

    the beaches each month, those

    whovolunteer for charity and eve-

ry single one who made a differ-

    ence in our community. Your

deeds have been noticed, and we

    appreciate it.

    Helderbergers, heres my chal-

lenge to all of us: Make the first

move, and be one step ahead of

crime. I did it by joining our local

    neighbourhood watch. What are

you going to do to protect our com-

    munity?

    JOHAN BRINK

    Emotions run

    high in

    Macassar

    Macassar residents are angry and

fed up, and whether its wrong or

right, they have begun to take the

    law into their own hands.

    This week Macassar residents

    were protesting about the Lwandle

evictees to be moved to Macassar to

    benefit from a planned housing

    project there (readarticle onpage 3).

    Their frustrations reached boil-

ing point when the councillor to

whom they were going to submit a

    petition, signedbymorethanathou-

sand people, did not turn up.

    They vented their frustration by

    burning tyres and throwing stones.

The burning of tyres to block off

roads and the throwing of stones at

police, who were sent to Macassar

to quell the violence, cannot be con-

    doned.

But one should try to understand

    their frustration, anger and feelings

of helplessness as they see the land

that was promised to them, now be-

ing promised to people from outside

    Macassar. Lets hope some sense

prevails and this mess is sorted out.

    Ontevredenheidoor

    plakkers inMacassar

Ek is baie teleurgesteld in burgemees-

ter Patricia de Lille wat plakkers na

    Macassar wil verskuif.

Ek bly al jare lank in Macassar waar

ek vir n huis wag en waar sy die plak-

kers wil dump. Ek huur tans n huis

    in Rondomskrik waarvoor ek elke

    maand huur moet betaal.

oor jul besluite. As ek as inwoner van

    Macassar terugkyk, is daar geenmate-

riaal aan ons mense vir verskuiwing

gegee nie, maar wel aan Lwandle se

plakkers. By onsemense se hokke ren

    petisie by die raadskantoor inhandig.

Ons stemme was goed genoeg, maar

beloftes word nie nagekom nie. Daar

is reeds n klomp buitelanders in Ma-

cassar, en nouwil jy nog buiteplakkers

    dump. Dit is baie verkeerd.

    Crossing over with Christy

    Sir LowrysPrimr sehoofgroet

    DELIAH BRINKHUIS

    Rolan MacDonald, skoolhoof van

    die Sir Lowrys Pass Primre

Skool, s aan die einde van Junie

    totsiens aan di skool.

    MacDonald, n boorling van die

dorp, was vir byna drie dekades aan

die stuur by die skool nadat hy in Ja-

nuarie 1988 in di pos aangestel is.

    Vars uit die onderwyskollege het

hy in Januarie 1979 sy onderwys-

    loopbaanbyHorskoolGordoninSo-

merset-Wes begin. Ses jaar later het

    hydieposvanadjunkhoofbydiedes-

    tydse Marsh Alliston-skool in Sir

    Lowrys Pass aanvaar.

Hy is trots op die pad wat hy by

    di skool geloop het.

In Oktober 1987 het hy by die des-

    tydse hoof, wyle Samuel Wessels,

oorgeneem, en die volgende jaar het

die skool na n splinternuwe gebou

verskuif en die naam na Sir Lowrys

    Pass Primr verander.

    vrouGail enhul tweekinders,Melis-

    sa en Radley.

Maar, s hy, net soos wat sy kan-

    toordeur gedurende skoolure vir ou-

ers en onderwysers oop was, het hy

    ook noopdeur tuisgehadenhetbaie

    ouers na-ure kom aanklop.

MacDonald is trots op die mylpale

    watdie skool deurdie jarebehaalhet

en noem n paar van die uitdagings

wat oorkom is die stigting van die

    voedingskema, die geletterdheids-

    sentrum, die borgskap-program en

    die talle akademiese en sportpresta-

    sies van leerders.

Die grootse sukses, meen hy, was

die stigting van die geletterdheid- en

    syfervaardigheidsentrum in 2011.

Di program, s MacDonald, het die

    leerders se akademiese vaardigheid

    asook hul selfvertroue en algehele

    dissipline aansienlik verbeter.

Hy is dankbaar vir die finansile

steunwat die skool deur die jare van

    plaaslike sowel as buitelandse borge

en kerke ontvang het. Die Borg, n

    leerder-program waar leerders se

    jaarlikse skoolfooie betaal word, is

in 2005 begin toe skoolfooie R100 per

    leerder was.

    MacDonald onthou goed hoe die

program begin het wanneer hy ver-

tel van die graad R-uitstappie wat n

leerder nie kon meemaak nie omdat

    diekindseouers niedieekstrauitga-

    we kon bekostig het nie.

n Donasie van n werkgewer van

    digr.Rseouer,BarbaraTofaute,het

dit moontlik gemaak dat die hele

    graadR-klassiedieuitstappiekonge-

    niet.

    Tofaute het gou meer buitelandse

    borgeondermeeruitDuitsland,Swe-

de en Holland aan boord gekry en

    vandagworddie jaarlikse skoolfooie

van R350 vir 450 leerders geborg.

    MacDonaldverteldatdieskoolook

    daagliks, danksy die ondersteuning

    van die onderwysdepartement en

    plaaslike kerke, sowat 950 leerders

    van n gekookte maaltyd, vrugte,

    melk en koeldrank voorsien.

    In sy jareas skoolhoofhetdaarook

    heelwat leerders goeie sportpresta-

sies behaal. Hy glimlag trots wan-

neer hy vertel van die leerders wat

    provinsiale kleure in sportkodes

Hy is egter onseker oorwatdie toe-

    prioriteite is.

    Inpursuit of rareplantsatVergelegen

    A team of enthusiastic, ama-

    teur botanists recently visited

    the historic, 314-year-old

    Vergelegen Wine Estate.

    The team are all

    members of the Custo-

    dians of Rare and En-

    dangered Wildflowers

    programme (CREW).

    CREW is a pro-

    gramme that involves

    volunteers from the

    public in the monitor-

    ing and conservation

    of South Africas

    threatened plants.

    Joined by Vergele-

    gens winery assistant

    Maritza van Rensburg,

    the dozen visitors

    ranged from a Stellen-

    bosch University stu-

    dent to an elderly

    grandmother.

    There are almost 300 threat-

ened plant species on the Red Da-

ta plant list in the Helderberg ar-

ea, said CREW team leader and

    field guide Cecilia Wolmarans.

The volunteers met early on a

    cold wintermorning and drove to

a spot of shale several kilometres

    from the main Vergelegen

    homestead.

    Wolmarans showed them pho-

    tographs and gave descriptions of

the plants to focus on, such asEri-

    ca ferrea andMimentes arboreus.

    The team identified more than

50 species and the rich pickings

of the day included ground pro-

    teas, Protea scorzonerifolia (vul-

    nerable) and Babiana villosula

    (endangered).

    For each trip (volunteers set

    out twice a month) Wolma-

rans fills in a lengthy form

    with information such as

    plants GPS coordinates, ar-

ea geology and the age of the

    veld.

    We record threats or dis-

    turbances there are none

    at Vergelegen, she said.

    CREW teams have been

    visiting the estate since

    2011, as increasing numbers

    of rare and endangered

plant species spring up as a

    result of an ambitious 10-

    year programme (initiated

    in 2004) to clear 2 200 of a

total 3 000 hectares of non-

    arable land.

This is believed tobe the largest

    private conservation undertak-

    ing in South Africa.

As the area also has a variety

of soil types such as shale, granite

    and Table Mountain sandstone,

    there is an outstanding

variety of plants to be seen,

    said Wolmarans.

    Vergelegen conserva-

    tionist Gerald Wright says

there are at least 500 plant

    species on the farm.

    As alien vegetation uses

50 to 800 times more water

    than fynbos, reducing the

    alien vegetation has boost-

    ed water flow at Vergele-

    gen.

    Wetland areas are re-

    emerging (a wetland area

    that was virtually dead is

    now fed by six streams)

    and large quantities of

    cleanerwater can be seen flowing

    into the Lourens River, which

leads from the farm to neighbour-

    ing communities.

The number of bird species has

soared from 80 to at least 142, said

    Wright, and there are frequent

    sightings of Verreaux eagles, fish

    eagles and malachite sunbirds.

    Secretarybirdsandbluecranes

are breeding on the farm and vis-

    iting birds include steppe buz-

    zards from Russia and yellow

    billed kites from North Africa.

    The animal population in-

    cludes numerous antelope spe-

    cies, leopard, caracal, honey

    badgers, snake weasels, silver

    foxes, Cape hares and spotted

    genet.

You dont have to be a botany

    expert or have vast experience

with plants to get involved in

    CREW, Wolmerans added.

    CREW members, Maritza van Rensburg

and Cecilia Wolmarans study plants at

    Vergelegen.

Babiana villosula is one of the many plant species

    found at Vergelegen.

    net gaan styg en styg?

Die indeks van 51 323 op Vrydag 20

Junie, beteken dat al die aandele op

    diebeurs tesamenoupasdievlakvan

R12 000 miljard bereik het, of 12 tril-

    joen.

In Oktober 2010 het ons ook baie te

s gehad toe die einste indeks 30 000

gehaal het, wat in daardie tyd gelyk

    was aan sowat R6 triljoen.

Die rede waarom die huidige vlak

van 50 000 ons tot dubbeld soveel ge-

voel het, was weens die notering van

sulke groot oorsese groepe hier soos

    Glencore Xstrata.

skaars R1,3 triljoen in April 2003, toe

die algehele indeks skaars 7 000 was.

meer is as n klompie jare gelede.

    sienlike hoeveelheid virtuele kon-
