From thePresident /CEOCan it be that another incredible year has already
passed? 2004 will be remembered as a dynamic year of
exciting change for Winona Health, as we came to a
crossroads and chose our path. We dedicated time this
past year to review our mission statement and gain
consensus and commitment to our organizational
purpose. These efforts engaged our board members,
management, staff and physicians. The result is a new
mission statement that captures the purpose of our
organization and our commitment to serve the
community:
Winona Health is devoted to improving the health and well-being of our family, friends and neighbors.
The Winona Health Board of Directors approved
this mission statement in September. It is such an
important organizational statement, as it guides all of
our decisions and actions. Our strategic plan is based
on this statement; our capital plan is based on it; and
every departments’ efforts are aligned with meeting
this mission.
Beyond a statement of commitment, Winona
Health has to demonstrate how we are meeting this
mission every day. Every one of us at Winona Health
expresses our devotion to you, the people we serve,
through our Values. The Winona Health values of
Integrity, Compassion, Family,
Spirituality, Excellence, People,
Environment and Communication
include specific service standards and expectations
that we must all meet. These standards and
expectations are integrated throughout our
organization and are commitments we make to
everyone who seeks services throughout
Winona Health.
Improving health and well-being is anotherdemonstrable challenge we have committed tothrough our mission statement. While this challengemay seem a bit daunting, Winona Health is anorganization up to the task. Winona Health is aremarkable healthcare organization living through asea of nation-wide healthcare changes and challenges. Our Four Cornerstones anchor us to thefoundation upon which we align our goals, strategies, actions and resources. They provide clarity in settingpriorities and have proven constant over time. These cornerstones are: Our People, Care andService, Collaboration and FinancialStewardship.
Physician recruitment, the building project, service excellence, pursuit of the Malcolm BaldrigeQuality criteria, participation in the Center forMedicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) quality project, our new Foundation Board, and retention andrecruitment of our excellent staff are all strategiesaligned with our cornerstones. They demonstrate themeans by which Winona Health pursues improvingthe health and well-being of our family, friends andneighbors.
Throughout this annual report, you will seeglimpses of the remarkable people and outcomes wehave achieved in this organization – and I can assureyou these glimpses are only the tip of the iceberg.Every day I consider myself blessed to be a part of anorganization and a community that has trulyextraordinary physicians and staff committed tocaring for them. I believe this often gets lost in the“bigger is better” mythology that haunts manysmaller communities. But I know I sleep better atnight because of the confidence I have in ourcommunity’s healthcare providers. Our missionstatement says it all: Every one of us at Winona Healthis here for you – our family, friends and neighbors!

4ANNUAL REPORT 2004
From the Winona HealthBoard Chair
Thinking about 2004 is a pleasant exercise. It was anexciting year for Winona Health…perhaps the mostprogressive year in the organization’s 110-year history. It was a year when all the pieces were put into place tooffer Winona area residents a wonderful new era inhealth care.
After months of collaborative negotiations withthe Winona Clinic, Winona Health in Augustannounced a $32 million building project – a projectthat will move the Winona Clinic’s operations onto theWinona Health campus.
New construction immediately southeast ofCommunity Memorial Hospital will include aClinic/Medical Office Building, Outpatient DiagnosticCenter, a parking ramp and will also renovate anumber of hospital facilities. All phases of the projectshould be completed by March of 2006.
Upon completion of the project, Winona Healthwill have state-of-the-art facilities and technologies tocare for the healthcare needs of our community’sresidents. Over the years, Winona Health has investedin an extensive array of surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and information services equipment andtechnology so we can deliver excellent healthcare tothose in need of our services. The new and renovatedfacilities will meet our commitment to move healthcare in the Winona area to an even higher level.
Winona Health’s new Diagnostic Center willhouse a permanent Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) machine, providing greater access to these testsfor community residents. Add to this our digitalRadiography and PACS system – which transmits, stores, and retrieves digital medical images for viewing– and you better understand why we believe our newbuilding project will move us into the future ofhealthcare diagnostic services.
Winona Health already is a leader in its seamlesscommunity-wide electronic medical record (EMR) –one of the reasons Community Memorial Hospital has
been named a “Most Wired – Small & Rural Hospital”for three consecutive years! Winona’s secure systemallows all local healthcare providers to access yourEMR. So, if you arrive in the CMH EmergencyDepartment late one evening, the doctors and nursescan review your EMR to learn of recent physician visitsand lab test results.
As all of us on the board of directors watch theprogress being made on these new buildings, it wasgratifying to see the completion of one of the firststages of the hospital remodeling: the new heliport, located on CMH’s rooftop. Helicopters from MedlinkAir (LaCrosse) and Mayo One (Rochester) both testlanded on the new helipad on November 30, and theirpilots applauded the rooftop location, which providesa safer landing for them and safer transport for ourpatients.
The collaborative relationships our organizationand Winona’s physicians enjoy with tertiary centerssuch as Gundersen and Mayo is also a comfort. Weknow that when our residents need the services ofspecialists at those centers, access is both open andconvenient. I can assure you that the Winona Health’sboard will continue to foster and expand thesecollaborative efforts while, at the same time, we recruitthe best and brightest healthcare providers to serve ourcommunity. Recruitment of new physicians andhealthcare providers to the Winona area remains oneof our key priorities – and we believe our state-of-the-art facilities will help in those recruitment efforts.
Yes, for more than a century, Winona Health hasbeen a friend for life to the residents of this area. And the steps taken in 2004 will ensure our residentsconvenience and the best in facilities, equipment andhealthcare providers for years to come.
While we are pleased with the developments2004 has initiated, all of us on the Winona Healthboard are committed to continuing the progress in theyears ahead. That is necessary to meet our pledge toprovide exceptional healthcare services to the residentsof this area. The building project is a significant stepforward, because it will usher in a new era ofhealthcare services to the Winona region.

Jon Nienow was 52 years old. He walked three miles a day, liftedweights and was in great shape. But in November of 2003, as heentered Community Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department(ED), none of that seemed to matter. He was having a heart attackand he needed help.
Enter Community Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Departmentteam. Mr. Nienow was assessed, treated, and transported within 38minutes.
“They were angels,” Nienow said of the staff that he believessaved his life that day. “I can’t say enough about the nurses and thedoctor who took care of me.”
The doctors who treated him at Mayo Clinic told him how luckyhe was to get the treatment he did at the CMH ED. “They said that if Ihadn’t gotten the excellent, immediate care that I got at CMH, Iwouldn’t be here today,” Nienow shared. He sings the praises of Dr.Brett Whyte, who made the diagnosis and was so quick to treat theproblem, giving him a clot-busting drug within 13 minutes of hisarrival that seized the attack and saved his life.
17,000 PATIENTS SERVED EACH YEARThough not every trip to the ED is quite as serious, almost no one canescape a visit at some point. There will inevitably be an ear infectionat 2:00 a.m. or a broken bone that needs immediate attention. And
life-threatening situations don’t wait foroffice hours.
So we turn to the people we know willhave their light on for us – the doctors, nurses, and support staff at CommunityMemorial Hospital’s Emergency Department. They are prepared for whatever crisis mayenter their doors.
“We had 17,206 visits to the ER in2004,” says Bev Speltz, manager of theEmergency Department and CertifiedEmergency Nurse. And whether it is a heartattack or an ear infection, the patients who
enter the ED are often scared and uncertain. They are looking forfriendly and familiar faces that will calm, soothe and heal.
Bev, who has been a nurse for almost 15 years, understands this. She worked as an ED nurse for eight years before taking over asmanager. She proudly leads her team of nurses, doctors andsecretaries in serving patients with skilled compassion.
That’s exactly what Edith and Byrle Tschumper were looking forwhen they entered the ED on a recent Wednesday morning. Theyweren’t sure which doctor or nurse they would see, but they were sureof the kind of care they would receive. It was not their first visit to

CMH’s Emergency Department, and they smiled as they rememberedprevious visits.
“Our care has always been very good,” noted Edith, who happened to
be the patient this time. “We think a lot of our hospital here.” As her
husband stands at her bedside, he is thankful for the time and attention
that has always been given to them in the ED. “Everyone always explains
things so well,” says Byrle. “The doctors are so helpful. And the nurses, they
are just wonderful.”
ED NURSES PROVIDE CALM, COMFORTING CARENurses are most often the first faces seen upon entering CMH’s ED. They
quickly and efficiently assess the patient’s situation with a calm confidence
that reassures even the most frightened patient. Their skill and dedication
are evident in the treatment they provide.
“We have a team in place that is truly devoted to serving our mission
of improving the health and well being of our family, friends, and
neighbors,” says Speltz. Community Memorial Hospital employs 18 full-
time Registered Nurses in their Emergency Department, with nine more on
call. They range from brand new recruits right out of nursing school to
veteran nurses who have been with the hospital for nearly 30 years. They
each joined the Emergency team for a variety of reasons, but the common
goal is to provide skilled, quality care for the patients who enter their
department.
Sheryl Klug has been a CMH nurse for almost 25 years, the last eight
of them in the ED. “I came to the ED in search of a new challenge. And I
love the variety of people we care for,” she said. Sheryl credits the success of
CMH’s Emergency Department to a true team effort. The nurses, the
doctors, the support staff, as well as other hospital departments, all
contribute to ED patients’ well-being.
Erika Ping is one of the newest members of the Emergency team. She
relocated to Winona after working in a larger facility in the Twin Cities
area. A graduate of the UW-Eau Claire nursing program, she has been
working in the field for two years. In joining the Winona Health team, she
definitely noticed the benefits of a small town hospital. “People here have a sense of community,” Erika noted. “They really
are caring for their neighbors.” She understands that people wantreassurance when they come here and they want to know they will receivethe best care possible from well-trained professionals. “Patients want toknow that we are going to take care of them, that they will be okay.”
We have a team in place that is trulydevoted to serving our mission ofimproving the health and well being of our family, friends and neighbors.
Though the nursing team does not do it alone, their smiles ofreassurance and their gentle kindness – along with their skill anddedication – greatly contribute to each patient’s healing.
ED DOCTORS: CAPABLE AND COMPASSIONATE
After the initial assessment by the nurse, ED patients are seen by a
physician. Winona Health employs five full-time physicians in CMH’s
Emergency Department. Each has a diverse background and their own
specialty, yet they are united in providing the community with quality,
topnotch emergency care. (See sidebar on the following page.)
This physician team includes Dr. Terry Donnal, a former physician
with the U.S. Air Force who works with local allergy patients when he’s not
in the ED. Or patients may be treated by Dr. Marc Dummit, president of the
Winona County Medical Society, who takes great pride in the tree house he
built for his family.
Dr. Chris Schubert brings a pediatric background to his work, and
Dr. Brett Whyte is Winona Area Ambulance Service’s Medical Director. Dr.
Carlos Morales, a native of Puerto Rico and a Mayo graduate in Internal
Medicine, has taken his medical expertise around the world and is rarely
without a smile.
8ANNUAL REPORT 2004
Nurses debrief during shift change in the ED.
COMPETENT, CUTTING EDGE SUPPORT STAFFAND TECHNOLOGIESMost patients are familiar with doctors’ and nurses’ hands-on involvementin emergency medicine. But what people may not realize is the work thatgoes on behind the scenes: ED secretaries order X-rays and lab work andenter information on patient charts. They also serve as unit dispatchers, communicating with incoming ambulances and reporting the news to thephysicians.
Stacy Fredrickson has been a Secretary/Dispatcher in the CMHEmergency Department for about three years. “We do whatever needs to bedone,” she said of her duties. “Whatever the doctors and nurses need, weare there for them.”
CMH also has adopted numerous technological advances to benefitpatient care, including linking the community’s healthcare providers viaan Electronic Medical Record (EMR). “The EMR is nice, because we haveall the [patient] information right there for us,” said Klug. “If a patient
was in the ED three days ago or had seen their physician for something theday before, we can pull it up right away on the EMR.”
In addition to the EMR, the newest advancement for the EmergencyDepartment is the heliport located on CMH’s rooftop. Previously, helicopterslanded on the ground adjacent to the ER. Relocating it to the rooftopprovides easier access for the pilot and more efficient care for the patient.
“Patients spend less time exposed to the elements,” explained Speltz.“And we eliminate the safety risk of having the public on the ground whena helicopter lands.” The heliport opened on November 30, with testlandings by Mayo One and Medlink Air pilots. Both commented on WinonaHealth’s “state of the art” heliport and its patient care benefits.
While no one looks forward to an ED visit, Winona Health’scompetent, qualified medical experts and state-of-the-art technologiesensure patients are treated promptly, expertly with great comfort and care.
If you ask Jon Nienow, who has fully recovered from his heart attack, the CMH emergency team far exceeds that goal. “Dr. Whyte and thosenurses saved me,” he said. “When they say a friend for life, they aren’tkidding!”

Hospital, Lake Winona Manor, Adith Miller and Roger
Metz Manors, Watkins Manor, our hospice and home
care programs, and our physician clinics.
They bring with them a wealth of knowledge
about the community we serve and a commitment to
ensuring strong community healthcare services. In the
next few months, we will develop a Winona Health
Foundation strategic plan, which will identify ways the
foundation will enhance the lives of the people in this
community through its support of Winona Health.
Of course, our work as board members is so
rewarding because of the generosity shown by you and
the Winona community. For 110 years, members of
this community have proven to be generous
benefactors to the hospital, our nursing home, assisted
living facilities, and all of Winona Health!
The cranes now poised around the Winona
Health campus to build a new Outpatient Diagnostic
Center and Medical Office Building are testament to
this community’s belief in and support of its local
healthcare system. All of us on the Winona Health
Foundation Board of Directors thank you for your
ongoing support. You are the reason your community-
based healthcare organization is “building for the
future.”

Winona Health Foundation Board of Directors
When you make a general gift in support of Winona Health, you can be assured that it will be directed to an area
that will make a difference in our ability to meet the healthcare needs of our community. Health education, new
surgical equipment, and technological improvements are just a few places private gifts can make a difference.
Members of the Winona Health Foundation Board work in cooperation with the Winona Health Board and
administration to determine how to maximize philanthropic dollars.
Many benefactors choose to direct their gifts to a specific Winona Health service or area. You can do so by
simply indicating what you would like your gift to support. To learn more about the Winona Health Foundation,
contact Nancy Brown, executive director, at 507.457.4342.
