Deer hunting is a grand part of ourstates outdoor traditions.

No where is this more evident thanright here in Manistee County.

The frenzy starts in the weeks leadingup to that grand day, Nov. 15.

Pick-up trucks seem to cruise throughtown with a little more zip. After the open-er, blaze orange garments are a commonfashion accessory on the streets and at thediners.

Get yer buck? becomes the most fre-quently overheard question.

But, most importantly, mid-Novemberis the time for that annual, singular eventon a mans schedule: deer camp.

The doors and windows of the cabin

are thrust open to air the place out.Generators are fired up. Twenty-year-olddirty magazines are pulled off a dusty shelf and spread on old coffee tables. A giantpot of chili is set to simmer on the stoverange. Someone gets a blazing fire going.Beers are cracked and alarms are set for4:30 a.m.

Its deer camp time.Now, dont think Im dissing you ladies.

Im sure camps all over the state have theirfemale representatives. But, when it comesdown to it, from what I know, deer campsa dude-heavy affair, what with all the brag-ging and flatulence.

For years, Ive felt like I was missingout on this.

Ive passed up many opportunities togo with buddies of mine who deer hunt,though Ive heard all of their illustriousdeer camp stories.

You see, I didnt grow up deer hunt-ing. I go after grouse and woodcock, whichmeans that when the firearm season starts,I put up my gun and stay as far away fromthe woods as I can until the season is over.

To be honest, my knowledge of deerhunting is pretty scant.

But I want you to teach me, Manistee.I have a proposition for all of you. Let

me come to your deer camp. Lets have a beer and tell me your camps backgroundand the stories that go along with it.

Dont worry: I always follow a strictBYOB policy, so you wont have to hide your coolers.

Also, dont be afraid that some of thestories you have might not be suitable fora general audience. While Ive never donedeer camp, I have done similar camps for birds, trout and salmon.

I know when discretion is needed.Last year, I spent a day at the ChislersLodge deer camp, which has a 70-year his-tory.

Those fellows had some wonderful sto-ries to tell, and I had a great time being apart of their camp, if only for a day.

If you do want to get your deer campsstory in the paper, all Im asking in returnis that you show a bird hunter the ins andouts of deer hunting.

Im also aware of the amount of hazingand teasing there will be involved with a33-year-old man going out on his first deerhunt when many of you have been doing itsince you were 12.

I can handle most of this. But, if any-one tells me that the best way to attractthe bucks is by running through the woodsin my brown pajamas with a pair of fakeantlers on my head, Im not falling for it.

Im looking to spend time at ManisteeCounty deer camps from Nov. 15 through20.

Medical Care Facility resi-dents will now have a new view as their travels take thembetween the Medical CareFacility and West Shore MedicalCenter.

The tunnel transition projectspearheaded by WSMC is now beginning to take shape as stu-dent artists begin the paintingof 4x10 foot murals along tunnelwall space. Last month, SarahFeyers, an eighth grade studentfrom Bear Lake, and AngelaCarter, a senior at ManisteeCatholic Central High School,applied the first brush strokes tothe wall.

The idea was first suggestedby a hospital employee who haswalked the tunnel during work breaks for 10 years. I have beendoing this since my son wasborn says Dawn Williams, tohelp with my personal physi-cal fitness goals. Six laps is onemile and walking quickly takesabout 15 minutes to complete.

When we started our hos-pital-wide Associate WellnessProgram, Dawn mentioned hermany years of walking in the

tunnel and wished that some-thing could be done to brightenit up a bit, said Dorothy Batzer,coordinator of the Fit Kids pro-gram at West Shore. My visits toall of the county schools whileconducting the Fit Kids programhave given me the opportunity to see the artistic talent of ourlocal students. I have always feltthat those talents should havea welcome place in the hospi-tal. After all, our community kids are stakeholders in ourorganization. Dawns sugges-tion of brightening up the tun-nel seemed a perfect venue forhighlighting these kids talentsand accomplishing some of thegoals of our hospital WellnessCommittee.

School art instructors wereapproached in the early springof this year with what was to beaccomplished with this project- to provide something visually pleasing to MCF resident whomight need to travel the tunnelto have tests or lab work doneat the hospital, and to providesomething enjoyable for hospi-tal associates to view as they use

the tunnel to walk during their breaks or before or after work. Appropriate pictures were firstchosen and submitted by the artteachers or school representa-tives. The hospital WellnessTeam chose those they thought

would best fulfill the projectgoals. The students were thencontacted to see if they wantedto volunteer their time and tal-ents for this community service.

These talented young people were challenged to translatetheir art from what was submit-ted to us on paper to mural-sizepieces painted with a totally different medium, said Batzer, who oversaw the painting.Angelas artwork was originally done in chalk/pastel and Sarahspicture was created using acomputer program. They had to

blend colors using the 10 paintcolors provided. It was also a joto see two parents involved withtheir kids both students hada parent to assist. The words of encouragement echoed throughthe tunnel!

Students volunteered theirtime and provided their ownpaint brushes/roller/sponges. Ace Hardware of Manistee gen-erously donated the paint forthe project.

Any middle school or highschool age student in ManisteeCounty is welcome to submit

artwork for this project, saidBatzer. My hope is to haveat least 10 to 15 more mural-size paintings to complete the wall. Area art teachers will beapproached about presentingthis opportunity to this yearsart students. The next paint-ing session will be in the early spring.
