    FOR BOB OLSEN

    Swim show honors

    late superintendentBY JOHN COUNTS

    STAFF WRITER

MANISTEE The burgeoning swim programin Manistee got together for an exhibition of sortson Saturday to honor one of its greatest supporters the late Bob Olsen.

As superintendent of Manistee Area PublicSchools, Olsen was integral in bringing the sportinto the community, namely with helping to makethe Paine Aquatic Center a reality.

The momentum to getting a broad-based pro-

ram started with Bob Olsen, said Manistee swimoach Corey Van Fleet.Saturdays 2nd Annual Bob Olsen Swim Show,

eld at the aquatic center, was a way to honor himnd for the swim program to show off just how farheyve come.

Manistee swim programs give youngsters like these the chance to take theplunge.

The ages of the swim-mers ranged from as youngas 7 all the way up to highschool aged kids. First, there was a diving display. Then, they swam variousstrokes in timed, but non-competitive heats for anaudience that included BobOlsens widow, Kathleen.

My husband was suchan advocate of the swim-ming program, she said.Hed be honored to see thechildren swim (today).

Admission to the eventwas in the form of dona-tions. At the end of theday, swimming organiza-tions raised about $622.The money will help theswim programs with travelexpenses.

The programs come along way since its inception,

Van Fleet said. After 18months, there are 200 kidsin Manistee on active swim-ming teams and 37 trainedlifeguards.

A lot of the programssuccess can be traced backto Olsen, who was a trainedlifeguard himself, Van Fleetsaid.

Its fitting we namethis program after him,he added. Hed light upif he could see a kid do asomersault (while diving),he said.
