BRETHREN There are two thingsthat students in the Kaleva NormanDickson excel at more than other districtsand those are community service projectsand appreciation for the arts.

There have been many occasions overthe past several years where the two havevirtually gone hand-in-hand for the KNDstudents. Past projects like ones they haveworked on with Crystal Mountain Resortin the Legacy Park and sprucing up the

Kaleva area with an art park are goodexamples of that taking place.

One teacher who has been at theforefront of many of those projects islong-time art instructor Deb Crandell. Shehas always encouraged her students touse their artwork in a way to help othersthrough community service. With March being Art Apreciation Month in Michigan,it was a perfect time to bring those talentsto light.

Crandell said that it is important tomake sure everyone knows the importantrole that the arts play in the daily lives of the students. She said with the funding

cuts taking place at the state level keepingenough funding for the arts is vital.March is Art Appreciation Month and

we have been working on a lot of projects

    Helping outKND students learn the

    value of communitysupport through art

    and hard work

    Ken Grabowski/News Advocate

The month of March was art appreciation month and students created manyunique designs and artwork for the community and others to enjoy.

to get the word out, saidCrandell. The state budgetcrunch supporting pro-grams like these is impor-tant because things aregoing to get reevaluated. Allof the arts are making ourstudents be able to fulfilltheir lives and becomeactive citizens.

Art students are alsodoing a special project where they are creatingspecial pieces of portraitartwork for children inthird world countries. They are given pictures of the

children and then draw aportrait of the child fromthe picture and send it back to them.

Crandell said this yearthey are doing portraits of orphans from the Ukraine.Since the children have virutally no possessions, they often keep the portraitsfor life as it becomes one of their most valuable posses-sions.

It is a community ser- vice project with a nationalflair to it, and this year they are doing seven portraits. They do get some feedback from the children and areoften sent a picture of them with the portrait.

Another community service project is one thatJeremy Whitmore is work-ing on to honor the veteransof the area. He is interview-ing veterans and writing uptheir history.

I am recording the vet-eran stories from the pastand am sending them to oulocal museum for youngergenerations to hear about, said Whitmore. I am doingstories on veterans from all wars.

Once the community service spirit catches holdat Kaleva Norman DicksonSchools everyone seems toget on board. When two for-mer students were tragicallkilled in a car crash thispast winter, the students atKND decided they wantedto do something to help outthe families.

Student David Conradorganized a penny wars between the classes to see who could raise the mostmoney among the classes.

We ended up rais-ing $130.55 and the highschool raised the most, said Conrad. It was to giveto the families to help withfuneral expenses.

Conrad said the studentsget a real sense of doingsomething positive whenthey help others in thismanner. He said it is a spirithat he hopes will spread tothe entire community.

We would like it if othepeople would come out andhelp the community, as it isa lot of fun to help others, said Conrad.

Physical educationteacher Jason McElrathpicked up on a long stand-ing tradition to help oth-ers and at the same timepromote good health forthose doing the community service.

This is my second year doing elementary physical education, saidMcElrath. We were doingthe Jumpstart for Heartprogram and we raisedaround $1,200 this year. Ialso incorporate it into theclassroom and this is for the whole district to help out with the American Heart Association. We are hopingthat through the processthe kids will become a littlemore aware of what is goingon with the American Heart Association, and to get a lit-tle exercise in the process.

    McElrath said they came

up with a variety of littleprizes to to encourage thekids to become more activein these types of activities.

I get some local prizesfor the kids including thingsfrom the military recruit-ers, said McElrath.

Community support is a valuable lesson to learn andat Kaleva Norman DicksonSchools students continueto to learn the value of it ona daily basis.
