The Manistee County areais a hikers paradise, thanks tothe 97,000 acres of ManisteeNational Forest within thecounty.
There is also plenty of opportunity to explore the for-est just outside the county, too.
Many enjoy day hikes whether they be short or long. The real outdoors people areattracted to the area becausethey can load up their back-packs and hit the trails for daysat a time.
The National Forest is idealfor backpacking because camp-ing is allowed anywhere onNational Forest land, unlessotherwise posted, and as longas the group size is less than75 people, permits are notrequired to camp on NationalForest land.
Some of the other restric-tions are that camping is notallowed within 200 feet of any body of water, except at des-ignated sites; within 450 feetof developed recreation areas;or within 150 feet of trails androads.
The most popular hikingin Manistee County is on the

in the Manistee National Forest
Some of the best trails in the area lead to Lake Michigan beaches.

If Manistee is anything, its flexibleIve been thinking about flex-
ibility this week and about adapt-ing to changing circumstances. If asked, most folks in ManisteeCounty would say that this is avery traditional community andthat change is slow here. As arelative newcomer to Manistee,I would have to respectfully dis-agree.
I think our community is high-ly adaptable and that flexibility has been and continues to be essential to Manistees success. What makes Manistee special isthat we preserve and respect ourpast at the same time.
Consider our history as a lum-ering community. A hundredears ago, the lumber industry ade Manistee County one of the
ichest per capita communities inhe country. Today, we honor thatradition through the preservationf our Victorian port and through
vents like the Manistee Nationalorest Festival.
But the world changed ando her credit, Manistee County hanged with it. We diversi-ied and now our local economy eflects that variety. As a result,e thrive. Weve all heard Charlesarwins theory of evolution, hich posits the survival of the
ittest, but what Manistee hasearned is that the measure of fit-ess is not strength or intelligencealthough we have plenty of both).ts adaptability that Darwineferred to and our communitys bility to change and reinvent her-elf is our greatest asset.
Our business community hasproven to be highly flexible, add-ing new products and servicesand discontinuing others as themarket requires and situationsevolve. One of my favorite exam-ples is Manistee National Golf and Resort, which was forced toaccept change last year when firedestroyed the club house. They reacted by erecting a tent whiletheir club house was being rebuilt. What makes Manistee National afine example of our adaptability isthat, when the tent proved to bepopular, the resort has erected itagain this year, even as the clubhouse is rebuilt. Thats flexibility.
In Manistee County, weve
managed to revere tradition evenas we embrace change and that bodes very well for the future.
Healthy countiesManistee County will be pro-
moting healthy counties duringthe month of April by celebratingNational County GovernmentMonth.
Learn more about how Manistee County is deliveringessential health care services,
providing high quality recreationprograms and promoting healthy living activities in our community. There will be an informationaltable in the courthouse lobby andthey will be presenting programsall month. On April 9, there will be an open discussion with StateRep. Dan Scripps at the court-house from 10-11:30 a.m.
