If theres one thing the Forest Festivalplanning committee knows, its that youdont mess with tradition in Manistee.

The very first Manistee Forest Festivalfeatured a colorful fireworks display fromsouth breakwater with Joe Fisk in chargeand the tradition continues this year,with fireworks over First Street and FifthAvenue beaches, presented by the LittleRiver Casino Resort, with support fromManistee World of Arts and Crafts.

The Manistee National Forest Festival

offers dozens of beloved events year afteryear and, over time, these events havebecome as much of a tradition as familyreunions to celebrate independence inManistee.

Alongside the traditional events,Forest Festival organizers have plannedseveral new events each year, too, and thisyear is no different. The festival kicks offThursday evening at 5 p.m. with a wineand food tasting in the open air overlook-ing the Riverwalk on the former Gliksparking deck. This event features winesfrom Douglas Valley Organic Vineyardsand food tastings from the new businessRiver Street Stockyard and Spirits.

Youngsters and oldsters alike will wantto take a ride on the Little Smilin ChooChoo, offering rides throughout the ForestFestival in the parking lot at DouglasPark.

Douglas Valley Organic Vineyardsoffers two new events in 2010 on thegrounds at the vineyard hay rides andthe unique GPS Poker Hike. For the PokerHike, youre invited to bring your GPSand hike the scenic 650-acre farm, draw-ing a card at up to seven coordinates. ThePoker Hike begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday.For information, visit douglasvalley.net.

Also at Douglas Valley on Friday,Saturday and Sunday are a great favorite hay rides. The whole family will enjoyhay rides on a tractor drawn hay wagonand mom and dad will welcome a chanceto sample Douglas Valley wines at the his-toric tasting house after the fun.

Last week, I had a chanceto chat for a few minutes witha passenger on the GrandMariner. The Grand Marinersails on a sixth-port cruise ofLake Michigan and Manistee isa favorite stop. As I talked withthis woman, I learned that she

was charmed by our historicdowntown and was especiallyimpressed by the warm wel-come she received as the GrandMariner docked and as shewalked around visiting stores.

I couldnt help but think ofone of my favorite sayings Itsno use waiting for your ship tocome in if you havent sent oneout. The fact is that great com-munities, interesting stores, qual-ity products and talented peoplearent discovered with successand riches following immediatelyafter.

When you hear of overnightfame or fortune, or when a busi-ness suddenly takes off, youcan be sure that the back storyincludes some heavy-duty reach-ing out to the marketplace. Andchances are, that overnight suc-cess spent months or even yearssending out ships before one eversailed in carrying a cargo of fameand fortune.

Think of the businesses inour community that you woulddefine as successful and ask

yourself whether theyve sent out

a ship or two.Do they advertise? Volunteer?

Contribute to causes in the com-munity? Offer stellar serviceto every single customer everysingle time? Sure they do. Thesame is true for communities as a

whole. We must send out several

ships economic developmentships, educations ships, manu-facturing ships, tourism ships in order to see our ship comein.

New events at

the Forest Festival

The 2010 Manistee NationalForest Festival, presented by thechamber since 1936, promisesentertainment and fun for the

entire family. There will be thetraditional events including thecarnival, parades, fireworks, artexhibits, tours, and so muchmore.

New this year is the Wineand Food Tasting Extravaganza

which will be held on July 1 from5-9 p.m.

The event will feature winesfrom Douglas Valley Organic

Vineyard and other local foodsand wines. The event will beheld in the open air overlook-ing the Riverwalk, 400 RiverSt. Admission is $5 per person,

which includes a commemorativeManistee National Forest Festival

wine glass and samplings of wineand food. Additional tastings areavailable for purchase. Music

will be provided by Triple Shot, athree-piece acoustic group.

Another exciting new event is

the garden tractor pull which willbe held on July 3 from 1-4 p.m.at the National Guard Armory.The event is presented by the

Western Michigan Old EngineClub. Lunch will be availablefrom Bravo Troop 1st SQDN,126th Cavalry. The event is spon-sored by West Shore Bank.

A traditional event held annu-ally is the Bed Race which will
