At first glance, mostmight believe the col-ors that best

define Rolling Thunderare as simple as black andwhite.

After all, many mem-bers of the veterans serviceorganization wear black andwhite vests and bandanas. They often don black andwhite protective gear, too, when riding their motor-cycles.

And, most importantly, they are known internation-ally for donating the soul-numbing black and whitePOW/MIA flag to schools, municipalities, civic andservice organizations, andmany others, in hopes ofkeeping alive the spirits ofwhose who were prison-ers of war, or who are stillmissing in action.

This black and whiteissue aside, the colors thatbest define Rolling Thunderare absolutely and unequiv-ocally All American -- red, white and blue.

Founded in 2002, the52 members who make upRolling Thunder Chapter

1 (of Manistee County)will host a benefit concert

Friday, June 25, at theLittle River Casino Resort.

Singer/songwriter andveterans activist KellyTrudell will headline theentertainment, which will

begin at 9 p.m. in the mainentertainment center. Intelling the story of the

American soldier in songand verse, and in meeting

with the families of manywho have died in battle,Trudell said she also has anew-found appreciation forRolling Thunder.

I cant imagine ... notknowing where your hus-

band is at, she said. Hashe been killed? Is he a pris-oner of war? Believe me,(after meeting with thesefamilies), I know I have a

better understanding ofwhat Rolling Thunder is allabout, and what they do forus.

Kelly Trudell is amaz-ing, said John Stocki, pres-

ident of the Manistee-basedchapter of Rolling Thunder. How fortunate we are tohave her performing for this

    benefit.She is a singer /song-

writer that will leave a lifelong memory in your heart

    with her music.Stocki said members

of his chapter will intro-duce guests of honor from

World War II, Korea,Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq andAfghanistan, along withseveral Gold Star Mothers,at Fridays concert.

Our honor guard willalso perform a six-manmissing man table presen-tation for our POW/MIAs,prior to the concert, hesaid.

Then, on Saturdaywe will have an escortedmemorial ride for our veter-ans through the countrysideof Manistee County andpart of Benzie County. ABlessing of the Bikes will

be performed by the tribesWarrior Society, just priorto departure (at 1p.m.).

    Blue WaterRamblersopen Concertin the ParkSeries

The Blue WaterRamblers will open theConcert in the Park seriesin the Village Park atOnekama on Monday, July5 at 7 p.m.

The singers take turnsharmonizing with eachother to create the Blue

Water Rambler tapestryof sound and consist ofBanjo-Jim Foerch, whosings of the sailors, farm-ers, lumberjacks, politi-cians and workers; BearBerends, who croons the

love songs and deliversprotest songs old and new;and Tom DeVris, who loves

working up a good songwith the boys and deliver-ing it to an enthusiasticaudience.

Their music consists ofsongs of Michigan, lakes, history and this area. They

wrote the original songabout Route M-22 (themost beautiful drive in theMid-West) which they willfirst perform at Concert inthe Park.

Banjo-Jim Foerchpicked up his first banjoin 1965, and hasnt put itdown since. As a foundingmember of the regionaltouring band Beats SettinHome, Banjo-Jim was busypickin and singin all overthe Midwest for 20 years

between 1982 and 2002.He says singing the songsof Michigan, America andour lives to all the peoplehe meets on tour is the bestthing hes ever done.

Everyone I ever methere in Michigan or around

the Midwest is proud ofour home state and ourcountry, said Foerch. Oursongs express that pridethe best way we know how by getting us all singingtogether.

    R. H. Bear Berendsholds down the rhythm

with his big, black six andtwelve string guitars. As

with so many baby boom-ers, he started strummingguitar and singing folksongs in high school in the1960s. He joined Banjo-

Jim and Beats SettinHome at the WheatlandMusic Festival in Remusin 1993 and Da Bearsterhasnt stopped playing andtouring since.

I wanted to sing withBanjo-Jim, so I learned allhis songs and taught himmine and here we are, heexplains.

Whether delivering thelead line of a love songor harmonizing with hissolid baritone, Bear sculptsthe Blue Water Ramblers

sound. At times, Banjo-Jimand Bear collaborate withmusical pals.

We love adding TomDeVries with his blazingmandolin and melodioustenor voice. For that high, lonesome, blue grass sound

we bring in California DanLynn and his bass fiddle.

Tom DeVries has beenentertaining all over theMidwest since his early20s. Between 1979 and2001, Tom was the frontman for the popular

    Michigan bluegrass band,The Hill People.

When asked why heloves picking with theRamblers these days, heresponded, Theres noth-ing Id rather do than finda good song, work it up

with the boys and deliverit to an enthusiastic audi-ence.

And thats what theRamblers are all about.

n Fuel tanksn An equipment check

    list that exceeds federalrequirements

What impressed meabout the virtual test: itbrings to mind just howinvolved operating a boatcan be, yet simple as wellif boaters are informed.Furthermore, I stronglybelieve informed boaterswill embrace that much

more the joy of boating. For more on virtual ves-

sel safety checks, I urge youto visit www.boatsmart.net Under Boating Safetyclick on Coast GuardAuxiliary or United SatesPower Squadron; then clickon vessel safety checks.

Either site will also pro-vide how you may contacta vessel examiner in yourarea.

This boating seasonmarks the 25th year TomRau has been writing hisboating safety column.Much of his 27 years withthe Coast Guard involvedsearch and rescue. Fromthis wealth of experiencehe authored the book BoatSmart Chronicles. For moreon Tom and his life-savingefforts visit him on the web:www.boatsmart.net

Boat Smart: do takeadvantage of this virtualguide to safe and enjoy-able boating.

In a joint website accord, the United States PowerSquadron and Coast GuardAuxiliary now offer boatersa wonderful opportunity tobe tested by a Virtual Vessel

Examiner to determine iftheir boats are up to speedregarding federal safetyrequirements. All that isrequired is a computer andInternet connection.

The test covers the fullrange of boats includingsailboats with and withoutauxiliary engines. It eventests requirements forpaddle craft. What I findappealing: the virtual testprovides boaters the oppor-tunity to be prepared for anon-site vessel safety check, whether it be performedby the Power Squadron orCoast Guard Auxiliary.

As a former CoastGuard boarding officer whohas inspected hundredsof boats, I often sensed

that boaters carry safetyequipment in order to

meet federal requirementsrather than appreciatingthe inherent value of theequipment.

And not only do manyboaters fail to appreciatethe safety equipmentsinherent value, just asmany fail to understand itsproper use. Whether thisbe the case or not, I stillurge all boaters to take thevirtual vessel safety test. Then I further urge them tofollow up the test with aninspection by a member ofthe Coast Guard Auxiliaryor United States PowerSquadron.

Many of these volunteerlifesavers have owned andoperated recreational boatsfor years, which affords

them the opportunity topass along valuable boat-ing tips. When boaterspass an inspection, theywill be awarded a VesselExamination Decal theymay post on their vessel. The decal will put them ingood standings with theCoast Guard. Here is aquick review of some of thematerial covered in the vir-

2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember telephone num-ber connecting people tocommunity resources dur-ing times of everyday need

and unexpected crisis.Calls are always con-

fidential, and callers willreceive help from certifiedspecialists. 2-1-1 is also

used during disasters toassist emergency manage-ment and health care per-sonnel in efficiently distrib-uting vital information.

I was so impressedwith the 2-1-1 system. Welive in the out-county areaand as senior citizens havelimited financial resources. Our trips to town are wellplanned and we have toaccomplish as much as we

can while we are there. Weneeded to know the hoursof the county courthouse soI picked up the phone anddialed 2-1-1.

The call specialistanswered and was happyI called. She told me thehours and even offered driv-ing directions. Then sheasked if there was anythingelse I needed. What a greatservicewe will definitely

use it again, said a lifelongManistee County residentrecently of the service.

The 2-1-1database offersup-to-date information onhundreds of resources avail-able to all Manistee Countyresidents. The service is 24hours a day and free to thecaller. 2-1-1 is a nationalUnited Way initiative withover 240 million Americansreceiving the service.

The Action Team isworking hard to informManistee County residentsabout the use and benefits

of the 2-1-1 system by pro-viding tailored seminars for

your group or organization. We are encouraging

schools, community net-works, service clubs, non-profit and for-profit busi-nesses to schedule a free, informative 2-1-1 presenta-tion to learn more about thesystem, explains EvelynSzpliet, director of the 2-1-1
