    Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce

Last Wednesday, yourchamber presented thelargest business event ofthe year the BusinessExpo and it was a greatsuccess.

On Thursday, we tookthe first booth reservationsfor the 2011 Expo, put awayour booth supplies andfinished up the remainingpaperwork associated withthe Expo.

And on Friday morn-ing, chamber staff and

    volunteers started planning

the next projects theManistee Business Awards,Chamber Annual Meetingand the Festival of Trees, part of Sleighbell Weekend.

Its the same for yoursuccessful business, isntit? As much as wed love

to point to our most recentproject and say, there, now

were done, promotingyour business and satisfyingyour customers isnt a proj-ect with a beginning and anending date, is it?

Our customers appreci-ate what weve done in thepast, but the most impor-tant thing to our customertoday is what we can dofor them today. And while

were taking great care ofour customers today, we

better be planning whatwere going to do for themtomorrow, too.

You know what? Mostof us wouldnt have it anyother way!

Successful projects andsatisfied customers help to

build our reputation, attractnew customers and keep usmotivated. For businesses, though, Im going to para-phrase Miley Cyrus -- thatsright, Miley Cyrus. Theresalways going to be anothermountainIts not abouthow fast I get there, not

about whats waiting on theother sideits the climb.

Prevention is keyfor flu seasonVaccination, hand wash-

ing, and cough etiquette caprevent illness. Last yearthe H1N1 flu scare caused

widespread anxiety. Thisyear, West Shore MedicalCenter is urging theManistee area communityto be prepared for flu sea-son. The flu is a contagiousrespiratory illness that cancause mild to severe sick-ness, and at times can leadto death, said Jim Toth,

    WSMC vice president ofnursing.

Vaccination is the besttool we have to preventthe flu. Hand washing canalso prevent the spreadof the virus. Wash yourhands often or use an alco-hol-based hand sanitizer, especially after you coughor sneeze. It is also goodpractice to use a tissue

when you cough or sneeze,or cough into your uppersleeve or elbow.

Toth advises that if youknow someone who is sick, avoid close contact until atleast 24 hours after theirfever is gone, and if youthink you have the flu, stayhome to avoid spreadingthe illness to others.

Flu symptoms includecough, sore throat, runnyor stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, andfatigue, and some people

will have a fever or experi-ence diarrhea or vomit-ing, Toth said. If yoursymptoms are severe or youare having trouble breath-ing, seek medical attentionfrom your physician or theEmergency Department.

To schedule an seasonalflu vaccination appointmentor if you have any ques-tions, contact your primarycare provider or the DistrictHealth Department #10 at(231) 723-1477 or online at

    www.dhd10.org.

One of the many exhibits in the Manistee Art Institutes Art Stars will feature phtography. All types of media are featured in the show.

interesting works that are sure to appealto everyone.

What is also interesting about thereception is it is always an opportunityfor the public to meet with the artistsand discuss their work. It is one of the

many unique concepts of the art institutethat allows access to artists that manyother shows dont do and people can dis-

cuss what inspired them in that particu-lar piece of art.

Those who cant make the openingnight shouldnt be discouraged becausethere will be plenty more opportunitiesto catch the show. It will run Oct. 16, 22

and 23 from 2-9 p.m. and on Sundays,Oct. 17 and 24 from 1-5 p.m. The show ifree to the public.
