The bottle crashed loudly into theempty recycling bin, catching everyonesattention in the parking lot by theOnekama Township Hall, but ManisteeCounty resident Carol DuVall, whodropped in that ceremonial first recycledbottle, wore a huge smile at the sound, because she knew it was the start of some-thing big for this area to help the environ-ment.

DuVall is one of many people that havebeen instrumental in getting a recyclingprogram going in Manistee County. Herpositive impact was the reason ManisteeCounty recycling coordinator Mary Pitcher

gave her the opportunity to drop in thefirst colored glass bottle in one of the newrecycling bins.

Wow, that was loud, said DuVall. However, to all those who gathered for

the initial placement of the new recyclingbins it was music to their ears, becausethis was a project that has been in theworks for several years. Mondays place-ment of new bins to recycle clear and col-ored glass is just another step in the pro-cess that allows residents to recycle those

items, tin, aluminum cans, paper, card-board, No. 1 to 7 plastics and No. 2 plasticgrocery bags at four locations throughoutthe county.

Pitcher explained that six townshipsin Manistee County have signed up tothe county recycling plan that adds $12to their tax bill giving them the option of

    recycling. Four locationshave been established

where residents can recyclein their respective location.

We have six townshipstaking part in Arcadia,Brown, Cleon, Springdale,Marilla and Onekama, said Pitcher. The countyrecycling program is a resi-dential recycling programfunded by and for the use

    of the residents of thosetownships.

The recycling coordi-nator said that the binsthat have been placed atthe Onekama, Brown, and

Arcadia township halls andthe Betsie Valley School

will give residents theoption of doing recycling24/7 at the bins located inthose areas. However, shestressed that people care-fully read the signs before

depositing their recyclingitems because certainthings go in specific bins.

We plan to get some-thing out here for theplastic grocery bags realsoon and people shouldntput them in with the

bottles, said Pitcher. Itis important to recycleresponsibly as plastic bagsin the recycling bins are acontaminant and will not

    be recycled.Pitcher explained that

the fee does not go to payher wages, but is used

strictly for the cost incurredfor the bins, transporta-tion and processing of thematerials being recycled by

Allied Waste.I am paid by a grant

and this plan with the $12fee is a lot less expensivethan putting out thoseitems in bags by the curb.

Onekama Townshipsupervisor David Meistersaid residents of his town-ship are excited at the pros-pect of having expandedrecycling capabilities. Hesaid the ones they have run

in the past were very wellreceived by the residents.

We have been recyclingfor years, and the townshiphas been paying the bill asit was a community effort, said Meister. We took thenext step with the county, and it is better than ourpast situation as the binslook very nice. We do geta lot of people to recycle, and they have to emptyour cardboard containeronce a week in the summer

because it is so popular.Pitcher said she hopes

the program will growonce the other townshipsget a look at how nice thenew bins look, and see theamount people taking partin it.

We hope it will reallytake off and more people

want to get into recycling, said Pitcher. Hopefully, more townships will wantto recycle once they seehow good it works for thesetownships.

Allied Waste (AT RIGHT) drops off thenew recycling bin in the parking area atthe Onekama Township Hall. ManisteeCounty officials gather with Onekama

Township officials and residents (BELOW)for the opening of the new recycling binsthat will be available at the township hall.Six townships in the county have agreed

to enter into the recyling program.

Last week, the weatherust demanded a strawber-

ry milkshake from Houseof Flavors and who am Ito say no? I took my milk-shake down to my favoritespot at First Street beachand settled in to enjoy it,but I ran into a problem. The strawberries in the icecream kept getting stuckin my straw. I was a littlefrustrated at first, but even-tually I just had to laugh asI thought, Thats a prettygood problem to have. Imdefinitely a glass half fullsort of person, so I startedthinking about other goodproblems to have. Here aresome examples:

More traffic, and morecampers, on U.S. 31 meansI have to drive a littleslower. But its good to seethese folks on their way up

north to spend some timeand money in our com-munity.

I had a hard time carry-ing all the books I boughtat Annes Books on RiverStreet (hardcover best sell-ers in excellent conditionfor just $5), but I managed.

The Maple Street Bridgewas up last week and I wasrunning late for a meeting, but its hard to mind thatwhen I see sailboats andfreighters moving alongthe river. No matter whatthe cargo, I envision themcarrying jobs and moneyinto Manistee. As a bonus, blaming the bridge forbeing late is a universallyaccepted explanation.

Im planting a newflower garden this year in ashady spot in my backyard.I dont know much aboutshade-loving flowers, so Idid some reconnaissance atWeesies last week. It tookforever because there are alot of flowers in that place.Thats a pretty good prob-lem, to wander around for

an hour or so in a green-house full of flowers.

Merchants on RiverStreet have all contributedto what promises to be anenormous Mothers Daygift basket, which one luckyperson will win. (Visit any

    River Street merchant

to enter.) There will bea couple dozen or moreitems and gift certificatesin this basket. The problemis where to find a basket

big enough to hold themall and how the heck is the

winner going to get that bigole basket home?

Its all in how you lookat it, isnt it? Have onlygood problems this week.
