How strange that we should ordinarily feel compelled to hide our wounds when we are all wounded! Community requires the ability to expose our wounds and weaknesses to our fellow creatures.

It also requires the ability to be affected by the wounds of others... But even more important is the love that arises among us when we share, both ways, our woundedness.

*CALL TO WORSHIP inspired by Psalm 62

Our souls wait in silence; our hope rests in God our rock our salvation our refuge. We will not be shaken. In this time of worship, we pour out our hearts because we trust in God’s steadfast love.

CALL TO CONFESSION

In this time of confession, we are invited to consider how we live as followers of Christ – to look at our decisions and our actions straight on, and to hold them up to the example of Christ, and to make amends. In this time of silence, and in our prayer together, let us look at our lives. We pray, first in silence.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy God, Creator of all that is, Donor of Grace, and Giver of Life: Hear our prayer. There are chasms in our lives, deep valleys that separate us From one another and from You. We confess that we have allowed those rifts to grow, For fear of admitting our part in the separation, For fear of being rejected when we reach out. You call us to a reconciled life, to healed relationships, To a wholeness with each other and with You. Mend us, we pray, and make us new creations Through the power and love of Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE

We do not have to have it all figured out. We do not have to be right all the time. We only need to let God’s grace work on us; to let it soften and reshape us. We are molded in community and into community, where the basis of unity is not our conformity, but the love of God for all. My salvation is that I am loved by God no more and no less than my worst enemy. Thanks be to God! Amen.

TIME FOR ALL GOD’S CHILDREN SOLO Great Is Thy Faithfulness FAITHFULNESS Fatima Petersen, soloist PRAYER FOR UNDERSTANDING GOD’S STORY Lamentations 3: 1-3, 17-32; 5: 1-3, 19-22

I am one who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; against me alone he turns his hand, again and again, all day long. My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; so I say, “Gone is my glory, and all that I had hoped for from the Lord.”

Page 6: Welcome to Roland Park Presbyterian Church. We’re glad you ...€¦ · 07/07/2020  · We’re glad you’re here! July 19, 2020 How strange that we should ordinarily feel compelled

The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for one to bear the yoke in youth, to sit alone in silence when the Lord has imposed it, to put one’s mouth to the dust (there may yet be hope), to give one’s cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults. For the Lord will not reject forever. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love. Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace! Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to aliens. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. But you, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations. Why have you forgotten us completely? Why have you forsaken us these many days? Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored; renew our days as of old— unless you have utterly rejected us, and are angry with us beyond measure.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
