What People Want and Need: My Reflections While on Vacation

While vacationing, I sometimes attend Sunday Mass as a “private citizen,” that is, in secular attire, with the congregation and in the pews. Though I truly cherish the privilege of leading the Liturgy, it’s also refreshing once in a while to be on the other side of the altar. Last month, I attended Mass in Honolulu. I found myself joining the Congregation. It’s amazing how quickly I assumed the characteris-tics of what might be considered the “typical Catholic.” I planned my schedule so I wouldn’t arrive at church too early. I sat toward the back of the church. I complained, at least mentally, about the length of the homily. I was not surprised that there was a second collection – but yes, I did pry open my wallet to contribute to both! Forget my need for “full, active and conscious participation.” I was on vacation. I just wanted something short, sweet and to the point, just enough to fulfill my Sunday obligation. Despite this, there were also some more beneficial lessons I learned from sitting in the pews. Doing so created a broader perspective for me and a renewed appreciation for the “faithful” that come to Mass Sunday after Sunday. As I sat, I was gratified by the large number of people who have returned to Sunday Mass. In the congregation were young couples, fami-lies with restless kids and sullen teen-agers, young adults participating silently, senior citizens, and folks with disabilities for whom it was a real personal sacrifice to attend Mass. But there they were! I asked myself: Why do these people come to Mass? What do they want? What do they need? Firstly, I believe that people come to Mass on Sunday to be part of the Christian community. Please understand that by community here I don’t mean a “Hello, my name is ____, what’s yours?” experience, but something far more profound, an ecclesial community. People want to belong to a Church Community to be with and pray with other people who share their faith and their liturgical practice. They want spiritual companions who will break bread with them. Ecclesial community depends on shared vision and values. Secondly, it seems to me that people come to Mass because they long to hear the Word of God preached with conviction and enthusiasm. They want homilies that are doctrinally sound, personally prepared and relevant to contemporary life. It is a frequent complaint that our preaching has lost its spark, its zeal. Good preaching needs to be clear, direct and simple. People seek moral guidance. They want to hear about the Ten Commandments, justice and peace, human life and family relationships, final judgment and eternal salvation. In short, the faithful want preachers to preach as Jesus did, with power and conviction, challenging people and not avoiding difficult issues. People should leave Sunday Mass motivated to live the Gospel throughout the week, and confident they possess the spiritual means to do so. Thirdly, Catholics come to Mass on Sunday because they want to receive the Eucharist. After fourteen months when we were constrained to attend virtual Masses, we can now come to Church and receive the Eucharist. We believe that the Eucharist, a foundational element of Catholic life, really is the Body of Christ. This “Holy Communion” is extremely important for us. It’s true that our celebration and reception of the Eucharist is far too casual at times. Sometimes, we neglect the wonderful presence of Christ in the tabernacles of our Churches. But I don’t think our carelessness is a crisis of faith. Catholics believe in the Eucharist and fully realize how important it is for their spiritual lives. That’s why they keep coming to Mass. Finally, I believe Catholics come to Mass to find sanctuary from the turmoil of daily existence. Our lives are active, busy and noisy. We come to Mass to be refreshed, to find peace, quiet and fulfillment. Catholics come to church on Sundays to pray, to converse with God, not to chit-chat with their neighbors. The church is, or should be, a true sanctuary. The recently revised “General Instruction of the Roman Missal” makes the point: “Even before the celebration itself, it is praiseworthy for silence to be observed in church, in the sacristy and adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves for the sacred rites which are to be enacted in a devout and fitting manner.” (#56) I’m troubled that at times, right in our own Church, we have a free-for-all before Mass, with loud and distracting conversations and laughter, making it nearly impossible for people to pray. Sacred silence is crucial. People have far too much noise in their lives. The pilgrimage to church should be peaceful, restful and refreshing. The Church should be a spiritual oasis in our secular desert. Authentic community, effective preaching, the Eucharist, and sanctuary - these are the things Cath-olics are seeking at Mass on Sunday. It’s what the Church should give them. This is our challenge, as Clergy, as Liturgical Ministers, and as members of the worshipping Community. May we all help one another so that everyone who comes and joins us in our Liturgy feels that they are a part of our Faith Community. May we all work for a conscious and active participation in our Liturgy. Father Andy Ligot Pastor

Civil Discourse “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconcilia-tion? Feast of Faith Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven

The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scriptures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with His glory!’ ” (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with His glory.” But the liturgy proclaims, “heaven and earth are full of your glory.” In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in time, we join in the song that the angels sing for all time. The Sanctus raises us to heaven, but does not remove us from the earth. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

RCIA provides adult instruction on the Faith, and sets a path leading to the three primary sacraments upon which our Christian life is

built: Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist. This is a spiritual journey centered on Jesus Christ and His teachings.

All are welcomed to join RCIA. Adults who received these sacraments in their youth may join RCIA to gain a more ma-ture understanding of the Faith. Pilgrims on this spiritual jour-ney will come closer to our parish community, nurture a com-mitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic Church, and gain a fuller understanding of our Faith.

The Legion of Mary will be celebrating the Centenary of their founding in Dublin, Ireland, with a Novena of Masses beginning August 30 and ending on September 7 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph at 6:00 pm with Bishop Oscar Cantú presiding. Điều mọi người Muốn và Cần: Những suy tư (của tôi) trong những ngày hè.

Khi đi nghỉ hè, đôi khi tôi tham dự Thánh lễ Chúa nhật với tư cách là một “người giáo dân”, nghĩa là, trong trang phục bình thường, với cộng đoàn và ngồi ở các băng ghế. Mặc dù tôi rất trân trọng đặc ân là một Linh mục, người dẫn dắt Phụng vụ của mình, nhưng thỉnh thoảng tôi cảm thấy thoải mái khi đóng vai trò là người giáo dân.

Tháng trước, tôi đã tham dự Thánh lễ ở Honolulu. Tôi tự hoà nhập vào với cộng đoàn. Thật thú vị khi tôi nhanh chóng mang lấy các tính cách được coi là của “người Công giáo điển hình”. Tôi dự trù đến nhà thờ trễ. Tôi ngồi về phía cuối nhà thờ. Tôi đã phàn nàn, ít nhất là trong lòng, về bài giảng dài. Tôi chẳng ngạc nhiên cho lần thâu tiền lần thứ hai - đúng vậy, tôi đã móc bóp đóng góp cho cả hai lần thâu tiền! Quên rằng mình cần phải “tham gia đầy đủ, tích cực và có ý thức.” Vì tôi đang mùa nghỉ hè mà. Nên tôi muốn ngắn gọn, thoải mái và đúng mức, vừa đủ để chu toàn bổn phận giữ ngày Chủ nhật của mình.

Dầu sao tôi cũng đã rút ra được một số bài học bổ ích khi ngồi ở hàng ghế giáo dân. Khi ở cương vị đó tôi đã có một cái nhìn bao quát hơn và một sự đánh giá mới đối với “các tín hữu” đến tham dự Thánh lễ vào các ngày Chúa Nhật.

Khi ngồi trong nhà thờ, tôi rất vui vì số giáo dân tham dự thánh lễ Chủ Nhật rất đông. Trong cộng đoàn có những cặp vợ chồng trẻ, những gia đình với các em nhỏ không quậy phá, và các em thanh thiếu niên vui tươi, các thanh niên tham dự nghiêm trang, đối với các cụ già và những người cao niên, khuyết tật, việc tham dự Thánh lễ thực sự là cả một sự hy sinh. Tất cả họ đã cùng đến đó để dâng lễ! Tôi tự hỏi: Tại sao những người này lại đến tham dự Thánh lễ? Họ muốn gì? Họ cần gì?

Thứ nhất, tôi tin rằng mọi người đến tham dự Thánh lễ Chủ nhật là một phần của cộng đồng Kytô hữu. tham dự Thánh lễ Chủ nhật để trở nên một thành phần của Cộng đoàn Kytô hữu. Về điều này xin hãy hiểu khái niệm ‘Cộng đoàn” ở đây, không có ý nói chỉ là câu chào hỏi: “Xin chào, tên tôi là ____, tên bạn là gì? ” như vẫn thường làm, nhưng nên hiểu một cái gì đó sâu sắc hơn nhiều, một Cộng Đồng Giáo Hội. Mọi người muốn thuộc về một Cộng đồng Giáo hội để ở cùng nhau và cầu nguyện với những người cùng chia sẻ một đức tin và cử hành phụng vụ. Họ muốn hiệp thông cùng nhau, sẽ cùng bẻ một tấm bánh. Cộng đồng Giáo hội dựa trên cùng một nhãn quan và những giá trị (đạo đức).

Thứ hai, đối với tôi, dường như mọi người đến tham dự Thánh lễ vì họ khao khát được nghe Lời Chúa, được rao giảng với lòng xác tín và nhiệt thành. Họ muốn những bài giảng phù hợp về mặt giáo lý, được chuẩn bị kỹ lưỡng và phù hợp với cuộc sống đương đại. Thường có những phàn nàn rằng việc rao giảng của chúng tôi đã mất đi sự sôi nổi, lòng nhiệt thành. Lời rao giảng hữu hiệu cần phải rõ ràng, thẳng thắn và đơn giản. Mọi người tìm kiếm sự hướng dẫn về mặt đạo đức. Họ muốn nghe về Mười Điều Răn, Công lý và Hòa bình, cuộc sống con người và các mối quan hệ gia đình, sự phán xét cuối cùng và sự cứu rỗi đời đời. Nói tóm lại, các tín hữu muốn những người rao giảng phải rao giảng như Chúa Giê-su đã rao giảng, với quyền năng và sự xác tín, thách thức mọi người và không né tránh những vấn đề khó khăn. Mọi người khi ra về sau Thánh Lễ Chúa Nhật được thúc đẩy để sống Phúc Âm trong suốt cả tuần, và tin tưởng rằng họ có đủ phương tiện thiêng liêng để sống như vậy.

Thứ ba, người Công giáo đến dâng lễ ngày Chúa nhật vì muốn rước Thánh Thể. Sau mười bốn tháng chúng ta bị hạn chế chỉ được tham dự Thánh lễ trên mạng, giờ đây chúng ta đã có thể đến Nhà thờ và rước Mình Thánh Chúa thực sự. Chúng ta tin rằng Bí tích Thánh Thể, một yếu tố nền tảng của đời sống Công giáo, thực sự là Mình Chúa Kitô. “Sự Rước Lễ” này vô cùng quan trọng đối với chúng ta. Đúng là đôi khi chúng ta quá coi thường việc cử hành và đón nhận Thánh Thể. Đôi khi, chúng ta quên đi sự hiện diện tuyệt vời của Chúa Kitô nơi nhà tạm trong các nhà thờ. Nhưng tôi không nghĩ rằng sự thờ ơ của chúng ta là một cuộc khủng hoảng niềm tin. Người Công giáo tin vào Bí tích Thánh Thể và hoàn toàn nhận thức được tầm quan trọng của Bí Tích này đối với đời sống tinh thần của họ. Đó là lý do tại sao họ tiếp tục đến tham dự Thánh lễ.

Cuối cùng, tôi tin rằng những người Công giáo đến tham dự Thánh lễ mong tìm thấy sự trang nghiêm thoát khỏi sự hỗn loạn của cuộc sống hàng ngày. Cuộc sống của chúng ta xô bồ, bận rộn và ồn ào. Chúng ta đến tham dự Thánh lễ để được đổi mới, để tìm thấy sự bình an, tĩnh lặng và viên mãn. Người Công giáo đến nhà thờ vào Chủ nhật để cầu nguyện, trò chuyện với Chúa, không tán gẫu với hàng xóm.

Nhà thờ, phải thực sự là một nơi thánh thiện. “Quy chế tổng quát Sách lễ Rôma” được sửa đổi gần đây cũng đã lưu ý về điểm này: “Ngay trước khi cử hành Thánh lễ, rất nên giữ thinh lặng trong nhà thờ, trong phòng thánh và trong những nơi gần cận, để mọi người dọn lòng cử hành các mầu nhiệm thánh cách sốt sắng và đúng phép. " (English version # 56 – Vietnamese version # 46). Tôi cảm thây khó chịu với chuyện này, ngay tại nhà thờ của chúng ta, trước mỗi thánh lễ chúng ta có một chút thời gian trống, chúng ta nói chuyện to tiếng thoải mái trước Thánh lễ, những cuộc trò chuyện ồn ào, mất tập trung và cười đùa, khiến mọi người gần như không thể cầu nguyện, hồi tâm trước khi cử hành Phụng vụ thánh. Con người quá ồn ào trong cuộc sống. Việc đến nhà thờ phải thực sự yên bình, thư thái và sảng khoái. Nhà thờ phải là một ốc đảo tâm linh giữa sa mạc trần tục của chúng ta. Cộng đồng đích thực, sự rao giảng hiệu quả, Bí tích Thánh Thể, và nơi tôn nghiêm - đây là những điều mà người Công giáo đang tìm kiếm khi đến tham dự Thánh lễ ngày Chúa nhật. Đó là những gì Giáo hội nên cung cấp cho họ.

Đây là một thách thức không chỉ đối với chúng ta, những Giáo sĩ, nhưng với tất cả các Thừa tác viên Phụng vụ, và với tư cách là thành viên của Cộng đồng Phụng vụ. (1V 19,4-8; Ep 4,30-5,2; Ga 6,41-51) Bài đọc 1: 1V 19,4-8 Bài đọc sau đây thuật lại Thiên Chúa ban lương thực cho ngôn sứ Êlia ăn, để đủ sức đi đến núi Hô-rép. Người cũng thương ban thần lương cho chúng ta trên đường về Quê Trời. Bài đọc 2: Ep 4,30-5,2 Là con cái Chúa, chúng ta phải nhờ Chúa Thánh Thần hướng dẫn, sống bác ái yêu thương, tránh mọi hành vi gian ác. Ðó là lời Thánh Phaolô khuyên bảo chúng ta sau đây. Lo que la gente quiere y necesita: Mis reflexiones durante las vacaciones

Mientras estoy de vacaciones, a veces asisto a la Misa dominical como un "ciudadano privado", es decir, con atuendo secular, con la congregación y en los bancos. Aunque realmente aprecio el privilegio de dirigir la liturgia, también es refrescante de vez en cuando estar del otro lado del altar.

El mes pasado asistí a Misa en Honolulu. Me encontré uniéndome a la Congregación. Es sorprendente lo rápido que asumí las características de lo que podría considerarse el "católico típico". Planeé mi horario para no llegar demasiado temprano a la iglesia. Me senté hacia la parte trasera de la iglesia. Me quejé, al menos mentalmente, de la duración de la homilía. No me sorprendió que hubiera una segunda colección, pero sí, ¡abrí mi billetera para contribuir a ambas! Olvídese de mi necesidad de "participación plena, activa y consciente". Estaba de vacaciones. Solo quería algo corto, dulce y directo, lo suficiente para cumplir con mi obligación dominical. A pesar de esto, también aprendí algunas lecciones más beneficiosas al sentarme en los bancos.

Hacerlo creó una perspectiva más amplia para mí y un agradecimiento renovado por los “fieles” que vienen a Misa domingo tras domingo. Mientras me sentaba, me complació la gran cantidad de personas que habían regresado a la Misa dominical. En la congregación había parejas jóvenes, familias con niños inquietos y adolescentes hoscos, adultos jóvenes que participaban en silencio, personas de la tercera edad y personas con discapacidades para para quienes fue un verdadero sacrificio personal asistir a Misa. ¡Pero ahí estaban! Me pregunté: ¿Por qué viene esta gente a misa? ¿Qué quieren ellos? ¿Que necesitan?

En primer lugar, creo que la gente viene a Misa los domingos para formar parte de la comunidad cristiana. Por favor, comprenda que por comunidad aquí no me refiero a un "Hola, mi nombre es ____, ¿cuál es el tuyo?" experiencia, pero algo mucho más profundo, una comunidad eclesial. La gente quiere pertenecer a una comunidad eclesial para estar y rezar con otras personas que comparten su fe y su práctica litúrgica. Quieren compañeros espirituales que compartan el pan con ellos. La comunidad eclesial depende de una visión y valores compartidos.

En segundo lugar, me parece que la gente viene a misa porque anhela escuchar la Palabra de Dios predicada con convicción y entusiasmo. Quieren homilías que sean doctrinalmente sólidas, preparadas personalmente y relevantes para la vida contemporánea. Es una queja frecuente que nuestra predicación ha perdido su chispa, su celo. La buena predicación debe ser clara, directa y sencilla. La gente busca orientación moral. Quieren escuchar acerca de los Diez Mandamientos, la justicia y la paz, la vida humana y las relaciones familiares, el juicio final y la salvación eterna. En resumen, los fieles quieren que los predicadores prediquen como lo hizo Jesús, con poder y convicción, desafiando a las personas y sin evitar temas difíciles. Las personas deben salir de la misa dominical motivadas a vivir el Evangelio durante toda la semana y confiando en que poseen los medios espirituales para hacerlo.

En tercer lugar, los católicos vienen a Misa el domingo porque quieren recibir la Eucaristía. Después de catorce meses en los que nos vimos obligados a asistir a misas virtuales, ahora podemos ir a la Iglesia y recibir la Eucaristía. Creemos que la Eucaristía, elemento fundamental de la vida católica, es realmente el Cuerpo de Cristo. Esta “Sagrada Comunión” es extremadamente importante para nosotros. Es cierto que nuestra celebración y recepción de la Eucaristía a veces es demasiado informal. A veces, descuidamos la maravillosa presencia de Cristo en los tabernáculos de nuestras iglesias. Pero no creo que nuestro descuido sea una crisis de fe. Los católicos creen en la Eucaristía y se dan cuenta de lo importante que es para sus vidas espirituales. Por eso siguen viniendo a misa.

Finalmente, creo que los católicos vienen a misa para encontrar un santuario de la confusión de la existencia diaria. Nuestras vidas son activas, ocupadas y ruidosas. Venimos a Misa para refrescarnos, para encontrar paz, tranquilidad y plenitud. Los católicos vienen a la iglesia los domingos para orar, para conversar con Dios, no para charlar con sus vecinos. La iglesia es, o debería ser, un verdadero santuario. La "Instrucción General del Misal Romano" recientemente revisada señala: "Incluso antes de la celebración misma, es digno de elogio que se guarde el silencio en la iglesia, en la sacristía y áreas adyacentes, para que todos puedan disponerse a los ritos sagrados". que deben ser promulgadas de una manera devota y apropiada ". (# 56) Me preocupa que a veces, justo en nuestra propia Iglesia, tengamos una fiesta libre para todos antes de la Misa, con conversaciones y risas fuertes y que distraen, lo que hace que sea casi imposible para la gente orar. El silencio sagrado es crucial. Las personas tienen demasiado ruido en sus vidas. La peregrinación a la iglesia debe ser pacífica, relajante y refrescante. La Iglesia debería ser un oasis espiritual en nuestro desierto secular. Comunidad auténtica, predicación eficaz, la Eucaristía y el santuario: estas son las cosas que los católicos buscan en la misa del domingo. Es lo que la Iglesia debería darles. P. Andy C. Nuestra Señora de Fátima Por favor marquen sus calendarios para el 13 de agosto de 2021. Cada día 13 en los meses de mayo a octubre, tendremos una Misa trilingüe a las 6:30 de la noche y una procesión mariana en honor a Nuestra Señora de Fátima. La comunidad vietnamita encabezará la Misa este 13 de agosto y la procesión mariana. Terminamos nuestra celebración con una sencilla recepción. Todos están invitados.

Ritual de la Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos

Invitamos a las personas adultas que deseen recibir los sacramentos de iniciación cristia-na, que incluyen el bautismo, la confir-mación y la primera comunión, a participar en las sesiones de RICA (Ritual de la Ini-ciación Cristiana de Adultos) en nuestra parroquia St.Elizabeth. Las sesiones semanales comenzarán el martes 21 de septiembre a las 7:00PM en el edificio del centro ministeri-al (PMC).

También son bienvenidas las personas que habiendo recibido sus sacramentos de iniciación se alejaron de nuestra Madre Iglesia Católica y desean volver a casa. Igualmente son bienvenidas las personas que desean fortalecer y defender su fe católica con una catequesis adulta ante los retos de una sociedad y mundo adultos.
