19TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

I am fortunate enough in my life to have never wanted to “pray for death” as Elijah did. I have never asked God to “Take my life.” I have said to God though, “This is enough, O Lord!” Spoiler alert, I am fairly certain in my exasperation that “O Lord” is not the name I referred to God as. The New Yorker/New Englander in me probably came out. Prayer to me is communication with God. It can be flowery, composed prayers “Angel of God my (Cleveland) Guardian dear.” Or it can be conversational. “Please let Timmy not keep falling down the well. Lassie can only do so much without opposable thumbs.” My conversations with God can be asking for things calmly, or they can be….well….not done calmly. I would often feel guilty about what my prayer was. Rather...how I expressed myself in

communication. A wise priest once said to me, “Ted, there is nothing that God can’t handle.” He was wise but wasn’t good at names. “God will be able to catch what is thrown by you, Brian.” I’d never heard that before. Not just being called the wrong name twice, but to be let known that I could pray to God and throw back to God frustrations. This is not to say that you should intentionally be mean or a jerk to God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or whichever part of the Trinity you most relate to while praying. In the midst of Elijah’s angst, he was quite literally in a desert, he found a broom tree to sit under. A broom tree is not large. This is not a family picnic tree. Nor does it actually have modern day brooms on it. The Amelia Bedelia lover in me was disappointed. The broom tree doesn’t give you a lot of shade. But it gives you what you need. I think it is wise for all of us, and me (Ted/Brian) to remember that God isn’t just a punching bag. As easy as it is for me to blame God for the bad things, if you are only going to God with your problems, how could your relationship with God be anything but negative? There needs to be an equilibrium. How often do you stop and thank God for the blessings and good things in your life? When Elijah slept under that tree, when he awoke a thing occurred that I’ve always wanted to happen to me: there was cake. For me. To eat. If the angel brought a side of buttercream, that would have been, well, even more heaven on Earth. Allowing God into his life, and putting his faith and life in his hands, Elijah went from praying for death to being able to make a 40 day journey to the mountain of God. If nothing else, please remember two things: 1.) God isn’t just a punching bag but can give you so many good things and blessings if only you’re open to it. 2.) Cake is a super food and should be treated accordingly. Take it from me, your liturgy/music director Ted/Brian.

The FEST 2021

TODAY - Sunday, August 8 @ 12:00pm

Held at Brookside Reservation, 3900 John Nagy Blvd, Cleveland, Ohio After a year of being tossed about in the storm, our future is bright and hopeful because the Lord is with us. He said to those earlier followers (and each of us), “Take Courage, it is I.” We can walk forward into a bright and hopeful future not because the storm or the pandemic has passed, our courage and our hope come from the

Lord. Join us Sunday, August 8 as we walk together into a future full of hope and promise! This daylong celebration of faith, family and fun will mark its 21st anniversary this year and will have both in-person and at-home options. For more information, visit The FEST's website.

Bring your lawn chair and join us behind the parish center for an evening of praise and worship. This event is hosted by Catholic Renewal Ministries. The next Praise Festival at St. Peter's is on August 28 at 7:00 pm.
