Welcome to UH!

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services recognizes the critical role that parents play in their students’ educational experience. We believe that establishing positive relationships with parents and family members is an important factor in the continued success of our students. Each fall, we invite parents and family members of our undergraduate students to campus for a weekend of activities and programs. This weekend offers a variety of academic, social, athletic and cultural events. It’s a wonderful opportunity for parents and family members to reconnect with their

students and see first-hand what student life is like at the University of Houston. We’ve continued to expand the variety of activities including academic college-sponsored sessions as well as continuing the traditions of our Family Game Day Celebration, Family Picnic, and the Friday Night Concert series sponsored by the Student Programming Board. For the first time, Family Weekend will also coincide with UH Homecoming, which offers parents and family members the opportunity to experience two annual campus traditions in the same weekend. We are proud to have you and your students on campus this weekend, and we hope that you enjoy our growing campus community. Welcome to Family Weekend!

We are thrilled you will be able to spend some time on our campus and learn more about your students’ life here at the University of Houston. This program has everything you need to help you plan your weekend including the schedule of events, information for getting around campus, and tips for game-day.

To help make the most of your visit, here are a few fun tips:

Attend a session or program at one of the academic colleges. This is a great opportunity to see what your student is experiencing in the classroom.

Try new things. There’s a variety of activities available during the weekend, from Zumba class to museum tours, experience something new with your student!

Meet and mingle. Attend receptions, talk to other parents and meet campus administrators and faculty members. These people are resources that are here for you throughout the weekend!

Get to know your student’s friends. You may even plan for a group of friends and their families to attend a meal or event together.

Check out the campus facilities. The pool is open, why not go for a swim or be adventurous and climb the rock-wall! Roam around the bookstore, visit nature nooks on campus and soak it all in.

Put yourself in visitor mode. You’re on your student’s turf this weekend. Let them take the lead and show you their place with pride.

Campus Information Family Headquarters If you have questions, need assistance, or just want to take a break, please stop by our Family Headquarters located in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. This is the same location where you pick up your registration packet. Family Headquarters will be open Friday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. If you need assistance on Saturday afternoon, we will have an information table set up at the Family Game Day Celebration located at Lynn Eusan Park from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Wristbands Admission to all activities requires a Family Weekend wristband. Please wear this wrist-band throughout the entire weekend, any person without one may be excluded from events. Damaged or lost wristbands can be replaced at the Family Headquarters located in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. or Saturday at the Family Game Day Celebration from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Campus Dining Services Dining Halls There are two residential dining centers on campus: Fresh Food Company in Moody Towers and Real Foods Company in Cougar Woods. These dining centers offer an all-you-can-eat, buffet style atmosphere with menu choices to please every appetite. Meal prices for these dining centers are: breakfast - $6.75, lunch - $7.75, dinner - $8.75 (plus taxes). Remember to pick up your dining coupons when you check-in! See the UH Dining maps on pages 5-6 for additional dining locations on Campus.

Campus Shuttle

Campus Shuttle Services are available for you to use on Friday until 9 p.m.

Parking information Parking on campus is available in lots 20A, 20C and 21B. Exit Spur 5; turn right on University Dr. then at the stop sign turn right (by the Pizza Hut and Murphy’s Deli). The parking lots are directly on your right across the street from the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Please make sure that you do NOT park in Lot 21A as you will be towed. You may also choose to park in the East or Welcome Center Parking Garage for $9 per day or by the hour. On Saturday, you can park in the East or Welcome Center Garage for $3 for the entire day.

We strive to host a variety of events that will appeal to a wide array of interests, so there may be some sessions scheduled at the same time. Please note, some departments are also hosting “on-going” events throughout the entire weekend, these are great departments to visit in your free

Campus Community Garden The Campus Community Garden at UH teaches students how to garden organically while giving back to the community by providing healthy produce to local food banks. Participants will sample food from the garden, receive a tour and brief history of the garden and have the opportunity to learn the “ins-and-outs” of managing a garden including weeding, planting, seeding and harvesting of the produce. Participants will gain a better understanding of agricultural sustainability and receive some fresh herbs to take home to remember this experience! Sponsored by the Office of Sustainability

Special Exhibition (opens this weekend!): Scenes from the Stone Age: The Cave Paintings of Lascaux This international exhibition brings together state-of-the-art digital technologies in order to make the visit interactive and unforgettable—simulators of human presence, virtual trips using the most advanced 3D projections, interactive terminals as well as multimedia and a model of the cave. You will then come face to face in a unique and unforgettable meeting with a Cro-Magnon family and observe the artists of Lascaux preparing their tools and then painting and engraving the walls of the cave.

Getting Game Day Ready

What to Expect at the Family Tailgate Enjoy a family-oriented tailgate experience in the Lynn Eusan Park located to the right of the UH Hilton directly in front of Cougar Village I and II. We will provide traditional tailgate food as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Feel free to bring games, cards or anything else as this is a great time to socialize and cheer on the UH team before the big game! This event is open to ALL Family Weekend participants and is not dependent on you attending the game. UH Alumni Game-Watching Party If you are not planning on going to the game, UH fans are invited to the following locations to cheer on the Coogs! Watch Party closest to UH campus in Houston Mid-town area

Getting to Reliant Stadium Driving directions (from Campus Recreation and Wellness Center):

Go West on University Drive toward Calhoun Rd (going towards campus)

Take 1st left onto Calhoun Road (UH Hilton College is on the corner)

Stay straight to go onto Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Turn right onto Old Spanish Trail (will stay on this for about 5 miles)

Turn left onto Kirby Drive

Reliant Stadium is on the left at 8400 Kirby Dr. UH Shuttle Buses Shuttle pick up and drop off will be located at the University Center circle drive located across the street from the Family Game Day Celebration. Only individuals wearing their Family Weekend wristband will be allowed on the bus to and from the game. Shuttle ser-vice to the stadium will begin running three hours prior to the game and cease at kickoff.

Shuttle service returning back to campus will begin at the start of the third quarter and will continue for 30 minutes following the game. STADIUM PARKING Parking lot gates open four hours prior to kickoff. Reliant Stadium parking lots close one hour after the completion of the game. Cash parking is available for $10 day of game in the following lots: North Kirby Red Lot (2, 4, 5), South Kirby Blue Lot (20-27) and the Westridge Green Lot (28-29) Student parking is located in the purple McNee Lot for $5 for the first 900 vehicles with UH Student ID. Once the purple McNee Lot is filled, students will be able to park in gen-eral public parking areas, however the parking price will not be discounted for students. Due to limited student parking, carpooling and early arrival are strongly encouraged. HANDICAP PARKING will be directed to the nearest handicap space upon entering lot. Handicap parking is $10 for cash parking. The person possessing the Texas Disabled Person Parking placard or plate must also be in the vehicle to park in a space reserved for guests with disabilities.
