RuthBerry, is one ofmanymade by support-ers ofMilo, a dog that was impounded by theAtlantis Animal Pound for biting and per-manently damaging a child’s hand.The child, Joline Janse vanRensburg,was

visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waiting

in his car, jumped out and he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

but Joline is still in shock. Not only couldshenotwrite herGr 11 final exam, the injuryhas also left herwith anugly scar. Joline lostfeeling in part of her right hand ... as wellas all her friends.Joline has become a victim in a Facebook

Rensburg family were rife and on anotherpublic Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan, said“Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’ weg-neem”.She also posted the cellphone number of

the law enforcement officer in charge of theimpoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-

phone number of Joline’s father so that peo-ple can direct their anger to them in personin order to release Milo.

TraumaOn17December, someoneposted this com-

ment: “This 16-year-old girl must be pun-ished for causing poor Milo all the trauma& suffering!“If it wasn’t for her irresponsible actions

this would never have happened!”The Janse vanRensburg family did not re-

spond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything.In the process they came across two other

people who have been bitten by Milo in thepast and commentsmade by Jordaan on sev-eral occasions prior to this incident, askingadvice about her dog’s aggressive behav-iour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’ moth-

er, says they do not want to make a decisionabout the life of the dog.“The lawmust take its course, but the fact

is our child is innocent. She is the one whogot bitten here.“We did not want to do it the media way,

we rely on what’s right. If I take part in thisdebate on social media, people will attackme.”The campaign has also taken a political

turn: “Weare starting a twitter storm tohelpsave Milo. If you are on twitter please tweet@helenzille to send Milo home and get yourfollowers to retweet,” one of the organisersof the campaign posted on the “Causes”web-site.Several people threatened not to vote DA

if Milo was not released.On 13 January, Milo was released and re-

turned to his owner.“Thematter was first brought tomy atten-

tion during middle December. By the timeit was submitted to me there had alreadybeen a lot of water under the bridge and afair amount of tension had arisen as certaincomments had been made on social mediaabout the injured girl,” says Richard Bos-man, head of safety and security for the Cityof Cape Town, who ordered Milo’s release.He says he opened communication with

“Despite all the raised emotions and the pos-sibility of civil as well as criminal litigation,my sole focus was to consider the request bythe owner of the dog to not have it destroyed.Representations in this regard were made tome by Ms Jordaan’s attorneys, which I pro-vided to the complainant’s father to get hisview. He indicated in an email that this wasnot his business and that the decision wasmine to make,” Bosman says.

He added that Jordaan had complied withthe request to fence in the property properlyand to have the bell, which was on the insideof the fence, moved. He says his decision wasalso influenced by the fact that the incidenthad not happened on a public road and thatJoline did not raise an objection to havingthe dog released.

“In addition the complainant had alreadylaid criminal charges at the police which iscurrently under investigation. My decisiondid not and cannot impact upon and crimi-

nal or civil litigation the party wishes to in-stitute. In terms of the bylaw the magistratestill has the authority to order the destruc-tion of the dog.

“In terms of the other complaints, this hadhappened some time before and none of thecomplainants had made personal contactwith me on the matter,” Bosman said in astatement.

Shortly after Milo’s release, Sharne Jor-daan posted on the Facebook page of K9 Obe-dience training centre and kennels: “I wasthinking for a while now to take my dog forthe on-board training classes (four-weekcourse) he has never been trained before andis three years four months old on 5 January.He’s a Dalmation cross labrador breed andvery clever, loves food, treats, toys, and espe-cially the water (swimming), he can be a bitaggressive only sometimes, but I feel the obe-dience training will do Milo good. The Parow police made 35 arrests between13 and 17 January, for crimes ranging fromhousebreaking, theft, drunken driving, pos-session of drugs, perjury, shoplifting andpossession of housebreaking implements.

On Monday 13 January, Parow detectiveWarrant Officer JP Louw was busy inter-viewing a complainant about a business rob-bery case in his office. During the interviewthe investigating officer took down a writtenstatement from the complainant and discov-ered discrepancies in the complainant’s

statement.The investigating officer then found that

the complainant gave a false account of whatreally happened at the business robbery.

The suspect was immediately arrestedand charged with perjury. He was placed incustody and appeared in the Bellville Magis-trate’s Court.

On Saturday 11 January, at approximately22:20, the owner of 41 Amsterdam Street,Avondale in Parow discovered that herhome had been broken into. There was a big

hole in her ceiling. She did not see anybodyinside the house.

The following Monday, she went back toher home and discovered items from thehouse missing. She called the Parow police.They responded immediately and arrestedthe suspect who was hiding in a wendyhouse on the premises. Schools in the northern district of the north-ern suburbs (Brackenfell, Kraaifontein,Durbanville and Bellville North) escapedthe bulk of vandalism during the past De-cember holidays, with only three minor inci-dents reported.

The remainder of the city and provincesuffered 38 reported cases of burglary andvandalism, of which four were major.

Damages at this stage amounts to half amillion rand, with the final costs still to bedetermined.

“I find it very disturbing that people areprepared to damage a school classroom orsteal resources that are meant to teachyoung learners. The R500 000 spent on re-pairs and replacement of equipment couldhave been spent on textbooks and readers,or on new technology,” Minister of Educa-tion in the Western Cape, Donald Grant re-sponded on Friday.

The Cape Winelands District had 11 re-ported cases, followed by Metro East (KuilsRiver, Bellville South and Elsies River area)with eight and Metro South (southern sub-urbs) with five cases. The West Coast districtreported only one case.

The worst case reported, according toGrant was at Joe Slovo Secondary in Khay-elitsha, where the damage to two science lab-oratories and several classrooms was exten-sive.

In most cases, these schools had alarm sys-tems. And in others, 24-hour security.

“While we can try to safeguard our schoolswith additional security measures, we can-not win the fight against school burglaryand vandalism without community supportas schools, given their extensive physical in-frastructure, are difficult areas to secure.”

On enquiry the department declined toidentify the names of the schools vandalised.

A tale of love and the ocean wide

Emilio and Tina celebrate 70 years of marriage, together with their South African greatgrandchildren Justin, Kayleigh and Emilie, who all attend Panorama Primary School.

“I am on my nerves,” says Emilio deSousa,whohas beena fearless skip-per for 61 years. He is a healthy

man, but the interviewhas him trembling.“What do you want to talk about?”Emilio (93) and Justina de Sousa (89)

weremarried inLisbon, Portugal on 26De-cember 1943. Today, they are still holdinghands on the couch of their daughter Mar-ia Wilson’s house in Welgelegen, wherethey stay.On 26 December 2013, they had been

married for 70 years. They celebrated it ata Bloubergstrand restaurant overlookingthe sea with 15 family members: children,grandchildren and great-grandchildren.“I come froma small village north of Lis-

bon. When I was 17, my father fell ill andwe had to move to the city. The next thingI know, we were living next to ’Tina. Shewas 13 then, andwe started looking at eachother. Two years later, I asked her fatherpermission to talk to her.He said no. Even-tually I did talk to her, and my future fa-ther in lawbecameoneofmybest friends,”says Emilio.

Tied the knotEmilio and Justina were married when

she was 19 and he 22.“We had about 40 guests at our wed-

ding,” says Justina. “They were mostlyfamily. In those times we did not have bigweddings, the money was not so much.”On the day of thewedding, Emilio and Jus-tina’s parents took them to see a show inLisbon, after which they escorted them tothe apartment where they were going tolive. There, Justina’s parents handed herover to Emilio.Eight daysafter thewedding,Emiliohad

to go to sea to further his training as anapprentice officer on passenger liners.Justina spent her time working on her

trousseau and making dresses. “I sewed alot. I had a beautiful trousseau. I did all theembroidery myself.” She carried on doingneedlework formanyyears, until in recentyears she was unable to continue, due tofailing health.They had two children, a daughter and

a son, born in Portugal and in 1966 theymoved to Cape Town. They moved arounda lot through the years, due to Emilio’swork commitments. They stayed for anumber of years in Monte Vista and Mos-sel Bay and now reside inWelgelegenwiththeir daughter, Maria.Their son, Jacinto, went back to Lisbon

as an adult to follow a marine career, anddaughter Maria studied at UCT and be-came a music teacher in Pinelands formany years.The De Sousa family have a long history

with Southern Africa. On 11 August 1916,the famous Cutty Sark, one of the last sail-ing ships to be built before steam shipswere introduced to the world, suffered astorm in Agulhas, lost a mast and had tobe towed to Cape Town for repairs. Theship was under command of Emilio’s un-

cle, Frederico Viera de Sousa.Emilio’s father, Jacinto Viera de Sousa,

who was a chief engineer in shipping, movedto Maputo to settle in the marine repair busi-ness in 1915. After World War II, the familywent back to Portugal.Throughouther life, Justinahad tomanage

without her husband for long periods whilehe was at sea, but her children, grandchil-dren and later great-grandchildren kept herbusy. Emilio only retired when he was 80.

Family valuesShe visited Portugal a few times, and once

her mother, Clotilde da Silva, came to CapeTown for a four month visit, after Justina’sfather, Arturda Purificazzo died. “After thefour months, my mother went back to Portu-gal and died too, within a month. She missedmy father too much.“They were very close. My father was a

lieutenant in the navy, a fantastic man. Andmy mother was a fantastic mother as well,”says Justina.They shy away from talking about them-

selves, but Emilio is keen to boast about his

grandfather who once received a letterfrom the Duke of Braganza in Portugal.“My grandfather, captain Antonio José deSousa, once took the prince and princessofPortugal onaboat trip out ofLisbon.Theprincess’ hat blew off and my grandfathergave her his captain’s cap.“The ship was under his command. The

prince wrote him a letter of thanks after-wards,” he says, and shows me the letter,written in black ink on yellowed paper ina neat, Portuguese hand.The couple’s 10-year-old great-grandson,

JustinBotes,who is a learner at PanoramaPrimary is in turn, equally proud of Emi-lio.“Here is an interesting fact,” he says.

“My great-grandfather was the captain ofthe Dias-memorial caravel.”As amember of the society ofMasterMa-

riners in 1986, Emilio initiated the buil-ding of a replica of the sailing ship Bartho-lomeus Dias used to sail around the sout-hern tip of Africa in 1488.The replica ship is in the Maritime Mu-

seum, Mossel Bay.


The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Serv-ices Department has commenced an end-of-life replacement project for electricitymeters.This project will initially focus on end-

of-life prepayment meters but will be ex-panded later to replace some of the oldercredit meters in the Greater Cape Townarea. Eskomsupply areas arenot includedin this project.The design life of prepayment meters is

approximately 20 years and the field fail-ures of these older meters have reachedthe stage where planned replacement isrequired. Approximately 10 % of prepay-mentmeters currently qualify for replace-ment and the areas initially targeted will

be those where the density of oldermetersis the highest.The city has appointedElexKhanyisa to

do these replacements over the next threeyears.If a meter needs to be replaced, a notice

will be delivered to the premises to re-quest an appointment for meter replace-ment. Details of the notice will be availa-ble to the City Call Centre staff, should thecustomerwish to confirm the authenticityof the correspondence. Staff will carry IDcards and use marked vehicles. Electricity meters replaced

In order to support rape victims, Run/WalkForLife, Tygerberg, has teamedupwith theJes Foord Foundation in a “Donate a Hand-bag” campaign.Anybody can donate a handbag, new or

used, with items like soap, deodorant, achocolate or soft toy inside.The Jes Foord Foundation opened its

doors in 2009 in KwaZulu-Natal, followingthe brutal gang rape of Jes Foord by fourmen.Jes’s aim was to start an organisation

that would improve the compassionatetreatment of rape survivors at each step inthe process, to restore lives after rape andto educate people about the realities of rapein South Africa.The Foundation does this by offering free

ongoing counselling to rape survivors,founding Rape Crisis Care Centres wherevictims receive medical treatment andtrauma counselling free of charge. In addi-tion, they provide motivational talks toschools, corporates and communitygroups, stressing rape prevention and

awareness.“The Handbag Project gives handbags

full of much-needed supplies to rape vic-tims at a critical point in their journey tobecoming a survivor. Rape survivors aretold not to shower or clean after a rape, astheir body is a crime scene and cleaningwill wash away the evidence,” says Magdavan Zyl, manager of the Tygerberg Run/Walk for Life.“After hours of remaining in this condi-

tion, through themedical examand the giv-ing of a police statement, the first thing asurvivorwill say sheneeds is to bath, to feelclean,” she says.The handbagswill be filledwith personal

supplies like shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, and lotion that not onlyhelps the sur-vivor to feel clean again, but helps her feelspecial and restores her dignity. Die dokters het gesê hulle wil nie ope-reer nie, omdat dit te riskant was. Die kansop oorlewing was net 50 % en die kans datso ’n operasie hom sou verlam, was bynagewaarborg.

Nou mag Stefan nie meer fietsry of enigestrawwe oefening doen nie. Sedertdienword hy behandel vir die hoofpyne wat hyal vir jare kry. Party dae moet hy tot 24 pil-le drink.

In Augustus verlede jaar het Stefan weer’n soortgelyke aanval gekry toe hy saammet sy pa vir ’n naweek Springbok toe was.

Dit is toe dat hy so baie skool gemis het.“Daar is nie baie ouers wat kan sê dat

“Die dokters wou eers nie hê ek moet te-ruggaan skool toe of eksamen skryf nie,”sê Stefan.

“Maar ek wou wys ek kan presteer tenspyte van alles.”

Hy sê wat gehelp het was die geweldigeondersteuning wat hy gekry het van vrien-de, ouers, onderwysers en ook mense wathy nie eers geken het nie.

“Ek het ’n boodskap gekry dat daar ’nbidgroep vir my in Australië is,” sê hy.

Die skool het altyd sy werk na hom toegestuur en toe hy weer op die been was,het die onderwysers hom na ure gehelp omop datum te kom. Intussen het hy omtrentelke week na die geheuekliniek in Panora-

ma gegaan, want na so ’n aanval is sy geheueheeltemal aangetas. “Hulle leer my daar omte onthou, want ek vergeet byvoorbeeld mensese name,” sê Stefan.

“Toe Stefan sy uitslae kry, het ons buite diesaal vir hom staan en wag. Hy het net gesê ‘ek

New street lights are being erectedalong the outskirts of Bothasig inPlattekloof Road to improve safety.A total of 70 lights are installed at

a cost close to R800 000 on the north-ern side of Plattekloof Road border-ing Bothasig.“There is a widely held belief that

the improvement of street lightingwill reduce both crime and fear ofcrime. From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist.With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels.He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all started way back in 1978, where

Charlaine, then amere five years old, start-ed swinging clubs at the Durbanville GolfClub.“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along to Durbanville Golf Club whenev-er he would play.“I used to take him on at chipping and

putting contests all the time.“I have such incredible memories of

growing up playing golf at Durbanville andplayingwith the ladies’ section there. I wonthe Ladies Club Championship twice.

WP“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as a

junior and I also captained the FairmontHigh School golf team,” Charlaine reflectedon the good old days. She alsowon the Pren-tice Cup for u-21 females in WP.After her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship

to Longwood College in Virginia and thatis where my “career” began.“I had a great college playing career – I

won the National Championship for Divi-sion II schools 3 times while at college andin my senior year 1995 I won three majorawards – Virginia Women Athlete of theYear, Honda Award for Division II Athleteof the year and Today’s Top Eight Award(highest honour that the NCAA awards tocollege athletes),” said Charlaine.

Entries have opened for the historic triath-lon, the TriRockRobben Island, whichwillbe taking place on the 2 November.The event strives to honour the heritage

of Robben Island by providing an authen-tic cultural experience. Athletes and spec-tators will be given the opportunity tospend the night on the island in Robben Is-land Prison, where they will receive a tourby a prison warden and talk by an ex-pris-oner about some of the freedom fightersthat it housed. In addition to this athleteswill also be able to witness the island inall its scenic beauty through the swim, runand cycle stages of the event itself.The triathlon will consist of a morning

sprint distance of a 400 m swim, 14 km cy-cle and 4 km run with the afternoon raceconsisting of an 800 m swim, 27 km cycleand 8 km run. There will also be an addi-tional running race in the afternoon dedi-cated to 27 years Nelson Mandela spent onthe island.
