Most of this time, says Zipho Langa (22) from Philippi, was spent on a chair in the waiting area while he had severe stomach cramps and bled after an injury at work. “I was scared that I might bleed right through my jeans. I kept thinking about the consequences (of the injury),” he says. Langa says he saw many people coming in with stab and gunshot wounds, who had to sit on chairs too while waiting to be tend- ed to. After two nights on a chair in the waiting area, he was finally taken for scans and was allowed to sleep in a bed between 01:00 and 06:00 before he had to hand it over to another patient. On Thursday he saw a urologist, was taken to theatre, fitted with a catheter and discharged. Langa says he is better now, despite go- ing home with an infection. According to Laticia Pienaar, spokesper- son of Tygerberg hospital, the trauma unit saw close to 100 cases on the particular evening. “These patients ranged from minor inju- ries to critically ill patients. According to the SATS (the triage system) all patients presented to the trauma unit will be as- sessed and those who are triaged red and orange will have preference over those tri- aged yellow and green. Langa was triaged as yellow as his condition was not life threatening,” she says. Pienaar says unfortunately resources have to be directed to those who require lifesaving intervention. This makes it im- possible for everyone in this unit to have a bed. “Langa arrived at the trauma section at approximately 20:40. He was triaged by our nursing personnel at 20:45 and seen by a trauma doctor at 21:15. “Because of the type of injury, he re- quired specialised imaging testing before he could be referred to the specialist doc- tor. Due to a large influx of patients requir- ing emergency care, it was impossible to do all the special investigative tests in quick succession,” she says. Pienaar says all the investigations are now in place for further management. Langa says since being discharged, he has seen his local doctor who prescribed antibiotics for the infection. He says he has a follow-up appointment with the Tyger- berg urologist in January. Kinders speel in die helder water van Parow-Noord se swembad. man admitted to the Tygerberg hos-

pital trauma unit with bleeding pri-

more than 60 hours before he was seen by

    a specialist.

Most of this time, says Zipho Langa (22)

cramps and bled after an injury at work.

I was scared that I might bleed right

elderwater vloei al virmaande by die

suidelike ingang van die Jan Burger-

    sportkompleks in Parow-Noord oor

Di water is volgens Roger Johnson, fasi-

Hulle

blameer die probleem op n pypverstopping.

    @linnertmb

Theres no way to determine how a car in-

volved in an accident last Thursday on

Carl Cronje Road landed his car up on a

    high embankment facing opposite traffic.

So says Theo Layne, the Citys Fire and

Rescue Services spokesman about the ac-

cident which happened at 15:39 just after

    the Momentum Golf Village.

    Wedonot investigatemotor vehicle ac-

cidents; we only assist the injured. There

is nothing I get from any of the reports or

the incident occurrence book on how the

    accident happened, he said.

The car had ended up on a retaining

wall about two metres from the ground.

Layne confirmed a single man was in-

volved in the accident and he had sus-

    tained only minor injuries.

    An eyewitness who alerted TygerBur-

ger only minutes after the accident,

Charles Tertians, thought he had seen a

    woman trapped underneath the white

    BMW.

    Layne, however, denied this.

There is absolutely no indication that

there was a person trapped underneath

the vehicle. The incident report would

have mentioned it if that were the case.

He said themanwas taken to Tygerberg

    Hospital.

But how did the car end up there?

The never say die attitude of an off-duty po-

lice officer led to the arrest of three house-

    breaking suspects.

On Wednesday 2 December at about 13:30

Warrant Officer Jaques Pieters was at home

when he received a call from a member of the

community about three suspects in the area.

Pieters got into his private vehicle and

    rushed toRhodes Streetwherehe followed the

suspects until they disappeared into a yard.

    He immediately called for backup.

Sergeant Andr Brandt and Constable An-

thea Millward responded to Pieterss call.

    The suspects were caught red-handed.

    Seun gered uit kookkar

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    n

    Agtjarige seuntjie is Saterdag van

n gewisse dood gered toe inkopie-

Hy was vasgekeer.

Volgens Uys het die sentrum se seker-

    heidshoof seweminute later aangehardloop

gekom.

Ek kon skaars asemhaal. Ek kan my nie

    nie.

    Volgens Laretha Blom, bemarkingsbe-

stuurder van die sentrum, het sekerheids-

    personeel bydie sentrumvolmagom nkind

    kinderverwaarlosing egter teen ouers inge-

bring word, s kapt. Fienie Nimb, woord-

    voerder van die Bellville-polisie. Volgens

besoek.

standighede ooit n kind alleen in n motor-

    voertuig te laat nie.

Op n warm dag kan n kind sterf. Al is

die motor in die skadu parkeer, verhit die

binnekant van n motor astronomies vin-

nig. As die temperatuur byvoorbeeld 33 C

FOTO: VERSKAF

he anxiety of a local bird lover was al-

    most palpable when he complained

about the drastic drop in bird numbers

and blamed it on gangs of attacking and

    raiding crows in his garden.

    Francois Barnard fromBoston inBellville

told TygerBurger he was at his wits end be-

cause he couldnt enjoy sweet pigeon song

anymore because of local marauding crow

    gangs.

The crows regularly fly together like

gangs, in swarms of five or more, and then

attack pigeons and birds nests, poaching

    whatever can be scavenged.

Eggs are eaten, pigeon chicks and little

birds are summarily eaten, and even the

chameleons in our backyard are eaten, he

    said.

We cannot even hear the pigeons singing

anymore and the birdlife has decreased sig-

nificantlywhile the crows remain cocky and

go right ahead with their poaching.

    Notorious nest predators

The culprits are pied crows, the black-and-

white species of crow from the corvid family

(including magpies and ravens), of which

    the numbers have grown substantially

    across the province.

These were the findings of a study by the

Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Orni-

thology at the University of Cape Town.

The corvid family are widely known to

mob, harass, and compete with raptors for

nesting sites, and are notorious nest preda-

tors, according to the study published in

the international journal Diversity and Dis-

    tributions.

Dr Arjun Amar from the institute told

TygerBurger their study explored two is-

sues: One, whether pied crow numbers had

increased over the last 10 years, and two, if

this was influencing local bird populations.

A lot of gardeners and bird watchers

have expressed concerns over an increase in

the numbers of pied crows across the prov-

    ince, Amar said.

He saidmany nature lovers have been dis-

tressed to witness a crow or magpie raiding

the nests of their beloved garden songbirds,

stealing their eggs or eating their chicks.

Although this predation is entirely natu-

ral, these observations can be upsetting to

witness and often leave people wondering if

    thesepredatorsmightbe reducingbirdnum-

bers. However, our global review suggests

that we should be cautious before jumping

to conclusions over the impacts these spe-

cies may have. Just because a predator eats

    something occasionally does not always

mean that they have an impact.

    He explained their methods.

We used SA Bird Atlas project informa-

tion to explore whether the population num-

bers have indeed changed, or whether it was

in peoples minds, then matched it to geo-

    graphic and climate data.

It appears to be true an increase of

about 13% over the last 10 years across the

    province was noted, he said.

There are a number of variables causing

this, Amar said, with the biggest indicators

being warmer climes and the crows benefit-

    ing frommodern infrastructure in particu-

lar electricity pylons, which make useful

    nesting sites, he said.

    Very little impact

On the issue of how the crow population

growth was affecting local birdlife, Amar

said they had explored all studies relating

to crow population growth and the impact

    on other species available.

Weve very rarely seen a decrease in the

number of prey species. But we do find the

crows very often raid nests and numbers of

    young produced are lower.

I cant comment on the chameleon issue

this is not well known. They can possibly

have an impact on chameleon numbers, but

there are no studies to base this on, he said.

Amar reiterated there were no scientific

studies that have yet quantified if the in-

creases in pied crows were likely to lead to

    any biodiversity impacts.

We cant be sure what impact these in-

creases are likely to have on any other biodi-

versity, until we conduct further research.

Although our recent global review suggest-

ed that in most cases corvids actually have

very little impact on their potential prey

    populations.

He said if therewere an impact on birdlife,

it most often affected the breeding success

of the prey species rather than their subse-

    quent numbers.

Chrissie Madden, the lead author on a pa-

per co-researched byAmar and published in

    ornithology journal Ibis, said: Over-

all ... our study points to the fact that we are

often too quick to jump to the conclusion

that crows and magpies may be the cause of

    bird population declines.

As Cape Town tightens up on

water restrictions, it is time to

    look at desalination as a

    long-term measure to improve

    our water supply.

    One opportunity going

    begging is the Koeberg power

    station. Nuclear reactors

    actually produce a lot more

    waste heat than electricity and

the scandal is that we dont

use the free heat to desali-

nate sea water and make an

    important contribution to this

    water scarce country.

It is standard practice to run

    desalination plants run in

    tandem with power stations in

    the Middle East to produce

most of the water for the

    desert countries and even to

    water golf courses. Why dont

    we do it here?

    The answer is probably that

    Eskom and the City Council

    never spoke to each other

    when Koeberg was planned.

    The other desalination option

    is reverse osmosis, another

    widely used technology. If the

    global warming prophets of

doom are even half right we

will need both of these technol-

ogies in the future, so the

sooner we start and get to

    grips with the technology, the

more we will learn and the

    better decisions we will make

when it is time to upscale the

    desalination plants.

    JANINE MYBURGH,

    Cape Chamber of Commerce and

    Industry

    Why dont we

    desalinate?

Die feesseisoen is n tyd van

die jaar wat ons as verkeersbe-

amptes ons hande vol het met

    die groot hoeveelheid voertuie

op ons paaie. Dit is ook n tyd

van die jaar waar daar n

    toename in die gebruik van

openbare vervoer is. Dit is dus

    belangrik dat doeltreffende

    verkeerswetstoepassing en

    Belangrik dat

    vervoer veilig is

    polisiring toegepas word om te

    verseker dat voertuie vir

    openbare vervoer padwaardig

    is, en dat bestuurders die

    geskiktheidsvereistes wat deur

    die wet bepaal word, nakom.

    Dis uiters belangrik dat alle

    openbare padgebruikers veilig

vervoer word. Ek wil amper s

dat dit di tyd van die jaar is

    wanneer mense as gevolg van

    haas en opgewondenheid

    vergeet hoe om te bestuur.

    n Sterk wetstoepassingteen-

    woordigheid word benodig om

    te verseker dat padgebruikers

die wet nakom. Dit is inderdaad

    waar dat verkeerswetstoepas-

    sing, net soos enige ander

    beroep, verskeie uitdagings het.

    Jy moet soms die slegte

    uitdagings oorheers met positie-

    we resultate. Nietemin was

    verkeerswetstoepassing nooit

    nt n werksgeleentheid of

    loopbaankeuse nie; dit was van

die begin af n passie. Hoewel

    ons baie weerstand van lede

van die publiek kry, is dit

steeds ons plig om die publiek

se belange tot die beste van ons

    vermo beskerm, en die belang-

rikste is om ons paaie teen

    elemente van gevaar te beveilig

    en sodoende padsterftes tot die

    minimum te beperk.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Keep furry

    friends cool

    and hydrated

While many Capetonians are revelling in

the warmer weather, its important to

spare a thought for our furry friends this

    time of year.

Just like humans have to take care,

animals are exposed to a myriad of

health concerns in the summer months.

Heatstroke, for example, can be fatal to

some dogs, and dogs with short snouts or

long hair are among the more prone

breeds. The obvious tip when it comes to

heat is to not leave animals in the car,

yet still, many do. According to the

SPCA, temperatures inside a car can

reach up to 47 degrees in an hour, even

when its just 22 degrees outside.

Many people are unaware of the effect

of hot surfaces on little paws. Surfaces

like tar, metal and even sand absorb heat

and can stay warm for hours after the

sun has gone down, which could poten-

tially burn the pads on the underside of a

    pets paws.

A good test is to hold the back of your

hand against the surface for about 10

seconds. If its too hot for you, it will be

    too hot for an animal.

    Pets, particularly lighter ones, are

susceptible to sunburn, just like humans.

While making sure they have a cool

shady place to escape the sun remains

the best option, many vets stock pet

    sunscreens.

And because all good boys deserve a

treat, why not fill a two litre ice cream

tub with water and treats, freeze it, and

watch your pet enjoy hours of fun and

cooling while they lick through the ice.

25 May 2016 - Cape Town International Convention Centre

    #wcfundingfair

    S

    aturday 5 December was Internation-

    al Volunteers Day, celebrated global-

ly to honour those who offer their

help freely to make a difference.

With this in mind the Metro Evangelical

    Services (MES) organisation, which does

    some amazingworkwith the less fortunate

of Bellville and surrounds, wished to thank

    their own volunteers and simultaneously

call on residents to celebrate by giving

    back.

Arthur Mukhari from MES says volun-

teering is a mutually symbiotic activity

as much as volunteering helps them out,

its as good for the volunteers.

Why do people volunteer? They use ex-

tra time in a meaningful manner, increase

experience and skills, are passionate about

the cause and believe in sharing of resour-

    ces.

He adds for many people it is a privilege

to be able to pay it forward, or give back,

    hoping to bless others.

    Its a calling

For many it is a calling that not only al-

lows them to share, but also helps increase

their confidence because of doing good. It

feels like one is helping tomake the burden

of others lighter, with skill sets to share,

    he said.

The volunteers are also broadening their

networks and fulfill a role as part of a team.

    Clients plight becomes real

    To charitable organisations such as

MES, the help of volunteers is invaluable

    on many levels, Arthur says.

We get to increase the available expert-

ise, standard of service delivery, quality

    and value to our clients.

It also helps them build capacity and

lighten the burden on otherwise stretched

    resources, while increasing exposure to

theworkMES does and the broadening the

networks they are able to build.

The clients plight the plight of street

people becomes real as volunteers con-

nect with them. Clients are also able to

    build relationshipswith awider communi-

    ty, he says.

They become new role models for the

clients and help increase positive energy.

The volunteer activities also add some

    glitter to current activities.

So, if resolutions for 2016 include giving

back, this might be the ideal opportunity.

V For more information on how to get involved in

MESs volunteer activities, contact Arthur at ar

    he annual Slow Market Christmas

    Week returns to the Willowbridge

Lifestyle Centre this year from 12 to

19 December this time adding an element

    of copper to the celebration!

The use of copper for kitchen accessories

such as pots, pans and jelly moulds reflects

the original Cape style kitchen dating back

    to the 1600s.

What better way to celebrate Christmas

than with our very own Cape heritage and

et meer as 10 000 YouTube-

    kyke vir haar tweede enkel-

    snit se musiekvideo, beloof

    die Durbanville-sanger Suzanne se

nuwe album om propvol treffers te

    wees.

    Suzanne, wat gehore vanaf die

ouderdom van 10 al betower, het

    onlangs haar sesde album,Vuurbe-

    stand, bekendgestel.

Die album is deur Tommy Tuc-

    ker Studios opgeneem, terwyl Die

    Heuwels Fantasties se Fred den

    Hartog die vervaardiging behartig

het. Suzanne s hy verdien alle eer

vir die klank van die produksie.

Hy het vanaf die beginfase n vi-

sie gehadwat baie goed ingepas het

by my persoonlike smaak en styl.

    Vuurbestand bevat baie elemen-

    klank.Hoewel Fred sy eie stempel

op die album afgedruk het, het hy

ook gesorg dat die styl steeds baie

    goed by elke liedjie pas.

    Ekhoopomindie toekomsweer

saam met hom te kan werk.

Nog n persoon saammet wie Su-

    zanne op Vuurbestand gewerk het,

is haar man, Jacobus Uys. Di

    endanhet onsvir ure saammusiek

gemaak, vertel sy. Hulle het dus

van die begin van hul verhouding

al n kreatiewe band en Suzanne s

hulle vul mekaar baie goed aan.

    Ek sal nie hierdie ondervinding

alleen of saammet enige ander per-

soon as Jacobus wil deel nie.

    Suzanne het die tweede musiek-

video vir die album se liedjie, Be-

    lofte, in November op YouTube

    vrygestel en inminder as nmaand

is daar al meer as 10 000 keer na ge-

kyk. Die eerste video vir Vuurbe-

stand is al meer as 14 000 keer na

gekyk en Suzanne beplan om haar

derde video in die volgende paar

maande te skiet. Sy beplan ook om

die album oor die land heen te

    neem met nasionale optredes en

    sal vroegvolgende jaar tot inNami-

    bi te sien wees.

    Intussen sal aanhangers Suzan-

    Roulette verskyn. Vroeg volgende

jaar is daar ook n kuier by Juk-

ebox en Jam in die vooruitsig.

V Vuurbestand is op iTunes of by musiek

winkels te koop. Vir meer oor Suzanne en

    haar musiek, besoek www.suzanne.co.za

    of twitter.com/suzanneamptelik of loer

    bietjie in by haar Facebookblad.
