Canada and Scotland sharing the driver’s seat after three

games? Figures.But what about the

defending Olympic silver-medal winners, the defend-ing world silver-medal winners, the nation that has been out of the Ford Worlds playoffs only once in the last decade?

“We are in trouble, we’re leaking oil, we’re desperate now,” said Norwegian skip Thomas Ulsrud after drop-ping a pair of matches — to the Czech Republic (7-5) and Germany (9-8) — on Sunday in the Ford Worlds curling championship at the Brandt Centre.

“The funny thing is, one or two ends in each game

really seem to make trouble for us,” said Ulsrud, who lost in an extra-end morn-ing tussle but was down 8-3 after six ends in the evening before staging a futile come-back that fell short to Andy Kapp’s last-rock takeout shot.

“We’re not playing like we normally do. For some funny reason we need to start this engine up.”

Ulsrud (1-2) has to gure out a way to get back in the chase today against Swede’s Niklas Edin and France’s Thomas Dufour, both with 2-and-1 records.

To compound matters, the Norwegians were hardly impressive in winning a come-from-behind squeaker on Saturday against lowly Korea.

This may be shades of the old days for Norway when Pal Trulsen was directing

traf c and telling reporters every year at the Worlds that his team was a notoriously slow starter. More often than not, Trulsen’s teams recov-ered from those slow starts in miraculous fashion.

“I’m going to give him a call,” quipped Ulsrud. “Wake him up in the middle of the night. We need help.”

Scotland’s Tom Brewster enjoyed the biggest advance-ment on Sunday, winning twice, albeit while exhibiting less than great style attempt-ing to play with a lead.

The Scots hammered winless Korea for ve in the fourth end of their afternoon tilt, led 7-1 and required an additional ve ends to kill off the match. On the late

shift, Brewster’s crew was up 6-2 at the half and the skipper still had to execute an angle-raise takeout with his last of the 10th end to ensure a 10-6 win over Switzerland’s Christof Schwaller.

“We made it dif cult for ourselves but I think the guys played a great last end,” said the Scottish skip whose young teammates are playing at this level for the rst time.

“We haven’t played well with the lead but I think that’s partly to do with the arena ice and partly to do with the fact we’re not mak-ing the runbacks and double peels like we normally do. I think we’re just adjusting to

the ice and by the end of the week we’ll be good.

“We feel good about the 3-0 record and hopefully we’ll be tied next Sunday with Canada and have the hammer coming home.”

Jeff Stoughton and the home favourites from Win-nipeg were called upon

only once on Sunday and responded with a 7-4 win over Kapp’s Germans.

The Fussen skip unleashed a glittering array of shots in an effort to keep his team in the game but eventually wilted when Canada scored its second deuce in the seventh end to grab control of the issue.

“He (Kapp) was a one-man wrecking crew,” said Canadian vice-skip Jon Mead. “He made one shot in the fourth end that I can’t make . . . no way. We had to be the better team or the way he was curling it would have been a blowout.”

Skip Stoughton agreed.“There was a little more

rhythm in this game for us,” he said.

PROUD OFFICIAL VEHICLE SUPPLIERGreat debates rage

over ‘the greatest’

RESBY COUTTSFor the Eye Opener

Who’s the “Great-est of All Time”? Broadcast legend

Bob Picken of Winnipeg suggested recently that Jeff Stoughton is probably the best Manitoba curler of all time.

Stoughton had just marked up his ninth Manitoba men’s and third Brier champion-ship to go with four earlier Manitoba mixed plus two Canadian mixed titles.

The combined accom-plishments and longevity make it tough to debate. Those mixed titles began in the 1980’s and Stoughton’s rst trip to the Brier came in 1991. That’s 20-plus years of excellence.

Maybe Kerry Burtnyk, who jumped into men’s

competition with a Mani-toba title and Brier win in 1981. He went to his last Brier in 2008. That’s almost 30 years of excellence but not quite the record of ac-complishment.

Maybe career leads Bryan

Wood ( ve Manitoba, three Canada, two world titles) or Steve Gould (six Manitoba, three Canada, one world title) or Stoughton’s former second Garry VanDenBer-ghe ( ve Manitoba, one Canada, one world title). However, those are fewer titles over fewer years.

Maybe the legends of an earlier era. In Manitoba, that means Ken Watson, Gordon Hudson or Howard Wood Sr. Picken acknowledged their excellence and the challenges of playing in their time but was not ready to put them ahead of Stoughton.

There’ll be no fourth crown for LindholmJeff Stoughton currently

is labouring at the Brandt Centre, trying to move

deeper into elite curling company as a two-time world-champion skip.

Stoughton is 46 years old.His primary adversaries in

the battle for Canadian curl-ing supremacy these days are Glenn Howard, at 48, and Kevin Martin, going on 45. Each has won a single world men’s title as a skipper.

Everyone knows the only four-time world-champion skip extent just happens to be Regina’s own Ernie Richard-son. Long since retired.

And everyone knows, too, that Randy Ferbey and Ron Northcott are North America’s only three-time world-champion skips. One’s past 50. The other is long-in-the-tooth . . . twice over.

But there’s another guy on

the Brandt premises this week who already has skipped three world winners and he’s a mere 40 years old. Next thing to swaddling clothes com-pared to these other crocks.

Under normal circum-stances, Peja Lindholm would be by far your best bet to match Big Ernie’s skipping record, maybe even surpass it.

But, circumstances aren’t

normal for Peja, the 1997, 2000 and 2004 world king. He’s from a sparsely popu-lated curling country relative to Canada, and he’s already made a firm commitment to retiring from the hacks beyond a Swedish national coaching role.

“My team had been play-ing together for such a long time,” Lindholm was saying Sunday at the Brandt, by way of promising never to return to threaten another Canadian skip in a world curling derby.

“Like 25 years? Same four guys. And it takes so much effort to form a new team, bring it to this level and be able to compete. There aren’t as many curlers in Sweden as there are in Canada, eh?”

When the quarter-century triple-champ batting order that included Tomas Nordin,

Magnus Swartling and Peter Narup mutually joined their skip in voluntary retirement following the Torino Olym-pics, Lindholm experimented briefly.

He took a group of transplanted Scot James Dryburgh, Viktor Kjall and Anders Eriksson to the 2007 Worlds at Edmonton. But there was no immedi-ate indication the unit was going to jell any time soon.

“So I decided, no, I didn’t want to continue,” Lindholm said.

Across Canada the discus-sion is the same. In Ontario – Werenich, Russ or Glenn Howard? In Saskatchewan does anyone rival Ernie Richardson? In Alberta, Kevin Martin – with a nod to Ferbey or Northcott or Gervais from an earlier time.

Greatest Canadian ever? Odds are the answer from everyone will be Kevin Martin, tough as it for a Manitoban to say. He won his rst Brier in 1991 and his impressive record includes that Olympic gold medal.

Every country has its greatest. We may be seeing three of them this week. In Denmark, is Tommy Stjerne their greatest ever? In Swe-den, is it Peja Lindholm, coaching here this week?

In Germany, does any-one’s record match Andy Kapp with a record 66 world wins? Or is Keith Wendorf, who lost the Regina nal in ‘83, Germany’s best ever?

In Norway, Thomas Ulsrud replaced Pal Trulsen but what about Eigel Rams-fjell? Second for Soerum in Winnipeg in ’78 and Berne when they won in ’79, he went on to win 63 games as a skip and his 15 appear-ances are the most in world curling history.

The U.S. curler on my list must be Bud Somerville, the rst non-Canadian to win a world champion-ship. Between 1965 and Olympic bronze in the 1992 demonstration year, he won another world championship in ‘74 and still owns the U.S. record with 32 world championship wins.

Not surprisingly, Scotland is like Canada with regional favourites and great play-ers across the decades. I wouldn`t presume to choose between Chuck Hay who

won Scotland`s rst world title; David Smith who won it in Winnipeg in 1991; 1999 world champion Hammy McMillan; two-time cham-pions David Murdoch, War-wick Smith and Euan Byers; or three-time champion Ewan McDonald.

Perhaps Switzerland is similar in choosing the best across regions and generations. Otto Danielli (1975) and Jurg Tanner (1981) showed the way with early champion-ships. Markus Eggler has the most Swiss world appear-ances and bronze medals from Salt Lake City and Vancouver. Patrick Hurli-mann has 31 world wins and a gold medal from Nagano. Ralph Stockli has 30 world wins

and a bronze medal from Vancouver.

In recent years, the internationals have matched rocks pretty well with the Canadians.

However, there is always the argument about

comparing teams from different eras.

Based on only one expe-

rience,

I believe

you can compare across time. In his 80s, playing in a 65th consecutive

Manitoba Curling Associa-tion bonspiel, I played the Manitoba legend Howard (Pappy) Wood. I was in my 20s and honoured to be on the ice with this old gentle-man.

His physical skills had long since failed him but the mind of a great curler was still there.

He saw the game differ-ently from anyone I had

ever played. He saw angles and opportunities that the current greats see routinely.

No matter what era they dominated the game, the greats of the game were just that – great curlers.

They’d still be at the front of the pack today in Regina.

“I knew what it takes to do it and I would say about three years to fill up a new, really good team, and I decided that’s too much time for me.”

A fourth world title? Yah, it would be nice. King of the curling hill? Great. But not the end-all for Peja Lindholm, who played in eight Worlds, three World Juniors and three Olympic Games.

“I’m comfortable with the decision we made,” he said. “If I don’t believe in my team and I think we don’t really have what it takes, then it would require too much time and I would not be serious if I was to continue. I have to be 100 per cent at whatever I’m doing. There’s no way, under the circumstances.”

There were odd moments of uncertainty, of course.

“Actually, my wife asked me, should we move to Can-ada?” he recalled. “She said, ‘You could play on the tour with three other guys, and that would be good for our kids to learn English.’ ”

Nice thought. But it quickly took on the proportions of an impossible dream.

“I didn’t give it much seri-ous consideration,” he said. “And then I got this chance to be the national coach and I jumped at that.

“I know I still have the competitive fire. I don’t play curling any more. But I do a lot of long distance running. I’m working and training even harder than when I was a curler. So I’m fully commit-ted to what I’m doing. And the good thing is, that’s not a problem for me. Staying in condition is very important for me.”

Lindholm lives in Oster-sund, situated on the same latitude as Yellowknife. The winters are . . . well . . . frigid, to say the least.

“I was out running in minus-31 Celsius a few times every week and people thought I was insane,” he said. “I have this mask for my mouth and nose. My eyes were so wet there were icicles

and I couldn’t see. It was pretty funny.”

The challenges presented in his current job are both taxing and exciting.

“As an active skip, you must have a long-term team plan, you must believe in what you are doing and in your teammates,” he said. “As a national coach, you must formulate a master plan. It’s not just for one team. It’s how can I develop Swedish curling, how can I win gold medals for Sweden, how I can put up the resources to achieve this and how I can get the teams committed.

“That is so much fun. It’s a much bigger challenge for

me than curling. Then I have a chance to prove my leader-ship that I attained as a skip. Skipping really helped me in that regard.

“Sure, it’s exciting. It includes the men’s and women’s teams. I can’t expect to be the best in every detail so I must find the details and then I must find the experts to cover them off and communi-cate with them.

“Curling in Sweden is much more athletic, much more physical now, than in the past. In Canada, you have so many curlers and you have some good feeling. We don’t have the numbers to come up with that in Sweden. So we try to

find other ways to get better. One way is to be more ath-letic. We think we have a big advantage there in Sweden.”

Sounds like the old saw about the 60-year-old Swede who can out-run the 30-year-old Canadian?

“It might be so,” said Lindholm.

“But bringing our teams to Canada is an important con-sideration. I have to come up with the funding to facilitate that with our teams.

“For example, our spare player here, Oskar (Eriks-son)? He won the world juniors a few weeks ago and also the nationals among the men’s. So his team is in the national squad and he asked me, ‘How can I take the next step?’ Because I know he needs to go to Canada to play, and to have a lot of time in Canada to get the toughness.

“I’m trying to find the resources for that. We were afforded the same thing as a team. It helped us a lot.”

Meantime, the old team

is contributing in different ways.

“I talked (second) Magnus (Swartling) into coming back as a coach and at least giving it a try with Anette (Norberg),” said Lindholm, “He did a great job! I hope we can bring him back next season. Right now his wife is awaiting the arrival of a third child.

“Tomas (third Nordin) was involved with the wheelchair team at the Para-lympics in Vancouver.”

But putting that winning foursome together again never will transpire.

Unless . . . “I told them back then,”

said Lindholm. “I have a dream, guys. That is to win the world seniors. Then we’ll have won the seniors, the men’s and the juniors. Hope-fully, that can be a dream comes true in a few years!”

For the guy they call Peja, it means more than that increasingly elusive fourth world title.

NORWAY“But, yeah, we had to be

patient until we were able to get that second deuce.

“You’ve just got to keep plugging along. Their skip was playing so well. We just had to hang in there and keep up with them.

“It was good to get a good game under our belt. Our rst two games were a little shaky. We still weren’t super sharp today but we made all the clutch draws that we needed to make and I think the guys just felt better out there.”

Added Mead: “We’re 3-and-0 and there’s still room for improvement. That’s a good sign.”

Kapp was heaving a sigh of relief at getting his rst win later in the piece.

“We needed that one,” he admitted. “It was a little frightening for the coach. But in the last end we knew we had hammer again and at the end of the week nobody will be asking how we won it.

“Every year here it is hurting more and more. It’s

tougher competition all the time but it is a lot of fun, with great ice and great crowds. That’s why you practise all year to play in it, put a show on and just enjoy it.”

Jiri Snitil’s Czechs defeated China 8-5 on the late draw for their second win of the day and China’s rst defeat. That left the Czechs at 2-1 with China, France and Sweden.

“Our best-ever record here is three wins so we’re more than halfway to a personal record,” beamed Snitil.

The Swedes knocked off France 7-6 and Pete Fenson’s U.S. team 11-2.

“We’re competing for the playoffs and so are they,” said Swedish skip Edin following the massacre of the Yanks. “It’s important to win those games, even more so than against teams like Stoughton who will be there and teams

who won’t be there. We are looking at the playoffs all the way. That’s our goal. We need to focus of making the play-offs and peaking there.”

Early aggression and de-fensive hitting are Sweden’s long suits and they made them work to perfection against the U.S. squad (1-2) that yielded four multiple counts.

“We struggled with the ice, dug ourselves a big hole and couldn’t get out of it quick enough,” said U.S. vice-skip Shawn Rojeski.

“These Swedish guys are fantastic hitters. You don’t want to get that far behind with them. A three or four-point lead to them, it’s tough to get out of it.”

Elsewhere on the after-noon log, Yansong Ji of China shaded Danish veteran Tommy Stjerne (0-3) by a 7-6 count.

In one other morning tussle, the Swiss crew (1-2) helmed by Schwaller downed the United States 6-4.
