He said employers have of- fered 7%. “Workers cannot buy anything with the R17 per hour they are currently earning. We also want employers to contribute 70% towards medical aid. We demand that pregnant women must not work night shifts and must get six months maternity leave and pay. We also want a 20% night-shift al- lowance.” Jakkie Olivier, chief executive officer of the RMI, told a sister paper of the Gazette that the demands are unrealistic and unreasonable. “This is not a protest any more. This is now a full-blown national strike. The industry cannot afford these demands and they will not be sustainable for the future.” He added that if these demands are accepted, they would lead to ma- jor job losses and the closure of sev- eral businesses. The FRA could not comment due to their management being in wage negotiations yesterday. Wind farms will have a negative impactWind farms will have a negative impactWith reference to recent articles on windfarms in the Gazette, and agreeing whole-heartedly with Mark Townsend and JayneBeaumont’s comments in the articles, I amvery concerned that nobody to my knowl-edge has mentioned or emphasised the en-vironmental impact of these enormousmonstrosities. They are constructed ofmany environmentally unfriendly materi-als. A photograph published in your papershowing the size of the excavation of thewind farm currently in construction nearCaledon mentioned that there are 45 tonsof steel in the foundation alone. What is thecarbon footprint of steel production, bear-ing in mind Langhoogte is scheduled tohave 44 turbines? The foundation hole is230 cubic metres. What impact does themanufacturing of that amount of concretehave on the environment?A hole big enough to accept all of the

above construction material has to first bedug. What happens to 230 cubic metres ofsoil from this hole? Will it be removed fromsite and if so, where will it go? If not, whatwillhappentoit, rememberingthat thesub-soil in this area ismostly clay?Whatmeas-ureswillbe implementedtoprevent thesoilfrombeingwasheddownbyrainand fillingup thedrainage linesandwetlandswith theconsequent impact on water birds, frogs, bats and organisms that live in the de-stroyedhabitat?Manyof theaboveareben-eficial to farmers in that theyare biologicalpestcontrolagents.Thesoilwillalsobesub-ject towind erosion andalso spread to adja-cent areas by the wind, affecting crops andgrazing. Even if removed from site (whichis very unlikely), all of the abovewill applyto wherever it is dumped.Everybodypassingthecurrentsiteshave

seenand inmost casesbeensurprised ifnotshocked by the size of the access road. Didthe farmer not stop to think of the roadneeded to transport the enormous compo-nents and the size of a crane required toerect a tower that is 110 mhighwith bladesthat are 60 mlong? Imagine theLanghoogtearea with 44 such roads. What will the im-pactbeonthe farmingoperation?Whatwillthe aesthetic impact on the beautiful Over-bergbewith theseroadsandturbinesdomi-nating the God-given landscape? In addi-tion to the roads, they need to dig trenchesfor the underground cables that will linkthe turbine to the substation on site, andthen there will be overhead power lines tothe Houw Hoek Eskom substation. Thetrenches are an additional erosion hazardandaneyesore.Howmanybluecranes,rap-tors,owls,batsandotherbirdswillbekilledby the rotating blades of the turbines?I asked the Theewaterskloof municipali-

ty who was going to monitor the impact re-garding avian fauna, andanofficial repliedthat it may be CapeNature. At a recentmeeting in Bot River I asked the local Cap-eNature representative the same questionand he replied that he was not sure, butthought the operators of the wind farm

were responsible for the monitoring. Canwe trust them to do so and if so, will theyreport any negative results? Even at rela-tively slow speeds of rotation, because ofthe length of the blades their tips will betravelling just sub-sonic. Remember thatthe blue crane is our national bird and isendemic to South Africa – and the greaterbulk of the population is in the Overberg. Can we afford to risk their extinction? Arecent article mentioned the negative ef-fectsof soundand flicker fromthe turbines.I don’t think people realise that becausewind is so variable the carbon generatingEskom power stations still have to be keptrunning, even if only on standby, as thereis no way of storing the energy producedby thewind turbines. Sowhere is the greengainfromtheseenvironmentallydetrimen-tal monsters?Ihaveaskedthequestion, butnobodycan

giveme an answer towhat impact these in-dustrial turbines will have on the farmer’sagricultural rates. They will be turning alovely agricultural landscape into an in-dustrial one. Do a few farmers have theright to spoil this landscape that belongstousall collectively for theirpersonalgain? In terms of our excellent national constitu-tion there must be public participation inanydevelopmentthataffects thepublic, butapart fromsmallmeetings, thishasnot tak-en place and questions asked by the few at-tendees at thosemeetingshavenot beenad-equately answered. Emphasis wasmade ina recent article that “only” two objectionshad been received. This is totally untrueasmany intentions to object havebeen sentin and those that have objected representvarious constituencies comprising manypeople. It is suspected that the people whohave said that they are pro the wind farmsdo not fully understand the implications orhavebeenmisledabout their supposedben-efits that will derive from them. The ques-tion can also be asked: at which public fo-rumwere these signatures obtained andbywhomwere they verified? There have beenmanyqueriesabout thequalityandaccura-cy of various aspects of the environmentalstudy but these have also remained unan-swered.If these wind farms are so effective, why

havemanycountries inEuropebannedfur-ther investment in them andwhy are thereso many worldwide that are no longer inoperation but are still killing birds?Ihaveheard thatanumberof the farmers

who had signed up are very unhappy abouta number of issues surrounding the windfarms and that communication betweenthemandSagit, whichusedtobequitecosy, has deteriorated to: “ Talk to my lawyer”.I feel it is critical that thewider communityshould be aware of our concern for the im-pact of these wind farms on our greater en-vironment and the negative effect on tour-ism and farming, which will result in joband food security losses.
