    +Learning Unit

    Chemical CalculationsEssential concepts and skills

n Concept of the mole as a unit of measure & conversion ofother quantities into mole (eg. No. of particles, Volume of

    gas, Mass of a substance)

n Concept of % composition and deriving empirical/molecularformula

n Concept of stoichiometry of chemical reactionsn Concept of limiting reagent, % yield & %purityn Concept of concentration (solutions chemistry)

    +Unit Design

n SIOs are packaged into 5 learning modulesn PPT slideswith voice-over created using Adobe Presenter

n Notes with examples/exercises within each set of notesn First example solved step-by-stepn Numerical answers released online periodically

nWorksheets (to be submitted for marking)

n Pop quizzes for each module to check understanding

    The learning cycle

  • 7/29/2019 AST Sharing 17092013 (Chemistry)

    10/13

    +The learning cycle

n Students were given the liberty to use class time toview the online lessons or complete their notes

    examples / worksheets.

n Students can work anywhere, anytime, in anyform of grouping.

n Online consultation available via MSN.

    SDL Components Explore alternatives

    and make sound

    decisions

    Formulate questionsand generate owninquiries.

  • 7/29/2019 AST Sharing 17092013 (Chemistry)

    11/13

    +The learning cycle

n Worksheets are handed in when the studentscomplete them and graded and returned (with

    explanations etc if required).

n Pop Quizzes at fixed intervals to check studentlearning.

n Worksheet submissions and pop quiz scorestracked on Google Docs (open to students).

    SDL Components Reflect on their

    learning and use

    feedback to improve.

    Formulate questionsand generate owninquiries.

    Articulate learninggaps.

    +Evaluating the unit

    n Survey using Google Doc.

Voice was recorded so as tominimise the gap between

online lesson and classroomlesson. Usually teachers

    would just upload the

powerpoints which serve nopurpose as students would

    just merely scan through it

and learn nothing."For Chemistry, Mr. JustinLoh recorded his voice

and incorporated it withsome powerpoint slides

    and diagrams, making a

flash application. This enabled me to see

    things more clearly."

Online lesson packages by ourchemistry teacher, allowed us to

learn at our own pace and even

had recordings of his voice in thelesson package, providing

    explanation and elaboration.

We have a special wetepaint website whichprovides a number of materials and videos to

learn both before and after our lesson. This

can enhance our understanding of this

topic as well as helps us gain a deeper

look into the related topic. Also, some morematerials and papers can be found online

and thus we can review by ourselves and

    find out our shortages.
