FAIRVIEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESIt’s people like you that make our community a great place to live. Our community’s Board, Events, and Projects are all made possible with volunteers. So, if you have time and tal-ent to lend, please contact [email protected] to get involved!

Board MembersDo you want to make a difference in your community? Serving on our volunteer Board of Directors helps you get involved. You can learn new skills, work as part of a team, give back to your community, develop leadership skills, meet your neighbours, and have fun! At our AGM in June, we will elect our Board of Directors. If you are interested in joining, we encourage you to attend an upcoming month-ly Board Meeting (first Tuesday of the month). Contact [email protected] for more information.

Planning and DevelopmentFairview has lots of exciting development on the horizon - both in our residential and formerly industrial areas. Do you have expertise to help usher in and guide this evolution? Contact president@fairviewcommunity.

Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something!

COVID-19 Update:As of March 12, we are not meeting at this time. Please phone the church to find out the current status.

Practitioners of quilting, knitting, crocheting, card making, as well as a “do-as-you-wish” table meet to learn and practice their art in a community setting. Come and receive guidance from expe-rienced makers, obtain advice, but mostly enjoy the company of women across the ages, make friends, and have a personal time out!

We normally meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00. Our spring session runs until June 24. Registration is preferred, but drop in is avail-able, babysitting supplied for a low fee. Please contact Lori at McDougall United Church, 403-252-1620.

Successful Strategies During COVID-19Major events such as a pandemic often disrupt normal routines and activities that provide a sense of purpose, control, and pleasure. Planning and doing positive and meaningful activities can help you to learn new skills and develop resilience that can make things more normal. Engaging in hobbies, helping others, re-establishing family routines, and participating in satisfying activities can also im-prove your mood and restore a sense of control.

Sometimes the emotional toll and the change can feel as if you are starting over. The day-to-day things that people count on, like talk-ing with a neighbour or going to a favourite coffee shop, have been suddenly taken from us. Today we hear how COVID-19 has sepa-rated us from each other. If you are feeling overwhelmed, set a goal for one new change and one new activity that you can start doing now and check in again a week later and most importantly keep trying. We are here to support you!

We have been running a successful program called Magic Carpet through the Can Learn Society for the last three years. This pro-gram includes parents and their preschool aged children, all from different backgrounds and cultures, who come together, share experiences, and the children have opportunities to learn new and developmentally appropriate skills. This group has been run-ning successfully every Tuesday morning at our centre, and when COVID-19 hit, they missed the support they got from each other. Our wonderful facilitator, Sandi, has reached out and 7 to 9 families are continuing to meet every week via zoom with great success.

If you know someone who needs our help during this difficult time, please let the SWCRC know.

So How Can You Help? The SWCRC has been helping people obtain basic needs for years. This includes working with low-income individuals who have a challenge putting food on their plate. Most of our families have fallen on hard times during the economic downturn, and COVID-19 has complicated things further. It is the single mom with three chil-dren at home, or the laid off janitor that worked in downtown office buildings.

If you have the means and can help by making a donation of either grocery gift cards or a charitable donation to the organization, our social workers will make sure it gets into the hands of those who need it most.

When you tell other people that you live in Fairview, how many times have heard the response “Where’s Fairview?” You probably reply with “north of Acadia”, “near Chinook Mall”, by the “Farmer’s Market”, and such. To celebrate the spirit of our small, great, and apparently little-known community, we are now selling “where’s fairview?” bumper stickers. They cost $5 and all the money goes directly to the Com-munity Association. You can purchase one online on our website fairviewcommunity.ca (via PayPal), or by emailing [email protected] and we will deliver one to you. BTW – they fit great on laptops, coffee mugs and iPads, as well.

Personal Safety While WalkingA Message from the Federation of Calgary Communities

Walking is a great way to stay active and get to know your community! While out walking, keep these safety tips in mind:

•Practice safe physical distancing by staying at least 2 metres—roughly the length of an average bicycle, tire to tire—from others you encounter on your walk. Fol-low all suggestions and restrictions put forward by the City of Calgary•Tell someone where you are going, which route you

are taking, and when you will be back.•Be aware of your surroundings. Notice everything

that goes on near you and particularly in front of you. The earlier you notice a possible problem the greater chance you have of dealing with it.•Listen to your instincts. Something that does not look

or seem right will probably cause a problem – so if you notice something like this, move yourself away from it as quickly as possible.•Walk facing the traffic.•Walk near the curb unless cars are parked in the street.

Stay away from shrubbery, darkened doorways, and al-leys where an assailant can be hiding.•Never assume parked cars are empty.•Avoid using headphones - you might not hear trouble

approaching. If you use headphones, it is recommend-ed that you keep the volume low enough to allow you to hear anyone approaching as well as any traffic com-ing in your direction.•Be wary of casual requests from strangers (someone

asking for directions, a cigarette or change - they could have ulterior motives).•Be alert. Look over your shoulder once in a while.•Never accept rides with strangers.•If you carry a purse, briefcase, or bag, keep a tight grip

on it so no one can steal it.•Enjoy your walk, but always remain aware of your sur-

roundings!
